JUMA uses soft and comfortable fabric like cotton jersey, tencel jersey, wool jersey, french terry as well as silks for dresses and tops. Knits are made from angora/ cashmere/cotton blends that feels, but not looks, like you’re wearing flannel. Jackets and pants are made from ultra smooth cotton/wool. For the Fall 2009 womens line, the color palette includes gray, navy and black with bits of forest green, brown and yellow.

Here’s how it works: There are 7 identical dresses, one for each day of the week. Every day I will reinvent the dress with layers, accessories and all kinds of accoutrements, the majority of which will be vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies.

Sounds like A-Z Six Month Uniforms (1991-2002) by Andrea Zittel and the Brown Dress Project (2005-2006) by Alex Martin except that The Uniform Project takes a step further by also being a year-long fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India. As Sheena posts daily photos to the website, she will also be adding a dollar to a fund jar. At the end of the year, she’ll have enough to sponsor one child in school. She also encourages readers to make a donation. So far, at two months into the project, $4263 has been raised. All contributions will go toward Akanksha’s School Project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for slum children in India.
