I enjoy taking pictures of all kinds of domesticated animals: dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, and birds just to name a few, over the past decade and a half. I find them to be the easiest subjects to photograph, so there's no possible way that you can mess it up. I would like to share a few of my favorite pics with everyone.

circa 2010's

1} This is my very lovely and late cat Holly, who we unfortunately had to put down during the beginning of that nasty old panicky pandemic. I don't quite remember the specific year that I had taken this pic, other than it was during the 2010s and I had posted it previously on this particular blog. This particular pic is the first thing that you see when you visit my main blog I Have Stories!, as I wanted to created a lasting tribute to my favorite pet. Additionally, the spot you see her standing is the spot that her lovely wooden urn now occupies as the window sill was her favorite spot.

2} This is one of the better group photos of our two Chihuahuas Oreo and Tina, along with the late Lucky, a mixed breed of something and something. While the former are still going somewhat strong in their mid-teens, Lucky sadly passed away a couple of years ago from a combo of old age and unknown medical issues. Let me tell you, this dog was absolutely fearless. For whatever reason known to him, he couldn't walk down the three steps from the deck to the ground, he had to absolutely launch himself from deck to the ground, often partially face-planting the concrete tiles. No matter how many times we would (gently) chastise him, it would go in one ear straight out the other.

3} Our lovely chihuahuas make an appearance once again, this time in their Halloween sweaters/costume, with Oreo in his lovely Halloween sweater and Tina masquerading as a very lovely bumblebee. Sometimes when you start aging gracefully, you're not as grumpy when presented with a sweater or a costume for your person.

4} Once again our lovely chihuahuas make an appearance, this time while they're frolicking around the backyard, which was cleared out of any other "interlopers" by Oreo, who simply couldn't stand the thought of any birds, rabbits or squirrels having the temerity to actually visit the backyard to like, you know, chill out. Now in his ye olden age, he's content to bark at the neighbor's dog, who is about 10x his size through the fence. This dog has absolutely no fear whatsoever.

5} I like to finish up this brief trip down domesticated wildlife memory lane with a pic of my daughter's ferret Bubbles. She's been featured periodically in a few my now dormant blog, but while she was alive, she was a blast to have around the house. The photo above was one of the rare times she was brought outside, because we really didn't have properly sized collar or harness to walk her in. She was quite the curious little animal and she will be sadly missed.

I've taken some very unusual holiday pictures over the years during my various strolls around my immediate neighborhood, as well as my own house. Today's post features some of the more abnormal pics that had struck my fancy during my leisurely walks around this wonderful town.

{9/24/24}

1} People put up very strange decorations in the month leading up to Halloween. For example, this lovely spider couldn't decide if they were climbing up to the waterspout, or down to the ground to chill out on the brownish-green grass with his pumpkin friend.

2} My muse decided that she had better things to do than to watch over me 24/7/365, because you know, the Hawaiian surf is at an all time high and sun is just sending out some sensuous vibes....anyways, this is my new watch dog...I mean, my new watch skeleton, Bonesy McBones. He ain't got a brain, but he's looking to get back into politics, soo...

3} Saw this dude waiting for either Casey Jones's locomotive or an auto traveling down the road to nowhere. In any event, he was basically chillin' to the sunny vibes of the neighborhood, where maybe, just maybe, this particular parade will entertain him in the meanwhile.

4} Not too sure what the main idea was in giving this gnarly looking tree the odd Pickachu face, but here we are. To be honest, I don't really remember what neighborhood I was trudging through when his gnarliness got hold of my short attention span, so there you go. Now that I think about it, the face does remind me of SpongeBob in an odd way. Kind of. A little. Maybe.

5} "Come closer my little pretty and let me tell you a story about someone who actually said 'okay' when the operator said, 'I want to talk to you about extending your car warranty.' His empty wallet was never the same. BWHAHAHAHAHAHAH!"

6} When a very large pumpkinhead skeleton says, 'respect my authority!', you can bet your sweet bippy that I will respect his authority. Certainly more than Kyle's or Chief Wiggins's authority.

{7/31/2024}

7} I'm including this picture at the end as another example of the Completion Backward Principle, in that retailers want to get a super early jump on the next holiday. As you can tell by the date of the picture, my local Dollar Tree store had Halloweenie schtuff out and on display more than three months prior to the official holiday. Trust me when I say that I have more photographic examples of starting the race three steps from the finish line when it comes to holidays.

I certainly hope that this small traipse through the holiday of pre All Saints Day gave you a small chuckle or two. Have a fantastic week and remember, the world indeed always revolves around you.

We Have Wildlife On Cedar Mountain

Hello to one and all, and after an eight year long hiatus/vacation, we are back to post some fresh content for you to peruse and enjoy. A brief backstory before we get into the meat of the post: since my last post in 2016, I spent those years upping my exercise routine by walking at least 2 3/4 miles per day {minimum 6k steps} per day. I've also taken quite a few pics, just not at the rate during 2010-16. I hope you enjoy the latest version of my picture blog.

We have an abundance of wildlife on our little suburban mountain: some fox, some wild rabbit and some deer, predominately female, with the occasional sighting of a buck and fawns. Today's post will concentrate on our resident deer population.

August 2023 {1}

1} This pic was the best of a mediocre bunch showing a small herd (about 6) of deer grazing in someone's backyard pool area. They were probably making their way from the stream that ran behind the house back to the source up on the mountain top and decided to stop for a snack. I took this pic from the street, as the deer were on private property and I was at maximum zoom.

July 2024 {2}

2} For roughly five hours, we had a fawn/doe just chilling in the shade of our backyard fence, as it was incredibly hot that day (about mid 90's and humid). The deer have, sadly enough, easy access to our backyard, as the fence surrounding our yard is about three feet in height. By the time I had come back home from my walk, the fawn had finished its R&R and returned back to the mountain.

July 2024 {3}

3} This was taken a few days earlier than the previous one, and apparently this doe had decided that I was a safe human, so she allowed me to take three photos from about twenty feet away in the street. In the other two, she is nibbling on the tree ivy before eventually strolling across the street back into the mountain.

I should make everyone aware that Cedar Mountain is basically on the other side of the street that my house borders on. It's a very popular hiking/walking area, although the storms from 2024 have done a bit of interior trail damage.

July 2024 {4}

4} This particular shot was the fawn being kind enough to allow me to take a few photos and a video after I had come to within fifteen feet of walking directly into them. I was finishing one of my walks down the side street and really groovin' to the music on my headphones. Something made me look up and viola!, we were eye to eye, so to speak. Again, she was crossing the street at the bridge to the mountain.

Overall I have managed to come within fifteen-to-twenty feet of deer twice during my walks, purely by accident. I get so engrossed in what I'm listening to that I end up seeing without really seeing what's ahead of me.

June 2024 {5}

5} For our last pic, we have this nifty one taken, as you can see, from the inside of my house. We have our bird feeder perfectly located so that the birds, squirrels and chipmunks have easy access to the birdseed. This is about as close I've gotten to seeing a doe since taking a series of pics of a doe grazing outside a group home about year ago .

I sincerely hope you enjoyed this brief sampling of the deer population that makes itself known in our neighborhoods from time to time. Have a fantastic and relaxing week.

I's Can Fall Off A Bike Too!

First off, welcome to Pictures For Smarties, formerly Shooting Suburbia. Believe it or not, the name change was done on a whim, with the whim being the weekly post over at Father Nature's Corner. I originally decided to post these pics over there, so I wrote a snarky comment about it. I liked it so much that I decided right there and then to change the title of my picture blog.

Thus, we start at the beginning, specifically, the 1st bike outing of the season, which took place on 5/14:

Actually, this pic wasn't part of the bike ride. I was out running some errands in my car and I thought it would be a good idea to take the camera along. Sadly, this was the only pic I during the drive.

Mill Pond Park: The Canadian Geese Armada was out in full force that Saturday, styling and profiling for the masses, as well as dropping some serious fertilizer for the masses as well. Oh, the human masses were out in full force that day, mostly doing the fishing thing. So we actually dismounted a couple of times to walk our bike past the peoples.

The geese pics are pretty much self explanatory. I played around with the zoom lens feature and considering I was anywhere from fifty to three hundred feet away from them, I think they came out purty good.

For those of you who may have been following me for a short time, it's an annual tradition of mine to have at least one (sometimes two) bike accidents every year, and 2016 was no exception. Roughly a half hour prior to taking this pics, I was on my way to the post office, when I came to a premature stop at the crossing light. Seems that my left shoelace, which I forgot to quadruple knot for bike riding, wrapped itself around my bike pedal.

Skipping to the end, we scrapped our knee and had a strange encounter with a high skool student. Our local high skool tennis team was doing a carwash fundraiser that day, and as this student was walking from one end of the block to the other, he passed by the wreckage of me and the bike and asked quite sincerely, "Hey mister! Wanna get your bike washed?"

Nice to know that chutzpah exists with the younger generation.

Doggies!

Can you believe it? Two posts in the month of July on this here blog. I's must be getting ill.

Today's post will feature another batch of photos taken this past July 4th weekend, and as the title suggests, it will feature doggies, specifically the one living here at the house.

The first two are of my mother's/daughter's nutty little chiuahauhau Oreo. Oreo has done an incredibly remarkable job of purging the entire backyard of all possible living creatures.

Birds? gone. Squirrels? ditto. Ducks? beyond a shadow of doubt. Rabbit? Getting there.

The next two are of my mother's dog Lucky. Lucky is alder than dirt (about 18 or so), can't see and suffers from seriously short term memory loss.

As in, I can walk out the door and return fifteen seconds later to be barked at like it was my first time entering the house. In perpetuity.

As you can see, he is just chillin' in the sun.

I was able to get a bunch of actions shots of Oreo from where I was (zoom lens on the camera) in the yard. In these two, you can see he was starting to go to town with scratching his back on the lawn.

Butterflies?

Howdy do and welcome fellow suburbanites to my picture blog! I thought for next few months, it would be a good idea to dust out the bunnies and the cobwebs and bring this niche blog back out amongst the living.

Today's fun filled post is about butterflies, specifically, Monarch Butterflies. From I understand, there has been a decline of the Monarch butterfly population in the past few years, and Monarch Watch is a good place to learn how you can help stop the decline.

My town is doing it's part to help with the decline, as I discovered over the July 4th holiday weekened when I went bike riding. I took well over three dozen photos that day, and for today's post, I would like to present a little montage of that Monarch butterfly waystation.

And I decided to get a close up so that you could read what is written on the sign.

The rest of the shots are of the various flower beds that they planted and developed. I will tell you that they did a very good job of reclaiming this land next to the public library and creating a little bit of an open space out of what used to be a couple of houses.

I did not see any butterflies that day, but I did see a few moths. All of these pics were taken on either end of the flowerbeds, as I didn't feel comfortable tying to walk between them. In all of them you can see that they planted all kinds of flowers and other assorted fauna, and in the bottom, you can see a partial pallet of soil and fertilizer for them.

A Walk Through The Park

Ola!

I thought I would dust off this blog and give everyone a treat today. Why? Because about a month ago, I received a b'day present of a slightly used digital video camera. A camera that is 1000 times better than the cheapy Colby camera that I had used for the past few years.

Anyways, today's pictorial will feature pics taken on a picnic I took with the wife on June 20th at Mill Pond Park. Enjoy!

1) This is similar to one that I took a couple of years ago, in which I was laying on my back and looking up. Strangely enough, my wife did ask what I was doing, and strangely enough, I answered.

2} A very distant shot of ducks, even though I used the zoom feature on the camera. As you can see by the algae, it's been wickedly hot and dry this year so far.

3} With this shot, I was able to get much closer to the pond (a bench for people to watch and..ahem...feed the geese from was nearby) and thus make better use of the zoom feature.

4} Another shot of the geese from the same area.

5} This was taken from the bridge that crosses the waterfall, which was bone dry this particular day. My wife thinks that one of the ducks in this pic used to visit our little pond back in the day before the dogs chased them out.

6} Another duck sunbathing on the rocks. The sad part is that you can usually see these rocks when there has been a distinct lack of rain in the area for an extended period of time.

7} Still more ducks. Ducks at the pond are just about the easiest animals to take pictures of.

8} Yup, you guessed it, more ducks. We have a large population of two types of feathered friends: ducks and Canadian geese.

9} And still yet more ducks taking their hourly bath at the edge of the waterfall.

10} This was taken with a zoom as I wanted to get a shot of the duck swimming inside the water fountain.

11} The water fountain, which was donated by the Newington Garden Club back in the late 70's. There are two of them, one at the northern and the other at the southern end of the pond. They only come out for play when there's been a distinct lack of rain in the area for an extended period of time, thus giving Mother Nature a helping hand in maintaining the minimum water levels.

Hiking On Cedar Mountain 2

Continuing on a theme, here is part 2 of my leisure weekend hike up Cedar Mountain.

On this part of the hike I decided to explore a bit of the ridge. Photo's 2 and 3 were taken from a rocky outcrop that gave me the willies while I was hiking up (diagonally) and while I was hiking down (also diagonally, which was very dangerous). In the remaining pics, you can see worn out paths that although were great for walking on, did provide a few places along the way for me to sit and proverbially smell the flowers, or in the case, the trees and the birds. You can also that autumn is indeed taking place on Cedar Mountain.

And while the grade was roughly 7% or more in some places, the downward trek on those paths made it feel like I was walking down a slightly steep hill. So overall to this point, the hike was going very well.

Hiking On Cedar Mountain

Recently I went for a hike up Cedar Mountain and took roughly 20 pics and one video while spending an hour tramping around the mountain. I thought now would be a good time as any to resurrect this blog and share one of my favorite places to get lost within myself. So without further ado, here is Cedar Mountain.

These pics were taken within the first fifteen minutes of my hike. The first one shows the entrance to Cedar Mountain, which located directly across from the end of my street. The remaining six were taken at various points while I was hiking up the initial 8-9% incline (it eventually grew to about a 11% or so incline the further up I went), either facing towards the street or off to my right as I faced the mountain.

Even though the temps were in the hi 60's/lo 70's outside, once I got about ten feet inside the mountain the temp dropped roughly five degrees. The higher I went the chillier it got as even though the sun poked its head through (as you can see in some of those pics), the ratio of shade to sun was about 4 to 1 in favor of the shade.

As you can see, autumn hasn't quite taken hold in the mountain yet, but in the coming weeks, maybe it has.

Alive Is The Neighborhood 3

Yeah, it's time for another photo montage, but this time, I though I would be extremely different by throwing a few captions in for everyone to read.

Background: I was outside desperately trying to get some writing done, when I decided to take break by shooting a few (well, about two dozen) pictures. The first 17 you saw in two previous posts, and the remaining six are here (one was a no-go).

Pic #1 features, as you can plainly see, flags waving in the breeze. We have about a half dozen flags lining this side of the driveway and not only are they purty, but they double as line guide for my brother in law (his now temporarily deceased car is what you see in the pic).

The reason why I was able to get this and the other bird shots was that I had chair parked directly under the tree in the front yard, thus making it super simple for me to get this nifty shot. Sorry, don't know what kind of bird this is.

One of my better self-portraits. Yes, I really do look this on the weekend, and as you can see, I have the funkiest salt-and-pepper mustache east of the Mississippi. And yes, I started growing it even longer as I'm trying to get it to hand down freestyle off my face.

Another bird, or the same bird. Not completely sure what's what or who's who.

While I wasn't pining for the fjords, I was laying on the ground pointing my cheesy little camera skywards. Not once....

Alive Is The Neighborhood

Howdy!

Time to blow off the dust bunnies and show another part of my neighborhood for all you good peeps to peruse and abuse. The majority of the pics that you will see in the coming weeks were taken while I was doing my Saturday morning errands and/or Sunday afternoon walks.

Today's post will feature trees. These particular trees were shot while doing my Saturday morning errands. Pics 1 thru 4 were taken in my neighborhood and the main drag for my neighborhod; pics 5 & 6 were taken in the center, while the remaining two were taken on the way home.

Howdy do folks!

Since the weather has gotten a bit warmer (thankfully) as of late, I was inspired to whip my handy dandy cheapo digital/video camera the other day. I took almost one dozen shots and I thought I would dust off this blog and share them with you.

All of the shots were taken either at my house or on the street next to Cedar Mountain (hence the tag, The Neighborhood) and all of them will be sans captions, since I would rather let you discover what the topic of choice is for each shot. There is no wrong interpertation here, so whatever you can come up with is perfectly acceptable.

I hope you enjoy this little slice of spring fever at the mountain.

Storm Nemo!!!

As most of you know, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island got their buttocks spanked until they were candy apple red this past weekend from the devil's spawn of the Blizzard of 1978.

For ha-ha's, I thought I would do an experiment by shooting before and after video's of my front yard and neighborhood. The video's that you're about to see should give you a sample on how badly Connecticut got bitch slapped from Storm Nemo. The first one was shot about 9a Friday morning, with the second being shot some 24 hours later on Saturday.

To put the second video in perspective, our esteemed Guv'nor closed the state to traveling around midnight on Friday, state DOT plows were actually pulled because they couldn't keep up with the snow, and late Saturday morning, a town plow that had chains on almost got stuck while plowing our street.

First, before Storm Nemo buried its butt ugly tentacles.

Autumn Near Cedar Mountain 2012 (4)

After a small, yet not entirely necessary hiatus (read: too freakin' lazy to create a post), we come now to the end of this picture series (betcha thinkin' that I was ending this blog, right? right?). I'm not sure when the next series of pics or video will be posted here, if only for the main reason of not having anything on tap or stashed away on the trusty ol' flashy drive.

So without further ado, here is the fourth and final part of "Autumn Near Cedar Mountain".

Trees! Lots of trees! Seriously though, these trees were seriously compromised last winter by Storm Alfred and this fall by Tropical Storm/Hurricane (depending on where you was) Sandy. But, we can definitely trip down memory lane by looking at this pic with awe about the ability of Mother and Father Nature to do good.

I was sitting on what passes for a bridge on this road. Seriously. We have two (count 'em) bridges on this street. I suppose back in the day, oh when gas was 55 cents a gallon, these bridges were useful in bridging the now tiny/infinitesimal streams that flowed down the mountain. Anyways, I decided to take a long exposure of the trees near the bridge, and as you can see, I got a backyard or two in the shot as well.

This is Sienna. Sienna belongs to John, the family friend/serious computer geek who lives in the suburban section of Hartford and comes up here daily to walk her around the mountain all year round. John is also heavily into the concept of "open space" in Newington and is a member of the organization called Save Cedar Mountain, which is devoted to the preservation of Cedar Mountain from developers. Halloweenie!!! This display was created by the residents of one of the oldest group homes that I know here in Newington. I say oldest as this sucker was around when I was my younger nephew's age some 43 years ago. Anyways, every year they put up some kind of display for a holiday, and this year, they chose to do Halloween.

And finally, we end our journey at the same place where we started it: home. In this case, the front sidewalk gave us the best viewpoint in which to shoot this lovely picture. As Fred Rogers would often say:

I decided to point the camera upwards as it seemed like I was walking through a small canopy-style tunnel that day. It's pretty freaky, albeit in a good way, how the sun is poking it's head through the trees.

This was another one of those long-tern exposure photographs, as you can tell by the blurriness on the top. Anywho, this was another example of how Mother & Father Nature has turned this particular part of Mountain Road into a leafy tunnel, complete with the proverbial light at the far end, of which you can see the bridge of Cedar Street crossing over the lower end of Mountain Road near the regional center.

Basically another random shot of the mountain. Thought it looked pretty cool and inviting, so why not immortalize it?

I took this one while taking a ten minute breather sitting on a small bridge wall that crossed a now non-existent stream. Again I experimented with a long tern exposure and I think it came out pretty good this time.

Part 2.

This one is a reoccuring theme, or rather, a reoccuring standy. This is looking west down Knollwood Road on the right side of the road.

Same street, only taken from the left side and in the shade.

I walked about one hundred feet into the mountain to take this shot. The reason why it seems blurry is not because my hand was moving, but I was experimenting with one of the settings that made the picture just a tad larger than normal and took just a tad longer to actually take. Sort of like an old-fashion exposure in which the subject had to stay perfectly still for a couple of minutes before the picture was completed.

Same kind of exposure setting for this one a well. Walked up the trail a little bit in order to get a better shot.

A little bit further up the trail. This one and the preceeding two can be found from about a year ago on this blog, except in a very barren state as those were taken when the fall/winter season of 2010 was in full effect.

This is looking south down Mountain Road beyond the concrete barrier. As you can see, Mother Nature is once again reclaiming the street, which was clened up as recenly as a year ago. However, Storm Alfred did a remarkable job of trashing it again.

Still looking south up Mountain Road. I was trying to get a good canopy/tunnel style shot, but the leaves are starting to fall a little early this year. Still, the colors are fantastic.

Back looking north down Mountain Road. The group home for the developmentally disabled is in the near right foreground, which will make another appearance in a few weeks. I think you can get a basic idea of what kind of canopy shot I was looking for here.

A much better canopy shot, looking south up Moutain Road. I'm just past the Augusta Drive and yes, that is the world famous "Road Closed Ahead" sign.

At long last, it's the unknown disposable camera! Sometime, during either the spring or early summer, I shot up my last disposable camera. For the next ten months or so, it sat next to my computer, silently imploring me to get it developed. Finally, at the tail end of April of this year, I did just that. My friends, please enjoy this quiet pictorial interlude sans captions, as I believe that the pictures in this series speak for themselves. Also, please keep in mind that the bulk of the pictures shot were of our feathered friends, because even though there are other subjects, they were shot more as interesting interludes than anything else.
