Papua is frontier diving. One of the last truly wild places on earth, it has yet to succumb to the pressures of overfishing, coral bleaching, exploding tourism and overpopulation. The diving reflects this. Topside there are few roads, even few boats ply the water in the Raja Ampat islands on the "bird's head", the far northwestern end of Papua where Papua Diving is located. Underwater, the life is wild, extraordinarily plentiful and for the most part, unexplored.

Most dives are drift dives due to strong currents in the area. The currents provide nutrients for the outstanding quantity and variety of fish life and corals in the area. A fabulous variety of colorful soft corals and plenty of reef fish are found at most sites. Large schools of fish are known to populate some areas, pelagics such as sharks, Manta and Mobula Rays, dolphin, whales and turtles are frequent sights

The area is not only stunning underwater. Topside, the islands have a very diverse topography with steep mountain shores and deserted white sand beaches. The area is far off the beaten track and is rarely visited by foreigners. The raw beauty of the islands will fascinate you. It's dense jungle interior is known for its many orchids and the paradise birds. It's easy to see how the spaghetti worm (Loimia medusa) got its name. Also called the medusa worm, the spaghetti worm has tentacles that radiate out from its tube center to capture particles of food.

As if translucent spaceships in a night sky, hooded nudibranchs pulse in the waters of God's Pocket Marine Provincial Park in British Columbia, Canada. These sea slugs flex their bodies to swim and can reach lengths of half a foot (15 centimeters).

A flamingo tongue sea snail (Cyphoma gibbosum) feeds from the top of a sea fan in the waters off Grand Turk Island. These predatory mollusks leave a noticeable trail of dead coral tissue in their wake.

Komodo National Park in Indonesia showcases a carnival of marine life, including this green-and-black nudibranch, seen here devouring a tunicate. The coloring of these carnivorous mollusks comes from the foods they eat.

A colorful crab and sea urchins make for a psychedelic scene in Clallam Bay, Washington. Marine invertebrates, sea urchins use their spines to move along the seafloor, and crabs are known to be their natural predators.

Gapang Beach is an unique beach, with white sand halfway around the bay, surrounded by large overhanging trees; the 'Gapang' trees. So you can choose to sit on the beach in the sun, or in the shade of these grand old trees.

With a great house reef in front of the diveshop and a couple of resident turles living in the bay, it's a perfect place for snorkeling and long relaxed shore dives.

Gapang offers the widest choice in accommodation on Pulau Weh, from basic wooden huts on the beach, or nice, simple bungalows spread out along the hill overlooking the bay to comfortable bungalows with springbeds, bathrooms (mandi-style), fans or AC in a garden setting at the entrance to the beach. Prices ranges from 3,50 to 20 € (Euro) per night.

On Gapang Beach there are six restaurants to choose from. Dat's Zero Cafe, Buchari's Limbo Restaurant, Gapang Jaya restaurant, and Dang Dang Na Restaurant are open for breakfast, lunch and dinners.

There's choice from local Acehnese food, more general Indonesian dishes, tropical fruit salads and some basic Western food such as pancakes, sandwiches, french fries and Kentucky fried chicken for example. Local versions of Pizza and Lasagna are also possible, when ordered in time before to allow for the neccesary preparations. Also it's possible to order other special meals beforehand, such as BBQ Fish. (All fish on Pulau Weh is extremely fresh, so some people really fancy our tuna for making sashimi themselves.)
Achenese "family food" is served every night in mama Jungle's restaurant. The Warung Walet up the road, close to the resorts serves everyday fresh cheap and very tasty local food: rice, vegetables, fried fish, tempe, delicious fish or chicken curry's and noodles.

Beer and a few kinds of the local Indonesian brands of "firewater" are usually available on the beach.

Weh is a beautiful island located at the north western tip of Sumatra. It presents the western most part of the Indonesian archipelago - the world's largest, stretching some 4.000 km to the east.

The great attraction of this small island is its scenic beauty. Weh's rugged terrain, rocky caves, harbour views, hillside lookouts, marvellous beaches, and sleepy traditional villages all attest to these.

The island of Weh is surrounded by other smaller islands including Klah, Rubiah, Seulako, and Rondo. Together, all these islands cover an area of 154 square kilometers with the population concentrated on the main island of Weh.

Among the smaller island, Rubiah is the most well known. This small 17 Ha island was once the site of a special hospital for psychic therapy, and thereafter an important location of quarantine for Indonesian Muslims performing their pilgrimage of Hajj to Mecca. Located off the northwest tip of Bird's Head Peninsula on the island of New Guinea , Raja Ampat, or the Four Kings, a fast archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands, cays and shoals surrounding the four main islands Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo. It is a part of the newly named Papua province of Indonesia which was formerly called Irian Jaya.

Raja Ampat's pristine beauty, both above the water and below the water, is truly unrivalled. Its remote location and lack of infrastructure have inhibited the growth of tourism. This area's staggering abundance of marine life is due in part to its incredibly low human population density. Beneath the dense jungle canopy, the islands are primarily karst limestone, which are dry, inhospitable, and overwhelmingly vertical. The few resident Papuans are mainly a subsistence society, exploiting a variety of resources to meet their basic needs. Fishing is only one of these resources, and they continue to employ traditional, low-impact fishing techniques, using a hook and line from dug-out canoes.

Viper fish (Mesopelagic - found at 80-1600 meters - about a mile down) are some of the most wicked looking fish dredged up from the depths. Some of them are black as night all over with light organs (called photophores) in strategic places on their bodies, including one on a long dorsal fin that serves as a lure for the fish it preys upon. Some viperfish (and many other deep ocean fish species) don't have any pigment (color) at all - they're "see through". They also have enlarged eyes, presumably for gathering as much light as possible where there is little or no light at all. The light organs create lights by using a chemical process called bioluminescence. Other deep ocean fish, such as the the gulperDeep ocean anglerfish eel have a hinged skull, which can rotate upward to swallow large prey. They also have large stomachs which can stretch to accommodate a fish much larger than itself. The gulper eel is particularly well-known for its impossibly large mouth - big enough to get its mouth around (and swallow!) creatures much bigger than itself. Fish that live down here must adapt to a very low food supply, eating only "scraps" that sink down from above, or sometimes eating each other.

The fangtooth, aslo known as Anoplogaster cornuta, is a menacing looking creature that inhabits the deep waters of the ocean. Although it may look like a monster, it only grows to a size of about six inches in length. It has a short body and a large head. The fangtooth gets its name from the long, sharp, fang-like teeth that line its enormous, over-sized mouth. Its gruesome appearance has earned it the name, "ogrefish". The color of the adults ranges from dark brown to black. Juveniles look completely different. They are light gray in color with long spines on their heads. The fangtooth is an extreme deep-water species that lives at depths of about 16,000 feet. The pressure at these depths is intense and the water temperature is near freezing. Food here is scarce, so the fangtooth will eat just about anything it can find. Most of its meals probably fall from the upper depths of the ocean. The fangtooth is found throughout the world in temperate and tropical ocean regions including the waters off the coast of Australia.
