<p>This episode was a fun one to experience and put together. I had been seeing various Sea Shanty content pop up, starting with a <a href="https://www.profsandpints.com/baltimore" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.profsandpints.com/baltimore" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Profs and Pints</a> event in Baltimore, a Shanty night at my buddies club <a href="https://www.phantompower.net" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.phantompower.net" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Phantom Power</a> in Millersville, pa and figured I could marry them up into an episode.</p>

<p><a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://gwst.umbc.edu/meet-the-adjuncts/jessica-floyd/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://gwst.umbc.edu/meet-the-adjuncts/jessica-floyd/" target="_blank">Dr. Jessica Floyd</a> works at CCBC, the same campus my wife runs the college book store at currently and she got her doctorate studying various things including English Pornographic Poetry and ending up on taking the same angle to study Sea Chanties. (Spelled with a C, for Doctor Floyds preferred spelling.)</p>

<p>We think of Sea Chanties as drinking fun songs along the lines of The Dropkick Murphys and such, but in an academic sense, a Sea Chanty is a very specific Nautical work song practiced aboard Merchant ships plying the Atlantic and Caribbean during the age of sail.</p>

<p>Dr. Jesssica is holding a Profs and Pints event on Monday, March 23rd, 2026 at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.sospickleball.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.sospickleball.com/" target="_blank">SOS pickleball</a>, 409 S. Spring St. in Baltimore, at 6pm. I plan on being there, you should as well!</p>

<p>In conjunction with that event, my buddy Gregg booked in a Shanty night at his club in Millersville, PA last Thursday featuring the <a href="https://thesusquehannashantymen.bandcamp.com/album/way-up-river" data-type="URL" data-id="https://thesusquehannashantymen.bandcamp.com/album/way-up-river" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Susquehanna Shantymen</a>, a local shanty band, and <a href="https://mydruthers.bandcamp.com/album/coming-up-3s" data-type="URL" data-id="https://mydruthers.bandcamp.com/album/coming-up-3s" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">My Druthers,</a> a shanty band from Connecticut.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve interspersed some songs from each as well as at the end, they all gathered on stage to do Leave Her Johnny. I also put in The Ogham Stones version of the <a href="http://realmckenzies.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="http://realmckenzies.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Real Mckenzies</a> &#8220;Mainland,&#8221; a favorite of mine. We saw them on Sunday after all of this for St. Paddys day weekend.</p>

<p>Dr. Jessica has two books, one is out already and the other is coming out in May of 2026.</p>

<p>Welcome to this episode of the Shooting the Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP), episode 201.</p>

<p>This episode we weather the freezing cold and wind, head inside, and check out the Chesapeake Bay Boat Show up in Timonium, MD and the Maryland State Fairgrounds.</p>

<p>It ostensibly is a power boat show, with lots of skiffs, center consoles, fishing boats and lots of lifestyle vendors.</p>

<p>I was interested in the fishing center and talking with a charter captain out of Ocean City, MD, but they didn&#8217;t want to be on the mic. They suggested another captain, but they were away from the stand.</p>

<p>I was able to talk with Cindy Freland, a local author and publisher of childrens books specifically tailored to the Chesapeake Bay Area with her &#8220;Chesapeake Bay Adventures Book Series&#8221; over at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://cbaykidsbooks.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://cbaykidsbooks.com/" target="_blank">cbaykidsbooks.com</a>. Her series features the wildlife apparent in the Chesapeake Bay area, with everything from Oysters to Mermaids! She also helps folks self publish their stories by way of a book and seminars she hosts locally.</p>

<p>I stumbled into friend of the Podcast Haydn Foy at a booth the Maryland Marina set up. As we were talking he motioned me over to the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://misfitwinery.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://misfitwinery.com/" target="_blank">Misfit Winery</a> booth, so we had to have a taste, buy a bottle, and have a chat with Stephanie and Micheal, the current proprietors of said Winery.</p>

<p>After that we caught a seminar from <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.chesapeakebaymagazine.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.chesapeakebaymagazine.com/" target="_blank">Chesapeake Bay Media</a> about cruising the Bay presented by John Stefancik.</p>

<p>We stopped by the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://apexmarineservice.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://apexmarineservice.com/" target="_blank">Apex Marine Services</a> booth where they had several <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://nannienergy.com/marine-engine/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://nannienergy.com/marine-engine/" target="_blank">Nanni Diesel</a> engines on display. They are a SeaKeeper and also specialize in generators and Caterpiller products. They are a full service shop for all of your boating needs and located in <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.herringtonharbour.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.herringtonharbour.com/" target="_blank">Herrington Harbor North</a>.</p>

<p>Finally, we sit down with Haydn to talk about all sorts of things ranging from Maryland Marina and 20 some odd years of being a member and boat owner, to Lazy Jack Schooners. Thanks to Haydn for being a supporter and friend of the podcast and for sitting down and Shooting the Breeze about sailing on a cold winters day!</p>

<p>Also, thanks to Josh Davidson of <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/anchorsoars/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.facebook.com/anchorsoars/" target="_blank">Anchors and Oars</a> for the assist in getting into the show.</p>

<p>Welcome to episode 196 of The Shooting The Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP) where we attend the Boaters Boat Show at <a href="https://newlhp.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://newlhp.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lighthouse Point Marina</a> in Baltimore, MD. I talked to 6 crew of various boats that were there. I would have probably spoken to more, but the rain started and then it was Happy Hour, and well&#8230; You know&#8230;.</p>

<p>It was a great time!</p>

<p>We had about 24 sailing ships come into port for the event, there was an appearance by <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://captainboomies.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://captainboomies.com/" target="_blank">Captain Boomies</a>, the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://funnyboatpodcast.com/podcast/ep-38-broker-with-the-beard-returns-from-fiji" data-type="URL" data-id="https://funnyboatpodcast.com/podcast/ep-38-broker-with-the-beard-returns-from-fiji" target="_blank">Broker with the Beard</a>, Stevie from <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://baconsails.com/meet-the-crew/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://baconsails.com/meet-the-crew/" target="_blank">Bacon Sails</a>, amongst others. Our friend from High School, Jason from <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/atlanticmarinedetail/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.facebook.com/atlanticmarinedetail/" target="_blank">Atlantic Marine Detail</a> stopped by and hung out.</p>

<p>We had a great Happy Hour, then dinner at Pussers Landing, which involved a Pain Killer or three.</p>

<p>Then we hung out a bit on the docks telling sailing stories and Tall Tales till the wee hours.</p>

<p>It was a fantastic weekend, in spite of the long motor to and from, and the rain, but I&#8217;m already looking forward to next year. Lighthouse Point Marina was a great host and many thanks to Bryant Gorrell for putting it all together!</p>

<p>In this episode, #195 of the Shooting the Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP), we talk again with Thad Van Gilder about his new business, <a href="https://www.sailboatparts.com/collections/tuckahoe-traditional-watercraft?page=8" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.sailboatparts.com/collections/tuckahoe-traditional-watercraft?page=8">Tuckahoe Traditional Watercraft, LLC</a>, which will be mostly a Bronze Boat Hardware business, with distribution through <a href="https://www.sailboatparts.com/collections/tuckahoe-traditional-watercraft?page=8" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.sailboatparts.com/collections/tuckahoe-traditional-watercraft?page=8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Anchors and Oars</a> in Grasonville, MD.</p>

<p>We talked with Thad about all things sailing back in February of 2025, but now he is back talking about his new side hustle, Forging and Casting bronze boat hardware and accessories.</p>

<p>We had a blast recording this one after dinner at <a href="https://springhousebeer.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://springhousebeer.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Springhouse Brewery</a> in Lancaster, PA. I learned a lot about traditional boat hardware and the process of Forging and Casting metals, which in central PA, is a long lasting tradition.</p>

<p>His exclusive distributor will be Anchors and Oars, in Grasonville, MD, which can be found at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.sailboatparts.com/collections/tuckahoe-traditional-watercraft?page=7&amp;phcursor=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJzayI6InBvc2l0aW9uIiwic3YiOjE0NywiZCI6ImIiLCJ1aWQiOjQyNTk3NzQyNzM5Nzc4LCJsIjoxNSwibyI6MCwiciI6IkNEUCIsInYiOjEsInAiOjd9.erM8xozmlV5jpT3aT8_ecNHR1WIVR8Xq_FyDRr3px8k&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawMKEqdleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHvNCo3hnmmG2hfNFH5DF-b4U7bAqawxsSp42ud2cZ7vHy_xjFKZTHoe3QSwY_aem_RcVjVSi3p4y3ybhnwGKkVw" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.sailboatparts.com/collections/tuckahoe-traditional-watercraft?page=7&amp;phcursor=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJzayI6InBvc2l0aW9uIiwic3YiOjE0NywiZCI6ImIiLCJ1aWQiOjQyNTk3NzQyNzM5Nzc4LCJsIjoxNSwibyI6MCwiciI6IkNEUCIsInYiOjEsInAiOjd9.erM8xozmlV5jpT3aT8_ecNHR1WIVR8Xq_FyDRr3px8k&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawMKEqdleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHvNCo3hnmmG2hfNFH5DF-b4U7bAqawxsSp42ud2cZ7vHy_xjFKZTHoe3QSwY_aem_RcVjVSi3p4y3ybhnwGKkVw" target="_blank">www.sailboatparts.com</a>.</p>

<p>Not only will he have builder plates, blocks, hangers and other sail, power, and row boat parts, he will have other nick knacks as well, such as drawer pulls and caulking irons.</p>

<p>I also talk about our recent guest spot on the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://funnyboatpodcast.com/podcast/ep-39-boaters-boat-show-boat-fest-baltimore-2025" data-type="URL" data-id="https://funnyboatpodcast.com/podcast/ep-39-boaters-boat-show-boat-fest-baltimore-2025" target="_blank">Funny Boat Podcast</a> with <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://captainboomies.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://captainboomies.com/" target="_blank">Captain Boomies</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/edthebrokerwiththebeard/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.facebook.com/edthebrokerwiththebeard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ed the Broker with the Beard</a>, speaking about the upcoming Boaters Boat show at <a href="https://oasisexperiences.com/boatfest/">Lighthouse Marina in Baltimore</a>, as part of their BoatFest. <p>Welcome to this episode of The Shooting The Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP), our guest is friend, supporter, and Patron of our podcast, Sailor Jack Andrys.</p>

<p>I first heard Jack when he was on <a href="https://www.medsailor.com/tag/jack-andrys/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.medsailor.com/tag/jack-andrys/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Sailing in the Mediterranean and beyond</a> podcast with Franz way back when. Jack and another friend of the show, Neil Fletcher, had both gone sailing in the Med with Franz and came on the several episodes to tell us all about it. When they both went out and bought boats and started cruising, they would come on and report back to all of us listeners about what they were getting into when they were &#8220;Out There.&#8221;</p>

<p>Jack and his son Reuben, were kind enough to sit down for lunch at Davis&#8217; Pub in Eastport on a recent Saturday. They are in town to get rigging work done on Jacks new boat, a Jeanneau 54DS, while Reuben has taken over command of their old boat, a Bavaria 44. For the time being they are buddy boating up from the Bahama&#8217;s, but soon enough, they may part ways. Plans are made in the sand a Low Tide, so what is to come may change. Jack may end up back in the Med, after 5 years in the Caribbean, while Reuben needs to prove he can effectively afford to run Vesna, the Bavaria 44, maybe back in the Bahama&#8217;s.</p>

<p>Part of our conversation surrounds the starting of <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.noforeignland.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.noforeignland.com/" target="_blank">noforeignland.com</a> and the new App to go along with it. Consider Jack an ambassador for the website and the new App, which is a great tool for globetrotting cruisers around the world.</p>

<p>Jack introduced me to his family and gave me a quick tour of the new boat before we headed out for lunch, and I gave him the 5 cent tour along with some recommendations for places to check out in Annapolis while they were there. The plan is to put the boats up in Cape Charles for a few weeks and getting some more work done on the boats before deciding which way the winds are blowing.</p>

<p>Hopefully we will catch up with Jack again someday somewhere out in the world, possibly a boat show or two!</p>

<p>I also tackle another safety concern I recently experienced in the intro, breaking down what can happen at anchor when you think everything is just hunky dory, and it all goes sideways.</p>

<p>You can listen to <a href="https://traffic.libsyn.com/shootingthebreezesailing/Shooting_E0194.mp3" data-type="URL" data-id="https://traffic.libsyn.com/shootingthebreezesailing/Shooting_E0194.mp3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Episode 194 of the STBSP, by right clicking and downloading here</a>,</p>

<p>Welcome to this episode of the Shooting The Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP) episdode number 193, where we breakdown the breakdown, and debrief an incident that happened earlier this spring in the lower Chesapeake Bay when a mid 70&#8217;s era <a href="https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/princess-36-allied/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/princess-36-allied/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Allied Princess</a> was dismasted.</p>

<p>I wrangled up a couple of other Sailing Podcasters, our friends Scott Titus of the <a href="https://stmbpodcast.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://stmbpodcast.com/">Splice the Main Brace Podcast</a>, and Chris Smith of the <a href="https://thebonnieboat.wordpress.com/podcast/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://thebonnieboat.wordpress.com/podcast/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bonnie Boat Podcast</a>, who were out with the owner of the boat on a find afternoon regatta back in May, when something popped, and next thing you know, the top of the mast was swinging freely from it&#8217;s rigging.</p>

<p>We discuss how they got into that situation, some of the safety concerns that come up when you find yourself in a situation such as that, what kind of stress you encounter, and the steps you take to protect your crew and vessel, and how they were able to get the boat docked and taken care of in fairly short order.</p>

<p>We also speak about Scotts involvement in a new <a href="https://www.sailbeyondcancer.org/sbc-va-chapter" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.sailbeyondcancer.org/sbc-va-chapter" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sailing Beyond Cancer</a> chapter located in the Gloucester, Virginia area. Someday we will do an entire episode surrounding that charity and all the good work they do up and down the east coast.</p>
