City Water Taxi

This week our assignment is to document the day or night in the life of a Boston cab driver. Being contrary, I chose to document the life of one Captain Fred of City Water Taxi, a Boston water taxi company. He was great, and I actually had a ton of fun. This was the first time I've ever gone out with another student to shoot, and it was a good time. Here are some photos - I am having the toughest time narrowing them down.

Note: these photos are fairly untouched, because that's the format my professor likes to receive them in.

Here are my pictures for this week's assignment, which was to take environmental portraits - portraits that show a person in their environment, doing what they're doing - of a Boston business owner. I chose to photograph Jenny Kisiel of Pure Hair Design in the South End. I think they turned out pretty well!

We had a really tough assignment, basically to stalk bike messengers and produce a story. Which, if you live in a city, you know is tough, because they move REALLY fast. This assignment was made much harder by the fact that our professor has apparently been giving the same assignment for years, and the bike messengers DO NOT LIKE IT. Even the one friendly messenger I talked to wanted to know our professor's name...

Anyways, here are a couple of not-that-exciting photos.

I like this photo a lot. It's by the guy in the two portraits I posted below, Ryan McCune, who is an incredibly talented photographer and knows his sh*t about lighting. This was pretty much everyone in my JO 537 class today trying to play with some studio lighting in the photo lab; clearly photographers do not make great subjects. Also, that's our professor in the back aiming the strobe into Ryan's eyes...?

Transportation In and Around BU

These are the five final edits I turned in as my second assignment for JO 522, Professional Portfolio. The idea was to document methods of transportation in and around BU. It was a total clusterf*ck trying to finish it, as we got the assignment Tuesday and I left Thursday morning at 7 for Florida, and just got back last night at midnight, and it was due this morning at 9. So basically I only had Wednesday from 3 til dark to complete it. Oh and by the way, there was a huge blizzard that turned into a monsoon that day. Awesome! On the bright side, I now know that my waterproof boots are NOT waterproof... Anyways, I think I did ok considering the time restraints, but let me know what you think!

...from a very restful and fun winter break. By the way, BU has insanely long breaks. At Michigan, I usually got, what, two weeks tops?? Meanwhile, I was just off for a MONTH. It's fabulous and disconcerting at the same time. It was nice to spend that much time with my boyfriend, who lives in Ann Arbor, but after a while, he may have wanted to kick me out and get some work done. Sorry honey!

Anyways, be on the lookout for bethadelson.com, my new website! Despite the high creepiness level of owning a website with your name as the title, I went ahead and did it. I need to work on it the next week or so, but after that I'll have a real official website! Woo hoo!

So I have recently discovered that I have less of hard time creating and editing projects than I do formatting, exporting and uploading them correctly. I'M SO FRUSTRATED!

I spent about an hour today trying to figure out why the hell my Detroit project, which involves huge sized photos, keeps exporting all fuzzy. And then I asked Dom, who being Dom, had the answer after about 5 seconds, and had me reformat all my photos so that I could export and upload my project in HD, since I have this nifty Vimeo Plus thing and can now embed my videos in HD on my website. (Which by the way, the website is starting to become a minor obsession for me. Does anyone else feel this way about websites? I spent some time today which I definitely do not have on changing the links on my homepage so that whatever you click to [about me, portfolio, multimedia, etc] turns a different color. What is wrong with me?!) Anyways, once I reformated all my photos and eventually the .mov file that Final Cut Pro exported, I uploaded to Vimeo with all the specifications they tell to use, AND MY PHOTOS ARE STILL FUZZY WHEN YOU OPEN IN FULL SCREEN.

I give up...

OK the website is now functional-er.

Well, it's not completely finished, but I cannot overstate how excited I am that I was actually able to figure it all out. Small victories, ok? Anyways, it's here.

For some reason the links on the left side have a weird blue box around them in Firefox but not in Safari... who knows. Anybody got any ideas why they're doing that??

Journalism Question

This issue came up in my writing and reporting class a couple days ago and I'm interested in what you think, whether you are a journalist, citizen journalist, or citizen:

Let's say you are a journalist and you are doing a story about a huge fire downtown. You're there while the fire is still going on, police and firefighters are in the are, and you interview a person who says they saw someone running out of the building right before it went up in flames, who clearly seemed suspicious.

What do you do? Do you tell the police, who are standing nearby, dealing with either another person or whatever, that you just got a tip that someone ran out of the fire in a suspicious manner? Do you not? Would your answer change if your source clearly did not want their name released to the police?

Where's the Prop 8 protest coverage in the Globe?

I can't find it. I get headlines delivered to my inbox every morning; there's nothing on it about the protest, which was 5000 strong.

I'd love to comment on the print version but someone in my building likes to steal my mail and news (I get the New York Times along with the Globe delivered) and today was one of the days my Globe was mysteriously absent. However, online you can open up a graphic of today's front page and there was not a thing about the protest (as far as I could see) on it...?

I checked Boston.com and there's nothing on the front page of that either. You have to click on News, then Local, then under Local News Updates, there's a less-than 300 word clip about the protest. And trust me, being at the protest for several hours, I am very sure that it warranted more than 300 words. And this was 300 words including some reporting done by the AP.

At some point yesterday there was a 10 photo (I believe) gallery up, but it's either long gone or my internet searching skills suck.

But why should I have to fight to find info and photos about a huge rally that happened yesterday?

Boo, Globe, Boo.
