A visit to the SEPAQ Aquarium in Quebec City is one of our favourite things to do ...

we love the tank full of rays, the jellyfish tanks, the two leopard sharks and the GIANT octopus!

Open year round there is always something interesting happening at the SEPAQ Acquarium with it's light festival over the Christmas/New Year period, bouncy castles at spring break, and sand castle sculptures, a large playground area and water pad during the summer months. There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy your own picnic food, as well as indoor and outdoor dining areas, ice-cream and other treats (during summer).

Watch out for the GIANT octopus .... 20 feet long! (in it's own tank, on the third floor)

For the last three years I have bought an annual pass which pays for itself in the first couple of visits! There are specials on the first Wednesday of each month for Les Mercredis-Supermamans (except during mid-summer) and sometimes there is a discount on the family pass around Father's Day weekend!

PARENT-CHILD activity for 3-7 years at Saint-Félix-de-Cap-Rouge (siblings are welcome)

From September 2013, the Sainte-Félix Parish will be pleased to offer a new course for the younger ones. The family is the place par excellence to convey the basics of the faith to children. Since most of the child-care and schools removed any religious teaching since 2008, parents who wish to actively participate in the awakening to the faith of their toddlers are now turning to the community to find the tools to do this, and this is the mission of La P'tite Pasto.

At La P'tite Pasto, we want above all have fun! Songs, drawings, crafts, stories, games and puppets can explore various topics in the life of toddlers: Hello! What is your name? - Thanks for everything! - My family, I love it! - I am a beautiful treasure box! - Cheers guys! - It's Christmas!

The child discovers the wonders of family, nature, friendship and is gently introduced to the presence of God and the great Christian values, all in a language appropriate to their age and in an atmosphere of fun! They must be accompanied by an adult mean (parent, grandparent, or other).

Travellin' Toddler Time first session starts October, 18th!

The Quebec City Reading Council are facilitating Travellin' Toddler Time together with their partners; Jeffrey Hale Community Services, the Morrin Centre and the Valcartier Family Centre.

What is Travellin' Toddler Time?

A free activity for parents, grandparents and children ages 3-4. Sing songs, hear stories, enjoy a snack and make a craft.

WHEN: 9:30-11:00 AM; the second Friday of each month from October to June, excluding January.

WHERE: This activity rotates between St. Brigid's Home, Quebec City Reading Council, Morrin Centre and Valcartier Family Centre.

Registration for this activity is essential as space is limited to 12 children.

Contact Quebec City Reading Council at 418-681-1258 or info@qcrc.org to register. Registration requests are only accepted during the month preceding each session. While younger siblings are always welcome, the activity is specifically for children ages 3-4.

Friday October 18th at St. Brigid's, the theme is COLOURS.

Friday November 8th at The Morrin Centre, the theme is MITTENS.
Friday December 13th at St. Brigid's, the theme is CHRISTMAS.

Spicy Apple Cake Recipe

Tender and moreish, this cake keeps and travels well.

Great as a coffee morning cake, or with whipped cream for dessert.

Invariably comes out a little different each time, depending on the type of apples used.

Spicy Apple Cake (with a crunchy topping)
125g butter (1/2 cup)
1 cup cooked apple (or canned, if you wish)
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1 cup of flour, plus 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp each of nutmeg, allspice
pinch salt
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup raisins or sultanas

1. Preheat oven to 150 degrees celsius.
2. Cream the butter and sugar, add apple and egg (using ingredients at room temperature).
Or, melt the butter, cool a little before adding the sugar and egg (then leave for 5 minutes).
3. Sift dry ingredients and add to the apple/butter mixture. Stir until just blended. Add sultanas.
4. Spread into greased or lined baking pan.
5. Add the crunchy topping (below).

Topping

Melt 1 Tablespoon butter, stir in 2-3 tablespoons of brown sugar and add up to 1/2 cup of large oat flakes.

Bake 35-40 minutes (until a skewer comes out clean). Let it cool before cutting.

Try this cute LadyBug craft for preschoolers

As a parent, it is easy for us to want to step in and DO the craft for our child. So, I encourage you to show your child what to do, and then allow them to use child-safe scissors, paint and a non-toxic glue stick on their own!

These are important skills all good preschools, kindergartens and learning centres encourage children to do to help develop their cognitive skills.

You'll need:-

2 white paper plates
Red paint, Black paint
Scissors and a glue stick
Coloured construction paper for the head, spots and eyes; or use stick on eyes
3x black pipe cleaners (for legs)
Stapler

Help your preschooler paint one paper plate red and the other black (allow time to dry)
Cut the red paper plate in half
Trace circles onto lightweight coloured paper and have your preschooler cut out the circles and glue onto the wings
Punch three holes on either side of the black paper plate
Thread black pipe cleaners through the back of the black paper plate (to form legs)
Staple the red wings onto the black body (slightly overlapping at the top)
Cut a crescent shape for head, from coloured card, paper or foam
Glue the head shaped crescent onto the tip of the wings
Glue eyes onto the head
