<p>I caught up with them via a Film they did where they went on a Tall Ship <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://skottland-whisky-segling.se/whisky-and-hebrides/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://skottland-whisky-segling.se/whisky-and-hebrides/" target="_blank">Sailing Whisky tour</a> in Scotland, aboard a rehabbed Herring boat named the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.flying-dutchman.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.flying-dutchman.com/" target="_blank">Flying Dutchman</a>. It was more than just a YouTube video, it was a <strong>Film</strong>! Clocking in at an hour and 20 minutes, it was just what I look for in a Travel Experience. This got me hooked, so I started poking around and found their video series aboard another tall ship, the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://bessie-ellen.com/" target="_blank">Bessie Ellen</a>.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" src="https://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_06-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1716" width="204" height="135" srcset="http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_06-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_06-300x200.jpg 300w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_06-768x512.jpg 768w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_06-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_06-24x16.jpg 24w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_06-36x24.jpg 36w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_06-48x32.jpg 48w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_06.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px" /><figcaption>Whisky Tour!</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The Bessie Ellen is a rehabbed trading vessel from 1904 that had plied the waters of the UK for decades, before <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://venturesailholidays.com/ship/bessie-ellen/nikki-alford/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://venturesailholidays.com/ship/bessie-ellen/nikki-alford/" target="_blank">Captain Nikki Alford</a> found her and brought her back to life. For the past 20 odd years, Captain Nikki has chartered voyages in these waters, and in 2024 voyaged around the UK in celebration of Bessie Ellen&#8217;s 120th anniversary. Kim and Del went along for the ride, and is now in the middle of putting out that video series on YouTube.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" src="https://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_07-1024x683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1717" width="213" height="141" srcset="http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_07-1024x683.jpg 1024w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_07-300x200.jpg 300w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_07-768x512.jpg 768w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_07-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_07-24x16.jpg 24w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_07-36x24.jpg 36w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_07-48x32.jpg 48w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_07.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px" /><figcaption>Captain Nikki Alford of the Bessie Ellen</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>They have officially gotten bitten by the Sailing Bug, having gone to the Caribbean on another Tall Ship, as well as having plans to do more sailing as part of their adventures in the future.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" src="https://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_04-1024x628.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1719" width="254" height="155" srcset="http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_04-1024x628.jpg 1024w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_04-300x184.jpg 300w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_04-768x471.jpg 768w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_04-1536x942.jpg 1536w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_04-24x15.jpg 24w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_04-36x22.jpg 36w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_04-48x29.jpg 48w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/KimandDelHogg_04.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px" /><figcaption>Kim enjoys a Hot Beverage in the Chilly Weather!</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Welcome to Episode 203 of The Shooting the Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP) and our guests Herbie and Maddie of The Rigging Doctor!</p>

<p>Having cruised the Atlantic Basin for 5 years, Herbie and Maddie came home a few years ago to the Baltimore area, settled in and began working on an Alberg 30 named Windpuff.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" src="https://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_20260509_1152131-768x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1709" width="247" height="329" srcset="http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_20260509_1152131-768x1024.jpg 768w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_20260509_1152131-225x300.jpg 225w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_20260509_1152131-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_20260509_1152131-18x24.jpg 18w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_20260509_1152131-27x36.jpg 27w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_20260509_1152131-36x48.jpg 36w, http://theescapepods.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/IMG_20260509_1152131.jpg 1512w" sizes="(max-width: 247px) 100vw, 247px" /><figcaption>Wisdom</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Having documented cruising onboard Wisdom on YouTube, they were one of the original cruisers with Electric propulsion and synthetic rigging. Now passing the 11 year mark with the rigging and keeping tabs on the technology required to efficiently employ enough solar, they are a wealth of knowledge and experience, so much so that Herbie has written a new book all about Rigging called <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.amazon.com/Rigging-Handbook-Comprehensive-Sailboat-Maintenance/dp/1493086006" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.amazon.com/Rigging-Handbook-Comprehensive-Sailboat-Maintenance/dp/1493086006" target="_blank">The Rigging Handbook</a>.</p>

<p>During the intro I talk about attending the Bacon Sails start of the season sale, checking out the folks from <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://chesss.clubexpress.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://chesss.clubexpress.com/" target="_blank">Chesss (Chesapeake Shorthanded Sailing</a>), Custom Marine Canvas &amp; Upholstery <a href="https://thenauticaltailor.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://thenauticaltailor.com/">TheNauticalTailor.com</a>, and <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.akzonobel.com/en" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.akzonobel.com/en" target="_blank">AzkoNobel</a> (SeaHawk and Awlgrip.)</p>

<p>I also was able to visit with Chris and Cherie from <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.technomadia.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.technomadia.com/" target="_blank">Technomadia</a> aboard &#8220;Y-Not&#8221; a powerboat at McDaniel Yacht Basin in North East, MD, on a Loop voyage that has so far taken 9 years, and will take many more as they slowly move ahead all while taking the time to really experience the places they visit.</p>

<p>This episode was a fun one to experience and put together. I had been seeing various Sea Shanty content pop up, starting with a <a href="https://www.profsandpints.com/baltimore" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.profsandpints.com/baltimore" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Profs and Pints</a> event in Baltimore, a Shanty night at my buddies club <a href="https://www.phantompower.net" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.phantompower.net" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Phantom Power</a> in Millersville, pa and figured I could marry them up into an episode.</p>

<p><a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://gwst.umbc.edu/meet-the-adjuncts/jessica-floyd/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://gwst.umbc.edu/meet-the-adjuncts/jessica-floyd/" target="_blank">Dr. Jessica Floyd</a> works at CCBC, the same campus my wife runs the college book store at currently and she got her doctorate studying various things including English Pornographic Poetry and ending up on taking the same angle to study Sea Chanties. (Spelled with a C, for Doctor Floyds preferred spelling.)</p>

<p>We think of Sea Chanties as drinking fun songs along the lines of The Dropkick Murphys and such, but in an academic sense, a Sea Chanty is a very specific Nautical work song practiced aboard Merchant ships plying the Atlantic and Caribbean during the age of sail.</p>

<p>Dr. Jesssica is holding a Profs and Pints event on Monday, March 23rd, 2026 at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.sospickleball.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.sospickleball.com/" target="_blank">SOS pickleball</a>, 409 S. Spring St. in Baltimore, at 6pm. I plan on being there, you should as well!</p>

<p>In conjunction with that event, my buddy Gregg booked in a Shanty night at his club in Millersville, PA last Thursday featuring the <a href="https://thesusquehannashantymen.bandcamp.com/album/way-up-river" data-type="URL" data-id="https://thesusquehannashantymen.bandcamp.com/album/way-up-river" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Susquehanna Shantymen</a>, a local shanty band, and <a href="https://mydruthers.bandcamp.com/album/coming-up-3s" data-type="URL" data-id="https://mydruthers.bandcamp.com/album/coming-up-3s" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">My Druthers,</a> a shanty band from Connecticut.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve interspersed some songs from each as well as at the end, they all gathered on stage to do Leave Her Johnny. I also put in The Ogham Stones version of the <a href="http://realmckenzies.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="http://realmckenzies.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Real Mckenzies</a> &#8220;Mainland,&#8221; a favorite of mine. We saw them on Sunday after all of this for St. Paddys day weekend.</p>

<p>Dr. Jessica has two books, one is out already and the other is coming out in May of 2026.</p>

<p>Welcome to this episode of the Shooting the Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP), episode 201.</p>

<p>This episode we weather the freezing cold and wind, head inside, and check out the Chesapeake Bay Boat Show up in Timonium, MD and the Maryland State Fairgrounds.</p>

<p>It ostensibly is a power boat show, with lots of skiffs, center consoles, fishing boats and lots of lifestyle vendors.</p>

<p>I was interested in the fishing center and talking with a charter captain out of Ocean City, MD, but they didn&#8217;t want to be on the mic. They suggested another captain, but they were away from the stand.</p>

<p>I was able to talk with Cindy Freland, a local author and publisher of childrens books specifically tailored to the Chesapeake Bay Area with her &#8220;Chesapeake Bay Adventures Book Series&#8221; over at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://cbaykidsbooks.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://cbaykidsbooks.com/" target="_blank">cbaykidsbooks.com</a>. Her series features the wildlife apparent in the Chesapeake Bay area, with everything from Oysters to Mermaids! She also helps folks self publish their stories by way of a book and seminars she hosts locally.</p>

<p>I stumbled into friend of the Podcast Haydn Foy at a booth the Maryland Marina set up. As we were talking he motioned me over to the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://misfitwinery.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://misfitwinery.com/" target="_blank">Misfit Winery</a> booth, so we had to have a taste, buy a bottle, and have a chat with Stephanie and Micheal, the current proprietors of said Winery.</p>

<p>After that we caught a seminar from <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.chesapeakebaymagazine.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.chesapeakebaymagazine.com/" target="_blank">Chesapeake Bay Media</a> about cruising the Bay presented by John Stefancik.</p>

<p>We stopped by the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://apexmarineservice.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://apexmarineservice.com/" target="_blank">Apex Marine Services</a> booth where they had several <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://nannienergy.com/marine-engine/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://nannienergy.com/marine-engine/" target="_blank">Nanni Diesel</a> engines on display. They are a SeaKeeper and also specialize in generators and Caterpiller products. They are a full service shop for all of your boating needs and located in <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.herringtonharbour.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.herringtonharbour.com/" target="_blank">Herrington Harbor North</a>.</p>

<p>Finally, we sit down with Haydn to talk about all sorts of things ranging from Maryland Marina and 20 some odd years of being a member and boat owner, to Lazy Jack Schooners. Thanks to Haydn for being a supporter and friend of the podcast and for sitting down and Shooting the Breeze about sailing on a cold winters day!</p>

<p>Also, thanks to Josh Davidson of <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/anchorsoars/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.facebook.com/anchorsoars/" target="_blank">Anchors and Oars</a> for the assist in getting into the show.</p>

<p>Erics got a vast boating history and experience with the trades and entrepreneurship with his various endeavors over the years, and enjoys living aboard his 42ft sailboat in the Annapolis area during the sailing season, zipping around in his center console, and traveling the world installing systems across the globe in the offseason.</p>

<p>Welcome to episode 196 of The Shooting The Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP) where we attend the Boaters Boat Show at <a href="https://newlhp.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://newlhp.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lighthouse Point Marina</a> in Baltimore, MD. I talked to 6 crew of various boats that were there. I would have probably spoken to more, but the rain started and then it was Happy Hour, and well&#8230; You know&#8230;.</p>

<p>It was a great time!</p>

<p>We had about 24 sailing ships come into port for the event, there was an appearance by <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://captainboomies.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://captainboomies.com/" target="_blank">Captain Boomies</a>, the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://funnyboatpodcast.com/podcast/ep-38-broker-with-the-beard-returns-from-fiji" data-type="URL" data-id="https://funnyboatpodcast.com/podcast/ep-38-broker-with-the-beard-returns-from-fiji" target="_blank">Broker with the Beard</a>, Stevie from <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://baconsails.com/meet-the-crew/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://baconsails.com/meet-the-crew/" target="_blank">Bacon Sails</a>, amongst others. Our friend from High School, Jason from <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.facebook.com/atlanticmarinedetail/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.facebook.com/atlanticmarinedetail/" target="_blank">Atlantic Marine Detail</a> stopped by and hung out.</p>

<p>We had a great Happy Hour, then dinner at Pussers Landing, which involved a Pain Killer or three.</p>

<p>Then we hung out a bit on the docks telling sailing stories and Tall Tales till the wee hours.</p>

<p>It was a fantastic weekend, in spite of the long motor to and from, and the rain, but I&#8217;m already looking forward to next year. Lighthouse Point Marina was a great host and many thanks to Bryant Gorrell for putting it all together!</p>

<p>In this episode, #195 of the Shooting the Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP), we talk again with Thad Van Gilder about his new business, <a href="https://www.sailboatparts.com/collections/tuckahoe-traditional-watercraft?page=8" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.sailboatparts.com/collections/tuckahoe-traditional-watercraft?page=8">Tuckahoe Traditional Watercraft, LLC</a>, which will be mostly a Bronze Boat Hardware business, with distribution through <a href="https://www.sailboatparts.com/collections/tuckahoe-traditional-watercraft?page=8" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.sailboatparts.com/collections/tuckahoe-traditional-watercraft?page=8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Anchors and Oars</a> in Grasonville, MD.</p>

<p>We talked with Thad about all things sailing back in February of 2025, but now he is back talking about his new side hustle, Forging and Casting bronze boat hardware and accessories.</p>

<p>We had a blast recording this one after dinner at <a href="https://springhousebeer.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://springhousebeer.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Springhouse Brewery</a> in Lancaster, PA. I learned a lot about traditional boat hardware and the process of Forging and Casting metals, which in central PA, is a long lasting tradition.</p>

<p>His exclusive distributor will be Anchors and Oars, in Grasonville, MD, which can be found at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.sailboatparts.com/collections/tuckahoe-traditional-watercraft?page=7&amp;phcursor=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJzayI6InBvc2l0aW9uIiwic3YiOjE0NywiZCI6ImIiLCJ1aWQiOjQyNTk3NzQyNzM5Nzc4LCJsIjoxNSwibyI6MCwiciI6IkNEUCIsInYiOjEsInAiOjd9.erM8xozmlV5jpT3aT8_ecNHR1WIVR8Xq_FyDRr3px8k&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawMKEqdleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHvNCo3hnmmG2hfNFH5DF-b4U7bAqawxsSp42ud2cZ7vHy_xjFKZTHoe3QSwY_aem_RcVjVSi3p4y3ybhnwGKkVw" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.sailboatparts.com/collections/tuckahoe-traditional-watercraft?page=7&amp;phcursor=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJzayI6InBvc2l0aW9uIiwic3YiOjE0NywiZCI6ImIiLCJ1aWQiOjQyNTk3NzQyNzM5Nzc4LCJsIjoxNSwibyI6MCwiciI6IkNEUCIsInYiOjEsInAiOjd9.erM8xozmlV5jpT3aT8_ecNHR1WIVR8Xq_FyDRr3px8k&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawMKEqdleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHvNCo3hnmmG2hfNFH5DF-b4U7bAqawxsSp42ud2cZ7vHy_xjFKZTHoe3QSwY_aem_RcVjVSi3p4y3ybhnwGKkVw" target="_blank">www.sailboatparts.com</a>.</p>

<p>Not only will he have builder plates, blocks, hangers and other sail, power, and row boat parts, he will have other nick knacks as well, such as drawer pulls and caulking irons.</p>

<p>I also talk about our recent guest spot on the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://funnyboatpodcast.com/podcast/ep-39-boaters-boat-show-boat-fest-baltimore-2025" data-type="URL" data-id="https://funnyboatpodcast.com/podcast/ep-39-boaters-boat-show-boat-fest-baltimore-2025" target="_blank">Funny Boat Podcast</a> with <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://captainboomies.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://captainboomies.com/" target="_blank">Captain Boomies</a> and <a href="https://www.facebook.com/edthebrokerwiththebeard/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.facebook.com/edthebrokerwiththebeard/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Ed the Broker with the Beard</a>, speaking about the upcoming Boaters Boat show at <a href="https://oasisexperiences.com/boatfest/">Lighthouse Marina in Baltimore</a>, as part of their BoatFest. We hung out at the new <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://pusserslanding.com/" data-type="URL" data-id="https://pusserslanding.com/" target="_blank">Pussers Landing</a> and had a ball! I plan on being there September 6th, so see you there!</p>
