D_Art Lab | Turning Point Design

Back in Italy again - this time in Biella, near Torino. Since the beginning of this week I am one of the participants of the D_Art Lab. The workshop Turning Point Design is curated by the Production Office of Cittadellarte | Fondazione Pistoletto & ADI (Association for Industrial Design) within the Torino World Design Capital event. It involves 10 Italian businesses and a group of international designers and artists, assisted by different experts and testimonials.

"The workshop is aimed towards the conception, project planning and production of turning point design objects that are in line with the new perspective which assumes sustainability and responsible creativity as factors for success in global competition of businesses and the territory."

Different creative workshops are held by Michelangelo Pistoletto, Mark Vanderbeeken & Jan-Christoph Zoels (Experientia), Ross Lovegrove, Francesco Bernabei, Edoardo Malagigi and others. Also, during the next three weeks we will visit each of the companies involved in this project (Serralunga, Aurora, etc.) and then choose with which of them we will realise a design.

I am delighted to announce that the HUGGY easy chair I designed for the Italian furniture company Lago will be presented on the Lago stand in the Milan Furniture Fair from 16.-21. April 2008.

So if you happen to be hanging out in Milan, come and get acquainted, take a look and chill out with an unconventional cozy rest on HUGGY (who can easily be turned into a relaxing guest bed for those who have seriously walked themselves off their feet). Looking forward to meeting you - a presto!

The perfect consolation for this gloomy and chilly easter holiday weather: PHUN! Described as "the 2D physics sandbox" by its maker Emil Ernerfeldt (being his Master of Science thesis at Umeå University), it delivers a playful and very enjoyable approach to the world of physics. Phun Beta is currently available to download for Windows and Linux (and apparently soon for MacOS as well).

Mr. Hopkinson's Computer

This Computer will touch your heart and make you smile! Mr. Hopkinson's Computer is certainly the most musically talented computer I have ever come across, creating beautiful cover versions in his very unique style. "I mostly like indie songs from the 80's & 90's, but I like some newer ones too" he says on his Myspace site. Check out his great interpretation of Portishead's "Roads"! Mr. Hopkinson's Computer will play live on 21. February 2008 in the Big Chill House in King's Cross, London - for sure I will be there!

A very happy and fulfilled 2008 to everyone! And a big thanks to anyone who was supporting me and my projects in 2007. It was a very busy year for me with lots of interesting stuff happening - and it seems that the new year will be just as exciting!

It looks like Punch’n’Cuddle will finally be put into production in 2008. Therefore the Punch’n’Cuddle Tour is now open to private people - so if you would like to host Punch’n’Cuddle in your home as a guest for a view days, please drop me a line here and we can arrange it. It will be then delivered to your home and be picked up again after two or three days of punching and cuddling. For practical reasons only people that live in greater London can temporarily adopt Punch’n’Cuddle (for free of course).

The future of Advertising

What had been announced already last year in December has now become real: The city of Sao Paulo banned billboards and other public advertising completely from the face of the city! Tony de Marco documented the beauty of those empty urban canvases this act left behind with a set of photographs. So let's hope that other cities will follow this wonderful idea of eliminating all those eye-cancer causing adverts soon as well! Or at least they should start encrypting all the information into QR codes, so people can decide themselves which information they want to receive (if at all) by using their mobile phones to decode it. This seems to be already quite common in Japan.
Imagine those abstract black and white patterns eventually replacing all the visual pollution that we are currently exposed to in urban environments - I like the idea of billboards going Op Art a lot! In fact I have started using a QR code generator for encrypting my own messages (like this one on the right)... turning these codes into stencils et voila: graffiti a la 21st century!

Head Light in Seoul Design Museum

I've just sent off HEAD LIGHT to South Korea, as it will participate in the upcoming exhibition "All light! - All right?" in the Hangaram Design Museum in Seoul.

HEAD LIGHT is a soft bed light in the shape of a pillow which is able to set an end to those constant fights with your partner about him wanting to sleep and you wanting to read (or the other way around). Create a soft wall of light around you, where the light is directed only where desired. "A cuddly light helps you make it through the night!"

If you are in Seoul in between 28.10. to 28.11.2007, please come and have a look - the exhibition shows an interesting and uncommon collection of lights from all over the world.

Punch'n'Cuddle on Tour!

Punch’n’Cuddle is now going on tour. He will stay in one location for a few weeks and then move on to the next. As Punch’n’Cuddle seeks to serve as the outlet valve for as many people’s emotions as possible (he is a total populist), only shared locations used by a number of individuals are suitable as a temporary home for him. Obviously he shouldn’t get abused but be treated with respect – i.e. the punches should definitely be balanced by an equal number of cuddles.

Applications for temporary adoptions are now open. Whether you work in an office and feel you really need to “let it all out” sometimes, or in a hospital or any other community based institution – if you would like to host Punch’n’Cuddle as a guest for a while, please drop me an email and we can see what we can arrange. As Punch’n’Cuddle is very open to travel anywhere, the applications are open to anyone globally. I will then figure out a tour route - the more countries this involves, the better.

Right now one Punch’n’Cuddle is hosted by the media agency Carat/Isobar in their offices in Parker Tower, overlooking Central London from the 10th floor, and another one is getting ready for a trip to Birmingham for a series of exhibitions in public spaces.

Our first gig at the Buttoned Down Live Show at 93 Feet East on Brick Lane went really well - and we are very pleased with the great reaction that we got! Lago Studio

Since late August I have exchanged London rain against Italian dolce vita, working in Lago Studio, squeezing my brain for fresh furniture ideas. Lago Studio is basically a beautiful country house, somewhere in the middle of nowhere between Padova and Venice. It is set up by and very close to the furniture company Lago as a sort of think tank for young designers, with the possibility of instant prototyping and eventual production, if the ideas are suitable.

I have already participated in a workshop here last December with some students from the Design Academy Eindhoven. This time graduates and students from the Royal College of Art, Central St. Martins and the National College of Art & Design Dublin are taking part in a two week multidisciplinary workshop, creating concepts for a new furniture collection.

The time has passed much too fast and I am almost about to leave, so I better put those pictures up quickly. Thanks so much to Diego Paccagnella, Daniele Lago and everybody else at the Lago empire for terrific and inspiring two weeks of design, pasta and wine!

Show Down!

The Great Exhibition 2007 is over - and i am really happy that i have participated in this year's Royal College of Art graduation show that has happened in a tent in Kensington Gardens, showing work of over 400 graduates from 24 different departments for two weeks. The atmosphere was truely wonderful! 72.000 visitors came to have a look, not to count the endless numbers of bugs, flies and squirrels that apparently loved our exhibits and very often took a closer look at them. Here an overview of the works that i have exhibited: Punch'n'Cuddle, Sole on Ice, Octopulse and Happy Trigger.

I was allowed to give some performances with my ICE SKATES (in the true sense of the word) on a stage that i had built for this purpose, placed in front of the tent in the park. Thanks to Monica from Harlequin Floors for the contribution of this wonderful glossy black dance floor, as well as to Justin from Interlevin Refrigeration for the free display freezer that I was able to put into the exhibition space. Here some pictures of one of the performances (taken by Nils Jorgensen).

PUNCH'N'CUDDLE found a lot of new friends during the show! I also presented a little P'n'C brother for the smaller people amongst us. Get some impressions of the punching and cuddling they both had to go through. They now look a bit rough after all those hugs and knocks - but they couldn't be happier.

Infinite happiness was also achieved by all the people who tried the HAPPY TRIGGER which is an audio-tactile gratification tool. Embedded in Happy Trigger’s music are frequencies known to have a positive effect on the human mind and body. With the actual Happy Trigger object (a headphone-hat connected to an abstract cuddly object) these audio frequencies are transferred into physical ones (tactile vibrations synchronized to the music) - so one can quite literally “bathe” in the “good vibrations”.

The serotonin molecule (neuro-transmitter responsible for happiness) being Happy Trigger’s logo is also the data container of the recorded music. Instead of just selling a CD, Happy Trigger sells USB sticks in the shape of a serotonin molecule, packaged in a glass bottle and labeled like some sort of medicine. Big, big thanks to Chris Garland, being the greatest brand character and marketing guru I could have wished for to promote Happy Trigger during the show!

The OCTOPULSE also got great feedback and will be shown soon again, not far from where the tent stood: It will participate in the BBC Blast show in the Serpentine Gallery, on the weekend of the 21. and 22. of July. If you want to get a nice quirky sound massage come by and have a look & listen!
