Review of The Essential Shih Tzu Guide

I just read my copy of "The Essential ShihTzu Guide" and wanted to give my followers a quick review.

The Essential Shih Tzu Guide is a 153 page handbook on Shih Tzu care that has everything а ShihTzu owner needs tο know in order to hаνе a healthy, happy, аnԁ well behaved Shih Tzu.

First things first, I picked up the guide in an eBook format which was extremely convenient because I was able to read it on my computer and even send a copy of it to my iPad to read on the go.

There was really a lot of good stuf.

It started with a chapter on the common traits of the ShihTzu breed and some tips on how to determine if the Shih Tzu is a good breed for your family. Then it went on to talk about how to pick the best pup from a litter - lots of stuff here I didn't know.

As far as ShihTzu health, there is a chapter on what to feed him and more importantly what NOT to feed him. My ShihTzu is a constant "licker" - licking herself nonstop and the book makes me think that this might be a food allergy. i'm definitely going to explore the food recommendations!

One of my favorite sections (and the main reason I want this on my iPad) is the section on grooming. The book insists that you can do all Shihtzu grooming at home and save tons of money that you would ordinarily give to a groomer.

In summary, there is a ton of good information here and it was well worth the $14.77 that I paid for it - heck the pictures were adorable and worth that much but I know i'll save several hundred on grooming appointments because of what I read.

I love my ShihTzus!

I just wanted to get that off my chest first of all before I continue on with an approaching dilemma. My female Shih-Tzu is very young and healthy but my male Shih-Tzu is aging and his health is failing. He is blind in one eye, has a cataract in his good eye, and is always confused and disoriented - early stages of Alzheimers.

We know that we'll replace him quickly when he's gone so that the female does not grieve but my wife is wanting a Golden Retriever instead of another Shihtzu.

Housetraining your Shih-Tzu means that you are training him to pee and poo outdoors. Your Shih-Tzu puppy wants to please you and will try his hardest to do what you request of him. Your puppy will learn fastest, however, if you use positive praise and affection.

I recommend 21 Days to a Trained Dog as your Shih-Tzu training reference - lots of good ideas on housetraining, obedience training, and even some fun trick training. When it comes to housetraining, it suggests that you put your Shih-Tzu pup on a feeding schedule after 12 weeks of age. give your Shih-Tzu pup a proper diet, and stop your pup's supply of water at around 7:30PM.

While all pups require love and attention, Shih-Tzu puppies are particularly needy.

In order to really thrive, the Shih-Tzu pup needs lots of cuddling and lots of "master time." If you have a busy schedule and aren't able to spend lots of time with your Shih-Tzu puppy, you might want to consider a different breed.

If you ever need to leave your Shih-Tzu puppy at home alone, leave the television on, leave some type of big stuffed animal to serve as a companion, and leave your pup a couple rawhide bones to chew on. Shih-Tzu puppies begin teething very early and it's either rawhide bones or your wooden furniture!

When it comes to dog toys, I recommend skipping the cheap toys in the supermarket pet aisle and buying toys from the professionals. For one thing, the size of a dog toy is a very important consideration. Dog balls, Kongs and other toys need to be small enough for your Shh-Tzu to chew and carry along, but not so small that they may become locked in your pup's throat or mouth. My favorite Shih-Tzu toys are from Kong.

Traveling With Your Shih-Tzu

Taking Your Shih-Tzu on Vacation

It is not unusual for shih-tzu owners to take their pups with when they travel. In addition to being great companions at home, most shih-tzus are their owner's "best friend" and have become great travel companions too. Shih-tzus travel well because they are typically happy, friendly, affectionate, and alert little dogs. Shih-tzu owners must remember, however, that a little bit of extra care needs to be given because the breed is super sensitive to temperatures - mainly because they are brachycephalic dogs.

Before you decide if you'll take your pet with you, you should schedule a checkup visit with your regular veterinarian to assess your shih-tzu's condition and her ability to travel. We all know that pets that are very young, very old, recovering from surgery, or pregnant are not fit for travel. Shih-tzus that are in good health however, are usually given the travel stamp of approval and are free to go!

You'll need to inform your vet where you will be traveling to, how long you'll be away, and what mode of transportation you'll be using. Also, ask your veterinarian about flea, heartworm, and tick risks and make sure those vaccinations are completely up to date.

When you travel, take a copy of your dog's medical records with you including her rabies certificate, and if you're traveling by air, be sure that the records and certificates in your possession are ten days or less before the departure.

Your shih-tzu should wear a looser fitting collar while traveling with a n identification tag that includes your mobile number. Your best bet is to buy a new tag for the road with the address and contact number of your destination.

Don't forget to bring all of your shih-tzu's regular stuff:

- Food
- Water (Drinking Water from HOME)
- Portable food and water bowls
- Leash
- Familiar things from home (toys, treats, and bedding)

Shih-Tzu Grooming

Routine home grooming of your Shih-Tzu pup should start very early so they the pup can become accustomed to the process.

You'll want to start with the coat, and the best place to attend to this is on a flat surface. Start with at least 15 minutes of brushing with a bristle brush. Then, use the same brush to gently glide through any hair that is covering your pup's eyes. If hair is still falling into their eyes after brushing, carefully use a pair of scissors with rounded ends to trim the hair surrounding the eyes. If you are uncomfortable doing this, then by all means take your pup to a professional. It's important to take this area seriously because hair in Shih Tzu eyes can cause abrasion and infections.

Next, you should focus on the pup's ears and mouth. The hair on the inside and outside of your pup's ears needs to be removed. Hair around the ear tangles easily so frequent brushing is needed. Hair around the pup's mouth should be kept short so your Shih-Tzu can eat and drink easily.

The final step of grooming is the hair around your Shih-Tzu's bottom and tail area. You should brush through the tail area with a bristle brush and then trim the area if necessary.

I strongly recommend the Shih-Tzu grooming DVD that is pictured above. This is a 90 minute DVD that will teach you how to take care of home grooming correctly. It even shows you how to do the summer "puppy cut" with a round teddy bear face and without the top knot. They show step by step instructions and explain the methods to make it easy for you to do at home.

Are you wanting to add to your Shih-Tzu family but afraid of the associated expenses? Depending on what part of the country you are looking in, your choice of color, and the pedigree of the parent Shih-Tzus, they usually they range from around $900 to as much as $2,500. It's Road Trip Time!

Puppies always love road trips and my Shih-Tzu pups are no exception!

Since we're planning a rather long road trip to Texas in March, I thought I would blog today about some things dog owners can do to make their journey with pups both fun and rewarding. True, some folks may feel that it's a less than enjoyable experience, but the majority of dog owners enjoy the companionship that their puppy can provide on long adventures. Remember that long trips in the family automobile require some doggy car conditioning however, and take heed that you should exercise certain precautions because cars can be dangerous places for dogs.

Driving a pickup truck? Always let your dog ride up in the cab. I don't care if it's on a leash or off a leash, the bed of a pickup truck is NO PLACE FOR A DOG!

Keep the windows cracked don't leave them wide open. Some people think it's cool to let a dog hang it's head out of the car window. Actually however, it's very dangerous because dogs can get hurled from the car if it's in an accident and they can also have debris fly into their eyes while moving which can cause permanent damage.

Another no-no? Dogs riding in the driver's seat on the owners lap. Give me a break!!! Not only are both the dog and the driver at risk, but so is every single pedestrian and vehicle that's around them. Trust me, you should not drive and bond simultaneously.

Now, here's the reason why my Shih-Tzus and I are heading south. We're going to the Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney concerts at the Houston Rodeo. We picked up our Houston Rodeo concert tickets and we can't wait. Do They Have Something in Common?

You can learn a lot about a person or a family by visiting their home.

Now obviously, a home with a Shih-Tzu puppy or two is a home of great character and distinction, but a home with a grandfather clock is a home with continuity, warmth and family togetherness.

Let me explain...

Traditions are important in my family and I hope to carry on many of our most special traditions with my own children some day. We have always had Shih-Tzus for example, ever since I can remember, and my mom had a Shih-Tzu when she was a growing up too. I just can't imagine life without one.

Another tradition may sound a little corny, but it is very near and dear to my heart. I want to teach my future children and grandchildren how to tell time on a grandfather clock like the one I learned on in my grandma's house in Kahalu‘u. I can remember how patient grandma was with us. "The big hand is on the what?" she used to say. She taught us lots in that house - even taught us about daylight savings time (or the absence thereof) in our home state. It's weird what you can remember.
