The Fami-Card started out its life as an original Super Mario Brothers

French modder Kotomi carefully ripped out its guts and transplanted them with the innards of one of those NOAC (NES on a Chip) system clones.

The console manages to cram in an NES cartridge slot, power and reset buttons, a pair of joystick ports and composite video and stereo audio outputs.

There’s something just a little mind-bending about a game cartridge that isn’t a cartridge at all, and instead is a console itself. If you think about the concept too hard, it might just cause a rift in the space-time continuum.

Rumors abound last month about a possible port of Tenchu: Shadow Assassins (the official title in the US) proved to be true — the game will be released in Japan on February 12th of next year for 5,040 yen. Ubisoft’s US press release for the game issued back in September indicated the game will be exclusive to the Wii, so no one knows yet whether we’ll get the port here in the States. A game featuring horror elements and a bit of the ol’ tomato sauce has been “refused classification” in Australia, which is as good as a ban.

Know what’s so maddening, both as an Australian and a fan of common sense? It’s not the fact the country lacks an R18+ rating. That issues been argued to death. No, it’s the inconsistency. Silent Hill, and now this, get the chop because (presumably in this case, since we don’t know exactly why) they’re violent horror games. And yet Gears of War 2 gets the OK when you are at times literally swimming in blood.

Just as your head begins to clear from downing your seventh pitcher of holiday eggnog, Electronic Arts announced plans to push off and catch a mad vert when Skate 2 nails its retail landing in January. The sequel will do a frontside 360 in North America on January 21, while skateboarders elsewhere will be able to get their trick on two days later on January 23.

Next month EA will also launch a Skate 2 web application, creatively titled “Graphics Creator,” which will let players create customized graphics for their in-game decks and clothing. Additionally, would-be shredders in North America who pre-order Skate 2 will grab a code to unlock a “Throwback Pack” that will allow access to retro accessories, gestures and clothing. When you bail from a botched nosegrind, at least you’ll look good in your Skate or Die shirt.

Bethesda plans next month to make available user content creation tools for its open-world RPG Fallout 3, with paid downloadable content for PC and Xbox 360 users coming in January.

The official editor is entitled G.E.C.K., or Garden of Eden Creation Kit. It will be offered free to PC players.

Even as recently as the month before Fallout 3’s release, the fate of its mod tools were in question, with marketing VP Pete Hines claiming that mods were “not on the schedule,” because “it takes a lot of time and effort.”

The new single-player DLC, on the other hand, has long been promised ahead of the game’s release, and is exclusive to the PC and Xbox 360 platforms; on PC, it will be distributed through Microsoft’s Games for Windows Live platform, which is integrated into the game.

The first DLC pack, “Operation: Anchorage,” will reproduce the liberation of Chinese-occupied Alaska, and will ship in January 2009. Another pack, the Pittsburgh-area “The Pit,” will ship in February, and a third, “Broken Steel,” will ship in March, continuing the main quest line by allowing players to join the armored Brotherhood of Steel.

Modding has been a significant part of Bethesda’s player community since 1996s The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, which players modified despite having no sanctioned tools with which to do so. For the third and fourth main entries in the series, Morrowind and Oblivion, Bethesda released official mod tools, each called The Elder Scrolls Construction Set.

No price points were given for the paid downloads

Tomb Raider: Underworld hit stores this week, and in an effort to craft a high early ranking on Metacritic, Eidos has tasked a PR firm to try and convince publications to hold off on their reviews if the scores are below a certain threshold (via Shacknews).

The story first broke when GameSpot U.K. journalist Guy Cocker posted on Twitter that he received a call from Eidos’ PR firm, saying that if Underworld was going to get a score below 8.0, they wanted the review delayed until Monday — three days after the game’s release on Friday. Videogamer247 then contacted the U.K. PR firm, Barrington Harvey, which confirmed they were indeed calling publications to try and quell negative reviews.

“That’s right. We’re trying to manage the review scores at the request of Eidos,” a representative said. Explaining why, the representative said, “Just that we’re trying to get the Metacritic rating to be high, and the brand manager in the U.S. that’s handling all of Tomb Raider has asked that we just manage the scores before the game is out, really, just to ensure that we don’t put people off buying the game, basically.”

However, a statement released by Simon Byron, one of Barrington Harvey’s directors, insists that no demands were made to delay reviews, and publications are free to put their reviews up whenever they like, whatever the score. “Our original NDA stated that in order to receive an advance copy of the game, reviewers agreed not to post reviews ahead of 5:00pm, Wednesday 19th November 2008. Nothing else. No further obligations whatsoever,” the statement read. Byron noted that there are already scores up that are below 8 out of 10, and explained that, “As an ex-journalist myself, I firmly believe in editorial integrity and the right to express an individual opinion. As an agency, we never — ever — make demands of the press in terms of awarding scores; at the end of the day, they are free to score as they wish.”

The statement did, though, admit that “Barrington Harvey has been working hard to ensure the launch scores of Tomb Raider Underworld are in line with our internal review predictions over the launch weekend,” which is where you fall into the grey area of semantics in this sort of situation. Sure, they’re not demanding that reviews be suppressed, but is merely asking for reviews to be delayed any less devious?

As many likely remember, this would make for Eidos’ second reviews controversy just within the last 12 months, after a firestorm erupted around Kane & Lynch when it seemed as though then-GameSpot executive editor Jeff Gerstmann was fired partly over his negative review. Both Eidos and GameSpot, however, denied that was the case.

USA! USA! USA! In what can only be described as the ultimate in convergence devices, some guy on eBay is selling a Wii with a Nintendo 64 cartridge slot that actually plays real games. What’s most impressive, I suppose, is that the whole thing looks pretty natural with the slight exception of the side panel jutting outwards a bit to make room for the N64 controller port.

Take note, Nintendo: when you release Wii HD or whatever it’ll be called, please include a cartridge slot with various adapters for NES, Super NES, and N64 games.

After watching Enemy of the State, we like to stay off the grid, even if we don’t exactly understand what the grid is or why it should be avoided. This may just be enough to turn us though: Ubisoft says that those who register their Gamertags or PSN IDs with Ubisoft.com will be able to download a free Altair skin to use in Prince of Persia.

Is it a classic example of brand dilution? Sure! But is it a cool enough case of brand dilution to make us ignore that? Absolutely.

It features a screenshots section a section containing general information, and a section providing a wealth of information about the new video editor feature:

Exclusive to the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV, the all-new Video Editor feature allows you to capture in-game footage (whether single-player or multiplayer gameplay), make real-time edits and render out clips as WMV video files. When something amazing happens while playing the game, simply press the F2 button on your keyboard and the last 30-45 seconds (duration varies based on user settings and specifications) of gameplay will be automatically dumped to your hard drive as raw footage. hen, load up the in-game Video Editor (easily accessible through your in-game mobile phone) to edit away - with a suite of tools that can change the camera angle, audio, speed, and depth of field - plus post-production special effects to tweak colors and add filters. You can also digitally splice together a collection of your raw clips to create a montage video. Add in-game music, custom titling and transitions to polish it off and then share your masterpiece online by uploading to Rockstar Games Social Club TV. There, you will be able to watch other Grand Theft Auto IV videos posted by Social Club members, rate and comment on videos, and participate in ongoing contests.
