Penny's first week home

Penny is currently 1 week and 2 days old. She has been in her home for 5 days. Upon arriving at home, her kitties sniffed her and then ignored her, her Hunter sniffed her and then ignored her, her Roxie growled and barked at her. By that afternoon, we had a dog trainer in the house and Roxie has since been disabused of the notion that Penny is growl-worthy. Currently, Roxie is the only animal that actually shows concern if Penny is crying. Go figure! The animals definitely missed Mommy - but the dogs did give her the royal sniff down to check if I cheated on them.

Sophie has had a few opportunities to hold her baby sister and seems to really delight in it. She also has "read" Penny a few stories. I think she can't wait until Penny is old enough to actually play with.

Sophie is adjusting well to the new baby in the house except she is very tired. Penny is a bit fussy and especially so at night, so Sophie suffered through it the first few days. She seemed less tired yesterday, so we hope that our various devices for keeping Penny quieter plus Sophie's room more sound-proofed are working.

Penny had her first post-hospital pediatrician appointment on Monday. Her stats were:
weight: 7 pounds 5.5 ounces (she lost some weight since birth...we've been slowly getting it back on her)
length: 20.5 inches
head circumferences: 35.5 centimeters

So, she's almost the same as the day she was born.

Fun facts about Penny:
-she smells like flowers (Sophie smelled like cookies);
-her feet are fairly ticklish (Sophie had ticklish cheeks and a neck);
-she likes to suck her fingers and fist (this is just like Sophie);
-she sleeps through most noises (Sophie was a fairly light sleeper);
-she has a super intense stare (she shares this also with Sophie).

On Monday, September 27, 2010, Mommy and Daddy went to Lowell General Hospital for a scheduled cesarean section. The section was delayed and started at 11:30am instead of 10:30am, resulting in the birth of Penelope Olivia Miranda at 12:29pm. She weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces, was 20.5 inches long and has a head circumference of 26 centimeters. After surgery, Mommy felt pretty good and Penny cried for about 4 hours straight. Since then, she has woken up to have a siaper change and to eat. Penny, as it turns out, is a fairly good eater and has been producing an excellent number of dirty diapers.

Unfortunately, the hospital is not permitting me to upload my photos onto the internet (probably due to a slow connection), so I will post a photo-only blog at a later point. Feel free to check out our new photos uploaded from our cell phones onto facebook, however.

Here's a physical description of Penny: she has a thick head of black hair. Her eyes are that lovely gray-blue color newborns tend to have. I think it means she will have brown eyes like her big sis, but we'll see what happens over the next few months. She has cupie doll lips and a cute upturned nose. By the end of day 1, she looks exactly like her big sis did at the same age. She has incredibly long fingers and toes, but her hands and feet are, of course, itsy bitsy. Unlike Sophie, who smelled like cookies to me at birth, Penny smells a bit like flowers to me. Suffice to say, I love smelling her as much as I loved to smell new born Sophie.

Upon meeting Penny (which happened on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at approximately 4:45pm), Sophie said "Oh...she's so cute!". Sophie has had a good week so far, spending lots of time with her various grand-parents, having a great school week and getting special Daddy attention. She also has enjoyed eating lots of McDonald's fries and chicky nuggets and got a special "congrats on being a big sis" cake. Apparently the cake did not taste good and Sophie was disappointed and surprised. Mommy will have to get her a new one when she gets home on Friday.

So, all is well and we are all happy (minus the cake incident). Yay!

Summer 2010

To sum up the end of Sophie's summer, she had a great time hanging out with Mommy and going to parks and museums every day. She also had fun over the weekends. Twice, she went down to NY to see Grams, Gramps, cousin Naomi and Aunt Allison and Uncle Alan. She has lots of fun going swimming and playing in the sandbox with her cousin. Sophie also got to meet all of her Pittsburgh relatives and developed a wonderful friendship with her cousin Mara.

Finally, Sophie also got to go to the MIT Robot Museum and the Worcester Ecotarium for the first time. She also went to many new parks and farms and just had a wonderful time.

Now, Sophie is prepping to become a big sister. Tomorrow, the big day comes and we will welcome new baby Penny into our home. Sophie is super excited and has been asking us for weeks when will she come home.

The 3rd-5th of July, 2010!

This year's "fourth of July" celebration was marked by several outtings to the local community. First, we went to a 3rd of July bluegrass concert in Westford center where one of Tim's friends was playing with a great group called the Boston Road. Tim and I thought it was great and Sophie kind of liked it. She went to a face painting booth and proceeded to have her entire left arm painted with hearts, doves and butterflies...in purple, but of course! We then all fled for the coolness of our house because it was near 95 degrees outside and extremely humid.

The next day, we spent almost entirely indoors due to the same weather conditions, but we did head outside for the Chelmsford Center 4th of July carnival! Sophie got to spend some time in a fire engine, watch the Chelmsford Community Band play some marches as well as some doctored Handel (I am really not sure if the music for the royal fireworks should ever be played by a concert band....maybe a symphonic band?), she got to enjoy watching people attend the carnival booths, and had a nice mini strawberry shortcake! When all was said and done, we were too hot and too tired to go to the local fireworks, so we retired home in time for the televised Boston Pops concert at the hatchshell and watched some of their fireworks too!

The next day was July 5th and this was the day of the Chelmsford 4th of July parade. We went for the first hour and a half of it, or so. We saw lots of fire trucks, police vehicles, some great floats and of course, the Chelmsford minutemen. We also saw many local and state-ide politicians marching for votes. Suffice to say, it was interesting to see who voted with supporters and who did not. Since Chelmsford's parade is the biggest one in the area, we had some big name politicians. To my shame, Sophie clapped at all of them. I guess it is good to have a polite kid, right?

We ended the 5th of July hot, tired and fairly happy. Sophie is a big fan of holidays that involve cheering and the possibility of free balloons and candy.

Vacation - June-July 2010!

This past week, we all went on vacation! We went to Ogunquit, Maine where Sophie has a blast! The first full day, it rained in the morning, so we went to the Children's Museum of Portland, Maine where Sophie was a firefighter, a veterinarian, a farmer, an astronaut, a logger, a naturalist and much, much more! She loved the museum and we may have to make a beeline back north again for another visit soon!

On the way back from the museum, Sophie got her first milk shake. She was supposed to share with Mommy, but that ended up only happening when Mommy snuck sips. Suffice to say, Sophie loves really cold chocolate flavored things (ice cream, popsicles, chocolate milk, etc...)

For the rest of the trip, the weather was lovely! We would wake up, eat breakfast, go to the beach, make sand castles, jump in the water, make mud soup, play frisbee, etc....

In the afternoons and evenings, we would have quiet time and possibly go do something that was
not beach oriented...like checking out York's Wild Animal Kingdom (see the thumbs up below!), walks on the marginal way, mini-golf and more! Check out Sophie's photo albums for all the great shots!

Sophie has a very good vacation week and I actually felt bad coming home. We already pre-booked next year's trip and can only hope that our newest addition is as much of a beach hound as Sophie is.

Penny's Pregnancy (~24 weeks)

Just a few pics of how Penny is coming along. Mommy will be 24 weeks on Monday and this picture was taken on Friday, so technically, 23.5 weeks. Everything seems to be well and normal and Sophie seems happy and excited at the prospect of "baby Penny". I think she even likes that Mommy's belly has become an angled pillow for her head. It certainly makes watching tv while on Mommy's lap easier for her.

A Gratulation

Sophie experienced a couple of firsts these last two weeks. First, she made her first fort (with help from Daddy). She was very proud of her fort and Roxie enjoyed it for a while too. She now makes a fort a few times a week

We also started going back to the big park this week, now that the weather is nice. Sometimes, after work, Mommy will take Sophie to the park to play for about an hour. Lots of the kids get ice pops afterwards at a local convenience store, so Sophie got one too. It was her first ice pop and she loved it!

Sophie also got to go with Mommy to her first high school graduation (which she called a "gratulations"). Mommy went to go watch her seniors graduate from high school. Sophie had lots of fun, although she was shy of all of Mommy's students. The fun part was provided by the little girl of one of Mommy's colleagues. Suffice to say, playdates will likely follow this summer.

Finally, Sophie got her first fully styled haircut last weekend! She had been asking for her hair to be cut short for weeks. Mommy noticed that she needed a trim, so she took Sophie into Mommy's salon. Sophie, once again, said she wanted it short, so 8 inchs and a bit of layering later, Sophie has a very trendy and new 'do. She especially liked the part at the end where she was given a lolly-pop for being so good.

This past weekend, Sophie went to Evan Aliberti's Fireman themed 5th birthday party. She really had a very good time. She got into and out of many vehicles. She also got to see a fireman in all of his gear. Finally, she got to spray the firehose all by herself! See the pics below!

Here is a picture of Mommy pregnant with baby number 2. We learned a few weeks ago it is going to be a girl. Sophie remains very excited and often asks "When can I play with the baby?" The picture was taken when Mommy was 18 weeks pregnant. More pics will come as the weeks progress. We aim for the next one at 22 weeks!

April and early May, 2010

Sophie has had a really good month. At the start of the month, Mommy, Daddy and Sophie all went to go see Curious George Live. This was a musical spectacle where George had to help save Chef Pisghetti's famous meatballs! Sophie loved every moment of it, especially the popcorn...Mommy had to buy two boxes of it!

The following weekend was Mother's Day. Mommy wanted to go to Kimball's Farm to get some fried seafood. Daddy and Sophie were more than happy to oblige and Sophie got her first Kimball's ice cream of the season! Suffice to say, she thought that was one of the best lunches ever! Mommy and Daddy also found out earlier in the weekend (Friday at 2:00 pm, to be exact), that baby number two, code name: Bugaboo, is in fact, another little girl. Sophie is very excited about this as she has been wanting a little girl baby in the house for about a year now.

Finally, this weekend, Sophie got to go to the birthday party of her friend, Giovanni. It was held at a gymnastics complex with lots of blow-up bouncy houses. She greatly enjoyed them as well as the foam square pit. Mommy had to go into and out of the various contraptions as well, which made for an interesting time since climbing out of a pit can be difficult when you are 5 months pregnant. Today, Sophie will go to the zoo. I am sure pics will follow!

Sophie had a very exciting birthday week. She got to have her very own cake at home on her birthday, and then got to share yummy cake and cupcakes with her friends and family over the weekend.

She loved having all her friends over for the party, and kept talking about having another party very very soon.

Sophie turned three years-old this past month. She started her celebration of her last month as a two year-old, as previously stated, by visiting cousin Naomi and having a great time with her and the rest of the family.

She also got to see Disney on Ice, which was wicked cool and full of princess stuff.

There is a promise of future photograph coming; however, currently, I cannot find the cord to attach the camera to the computer. With that said, Sophie has had a lovely month leading up to her third birthday.

She started off her last month with a visit down to NY to visit her cousin Naomi and to wish her a happy third birthday. They had several playdates and a wonderful time. Sophie greatly anticipated attending Naomi's birthday and was very insistent on which polka dotted outfit she was to wear to the party (it was a white shirt with small black polka dots, a bling-bling heart on a black sash, and a little tulle). Despite a few mental breakdowns at the party, likely due to being so super excited, she overall had a wonderful time and even really enjoyed playing with Naomi's other similarly-aged cousin, Emerson.

During Mommy's time off from work in February, Sophie went to see Princesses on Ice (a Disney on Ice program). She loved it so much that she has requested every weekend since to go see Mickey again. Unfortunately, this means more ice shows and live action shows for Mommy. But, the good news is that this may be our means to get her interested in actual theatre later in Sophie's little life. Sophie also went to her first real dental appointment. She cried so hysterically the entire time in the dental chair that she left with an appointment to return in 6 months "when she is a little older". Suffice to say, Mommy has spent every week since then explaining to Sophie how wonderful the dentist is so that in August, the appointment goes more smoothly. Sophie also had an appointment with a preschool. Mommy and Daddy have their fingers crossed that she will be admitted since it is lovely, near by, and has flexible hours.

Finally, Sophie's dream of the last 6 months is coming true: she is having her birthday party next weekend. She has been planning it since October. To accommodate the requirement for 5 birthday cakes and themes of Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Polka Dots, and Curious George, Sophie will have a lot of disparate balloons and decorations, a polka-dotted birthday cake, and lots of cupcakes. We fully anticipate an overly sugared and excited child by the end of next weekend. Naturally, she will be wearing a polka dot dress, for she is the "pink polka dot princess" (Sophie came up with that moniker all by herself).

My bad, it has been a long time since I have posted on behalf of Sophie. So, here's the past two months in a nut shell. First, Sophie has begun to take her own pictures. Some of these pictures have even been interesting and/or beautiful. Above, see a self portrait entitled "The fuzzier side of me".

So, as part of the last few months, we celebrated some major holidays. First, we made it safely through the Thanksgiving season without any major weight gain, but a whole lot of singing!

Then, we made it through Hannukah and Christmas time with a little bit of weight gain and not as much singing. We came back to Chelmsford for New Year's eve.

Sophie started off the new year quite properly with a very large growth spurt and her first case of strep throat in early late January. She was a very good sport about it, forcing Mommy to take her to the doctor only because has a fever for more than two days and not due to a lack of appetite or complaints of a sore throat. On the otherhand, trying to get the medication into Sophie involved many special ops.

This past weekend, we all went to the Children's Museum to enjoy the brand new Curious George exhibit. Sophie had a fantastic time until the a furry version of George showed up. We thought there was a chance she might want to meet this new and very large George, but Sophie began crying that she was scared shortly before we hit the front of the waiting line to meet George. Apparently, he was too big and did not have the right amount of fingers and toes. This was unacceptable for Sophie. Mommy has to agree as furries haunt her nightmares. Furries to Mommy are much like animals from Australia for Daddy.

Sorry for the delay in blogging folks. Sophie has had a great time since the last time. First, she went to New York and was able to experience the joy of Thanksgiving. This involved Mommy inventing a game called "Oh no!" where Sophie and her cousin, Naomi, ran around the living room waiting for Mommy to tackle them or just waiting for one person to fall and scream "Oh No!". This was lots of fun! Sophie also indicated a love of Thanksgiving because of all the cakes present.

Since then, Sophie has also celebrated Channukah. She greatly enjoyed the candles burning and even got her own mini-Menorah. Her favorite part was lighting it each night. She also did not much mind all the presents.

Mommy and Sophie have also engaged in some mild baking lately. This has resulted in Mommy coming up with creative ways to give away cookies. During the time we made Chocolate chip oatmeal raisin cookies, Sophie greatly enjoyed stirring the batter. This weekend, we made sugar cookies and she greatly enjoyed eating the frosting that we used on them and dumping colored sugar everywhere. Her hands were green by the end! Next weekend, Mommy is thinking of trying peanut butter cookies with a hershey's kiss on-top (a co-worker recommended this). I just hope this kisses make it to the cookies! Sophie sure loves chocolate!

This past Friday, Sophie finally got to see Mommy's band play! Mommy was very excited about this, until Daddy got caught in traffic and arrived one song from the end. Lucky for Mommy, Sophie was a great sport and sat very quietly in the audience, in front of Mommy, and played with toys and books very patiently. Everyone was so impressed by how good she was! Then, we went to a small party afterwards where she really liked the house of the host. Every room she entered, she said "wow!". She was even willing to eat plain pizza dough! Maybe next month, we'll manage actual pizza!

Last night Sophie went to a wonderful Channukah party where she ate lots of desserts. She told the hosts that she "had fun at the party. I liked the desserts".

So, Soph's been busy! Unfortunately, Mommy and Daddy briefly lost the camera, so there are not many pictures from this month.

Halloween 2009 and a Visit to NY

Sophie had a great time this past Halloween. She went to daycare dressed up as Abby Cadabbyon Friday, November 30th, and then on Saturday, November 31st, she got all dressed up again and went trick or treating. We went to each lit door in our neighborhood and she had Mommy or Daddy say "trick-or-treat". Sophie then took any candy handed to her and brightly would say "good-bye" to each of our neighbors.

Two weeks later, Mommy and Sophie went to NY to visit Grams and Gramps and Allison, Alan and Naomi. Sophie had a great time playing with Naomi and also checking out Mommy's old elementary school's playgrounds.

Finally, we all ended the month by going to a Bar Mitzvah. It was Sophie's first and she was very excited about it, especially the part that involved dancing to music and eating cake. She is now already planning her own birthday party in March. So far we know that she wants balloons, 3 chocolate cakes (of which one needs to have Dora on it), all her friends, and lots of presents. There was also a request for it to have princess stuff and some cake icing that was yellow. Suffice to say, with all the excited build-up to her 3rd birthday party (which is 4 months away), I hope we can live up to it!

Oops, almost forgot, Sophie got her hair cut. Well, actually, she got it trimmed. Rather than go to a kids hair place, Mommy took Sophie to her stylist. Sophie did beautifully and especially enjoyed the cookie they gave her right before the hair cut. She decided at the end that she looked like a princess.

This weekend we got to go to a great halloween party at Evan and Lauren's house. Sophie went as Abby Cadabby of course, with "piggy tails":

A couple weekends ago we went down to New York, and Sophie had a great time visiting with family. Here she is at the zoo with Gramps!

First Dance Class and more!

Sophie started taking dance classes last week (Sept. 18). Initially, she was very shy and did not want to participate. But then...

she realized she could run around, jump, skip and play parachute. Suffice to say, this week's class (Sept, 25, for those of you keeping track)though it involved a minor tantrum, went much more smoothly than last week's

Last weekend was also very busy because Sophie went to temple to celebrate Rosh Hashanah. She then went to a party where she hung out with a lot of her much older friends. She had a good time sitting on a couch, playing with toys or hanging out with her friend, Julia, her sometimes baby-sitter. This all occurred much to the shock of Mommy, Daddy and the other 20 adults at the party.

See below a picture of Sophie being cool. Lately, Sophie has really taken to wearing hair-ties as bracelets and calling herself "pretty" and "princess". She especially feels princess-y whenever she wears skirts and whenever her hair is pulled back. She very much likes it when Gretchen places her hair in "piggy tails" at daycare.

Today was Yom Kippur. Sophie and Daddy celebrated by staying home, going to the zoo and then going to temple to see the children's service. Mommy got stuck at work and then at a class after work. But, she came home in time to hear all sorts of stories about the scary monkeys (she means Mandrells and Gorillas), the nice monkeys (she means the lemurs), and the stinky camels (she means camels...they can get stinky, you know). Apparently, Sophie and Daddy both had a good and Mommy needs to teach Sophie the difference between a monkey and an ape. She supposes Curious George being called a monkey when he is clearly an ape is of no help (he is supposed to be a chimpanzee, right, right???).

Princess of the Pumpkin Patch

Sophie has certainly changed a lot this month. All of her t-shirts have begun to run too short (but tummy shirts on a 2 year-old are sort of cute, right?), she towers over me if I sit on the floor while she is standing, and now when we pull her hair away from her face, she says "I'm so prilly" (Sophie translater: I am so pretty).

We have also had some big changes in the house. Mommy went back to work at the end of August. Sophie has been loving going back to day-care full-time. Roxie was not so thrilled since she is still only 90% house broken, and so has to be locked up while Mommy is at work. We think in another week or two, we can start leaving her out.

This past weekend, we went apple picking with the Dibners. Sophie very much enjoyed being given the Princess treatment....dragged everywhere in her lovely wagon:

She also really loved all the pumpkins in the pumpkin patch, but we're waiting to buy one until we go apple picking with the Alibertis in three more weeks.

August, 2009

Despite the lack of posting, Sophie has actually had a very busy month. First, during the first weekend of August, everyone went on a DUKW tour ride. This would be a tour of Boston and a few portions of Cambridge to see the historical and touristy sites via an amphibious vehicle. We went by land and sea!

Later that same week, we went to see Daddy play with his band, the Usual Suspects, during one of Kimball Farms cruise nights. This is when people come with their collectors' cars to show them off and they always have a live band.

Sophie loved the music and Mommy loved the ice cream (did I mention Kimball's farm is a dairy farm?).

Finally, this past week we did a half vacation and staycation. It was lots of fun. We spent the first half of the week in Ogunquit, Maine, where Sophie discovered a passion for playing in the turf, but not so much the surf and Mommy discovered the has an adult on-set "sensitivity" to lobster. This pretty much means Mommy can eat lobster and not die, but her stomach will get very mad at her later. Anyway, while in Ogunquit we enjoyed eating lots of yummy seafood other than lobster (after the first day):

We had our very first (virgin) daiquiri ever! It was apparently "BE-LICIOUS" (no that is not a typo, that is how she says delicious if something is really good):

We took lots of pics of the trolley museum because it was cool and Daddy particularly liked it. Mommy liked it too, but Daddy liked it better.

For the stay-cation part, we have mostly just been hanging around and going to local things, like the New England aquarium, Grandma and Grandpa's house, and Great Brook State farm. It was especially fun for Mommy who barely cooked all week!

This week Sophie will go back to daycare almost full-time as it is time for Mommy to go back to work. We are sure Sophie will have a great time with all her buddies.

So, despite lack of posting Sophie had a very adventurous 3 weeks.

First, she learned how to water color. She now expects every afternoon to consist of water coloring time in the back yard, despite the constant either rain or extreme heat. Mommy has even tried to let Sophie paint in-doors, but Sophie believes water colors should be done outdoors and therefore much trouble occurs on the days when Mommy and Sophie are stuck inside...even if only for a few hours.

Sophie also spent a week with Grams and Gramps in NY with Mommy, Roxie and Hunter. It was an interesting drive down for Mommy, who has driven alone with Sophie before to NY, but never with a doggy, let alone two. The doggies were great as was Sophie. She had a great time in NY, especially all the time spent playing with Naomi. She almost didn't miss Daddy.

The best part was getting to spend quality time with Grams and Gramps, especially all the hugs and kisses. She didn't even mind the pig-tail pulling that Gramps likes to do.

Then, Sophie returned home to find her bathroom in disarray because Mommy and Daddy decided it was time to fix the awful plumbing and to update the bathroom. Sophie loves the new bath-tub and will eventually come to love the new sink and toilet as well. Eventually, new pics of the bathroom will be posted (once Mommy and Daddy paint it). Sophie also has had some time to play with a new play group. Sophie's been having fun going to other people's homes and playing with their toys.

Finally, Sophie and Mommy have been having some nice Mommy-Sophie time (when they both feel awake!). They have not had a lot of that since Mommy started working full-time. Today, Mommy and Sophie went to the Museum of Science. Sophie had lots of fun!

4th of July

We had a fabulous 4th of july weekend. The doggies kept it real low key for most of the weekend:

Then on Saturday, we went to the Chelmsford Independence Day parade, which was one of the most lavish community parades we've ever seen. Fire "twucks" from around the area came out to play, and there were lots of bands, motorcycles. Even the unique little fellow from the local hardware store got to ride with the Chelmsford SWAT vehicle.

But perhaps the highlight of the parade was the float that carried none other than Rick Larrimore, who is the local area's greatest Rod Stewart impersonator. Daddy snapped some cell phone pics:

On Sunday we went to the New England Aquarium, and had a great time looking at penguins and listening to seals that barked eerily like will ferrell yelling:

After the aquarium, we went out the Legal Sea Foods right on the harbor had a delicious meal that garnered approval from both mommy and daddy:
