ਸਮਕਾਲੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ ਰਚਨਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਇਰ ਬਰਜਿੰਦਰ ਚੌਹਾਨ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਬੇਹੱਦ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕਾਵਿ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਚਲੀ ਤਰਲਤਾ, ਭਾਵ ਦੀ ਬੁਲੰਦੀ, ਚਿੰਤਨ ਦੀ ਗਹਿਰਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਬਹਿਰ ਦੀ ਪਕਿਆਈ ਰਲ ਕੇ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਮਾਹੌਲ ਸਿਰਜਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਪਾਠਕ ਦੀ ਸੰਵੇਦਨਾ ਤਰੰਗਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੀ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਹਿਜ ਸੁਭਾਵਕ ਮੌਲਿਕ ਪੇਸ਼ਕਾਰੀ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਵਿਲੱਖਣਤਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਿਅਰ ਚਮਤਕਾਰੀ ਸਨਸਨੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਫੈਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਸਗੋਂ ਮਾਨਵੀ ਹਾਵਾਂ ਭਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਤਰਜਮਾਨੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਚੇਤਨਾ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕੁਰੇਦਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਸ ਦਾ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ‘ਪੌਣਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਦਸਤਖ਼ਤ’ ਉਸਦੀ ਬੁਲੰਦ ਸ਼ਾਇਰੀ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ ਮਿਸਾਲ ਹੈ। ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ ਨਾਲ ਜਨੂੰਨ ਦੀ ਹੱਦ ਤਕ ਲਗਾਅ ਹੋਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੀ ਬਰਜਿੰਦਰ ਚੌਹਾਨ ਨੇ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ ਉੱਤੇ ਪੀ ਐੱਚ.ਡੀ.ਕੀਤੀ। ਅੱਜਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇਗ਼ ਬਹਾਦਰ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ ਕਾਲਜ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ।

ਜ਼ਮਾਨੇ ਦਾ ਚਲਨ, ਹਰ ਸ਼ਖ਼ਸ ਦੇ ਤੇਵਰ ਬਦਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ।
ਬਦਲਦੇ ਨੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੌਸਮ ਤਾਂ ਸਭ ਮੰਜ਼ਰ ਬਦਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ।

ਬਦਲਦੀ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਸੂਰਤ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਇੱਕ ਨਾਲ ਉਮਰਾਂ ਦੇ,
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਅਰਥ ਵੀ ਅਕਸਰ ਬਦਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ।

ਕਹਾਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਤਾਂ ਕਦੇ ਬਦਲੀ ਨਾ ਸਦੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ,
ਸਮੇਂ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਨਾਟਕ ਦੇ ਬਸ ਪਾਤਰ ਬਦਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ।

ਜਦੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਦੈ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਤੀਕਰ ਹਾਦਸਾ ਕੋਈ,
ਉਦੋਂ ਤੱਕ ਇਸ ਇਬਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਕਈ ਅੱਖਰ ਬਦਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ।

ਤੇਰੇ ਤੁਰ ਜਾਣ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹਾਸੇ ਅਚਾਨਕ ਹਉਕਿਆਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਬਦਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ।

ਇਹੀ ਦਸਤੂਰ ਹੈ ਏਥੇ, ਹਵਾ ਦਾ ਰੁਖ਼ ਬਦਲਦੇ ਹੀ,
ਕਈ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣ ਬਦਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ, ਕਈ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਬਦਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ।

ਘਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋੋਂ ਸੰਨਾਟਾ ਬੇਹਾਲ ਕਰੇ।
ਘਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਸਵਾਲ ਕਰੇ।

ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਬੋ ਵਾਂਗ ਜੁਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਤੇ ਫੇਰ ਕਦੇ ਨਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਉਹ,
ਪਰ ਮੇਰਾ ਦਿਲ ਝੱਲਾ ਹੁਣ ਵੀ ਬਹਿਸ ਹਵਾਵਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਰੇ।

ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਬਿਖਰਨ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਔਖਾ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇ ਸਾਹ ਲੈਣਾ ਵੀ,
ਰੇਤ ਜਿਹੇ ਉਸ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ ਦੀ ਵੀ ਕੀ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰੇ।

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਘਰ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੀ ਅਕਸਰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕੁਝ ਏਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ,
ਜਿਉਂ ਮੇਲੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁੰਮਿਆ ਬੱਚਾ ਆਪਣਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਕਰੇ।

ਵਿਹਲ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਦ ਹੈ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਤੋਂ,
ਤੇਰੇ ਵਗਦੇ ਅੱਥਰੂਆਂ ਦਾ ਏਥੇ ਕੌਣ ਖ਼ਿਆਲ ਕਰੇ।

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਹੁਣ ਯਾਦਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਕਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦੇ,
ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਸ਼ਿਅਰਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਜਿਸ ਚਿਹਰੇ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਕਰੇ।

ਕੀਤਾ ਨਿਲਾਮ ਹਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਜ਼ਮੀਰ ਨੂੰ।
ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਸ ਆ ਗਿਆ ਉਹ ਵੀ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਨੂੰ।

ਮੰਗੇ ਦੁਆ ਜੋ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੈਰ ਦੇ ਲਈ,
ਇਹ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਢੂੰਡਦਾ ਹੈ ਇੱਕ ਐਸੇ ਫ਼ਕੀਰ ਨੂੰ।

ਮੈਂ ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰਾ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਵੀ ਨੋਕ ’ਤੇ,
ਸੀਨੇ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੁਕੋ ਲਿਆ ਓਸੇ ਹੀ ਤੀਰ ਨੂੰ।

ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਖੋਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਸਦਾ,
ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਸਾਂਭਦੈ ਅੱਖਾਂ ’ਚ ਨੀਰ ਨੂੰ।

ਸੌਖੇ ਬੜੇ ਨੇ ਮੇਟਣੇ ਰਾਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਫ਼ਾਸਲੇ,
ਔਖਾ ਬੜਾ ਹੈ ਦਿਲ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਟਾਉਣਾ ਲਕੀਰ ਨੂੰ।

ਤੂੰ ਦਰਦ ਸਾਰਾ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੌਂਪ ਦੇ,
ਵਾਰਿਸ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਇਸ ਜਗੀਰ ਨੂੰ।

ਉਮਰ ਭਰ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਤੀਕ ਨਾ ਆਇਆ ਗਿਆ।
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੱਗਦੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸਾਰਾ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਜ਼ਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ।

ਰੂੁਹ ਮੇਰੀ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮ ਆਏ ਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ,
ਮੇਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਵੀ ਦਰਦ ਦਾ ਪਰਚਮ ਨਾ ਲਹਿਰਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ।

ਹਰ ਕਦਮ ’ਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਜੋ ਸਾਰਾ ਦਿਨ,
ਸ਼ਾਮ ਉਤਰੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਹੁਣ ਕਿੱਧਰ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ।

ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਿਆਸ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਆਦਮੀ ਦੀ ਯਾ-ਖ਼ੁਦਾ,
ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਪੀ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਰਹਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ।

ਸਮਝਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਸੀ ਹਕੀਕਤ ਪੀਂਘ ਸਤੰਰਗੀ ਦੀ ਮੈਂ,
ਫੇਰ ਵੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਅਪਣਾ ਦਿਲ ਨਾ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ।

ਖ਼ੌਫ਼, ਲਾਚਾਰੀ, ਉਦਾਸੀ, ਨਾ-ਉਮੀਦੀ, ਬੇਵਸੀ,
ਰੋਜ਼ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਕੋਈ ਆਇਆ ਗਿਆ।

ਦਰਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਅਜਬ ਖ਼ੁਮਾਰੀ ਹੈ।
ਇਹ ਨਸ਼ਾ ਹਰ ਨਸ਼ੇ ’ਤੇ ਭਾਰੀ ਹੈ।

ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਤਾਂ ਬੇਜ਼ੁਬਾਨ ਹੈ ਸਾਰਾ,
ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਕਿਸ ਨੇ ਮਾਰੀ ਹੈ।

ਫੇਰ ਜਾਗੀ ਹੈ ਦਿਲ ’ਚ ਰੀਝ ਨਵੀਂ,
ਫਿਰ ਨਵੇਂ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮ ਦੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਹੈ।

ਸਭ ਨਫ਼ਾ ਸੋਚਦੇ ਵਫ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ,
ਇਸ਼ਕ ਵੀ ਹੁਣ ਦੁਕਾਨਦਾਰੀ ਹੈ।

ਚੋਗ ਦਿਸਦੀ ਹੈ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਜਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ,
ਭੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਵੀ ਖੇਡ ਨਿਆਰੀ ਹੈ।

ਏਸ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ’ਚ ਆਏ ਹਾਂ ਜਦ ਤੋਂ।
ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਨਾਲ ਬਹਿਸ ਜਾਰੀ ਹੈ।

ਸਾਰਾ ਦਿਨ ਮੀਂਹ ਵਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ । ਸਾਰੀ ਰਾਤ ਵੀ । ਜਰਨੈਲੀ ਸੜਕ ‘ਤੇ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਬਜਰੀ ਦੀ ਮੋਟੀ ਤਹਿ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਲੇਬਰ ਦੇ ਤੰਬੂ , ਖੇਤਾਂ-ਖਤਾਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਰੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਡੁਬਣੋ ਡਰਦੇ , ਬਣਦੀ ਪੱਕੀ ਵਲ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਕ ਆਏ – ਅਗਲਾ ਦਿਨ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਿਆਂ ਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਠੇਕੇਦਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੰਦੀਆਂ ਜਾਲ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਬੜੇ ਤੰਬੂ ਤਾਂ ਖਤਾਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਢਲਾਨਾਂ ਵਲ ਤਿਲਕ ਗਏ ,ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਠੁਰ ਠੁਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਭਿੱਜੇ ਚੁਲ੍ਹੇ ‘ਦਿਹਾੜੀਦਾਰਾਂ ’ ਲਈ ਬੁਰਕੀ ਰੋਟੀ ਵੀ ਨਾ ਪਕਾ ਸਕੇ ।

ਦੂਰ ਹਟਵੇਂ ਛੱਪੜ ‘ਚ ਪਾਣੀ ਢੋਂਦੀ ਟੈਂਕੀ ਦੀ ਲੇਬਰ ਬਚਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਠੇਕੇਦਾਰ ਨੇ ਵਰ੍ਹਦੀ ਮੀਂਹ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਲੂ ਚਲਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੇ ਕੇ , ਭੁੱਖੇ-ਭਾਣੇ ਮਰਦਾਂ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਟੋਕਰੀਆਂ ਹੇਠ ਜੋੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ । ਰਾਧੀ ਦੀ ਪੰਜ ਕੁ ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਪਿੰਨੋ ਨੇ ਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਟੀ ਸਾੜੀ ‘ਚੋਂ ਟੋਟੋ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਨਿੱਕੇ ਤੇਜੂ ਨੂੰ ਲਪੇਟ ਲਿਆ , ਅਤੇ ‘ ਸੜਕ ਬੰਦ ਹੈ ‘ ਲਿਖੇ ਦੋ ਡਰਮਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਟਿਕਾਏ ਫੱਟੇ ਹੇਠ ਖਲੋ ਕੇ ਆਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਮੋਟਰਾਂ ਗੱਡੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ ਕੇ ਲੰਘਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਮੈਲੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਲਾਲ ਝੰਡੀ ਫੜ ਲਈ । ਦੁਪਹਿਰ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਇਸ ਸੜਕੇ ਅੰਤਰ-ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਕਾਰ ਰੈਲੀ ਲੰਘਣ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਖ਼ਰਾਬ ਟੋਟੋ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਆਰਨ ਦੇ ਉਪਰੋਂ ਚੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਠੇਕੇਦਾਰ ਨੇ ਰਾਧੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਧ ਚੁੰਘਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਵਿਲਕਦੇ ਬਾਲ ਕੋਲ ਜਾਣੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਚਿਰ ਰੋਕੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਿੰਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਮਹਿਕਮੇ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਅਫ਼ਸਰ ਦੀ ਜੀਪ ਨੱਪੀ ਰੋੜੀ ਉਪਰੋਂ ਲੰਘ ਕੇ ’ ਓ.ਕੇ. ‘ ਨਾਂ ਆਖ ਗਈ ।

ਠੰਡ ਨਾਲ ਠਰੇ ਸੁੰਨ ਹੋਏ ਬਾਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਿੱਜੇ ਤੰਬੂ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੁਲਘਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਦਾ ਧੂਆਂ ਸਿਕਾਉਂਦੀ ਰਾਧੀ ਨੂੰ ਨੇਰ੍ਹੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਲੰਘਦੀਆਂ ਸੁਦੇਸ਼ੀ-ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ੀ ਕਾਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਉਭਰ ਕੇ ਗੋਲੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਤੰਬੂ ਵਿਚ ਵਜਦੇ ਚਿੱਕੜ ਦੇ ਛਿਟਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਓਨਾ ਫਿਕਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਜਿਨਾ ਤਿੰਨ ਕੁ ਮੀਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿੱਥ ‘ਤੇ ਵੱਸੇ ਕਰਬੇ ਤੋਂ ਠੇਕੇਦਾਰ ਦੇ ਘਰੋਂ ‘ਤਨਖਾਹ ‘ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਟਾ-ਦਾਲ ਲੈਣ ਗਏ ਭਈਆਂ ਦਾ ,ਜਿਹੜੇ ਉਦ੍ਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਸਮੇਤ ਏਨੀ ਰਾਤ ਗਿਆਂ ਵੀ ਹਾਲੀ ਸ਼ਹਿਰੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ ਪਰਤੇ ।

Main jab chaloon to ye daulat bhi saath rakh dena,
Mere buzurg mere sar pe haath rakh dena.....

Dhalega din to sulagne lagega dil mera,
Mujhe bhi ghar ke chiragon ke saath rakh dena.....

Ye aane wale zamano ke kaam aayenge,
Kahin chhupa ke mere tajurbat rakh dena.....

Kisi bahane khuda yaad aaye logon ko,
Gali ke mod pe kuchh wardaat rakh dena....

Khilegi dhoop to jugnu bhi muskurayenge,
Kisi bhi dhoop ki tehni pe raat rakh dena.......

ਪਰਮਜੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਨਿੱਝਰ ਜੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ ' ਯਾਦਾਂ ਜੁ ਆਈਆਂ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ

" ਇਹ ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਅੱਜ ਯਾਦ ਹੈ ਆਈ,
ਚੰਨ ਦਾ ਲੌਂਗ ਬੁਰਜੀਆਂ ਵਾਲਾ,
ਪਾ ਕੇ ਨੱਕ ਵਿਚ ਰਾਤ ਹੈ ਆਈ,
ਇਹ ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਅੱਜ ਯਾਦ ਹੈ ਆਈ |"

ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਗੀਤ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਅੰਮੜੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਹੜੇ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਗਾਇਆ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਦਾ ਖੱਬਾ ਹੱਥ ਸੀਨੇ ਤੇ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਸੱਜਾ ਹੱਥ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਸੀ | ਇਕ ਬਰੀਕ ਜਿਹੀ ਹੰਝੂਆਂ ਦੀ ਲੀਕ ਉਹਦੀਆਂ ਪਲਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੈਦ ਚੋਂ ਨਿਕਲ ਕੇ ਉਹਦੀ ਨੱਕ ਦੀ ਕੂਮਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਲੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਉਹਦੇ ਹੋਠਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾ ਗਈ | ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਦਿਲ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਸੀਜਿਆ ਜੋ ਉਸਦੇ ਸਾਹਵੇਂ ਬੈਠ ਨਾ ਸਕੀ | ਅੱਜ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਨਾ ਇਸ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਹੰਝੂਆਂ ਭਿੱਜੀ ਯਾਦ ਨੂੰ ਸੀਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਂਭ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਉਹ ਮਸਤ-ਮਲੰਗ , ਅਲਬੇਲਾ ਸ਼ਾਇਰ ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਲਗਭਗ ਸਾਢੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਦਹਾਕੇ ਬੀਤ ਜਾਣ ਤੇ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁੱਲ ਸਕੀ |

ਜੀ ਹਾਂ ! ਮੈਂ ਗੱਲ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹਾਂ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਬਟਾਲਵੀ ਦੀ , ਜਿਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੀ ਤਿੱਖੜ ਦੁਪਹਿਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਜੂਨ 1959 ਦੀ ਤਪਦੀ ਰੁੱਤੇ ' ਮੋਗੇ ' ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਰ ਪਾਇਆ | ਉਸ ਦਿਨ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਮਈ ਸ਼ਾਮ ਡੀ.ਐਮ. ਕਾਲਜ ਮੋਗੇ ਦੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਸ਼ਾਮ ਸੀ , ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਇਕ ਭਰਵੇਂ ਇਕੱਠ ਵਿਚ ' ਮਿਰਚਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੱਤਰ ' ਦੀ ਪੇਸ਼ਕਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ | ਉਸਦੇ ਤਰੰਨਮ ਤੇ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਦੀ ਸੋਜ਼ ਨੇ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੜਕਣ ਤੇਜ਼ ਕਰ ਦਿਤੀ | ਅੱਲੜ ਕੰਵਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸੀਨਿਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹਉਕੇ ਉੱਠਣ ਲੱਗੇ | ਬਿਰਹੁੰ ਕੁੱਠੇ ਨੈਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੋਏ ਸਿੱਲੇ ਹੋਣ ਲੱਗੇ |ਸਟੇਜ ਤੇ ਬੈਠੇ ਸਿਰਮੌਰ ਕਵੀ ਵਿਧਾਤਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਤੀਰ , ਕਰਤਾਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਲੱਗਣ , ਨੰਦ ਲਾਲ ਨੂਰਪੁਰੀ ਉਸਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵੱਲ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਵਿਚ ਉੱਠਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਲਹਿਰ ਤੋਂ ਹੈਰਾਨ-ਪਰੇਸ਼ਾਨ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ | ਉਸ ਦਿਨ ਸਟੇਜ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਕਵੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਰੋਤੇ ਸੁਣਨ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ | ਵਾਰ ਵਾਰ ' ਸ਼ਿਵ ' ਦੀ ਫਰਮਾਇਸ਼ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ | ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਖੁਸ਼ ਬਰਕਤ ਰਾਮ ' ਯੁਮਨ ' ਸੀ ਜੋ ਉਸਦਾ ਉਸਤਾਦ ਸੀ | ਉਹ ਸ਼ਾਮ ' ਸ਼ਿਵ ' ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਮ ਹੋ ਨਿੱਬੜੀ |

ਤੇ ਫੇਰ ' ਮੋਗਾ ' ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਝੱਲੀਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਮੋਹ ਤੇ ਅਪਣੱਤ ਭਰੀ ਚਿੱਠੀ ਲਿਖੀ:
" ਵੀਰੇ ,
ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਝੱਲੀਆਂ ਭੈਣਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਬੈਠਣ ਲਈ ਤਰਸਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ |

ਉਡੀਕਵਾਨ,
ਸਤਿੰਦਰ ਤੇ ਹਰਜੀਤ | "

ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਝੱਲੀਆਂ ਭੈਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਓਦੂੰ ਵੀ ਵੱਧ ਝੱਲਾ ਵੀਰਾ , ਮੁੜਦੀ ਡਾਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆ ਗਿਆ | ਮੈਂ ਮੋਗੇ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਫੇਰੂ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਰਵਿਸ ਕਰਦੀ ਸੀ | ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਸੁਨੇਹਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ | ਉਹ ਵੀ ਜੂਨ 1959 ਦੀ ਇਕ ਭਖਦੀ ਦੁਪਹਿਰ ਸੀ | ਸਤਿੰਦਰ ਮੇਰੀ ਛੋਟੀ ਭੈਣ ਤੇ ਹਰਜੀਤ ਉਸਦੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ | ਉਹ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਬਸ ਸਟੈਂਡ ਤੋਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਲੈ ਆਈਆਂ | ਉਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਸਦਾ ਦੋਸਤ ਸੀ | ਦੋਵੇਂ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਲੰਮ-ਸਲੰਮੇ | ਦੋਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਚਿੱਟੇ ਲੰਬੇ ਬੰਗਾਲੀ ਕੁੜਤੇ ਤੇ ਖੁੱਲੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਚਿੱਟੇ ਪਜਾਮੇ | ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਘਰ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਬੜੇ ਹੀ ਨਿੱਘ ਨਾਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਕੀਤਾ | ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਵੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਸਾਡਾ ਘਰ ਕਾਲਜ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਟਹਿਕਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ | ਕਮਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਛੀ ਤਰਪਾਲ ਤੇ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਬੈਠਾ, ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਖੁਸ਼ ਸੀ | ਵੀਰੇ ਵੀਰੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਵਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਮਰਾ ਗੂੰਜ ਉਠਿਆ | ਵੱਖੋ-ਵਖਰੀਆਂ ਫਰਮਾਇਸ਼ਾਂ ਹੋਣ ਲੱਗੀਆਂ | ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਨੇ ਘੁਰਕੀ ਲਾਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ, " ਮਰ ਜਾਣੀਓਂ , ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਚਾਹ-ਪਾਣੀ ਤਾਂ ਪੀ ਲੈਣ ਦਿਓ " | ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਰਸੋਈ ਵਲ ਨੂੰ ਭੱਜ ਤੁਰੀਆਂ | ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਗਿਲਾਸ , ਕਿਸੇ ਹੱਥ ਚਾਹ ਦੀ ਕੇਤਲੀ ,ਕਿਸੇ ਹੱਥ ਬਿਸਕੁਟਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਪਲੇਟ | ਫੇਰ ਸ਼ੋਰ-ਸ਼ਰਾਬਾ , " ਵੀਰੇ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਹੱਥੋਂ , ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲੋਂ " | ਉਹ ਇਸ ਸ਼ੋਰ-ਸ਼ਰਾਬੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਭੁੱਲਿਆ ਬੈਠਾ ਸੀ | ਬਹੁਤ ਖੁਸ਼ | ਅੰਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਖੁਸ਼ | ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਸੋਚ ਰਹੀ ਸਾਂ ਕਿ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਤਾਂ ਕਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਗ਼ਮ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ | ਆਪ ਵੀ ਰੋਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਰਵਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ | ਮੈਂ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਗ਼ਮ ਤਾਂ ਉਹਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ-ਤੇੜੇ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ | ਉਹ ਇਕ ਨਖਰੇਲੋ ਨਾਰ ਵਾਂਗ ਹਰ ਇਕ ਨੂੰ ਲੁਭਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ | ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿਉਂ ? ਮੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਲੱਗ ਰਿਹਾ | ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਮਹਿਫ਼ਲ ਚੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੀ ਰਹੀ | ਤਿੰਨ-ਚਾਰ ਘੰਟੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਕਰ ਲਈ | ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਆਟੋਗਰਾਫ਼ ਲੈਣੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੇ | ਜਾਣ ਵੇਲੇ ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆ ਕੇ ਖੜ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗਾ , " ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਆਟੋਗਰਾਫ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ? " ਮੈਂ ਮੁਸਕੁਰਾ ਪਈ ਤੇ ਅਪਣੀ ਛੋਟੀ ਭੈਣ ਦੀ ਆਟੋਗਰਾਫ਼ ਬੁੱਕ ਉਸਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਕਰ ਦਿਤੀ | ਉਸਨੇ ਲਿਖਿਆ , " ਤੂੰ ਚੁੱਪ ਦਾ ਸਾਗਰ ਏਂ | ਪਰ ਡਾਹਢਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਏ ਤੇਰੀ ਚੁੱਪ ਵਿਚ | ਸ਼ਿਵ | " ਆਟੋ ਬੁੱਕ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੋੜਦਾ ਕਾਤਲਾਨਾ ਅਦਾ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਸਕਰਾ ਪਿਆ |

ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਮੋਗੇ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਸੁਨਹਿਰੀ ਪੰਨਾ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਮੋਹ ਤੇ ਅਪਣੱਤ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ , ਜੋ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੇ ਪਿਆਰ , ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਅਪਣੱਤ ਦਾ ਪਰਤੀਕ ਸੀ | ਮੋਗਾ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਉਸ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਸਕਦਾ | ਹਰ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਵਿਚ ਉਸਦੀ ਹਾਜ਼ਰੀ ਜਰੂਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ | ਬੇਸ਼ੁਮਾਰ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕਠ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਚੁੱਕ ਲੈਂਦਾ | ਹਰ ਵਾਰ ਉਹ ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਰੋਟੀਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਚੰਦ ਬੁਰਕੀਆਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਪਵਾ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਰੱਜਵਾਂ ਪਿਆਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ | ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸੂਹ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਮਿੰਟਾਂ-ਸਕਿੰਟਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦੁਆਲੇ ਇਕੱਠੀਆਂ ਹੋ ਕੇ " ਚੀਂ....ਚੀਂ... ਕਰਦੀਆਂ | " ਇਕ ਵਾਰ ਉਸਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ , " ਪਰਮ , ਇਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੁਆਲਿਓਂ ਕਦੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੋਣਗੀਆਂ | ਚੀਂ ਚੀਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਿਰ ਖਾ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ | " ਮੈਂ ਬੋਲੀ , " ਇਹ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਤਾਂ ਚਿੜੀਆਂ ਨੇ | ਤੇਰੇ ਗੀਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਚੋਗਾ ਚੁਗਣ ਆਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ , ਚੋਗਾ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਉੱਡ ਜਾਣਗੀਆਂ | " ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ , " ਇਹ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਯਾਰ ਨੇ , ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਆਟੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਚਿੜੀਆਂ | ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਨਜ਼ਮ ਮੋਗੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਲਿਖਾਂਗਾ | " ਸੋ ਉਸਨੇ ਪੂਰੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਹੀ ' ਆਟੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਚਿੜੀਆਂ ' ਲਿਖ ਦਿਤੀ |

ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਸਦੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ' ਪੀੜਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਰਾਗਾ ' ਛਪ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਸੀ | ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਖੁਸ਼ ਸੀ | ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਪਟਵਾਰੀ ਲੱਗਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ | ਫੇਰ ਉਸਨੇ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਛੱਡ ਦਿਤੀ | ਪਹਿਲੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਉਸਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪਰੇਮਿਕਾ ' ਮੀਨਾ ' ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕੁੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਰਪਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਛੇਤੀ ਹੀ ਉਸਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ , ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਚਲੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ | ਦੂਜੀ ਵੇਰ ਫੇਰ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਦੇ ਸਾਏ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਜਕੜ ਲਿਆ | ਤੇ ਉਹ ਅਮੀਰ ਕੁੜੀ ' ਰਸ਼ੀਆ ' ਚਲੀ ਗਈ | ਉਹਨੀਂ ਦਿਨੀਂ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਬਹੁਤ ਖੁਸ਼ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕੁੜੀ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਊਥੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਬੁਲਾ ਲਵੇਗੀ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਵਿਆਹ ਕਰਵਾ ਲੈਣਗੇ | ਤੇ ਫੇਰ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਉਡੀਕਦਾ ਉਡੀਕਦਾ ਥੱਕ ਗਿਆ | ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਉਸਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਰਸਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਟਾਈਟਲ ਪੇਜ਼ ਤੇ ਫ਼ੋਟੇ ਛਪੀ ਹੋਈ ਵੇਖੀ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਉਸਨੇ ਕਿਸੀ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਆਹ ਕਰਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ | ਸ਼ਿਵ ਤੜਫਿਆ , ਲੁੱਛਿਆ ਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਝੋਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਰ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਗਾਉਣ ਲੱਗਿਆ :

ਮਾਏਂ ਨੀ ਮਾਏਂ , ਮੇਰੇ ਗੀਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੈਣਾਂ ਵਿਚ
ਬਿਰਹੋਂ ਦੀ ਰੜਕ ਪਵੇ |

ਤੇ ਫੇਰ ਉੱਚੀ-ਉੱਚੀ ਰੋਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ | ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਵਰਾਇਆ | ਮੈਂ ਵੀ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਕਾਰਨ ਪੁੱਛਣ ਲੱਗੀ | ਉਸ ਕੁਝ ਨਾ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਤੇ ਫੇਰ ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਉਹ ਆਇਆ ਤੇ ਆਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਉਪਰੋਕਤ ਘਟਨਾ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਰੋ ਪਿਆ | ਮੈਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਦਿਲਾਸਾ ਦਿਤਾ | ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ , " ਤੇਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਇਥੇ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ | ਜੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਿਆ , ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਲਈ ਹੀਰਿਆਂ ਵਰਗੇ ਮੋਤੀ ਕਿਉਂ ਲੁਟਾਵੇਂ ? ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਭਾਲ | ਕੀ ਪਤੈ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਸੁਨਹਿਰੀ ਕਿਰਨ ਤੇਰਾ ਇੰਤਜ਼ਾਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੋਵੇ | " ਤੇ ਫੇਰ ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ , " ਖੁਸ਼ ਰਹਿਣ ਦਾ ਯਤਨ ਕਰ | ਏਸ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਵੀਰੇ ਵੀਰੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਬਿਠਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ | ਏਸ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਚੋਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਏਨੀਆਂ ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਮਿਲਣਗੀਆਂ , ਤੈਥੋਂ ਸੰਭਾਲੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣੀਆਂ | " ਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਭਵਿੱਖਬਾਣੀ ਸੱਚੀ ਹੋਈ | ਇਸ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਚੋਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਏਨੀਆਂ ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਮਿਲੀਆਂ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਹੋਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ ਕਿ ਹੁਣ ਉਸਦਾ ਗ਼ਮ ਉੱਧਲ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ |

ਮੈਂ ਉਸਦੀ ਹਾਨਣ ਸਾਂ | ਮੇਰੀ ਉਹਦੀ ਦੁੱਖ-ਸੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਸੀ | ਇਕ ਭਾਵੁਕ ਜਿਹਾ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਾ ਬਣ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਸੀ | ਕਦੇ ਕਦੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਉਦਾਸ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੋਢੇ ਤੇ ਸਿਰ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ | ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀ ਉਹਦੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਾਤਮਕ ਪਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਉਸਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ | ਮੇਰੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਕੁਝ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਸਦਾ ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਆਉਣਾ ਗਵਾਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ | ਇਕ ਵਾਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਸਿਰਫਿਰੇ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਤਾੜਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਨਾ ਆਵੇ | ਪਰ ਉਹ ਕਦੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਧੌਂਸ ਸਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੀ | ਉਸ ਕਿਹਾ , " ਕੋਈ ਮਾਈ ਦਾ ਲਾਲ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਰੋਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ | ਉਹ ਆਵੇਗਾ ਤੇ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਆਵੇਗਾ | " ਉਹ ਕੇਵਲ ਆਇਆ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਗੋਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਇਕ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਤੇ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ | ਉਸਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਿੱਘੀ ਬੁੱਕਲ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਰੋਮ-ਰੋਮ ਵਿਚ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ | ਉਸਦੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਤੇ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇਦਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਚੇਤੇ ਵਿਚ ਬਰਕਰਾਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਉਸਨੇ ਇਕ ਗੀਤ " ਤੂੰ ਆਈ ਮੇਰੇ ਗਰਾਂ " ਵਿਚ ਵਾਰ ਵਾਰ ਗਾਇਆ ਹੈ |

ਇਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਉਸਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਭਰੇ ਗੀਤ ਲਿਖੇ | 1960-61-62 ਦੀ ਉਸਦੀ ਕਵਿਤਾ ਗਵਾਹ ਹੈ | ਸ਼ਿਵ ਜ਼ਿੱਦੀ ਸੀ , ਹਠ ਪਿੱਟਦਾ ਸੀ | ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਆਦਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਗੁਲਾਮ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਸੀ | ਉਸਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਤੇ ਸਿਗਰਟਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ | ਪਰ ਉਹ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਨਾ ਨਿਭਾ ਸਕਿਆ | ਯਾਰਾਂ-ਦੋਸਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਪਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਕੇ ਉਸਦਾ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਬਣਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਤੇ ਉਹੀ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਡੁੱਬੀ | ਅੰਤਲੇ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਇੰਗਲੈਂਡ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਉਥੇ ਮਣਾਂ ਮੂੰਹੀ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਪਿਆਈ ਗਈ | ਤੇ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਉਹੀ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਬਣਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਲਹੂ ਵਿਚ ਰਚ ਗਈ ਤੇ ਜਾਨ ਲੇਵਾ ਬਣੀਂ |

ਉਸਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਬੜੀ ਤਲਖ਼ ਸੀ , ਤੱਤੀ ਸੀ | ਜਿਸਨੇ ਵੀ ਫੂਕਾਂ ਮਾਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ ਉਸਦੇ ਬੁੱਲ ਸੜ ਗਏ | ਉਹ ਜੋ ਵੀ ਵਾਅਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ , ਉਹ ਉਸਦੇ ਸਿਗਰਟ ਦੇ ਧੂੰਏ ਵਾਂਗ ਉੱਡ ਜਾਂਦਾ | ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਬਰਬਾਦ ਕਰਨ ਤੇ ਤੁਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ | ਪੈਸੇ ਦੀ ਘਾਟ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ | ਜਿੰਨੇ ਵੀ ਪੈਸੇ ਜੇਬ ਵਿਚ ਹੁੰਦੇ , ਉੜਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ | ਉਸਨੂੰ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ | ਇਹੀ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੇ ਛੇਤੀ ਤੁਰ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ | ਉਸਨੂੰ ਟੀ.ਬੀ. ਹੈ | ਉਸਦੇ ਫੇਫੜੇ ਛਲਣੀ ਹਨ | ਉਹਨੇ ਸੈਨੀਟੋਰੀਅਮ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ | ਇਕ ਵਾਰ ਮੈਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਝਿੜਕਿਆ ਕਿ ਜੇ ਉਹ ਇੰਜ ਹੀ ਡਰਾਮੇਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਤਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ | ਤੇ ਉਹ ਦੂਰੀਆਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੀਮਤ ਤੇ ਬਰਦਾਸ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ | ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਇਆ | ਉਦੋਂ ਉਹਨੇ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਵਿਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਡੁੰਘਿਆਈ ਨਾਲ ਸੋਚਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ | ਇਥੋਂ ਤਕ ਕਿ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਤਖ਼ੱਲਸ ' ਬਟਾਲਵੀ ' ਵੀ ਲਿਖਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਗਿਆ | 1962 ਵਿਚ ਮੁੜ ਉਸਨੇ ਸ. ਕਾਲਜ , ਨਾਭਾ ਵਿਖੇ ਦਾਖ਼ਲਾ ਲੈ ਲਿਆ |

ਦਸੰਬਰ 1962 ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੀ ਸ਼ਾਦੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ | ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਸੀ | ਉਸਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲਿਖਿਆ , " ਤੇਰਾ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਤੀ ਸੋਹਣਾ , ਸੁਨੱਖਾ ਤੇ ਜ਼ਹੀਨ ਹੈ | ਆਸ ਹੈ ਤੂੰ ਉਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਖੁਸ਼ ਰਹੇਂਗੀ | " ਮੇਰੇ ਪਤੀ ਰਾਮਗੜੀਆ ਕਾਲਜ , ਫਗਵਾੜਾ ਵਿਖੇ ਪਰੋਫ਼ੈਸਰ ਸਨ ਤੇ ਉਥੋਂ ਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਪਰੋਫ਼ੈਸਰ ਜਗਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਛਾਬੜਾ ਨਾਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਅਕਸਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਜਾਇਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ | ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿਆਹ ਵਾਲੀ ਰਾਤ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਬਰਾਤ ਮੇਰੇ ਬਾਬੁਲ ਦੇ ਵਿਹੜੇ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠੀ ਸੀ , ਸ਼ਿਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਦੋਸਤ ਸ. ਦਲੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਸਿਸਟੈਂਟ ਡਾਇਰੈਕਟਰ , ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਭਾਗ , ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਆਇਆ | ਮੇਰਾ ਉਸਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਤਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਉਹ ਉਦਾਸ ਸੀ | ਤਕਰੀਬਨ ਅੱਧਾ ਘੰਟਾ ਠਹਿਰਿਆ , ਚਾਹ-ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਤਾ | ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਗਨ ਫੜਾਇਆ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਗਿਆ | ਉਸ ਰਾਤ ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸੀ | ਉਸਦੇ ਮੇਜ਼ਬਾਨ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਈ ਸਾਲਾਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦਿਨ ਉਹ ਬਹਤ ਰੋਇਆ ਤੇ ਇਕ ਨਜ਼ਮ ' ਇਕ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ' ਲਿਖੀ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਉਸਨੇ ਲਿਖਿਆ -" ਅੱਜ ਅਸੀਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਦੀ ਜੂਹ ਵਿਚ ਮੁਰਦਾ ਦਿਲ ਇਕ ਦੱਬਣ ਆਏ | " ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ ਮੋਗੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਿਆ |

ਫੇਰ ਉਹ ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸੰਗਰੂਰ ਮਿਲਣ ਆਇਆ | ਮੇਰੇ ਪਤੀ ਸ਼ਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗੇ , " ਸ਼ਿਵ , ਮੈਂ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਪਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਲਿਆ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ | ਕੇਹੜੀ ਚੱਲਗੀ ? " ਸ਼ਿਵ ਨੇ ਇਕਦਮ ਗੱਲ ਟੋਕਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ , " ਸ਼ਿਵ ਸ਼ਰੀਫ਼ ਵੀ ਹੁੰਦੈ | ਤੂੰ ਮੈਂਨੂੰ ਫਗਵਾੜੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਨਾ ਸਮਝ | ਪਰਮ ਦੂਜੀਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਵਰਗੀ ਨਹੀਂ | ਇਹ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਵੀ ਏ , ਧੀ ਵੀ ਏ , ਦੋਸਤ ਵੀ ਤੇ ਮਹਿਰਮ ਵੀ | " ਇਹ ਕਹਿਕੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਚੁੱਪ ਵੱਟ ਲਈ ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਰਸੋਈ ਵਿਚ ਖਾਣਾ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝ ਗਈ |

ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਨਾਭੇ ਪੜਦਾ ਸੀ ਤੇ ਸੰਗਰੂਰ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਇਕ ਪਰੋਫ਼ੈਸਰ ਤਰਲੋਚਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਮਜੀਠੀਆ ਨਾਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕੋਲ ਆਇਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ | ਤੇ ਫੇਰ ਉਹ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਆਉਂਦੇ ; ਸਾਡੇ ਕੋਲ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੇ | ਉਹ ਜਿੰਨੀ ਵਾਰ ਸੰਗਰੂਰ ਆਇਆ , ਸਾਡੇ ਕੋਲ ਹੀ ਠਹਿਰਦਾ | 1965 ਤਕ ਮੁਲਾਕਾਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਿਲਸਿਲਾ ਜਾਰੀ ਰਿਹਾ | ਇਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਉਹ ਬੰਬਈ ਫਿ਼ਲਮ ਇੰਡਸਟਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਇਕ-ਦੋ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਫਿ਼ਲਮਾਂ ਲਈ ਗੀਤ ਦਿੱਤੇ | ਉਸਨੂੰ ਰੁਝੇਵਾਂ ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ | ਇਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਸਟੇਟ ਬੈਂਕ ਵਿਚ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਮਿਲ ਗਈ |

ਉਸਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਲਈ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਤੇ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਕੈਡਮੀ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰ ਮਿਲੇ |

ਫੇਰ ! ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਆਈ ਕਿ ਉਸਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ | ਉਹ ਉਸਦੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਮਨ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਸੀ | ਸਭ ਨੇ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਹੁਣ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ ਤੇ ' ਛੇਤੀ ਤੁਰ ਜਾਣ ਦੀ ' ਗੱਲ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ | ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨ ਸੀ | ਖ਼ੂਬਸੂਰਤ ਬੀਵੀ ਮਿਲੀ ਤੇ ਦੋ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਵੀ ਮਿਲ ਗਏ | ਪਰ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਰਿਝਾ ਨਾ ਸਕਿਆ | ਘਰ-ਗਰਹਿਸਥੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀਆਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਬਿਰਹੋਂ ਦੇ ਸੇਕ ਨੂੰ ਮੱਠਿਆਂ ਨਾ ਕਰ ਸਕੇ | ਉਹ ਪੋਹਲੀ , ਭੱਖੜੇ ਤੇ ਕੰਡਿਆਲੀਆਂ ਥੋਹਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ, ਅੱਥਰੇ ਨਿਆਣੇ ਵਾਂਗ ਅੜੀਆਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਇਸ ਜਹਾਨ ਤੋਂ ਤੁਰ ਗਿਆ |

ਉਘੜ-ਦੁਘੜ ਲਿਖਾਈ ਉਸਦੀ ਬੀਮਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਸਬੂਤ ਸੀ | ਮੈਂ ਵਾਪਸੀ ਡਾਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਘਬਰਾਵੇ ਨਾ , ਅਸੀਂ ਜਲਦੀ ਹੀ ਉਸਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਲੈਣ ਆਵਾਂਗੇ | ਇਲਾਜ ਖੁਣੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਵਾਂਗੇ | ਪਰ ਹੋਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਮਨਜ਼ੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ | ਤੇ ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਦਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ | ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਇਕ ਅਖ਼ਬਾਰ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਵਲੂੰਧਰਿਆ ਗਿਆ | ਖ਼ਬਰ ਨਾਲ ਕੁਝ ਫ਼ੋਟੋਆਂ ਵੀ ਛਪੀਆਂ ਸਨ | ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਚਿੱਟੀ ਚਾਦਰ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਸਟੇਜ ਤੇ ਖੜਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਟੇਜ ਤੇ ਪੈਸੇ ਸੁੱਟਣੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ | ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੋਇਆ , ਮੈਂ ਬੜਾ ਰੋਈ | ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਲਾਹਣਤਾਂ ਪਾਈਆਂ ਕਿ ਜੇ ਬਟਾਲੇ ਦੇ ਲੋਕ ਏਨੇ ਹੀ ਪੈਸੇ ਸਿੱਟਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਮੀਰ ਲੋਕ ਸਨ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਉਸਦਾ ਇਲਾਜ ਕਿਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਾ ਸਕੇ ?

ਦੋ-ਤਿੰਨ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ , ਪਟਿਆਲੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਮਿਲ ਗਈ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੌਸਲੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਪੱਤਰ ਲਿਖਿਆ | ਜਵਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਉਸਨੇ ਮੈਂਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਜਤਾਈ | ਅਸੀਂ ਪਟਿਆਲੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਗਏ | ਮੈਂ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵੇਰਾਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਰਹੀ ਸਾਂ | ਉਸਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵੱਲ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ | ਉਸਨੂੰ ਦਿਲਾਸਾ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਪਰੋਕਤ ਘਟਨਾ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਕੌਣ ਕੀ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ | ਕਰਨ-ਕਰਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੀ ਖਾ-ਪੀ ਗਏ | ਦੁਪਹਿਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ | ਉਹ ਖਾਣਾ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰੀ ਬੈਠੀ ਸੀ | ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਕਿਹਾ , " ਤੂੰ ਏਨਾਂ ਕੁਝ ਕਿਉਂ ਬਣਾਇਆ ? ਮੈਂ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦਾ ਅਫ਼ਸੋਸ ਕਰਨ ਆਈ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਦਾਅਵਤ ਖਾਣ | " ਉਸ ਕਿਹਾ , " ਜੇ ਅੱਜ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਜਿਉਂਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੇ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਚਲਾ ਕੇ ਮਾਰਨਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਪਰਮ ਆਈ ਏ ਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਇਹ ਬਣਾਇਐ | " ਕਹਿਕੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਭਰ ਲਈਆਂ ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਡੱਸ ਡੱਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਰੋ ਪਈ | ਉਸ ਰਾਤ ਉਸਨੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਉਣ ਨਾ ਦਿਤਾ | ਕਿੰਨੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ | ਸ਼ਿਵ ਦੀ ਬੀਮਾਰੀ ਦੀਆਂ | ਅੰਤਲੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੀਆਂ |ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਵਿਆਹੁਤਾ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ | ਪਰ ਨਹੀਂ | ਉਸਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਚੰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਲਗਦਾ | ਉਸਦੀ ਤਰੇਹ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਬੁਝਣ ਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਲੈਂਦੀ | ਉਸਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਜਿਸਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ | ਉਸਨੂੰ ਭਰ ਜੋਬਨ ਰੁੱਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਚਾਅ ਸੀ; ਉਹ ਤੁਰ ਗਿਆ | ਉਸਦੇ ਕਹਿਣ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ " ਜੋਬਨ ਰੁੱਤੇ ਜੋ ਵੀ ਮਰਦਾ , ਫੁੱਲ ਬਣੇ ਜਾਂ ਤਾਰਾ | " ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਉਹੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਫੁੱਲ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤਾਰਾ | ਪਰ ਉਸਦੀਆਂ ਯਾਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਫੁੱਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਮਹਿਕ , ਮਹਿਕ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹੇਗੀ , ਇਹ ਮੇਰਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਹੈ - ਆਮੀਨ |

Punjabi poet Surjit Patar gets Padma Shri

The announcement of Padma Shri for renowned poet Surjit Patar has been greeted with all round applause and celebration. The poet who is considered as a living legend has dedicated his recognition to Punjabi language and literature. “This is a tradition which was started by great souls like Guru Nanak and Baba Sheikh Farid and I am just taking this tradition forward,” said Dr Patar, whose phone rings continuously as congratulatory messages pour in. Patar, a recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award, Panchnad Puruskar and Saraswati Samman in 2010, has to his credit collection of works like Hawa Vich Likhe Harf, Lavzaan dee dragah, Birkh Arz Kare, Hanere Vich Sulagdi Swaran Mala. He is also known for translation of plays by Federico Garcia Lorca. Patar has also translated poems by Pablo Neruda and Bertolt Brecht. 65-year-old Patar debuted on the Punjabi poetry scene in the mid 60s. Patar is also known as people’s poet.

Eminent Punjabi writer Kartar Singh Duggal Passed away

Eminent Punjabi writer Kartar Singh Duggal died here today of old-age related ailments. He was 94.

The writer, who had also served as a Director of All India Radio, was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Monday last and the end came this evening.

Duggal has carved a place for himself by penning novels, short stories and plays in Punjabi, Urdu, Hindi, and English, with equal elan and was a winner of Sahitya Akademi award and Padma Bhushan.

Duggal is survived by his wife Ayesha, a doctor, and a son.

A master story-teller, Duggal, during a career spanning for over four decades, has written 24 collections of short stories and ten novels weaving the historical strands of the Partition saga and intricacies of human relationships in modern society.

Considered a virtual pioneer of modern Punjabi fiction, Duggal also penned seven plays, seven works of literary criticism, two collections poems and an autobiography.

Many of his books have been adopted by various universities in graduation courses and translated into other Indian languages.

Born on March 1, 1917, to Jiwan Singh Duggal and Satwant Kaur in Dhamalin Rawalpindi district now in Pakistan, Kartar Singh Duggal did his MA in English from Forman Christian College, Lahore, and started his professional career with All India Radio (AIR) where he worked from 1942-66 in various capacities including as Station Director.

For AIR, Duggal wrote and produced programmes in Punjabi and other languages.

He was the Secretary/Director of National Book Trust of India from 1966-73 before serving as an Advisor in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting from 1973 to 1976.

Duggal was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1988. In 2007, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, the highest honour given by theAkademi.

As a chronicler of tragic social events in the wake of the Partition, Duggalearned the repute of a naturalistic writer.

However, it was his exploration of a woman's pschye that gave him adistrinct identity and made him a powerful voice of the other gender in a patriarchal society.

In his writings, Duggal never left behind the cultural baggage of his Pakistan's province of Punjab. The environs of Pothohar, especially its dialect, became an integral part of his works which were filled with nostalgia and intimacy.

Duggal was was honoured with almost all major literary prizes including theSahitya Akademi Award, Ghalib Award, Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award,Bhai Mohan Singh Vaid Award, and Soviet Land Nehru Award.

He has founded many institutions, including Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation, Institute of Social and Economic Change, Bangalore and ZakirHusain Educational Foundation.

Duggal had been a member of many literary and cultural centres, the President of Punjabi Sahitya Sabha (Punjabi Literary Society), Delhi.

He was a Fellow of the Punjabi University in 1984 and a nominated member of Rajya Sabha in August, 1997.

Among the famous short stories by Duggal were "Birth of a Song" (in English), "Come Back My Master" (English), "Dangar" (Animal), "Ikk ChhitChananh Di" (One Drop of Light), "Nawan Ghar" (New House), "The Making of a Militant And Other Short Stories", "Sonar Bangla" (Golden Bungalow) and "Tarkalan Vele" (In the Evening).

"Veehveen Sadi te Hor Kavitaavaan" (Twentieth Century and Other Poems) and "Kandhe Kandhe" (Shore Shore) are among his well-known collection of poemswhile his well-known novels include Sarad Poonam Ki Raat (A Cold Full Moon Night) and Tere Bhanhe (Your Wishes).

Duggal's other works include Natak (True Nanak) (One-Act Play), BandDarwaaze (Closed Doors), Mitti Musalmaan Ki (A Muslim’s Earth), Philosophy and Faith of Sikhism and Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafir, A History of Punjabi Literature, Sain Bulleh Shah, The Mystic Muse, Soyi HuiHira.

Indian origins

Lohri is the Punjabis' and Dogras' cultural celebration on the eve of the winter solstice. However, instead of celebrating Lohri on the eve of winter solstice, Punjabis celebrate it on the last day of the month during which winter solstice takes place, Paush. This is due to linking Lohri to the Bikrami calendar. Among Sindhi's the festival is popularly known as Lal loee. On the day of Lal Loee kids bring wood sticks from their grand parents and aunties and like a fire camp burnt these sticks in the night with people enjoying, dancing and playing around fire

According to folk lore, in ancient Punjab Lohri was celebrated on the eve of winter solstice day. It is for this reason that people believe the Lohri night is meant to be the longest night of the year and on the day after Lohri, day light is meant to increase.

Over time, people have associated Lohri to the tale of Dulla Bhatti. The central character of most Lohri songs is Dulla Bhatti,who lived in Punjab during the reign of Emperor Akbar. He was regarded as a hero in Punjab. Besides robbing the rich, he rescued Hindu girls being forcibly taken to be sold in slave market of the Middle East. He arranged their marriages to Hindu boys with rituals and provided them with dowries. So every other Lohri song has words to express gratitude to Dulla Bhatti.

Dulla Bhatti was a rebel whose lineage was of Bhatti Rajputs . His anscestors were the rulers of Pindi Bhattian in Sandal Bar area of present day Pakistan. He was a hero of all Punjabis and his var (life story) is available on the internet

Dr. Dalip Kaur Tiwana

Dr. Dalip Kaur Tiwana is universally regarded as one of the leading Punjabi novelists of today and has published twenty seven novels, seven collections of short stories, the first part of her autobiography and a literary biography She has won awards, both regional and national, and is widely translated author.

Born on May 4, 1935 in Village Rabbon of Ludhiana district in a well-to-do land-owing family, she was educated at Patiala where her uncle, Sardar Sahib Sardar Tara Singh Sidhu was Inspector General of Prisons. She had a distinguished academic career, getting a first class first M.A., and the first woman in the region to get the Ph.D. degree from Punjab University in 1963, Dr. Dalip Kaur Tiwana joined the Punjabi University at Patiala, as a Lecturer and then went on to become Professor and Head of the Department of Punjabi and Dean, Faculty of Languages. She was a brilliant teacher and researcher and made a significant contributions to literary and critical studies in Punjabi. She was also a UGC National Lecturer for a year.

Dr. Dalip Kaur's literary career as a creative writer commenced with the publication of her first book of short stories Sadhna in 1961, which was declared the best book in its genre by the Department of Languages, Government of Punjab. She produced seven collections of short stories before switching over to novel-writing, in which art-form she was destined to achieve great eminence. Her second novel Eho Hamara ZeeUna won her the Sahitya Akademy Award in 1972. Thereafter, virtually every one of her works won her an award. The Ministry of Education and Social Welfare honoured her book of stories for children called pa11jan IJiCh Parmeshwar in 1975, while the Department of Languages, Government of Punjab, conferred the "Nanak Singh Puruskar" on her novel Peele Patian di Dastan in 1980 and "Gurmukh Singh Mu safir Puruskar" on her autobiography Nange pa rion da Safa r in 1 982. Awards and honours have flowed from outside the Punjab as well. In 1985, the International Association of Punjabi Artists and Authors (IAAPA) based in Canada honoured her with an award in 1985. "Nanjanagudu Thirumalamba" award for her novel Katha Kuknoos Di came from Shashwathi, Karnataka and "Vagdevi" award for Duni Suhava Bagh was given by Bhartiya Bhasha Parishad, Calcutta, in 1998.

For her outstanding contribution to Punjabi literature, Dr. Dalip Kaur received the "Shiromani Sahityakar" award from the Punajb Government in 1987, the "Best Novelist of the Decade" award from Punjabi Academy, Delhi, in 1994 and the "Kartar Singh Dhaliwal" award from Punjabi Sahit Academy, Ludhiana. She was among the distinguished Sikh personalities who were honoured on the occasion of the Tricentenary Celebrations of the Birth of the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib in 1999.

Honoured during Tercentenary celebrations of the Birth of Khalsa for outstanding contribution in the field of language, art and literature at Anandpur Sahib on April 11, 1999.
Saraswati Samman for the Year 2001 by the KK Birla Foundation.
Entries in "Famous Women of India," "Who's who of India","Reference Asia","Internatinal Biographia","International Who's who, 1995"
Works have been translated in English, French, Russian, Urdu, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati and other Indian languages.
Three novels have been telecast from doordarshan and many more are on the waiting list.

Many of Dr. Dalip Kaur Tiwana's short stories and novels have been translated into Hindi and other Indian languages, and English. Such is her Fate (Punjabi University), Journey on bare feet (Orient Longman), Gone are the Rivers (Macmillan) are some of the English translations, which are readily available. The Tale of the Phoenix (Ajanta) translated by Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh and Bhupinder Singh and Elizabeth Siler of the USA will soon be out. Urvaslu is being rendered into English by Prof Jasbir Jain. Khushwant Singh, Jai Rattan and Danielle Gill from Paris are some the other translators of Dr. Tiwana's works. Doordarshan has also telecast a few serials based on her writings.

Dr. Daiip Kaur has played important roles in distinguished bodies, both academic and literary. Currently, she is associated with the Sahitya Academy (Delhi), Punjab Arts Council (Chandigarh), Punjab Sahit Academy (Chandigarh), Punjabi Sahit Academy (Ludhiana), National Book Trust of India, Bhartiya Janapith, K K. Birla Folmdation, Kendn Punjabi Lekhak Sabha in various capacities. She is President of the Punjabi Sahit Academy, Chandigarh and Life-Fellow auld nominated Senator of the Punjabi University.

During the course of her career as writer and academician, she visited several countries to preside over or participate in important international conferences. For example, she chaired sessions at the International Punjabi Conference held in U.K. in 1980, participated in International Writing Together anal Women in the 20th Century held in Scotland in 1990 and presided over an international literary meet organised by California Sahit Sabha in the U.S.A. in 2000.

By common or general consent, Dr. Dalip Kaur Tiwana is the leading, most productive and most popular Punjabi novelist of our Ages. For the last forty years or more, she has been engaged in creative writing without any major interruption. There is thematic and formal variety in her writings. Her language in particular is spontaneous, lyrical and compressed to the point of being a marvel of economy and elegance.

Over the years, she has moved from a preoccupation with gender issues to intellectual contemplation of fundamental human problem, and from there to spiritual transcendence. While negotiating the problems of life and death, tradition and modernity, men and women, towns and villages in her works, she remains committed to the Indian spiritual and ethical vision. One could say of her that she combines European energy with Asiatic calm in her life and thought.

ਐ ਕਵਿਤਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਗਲ ਪਾਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੋਚ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਾਹਵਾਂ.

ਕੁਝ ਪਲ ਸਾਲਮ ਸੂਰਤ ਹੋਕੇ ਆ ਮੈਂ ਵੀ ਜੀ ਜਾਵਾਂ,

ਊਣਮਟੂਣਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਮੰਦਿਰ

ਬਿਨਾਂ ਆਸਰੇ ਖਲਕਤ ਭਾਸਦੀ ਤੇ ਖੁਦ ਦਿਸ ਨਿਥਾਵਾਂ,

ਤਿਲ ਤੋਂ ਛੋਟਾ ਖਸਖਸ ਵਰਗਾ ਕਵਿਤਾ ਦਾ ਹੈ ਡੇਰਾ
