Ein Gerichtsurteil erregt in Israel die Gemüter: Ein Araber wurde wegen Vergewaltigung verurteilt, weil er sich vor dem einvernehmlichen Sex mit einer Israelin als Jude ausgegeben hatte.

Verteidiger Aladdin sieht den Fall anders. Die junge Frau habe bei der Anbahnung des Kontaktes zu Kaschur auch nicht von Anfang an immer die Wahrheit gesagt. Später habe sie seinen Mandanten sogar wegen Vergewaltigung im klassischen Sinn angezeigt, sagt der Anwalt. Das habe sie dann vor Gericht revidieren müssen. Am Ende stand Kaschur nicht mehr wegen Vergewaltigung, sondern Vergewaltigung mit Täuschung vor Gericht. Aladdin fügt hinzu: “Warum wird eigentlich nur der Mann verurteilt, wenn zwei Erwachsene Vorspiel und Sex haben und ein paar Lügen erzählen, damit sie zusammenkommen können?”

Das “Qualitätsmedium” SZ steht hier nur exemplarisch für abertausende von deutschen und internationalen Medien, die über den Fall mit mehr oder minder versteckter Häme berichtet haben. Von wegen: Jaja, was ist denn das für ein rassistisches Opfer (haha)! Und erst die israelische Rechtssprechung! Verurteilen einen Araber, nur weil er vor dem einvernehmlichen Sex behauptet hat, ein Jude zu sein! Das ist der israelische Apartheidstaat!

This July, Israeli and world media enthusiastically covered a peculiar verdict issued by an Israeli court, sentencing a Palestinian man to 18 months in prison for impersonating a Jewish bachelor and under that guise convincing a Jewish woman to have consensual sex with him. The accusations of racism were flung forcefully at the woman and the Israeli judiciary, despite the focus of the verdict on the marital status of the man and not his race. “All men should be jailed if lying is a crime”, commentators chirped. The media didn’t bother asking why Kashur was initially charged with non-consensual rape, and why he agreed to the plea bargain.

Last week, Haaretz daily published a long expose on the matter (my full translation below), revealing what was behind the plea agreement. The report shows, that the victim, B., was raped by her father since she was six-years-old, and was later forced into prostitution by him. At the time of the rape, B. was staying in a women’s shelter after another sexual assault by her father. According to B.’s testimony, first revealed in the Haaretz report, after Kashur claimed that he was a Jewish bachelor, he enticed her to come into a stairwell in a Jerusalem building, where he brutally raped her. B. was left bleeding, beaten up and half naked by Kashur.

In a celebrated study, economists Benjamin Jones and Benjamin Olken looked at whether the death of a country’s leader altered economic growth. It did, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse. Recently, an Oxford colleague, Anke Hoeffler, and I sifted through their results again, distinguishing this time between democrats and autocrats. We found that in democracies, changing the leader does not change growth — all leaders are disciplined to perform tolerably. But in autocracies, the growth rates are as unpredictably varied as the leaders’ personalities. Die venezuelanische Tageszeitung entschloss sich dazu nach einer richterlichen Verfügung, die für die nächsten vier Wochen das Abbilden von “gewaltätigen, blutigen [und] grotesken” Bildern sowie Informationen über Morde und Tode, welche das Wohlbefinden von Kindern und Erwachsenen gefährden könnten, verbot. An jenen Stellen, wo sich ein blutiges Bild befinden sollte, wurde lediglich das Wort “Zensiert” in roten Großbuchstaben gedruckt.

So Zirkumflex in dem sehr guten Blogbeitrag ‘Wie Chávez seine Macht zu sichern versucht’. Die New York Times hat gestern einen längeren Artikel über die rasant ansteigenden Mordraten in Venezuela veröffentlicht; seit Chávez Machtantritt 1999 hat sich die Mordrate in Venezueal mehr als verdreifacht, insgesamt sind seitdem 118.541 (!) Menschen umgebracht worden.

Venezuela hat ungefähr 26 Millionen Einwohner, damit verfügt das Land in etwa über die Einwohnerzahl des Irak, die New York Times stellt die Mordrate der beiden Länder in Relation:

In Iraq, a country with about the same population as Venezuela, there were 4,644 civilian deaths from violence in 2009, according to Iraq Body Count; in Venezuela that year, the number of murders climbed above 16,000.

… the roots of 9/11 are an intra-Muslim fight, which America, as an ally of one faction, got pulled into. There are at least three different intra-Muslim wars raging today. One is between the Sunni far right and the Sunni far-far right in Saudi Arabia. This was the war between Osama bin Laden (the far-far right) and the Saudi ruling family (the far right). It is a war between those who think women shouldn’t drive and those who think they shouldn’t even leave the house. Bin Laden attacked us because we prop up his Saudi rivals — which we do to get their oil.

In Iraq, you have the pure Sunni- versus-Shiite struggle. And in Pakistan, you have the fundamentalist Sunnis versus everyone else: Shiites, Ahmadis and Sufis. You will notice that in each of these civil wars, barely a week goes by without one Muslim faction blowing up another faction’s mosque or gathering of innocents — like Tuesday’s bombing in Baghdad, at the opening of Ramadan, which killed 61 people.

It’s not every day that House Foreign Affairs Chairman Howard Berman (D-CA) and Ed Royce (R-CA), the ranking member of terrorism subcommittee of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, agree on anything. But, when it comes to the terrorist connections of one particular Turkish charity, there’s no daylight between them. These legislators recently sent a letter to Stuart Levey, the under secretary for terror finance at the Treasury Department, stating that evidence “strongly supports” designating the Turkish charity IHH (Insan Haklari Ve Hurriyetleri Vakfi) under Executive Order 13224 for its support of terrorist groups, and urging Levey to take action.

In einem offenen Brief (siehe auch hier) haben die drei „Free Gaza“-Passagiere der Linkspartei, Annette Groth (MdB), Inge Höger (MdB) und Norman Paech (ex-MdB) am 14.07.10 folgendes “behauptet”:

Du [Petra Pau] verdächtigst dabei „mindestens“ eine türkische Organisation als „pro-faschistisch“, obwohl du dich nur auf ein Gerücht und keinen präzisen Nachweis stützen kannst. Solltest du die IHH meinen, so sind die landläufigen Anwürfe auch gegen sie vollkommen unbewiesen und stammen nur aus dubiosen Quellen. [...] Er steht auf keiner der berüchtigten Terrorlisten und es dürfte sich inzwischen herumgesprochen haben, dass die von Innenminister de Maizière verbotene IHH in Deutschland nichts mit der IHH in der Türkei, mit der wir kooperiert haben, zu tun hat. Wir finden es äußerst problematisch, wenn in dieser sensiblen Diskussion gegenüber islamischen Institutionen immer wieder auf Verdächtigungen, Gerüchte und Klischees zurückgegriffen wird – für DIE LINKE sollte sich so etwas eigentlich verbieten.

Selbstverständlich war bereits zu dem Zeitpunkt bekannt, dass die deutsche Sektion der IHH Verbindungen zur türkischen IHH hat, aber das schert Politiker der Linkspartei scheinbar nicht. Aber in den USA wird nun die türkische IHH, also die IHH, auf deren Boot sich die drei Linksparteipolitiker befanden, aufgrund von soliden Beweisen auf die Terrorliste gesetzt. Es handelt sich demnach nicht um dubiose Quellen, bzw. Verdächtigungen, Gerüchte und Klischees.

Eigentlich – also wenn wir es nicht mit der Linkspartei zu tun hätten – wäre jetzt mindestens eine Entschuldigung, wenn nicht ein Rücktritt vom Bundestagsmandat fällig. Abgeordnete des Deutschen Bundestages haben schlichtweg nichts auf einem Boot verloren, dass von einer amtlich anerkannten Terrororganisation gechartert wurde. Aber, es handelt sich nur um LINKE-Politiker, da fällt die notwendige Skandalisierung vermutlich aus.

Ray Takeyh, senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, writes in the Washington Post that this common narrative suffers from numerous deficiencies:

[Today] marks the anniversary of one of the most mythologized events in history, the 1953 coup in Iran that ousted Prime Minister Muhammad Mossadeq. CIA complicity in that event has long provoked apologies from American politicians and denunciations from the theocratic regime. The problem with the prevailing narrative? The CIA’s role in Mossadeq’s demise was largely inconsequential. The institution most responsible for aborting Iran’s democratic interlude was the clerical estate, and the Islamic Republic should not be able to whitewash the clerics’ culpability.
