1.  Clear the clutter.  Your house cleaning never looks done if your house is cluttered.  If you’ve never decluttered your house, try tackling the clutter for 15 minutes every day.  Or try an hour.  Never take out more junk than you can sort in one session, though!  Handle the clutter only once, it’s either staying OR belongs somewhere else OR going to charity OR going to the trash.  When you finish that session–no matter how long that session is, take the trash out, the donations to the car and put away everything else.  Keep it up, every day until you’ve been through the house at least once.   Then, go again.  You think that sounds awful?  I bet I won’t be able to stop you from going again!  LOL

2.  Keep cleaning supplies in handy locations around the house.  This might seem like you’re duplicating your cleaning supplies, but your housework will go just that much faster when you don’t have to walk back and forth for cleaning supplies.   Minor cleanups are no problem if you can reach for your handy cleaning supplies right away.  You’ll need to pick up some extra spray bottles, extra sponges and microfiber cloths.  I like to use those storage caddies with handles to organize my cleaning supplies in different rooms.  You know, the caddies that look like this one:  (and if you need one – click the picture and you’ll be able to order some)

3.  Divide and conquer your housework ~ concentrate on deep cleaning one room or area per day or even per week.  I love the FlyLady’s weekly zones.  That’s about perfect for me.  Your house cleaning will be more effective if you can “zone” in on cleaning one area for a specific amount of time.  Over at Get Organized Now, they use the ‘room of the month’ method.  I like that too, but a month in one area got a little boring to me.  During that week, you’ll still be cleaning house as usual, but you’ll also concentrate on really cleaning one room or area too.  Be sure to check out FlyLady’s zones; she can make your house cleaning FLY by!

4.  Make a house cleaning checklist.   A cleaning checklist will help you breeze through your house cleaning without forgetting anything.  You can search the internet for “house cleaning checklist” or “housework checklist” and you’ll find lots of examples.  I highly recommend using a house cleaning checklist.  I was always missing something until I made a house cleaning checklist for each room and filed them in the cleaning section of my Household Notebook.   An extra benefit of having your own house cleaning checklist is that anyone can take over your house cleaning as needed should you not feel well or just not be able to.

5.  Create a housework routine to make your house cleaning faster & easier.  Do you prefer to do your housework in the morning?  Do you prefer to do your house cleaning after lunch?  Decide on the best time of day for YOU and set aside a specific amount of time, say 2 hours every day to do your housework.  When I was working, I did all the housework on the weekend, from laundry to vacuuming to bathrooms.  Yuck!  A little bit every day will make your house cleaning much faster & easier!  If you work outside the home, imagine creating a cleaning checklist for the days you work.  Trying setting aside 15 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening to work on your cleaning checklist.  In no time, you’ll love how your home looks!

These can become the beginnings of a daily routine. I try to see how fast I can finish them, then treat myself to something I love doing ~ like knitting!

BEDROOMS
Make the bed/s
Pick up clothes, toys & anything that doesn’t belong in the room.
Light dusting.

BATHROOMS
Wipe the counters and mirrors; Swish & Swipe the toilet.
Pick up anything that doesn’t belong in the room.

LIVING ROOM
Pick up anything that doesn’t belong in the room.
Straighten up.
Light dusting.

DINING ROOM
Pick up anything that doesn’t belong in the room.
Wipe dining room table after breakfast.
Light dusting.

KITCHEN
Unload the dishwasher if needed.
Load the dishwasher.
Wipe the counters and stove top clean.

Transforming Your Junk Drawer

Ninety-nine percent of the people in this world have a junk drawer. So, I’m certainly not going to tell you not to have one.

However, I am going to recommend that you organize it a bit so that instead of a junk drawer, it can be called your HELP drawer.

Here are just a few simple steps to make this transition:

REMOVE EVERYTHING. Take everything out of the drawer and place it on top of your counter. If your junk drawer is removable, remove it from the track and turn it upside down onto your counter. You may want to lay a sheet of newspaper down first to help protect your countertop.

SORT.  On your counter, begin categorizing each widget (i.e. thumbtacks in one pile, buttons in another, toothpicks in another, and so on.) By the way, when you come across a gadget that you can’t identify, put it aside. Check with others in your family to determine if it a) can be identified, and b) if it is truly needed. If not, toss it.

FIND DIVIDING TOOLS. Find something around the house that you can slip into your drawer to keep these categorized items separated, such as an ice cube tray, drawer dividers, small boxes, or 3 oz Dixie Cups. Organize these separators into your drawer.

CATEGORIZE INTO COMPARTMENTS.   Finally, begin replacing the items you are going to keep, ensuring that each categorized item is in its own place.

You’re done! Voila! One minute you have a Junk Drawer, and the next minute, you have a Help Drawer!
