Mommyhood || Today’s Thoughts- December 10, 2012

Life as a first time mom is exhausting. Don’t get me wrong, I love every moment of it, but that doesn’t change the fact that it isn’t easy. Having a newborn and being a mom is the TOUGHEST we as woman will ever have. It doesn’t matter if you have all the support and help in the world because we mothers feel everything our child is going through. When they cry you want to cry. When they laugh you can’t help but laugh. When they sleep, you REALLY want to sleep.

You don’t want to miss any milestones or any moments. Because every moment is stored in your mind and it’s those moments that get us through life and keep us smiling. When we are upset, we think about that time that our child did something goofy and we smile. When we are sleep deprived, we remember their first word (hopefully it was “mama”) and smile. When you are away and miss them, you remember happy they are when you come home and smile.

As I sit here barely being able to type this because I am so tired from the lack of sleep in the last week, I can’t help remember a moment when I was putting Tyler to bed and in the middle of his bottle, he turned his head, looked up at me, touched my face and smiled. There was nothing special that I was doing, but to him my presence at that time with him meant something and that was his acknowledgment. That tiny moment makes being a tired, crazy, sleep deprived mother worth it.

Style || Life Of Your Favorite Jeans

Have you ever found a pair of jeans that fit so perfectly?

Early in 2011, I purchased a pair of black skinny jeans from Avenue to have as a basic in my closet. Little did I know that those jeans (as well as the sister ones in blue I bought a few months later) would be the jeans that not only made it through my entire pregnancy, but are the only jeans that I can wear now post pregnant.

These jeans are like the pair from the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants"... no matter what size I am they fit. They are magic jeans. They have the perfect amount of stretch in them, the material is fantastic, and the zip detail at the bottom makes these jeans easy to dress up and down.

Unfortunately for me, Avenue no longer has these jeans in stock. I have even searched eBay for pairs and can't seem to find any. What is even worse is that I have tried on jeans from other retailers and can't seem to find pair that come close to these. T

he day that my beloved jeans go to the graveyard (like most jeans do) it will be a sad day.

Splurge vs. Save || Sequin Jacket

I am always looking for a good deal. So when I spotted this Calvin Klein Sequin Blazer, I thought it would be a fun piece to have in my closet for those nights when I want to hit the town or maybe for a special occasion like NYE. The price tag of $159.50 was not friendly enough for my wallet, so I did what I usually do and dug and dug for a better deal. Low and behold I found this sequin blazer that was not identical, but close if not better than my original find at DressBarn. And the price tag was only $59, which is much more wallet friendly.

Do you like the SPLURGE or SAVE version better?

This outfit post has been sitting in my draft folder for a few weeks now. Being that this is my first outfit post since Tyler was born, I had alittle fear of what my body would look like on screen. In a nutshell I lost my confidence. Everyday I would look at the photos and find some flaw and not post, but today I said no more to the flaws and posted it. Today is Election Day and seeing how far our world has come with regard to voting rights made me conquer my fear and remember that I am a confident woman and should stand proud.

Hope every one got a chance to vote!

Two Cents || No Plus Sizes in Macys Stores

The other day I went to my local Macy’s prepared to find a new pair of jeans. I had checked out the styles that are currently available online and while I knew that not every style would be carried in the stores, I figured I would at least get to try on some. Boy was I surprised…. After heading straight the area of the store where I THOUGHT the clothes would be and according to the directory they SHOULD HAVE BEEN, I was confused on why I didn’t see anything. Not wanting to look like a wandering fool I went and ask the sales associate if they had moved the plus section and where it was. She informed me that they were no longer carrying plus clothes in their store. WHHHHAAATTTTT!!!! Yes, that was my response too.

Being that I was disappointed and shocked, I immediately took to Twitter to convey my feelings and tagged @Macys in my tweet. Below are my tweets, as well as Macy’s response.

Seriously as if plus size woman don't have issues enough that other mass market stores not stocking their larges sizes in stores and only online now we have to deal with the fact the Macy’s doesn’t either. What would make them think that pulling plus clothes from a majority of their stores would be a good idea?

I just like every other woman in this world like to TRY ON clothes…. Don’t get me wrong I like online shopping and have become very accustomed to having to do it, but that doesn’t mean I want it to be my only option. You would think with the constant market demand for more stylish, trendy and affordable plus clothes Macy’s wouldn’t do this, nor wouldn’t I think the designers that sell at Macy’s would let them.

What do you think of Macy’s not carrying plus size clothes in their stores and only having them in a “select” few?

“It’s Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday’s, getting ready for the weekend, weekend”….. DAMN RACHEL BLACK and her catchy song.... Moving on.

For the past week Chicago has been in full on fashion-mode with Fashion Focus Chicago going on throughout the city. Every day this week (through Sunday) there have been events going on, fashion shows, presentations, workshops, trunk shows, and more. Unfortunately with my full time day job and my nights spent with Tyler, I haven’t been able to go to any of the events during the week. However, that is all about to change.

Tomorrow I have a jam packed schedule starting with an early morning trip to Modern Vintage Chicago. You may remember my post from when I attended Modern Vintage in April 2011 and the all the great finds I picked up then. I can’t wait to see what is in store for me tomorrow and what pieces I am going to walk away with. Since I am still in the post baby weight grove, my focus is going to be on statement jewelry in order to make basic clothing pieces pop.

The second event I will be attending tomorrow is the "Vintage Apres Noir: Calling All Vintage Connoisseurs" event. This event will be the end all be all of Fashion Focus Chicago. Randolph Street Market creator Sally Schwartz and Redgi Woods of ReFINDefined are hosting this fantastic event. Tickets are still available here.

Being a new mom I haven’t had much time to just be “me” and do the things that I love to do on my own, so I am looking forward to both these events.

Hello All,

Lately I have been in a branding crisis for my blog. Part of me feels that “Defying My Closet” doesn’t fit into what I will be blogging about going forward. I still will be blogging about style and fashion, but I also will be including things related to being a mom and other parts of my life.

For weeks I have been trying to come up with a new blog name that would suit me, but I haven’t come up with one that strikes at me and makes me want to take the plunge.

So here is where you come in…. should I stay “Defying My Closet” but expand my content as planned, or should I change my blog name to something that is more indicative of my new life.

Mommyhood || Baby Boy Holiday Look

With the holidays quickly approaching I am already starting to think of what I will be wearing to the various festivities, as well as what Tyler will be wearing (Though I should probably focus on what he is going to be for Halloween first). As a mom I want to make sure my child looks his best for those holiday pictures, those pictures that will be shown for the next year and that showcase your family at its best. I remember as a kid always dressing up for the holidays because of all the pictures and festivities. I had to look best in whatever pretty new fancy dress or outfit my mom put on me (well at least until I was old enough to dress myself or fight for my own dressing privileges).

The outfit I put together for Tyler is something that I know would look uber stylish in pictures ,but also would be comfortable and easy for him to move in. Plus, by dressing in layers it will be easily to remove one piece or two if he gets dirty or gets to hot. The chances of those happening are very high and I would rather have a semi clothed baby for pictures then a completely nude one (which if that happens I will deal).

Trend || Printed Jeans

Printed jeans and pants continuing on trend through this Fall 2012 season. We are seeing prints from dots, animal, skulls, and more. The type of print that you wear and how loud they are is up to you. Only you can determine what you want to wear**.

The Seven7 Gold Baroque jeans from Lane Bryant are on my must have list. I can see myself wearing them for a night on the town with my girlfriends or to a holiday party, with some low key accessories. How you style your printed jeans can make a break the look. I am all about pattern mixing, but sometimes if you have a very loud print on bottom it is best to keep you other pieces neutral.

Are you on board with the printed jean/pant trend this season? If so, what print are you most interested in?

**As a plus size woman many believe that I should "avoid" wearing any loud prints on my bottom, well I say screw you to those that think that. If I feel comfortable and like the way I look than it does not matter what others think.

Review || Maurices Colored Jegging

What I Wore- Gray Jeggings: c/o Maurices (similar) | Top: JCP (here) | Shoes: Payless

A few weeks ago Maurices contacted me about reviewing any item from their store. I jumped at the chance as I have been trying to rebuild my closet with new pieces that are classic, comfortable, and easy to style. Being a new mom it is hard to find the time to sit and think of how to style clothes (well at least for now it is since my focus I on my little man), so my focus is finding pieces that can easily be styled up or down.

Below is my review of the Denim Flex™ Colored Jegging (Gray)** from Maurices, as well as my store experience.

Item Review

1. Material: Are almost suede-like (very soft), I would classify these are “light weight denim” more pant like. For me that works as I can get away with wearing them to work on non-jean days.

2. Stretch (Denim Flex™): These jeggings have a ton of stretch in the leg and calf. In typical jegging fashion they continued to stretch throughout the day and as I moved.

3. Color- Colored pants are very much in trend this fall. While I went with a subtle color for this review***, Maurices carries this jegging in cobalt, purple, black, denim blue, and berry red as well

4. Fit- As I mentioned above the leg and calf are very stretchy. However, the waist is very true to size. So if you care more in your waist make sure to order your proper size and not size down like you would with most jegging.

5. Price: These jeggings cost $39.00 which I feel is average and fair for what you are getting, as well as compared to other similar pieces on the market.

6. Length: If you are the shorter side than you will either have to get them hemmed or just roll them up. I am 5’4 and they were about 3 inches to long on me. The black and denim blue jeggings do come in multiple lengths.

** The gray color are not available online (as for 9/19/2012), however, are available in most stores.

** Maurices allowed me to choose any item I wanted to review. I originally chose the purple jegging, however, the size I provided to them did not fit (my fault not theirs), so I went and made an exchange at a store location. The store location did not have the purple in stock, so I decided to go with the grey instead. I would been able to either make an even exchange via return shipment or the store was willing to locate the purple jegging for me at another store, but I chose to stick with the grey ones as I preferred the neutral color of them.

Store Experience

I am very happy that several Maurices have opened up not that far from where I live (3-4 within a 50 mile radius). Don’t get me wrong I love online shopping, but sometimes you just need to have the in store experience. And especially since I am dealing with post-pregnant clothes fitting issues it was nice to be able to try things on and see what size I am currently at for pieces.

The store I visited was great. The customer service associates were friendly, helpful, and not over bearing. The store was well light and clean.

I'm back (kinda)... this is what I have been doing while I have been gone :)

On Friday June 8th, 2012 at 11:39PM Tyler Lewis Krejci entered this world 11 days passed by due date (my labor story will be in another post). Suffice it to say he was very comfortable in my belly and didn't want to come out. He was born 8 lbs 2 ounces and 21 inches long.

For the last 6 weeks I have been busy taking care of the little munchkin and adjusting to life as a first time mom, but it is all worth it whenever I look at his face.

Here are the professional shots we had taken at the hospital two days after his birth. He hasn't changed that much other than he has gained weight and gotten longer (not sure where this length is coming from).

Crunchy Muffy Sushi Rolls: I have stayed away from sushi throughout my entire pregnancy until now. I didn't want to tempt myself since I can't eat tuna rolls (which are my favorite), but I caved and got another non-tuna roll version instead. And Oh Boy! was it yummy

What I Wore- Maternity Jeans: Old Navy (Shop); Top: Old Navy (Shop); Flats: Target (Similar); Necklace: Francesca's (Similar)

It seems that I have completely forgotten how to take outfit shots. That is what happens when you rarely take photos anymore. I have forgotten how to pose and have lost my confidence of taking photos in my own background and worrying about my neighbors seeing.

Once the bebe gets here hopefully I will regain said confidence of taking photos, if not I will at least have a built in excuse for photos if the baby is in every shot :)

This outfit is from 4 weeks ago, when the sun was bright and warm. 80 degrees in March in Chicago, that is all I have to say about that. These full panel maternity jeans have become a staple in my life since getting them in March. They are probably the most comfortable pair of jeans I own (including all my per-pregnancy jeans). They say once you go full panel you never go back.. Well bring on the panel I say!

p.s. I have chopped off about 2-3 inches of my hair since these photos were taken.

I am in my final trimester and in the home stretch so I felt that I would indulge a bit in some post pregnancy clothes. I don't want to buy to much since I won't know what my body will bounce back to or how long it will take to get back to my per-pregnancy size (side note: I have only gained 18 lbs so far, so I don't anticipate much of a change, however, you never know).

Pregnancy || Our Journey to Parenthood

As we get closer and closer to the date our little man is due, I thought I would share with you how this came about. No, I won’t be sharing “those specifics”, if you need that info go to your mama. For details on our dating and marriage life, see the post that I did for our third anniversary (we have now been married for FIVE years this year).

After we got married we knew that we didn’t want to have kids right away, so we decided that to get a dog (enter Homer). Though we didn’t want kids so soon, we weren’t doing anything specific to stop it from happening. In June 2008, we decided that we had waited long enough and started trying to conceive. You may wonder why we thought only a year and a half was a good waiting time, well it’s because we knew Brandon wasn’t getting any younger (he is 7 years older than me) and I was getting older.

Once we made the decision to actively try and conceive we thought it would be easy to get pregnant. I mean come on, I am the oldest of 11 kids (6 brothers, 2 sisters, 1 half brother, and 1 half sister) you would think fertility wouldn’t be an issue for me. Umm No! Months went by and we had no luck. Finally in the summer of 2009 after a year of trying, the strip turned pink and we had gotten pregnant. Our bliss did not last long, a few days after we took the HPT I started spotting (more like bleeding). I went to visit my doctor and after several days of testing, he confirmed that I had a miscarriage. It was such an early miscarriage that the doctor had told us that it was nothing, but to me (someone who had been trying for over a year now) it was something.

After this ordeal, we continued to try and month after month we were disappointed. We often talked about our options on what we would do. Would we try IVF? Would we adopt? Option after option ran through my head, but we didn’t know what to do. I decided early that I didn’t want to try IVF. Why you ask? Well I knew it would be extremely hard on my body and I didn’t want to go through something so physically and emotionally draining that couldn’t guarantee us a baby*. Also, we knew it would be expensive and since my insurance wouldn’t cover IVF, we didn’t want to start out our kids life thousands of dollars in debt.

Finally in July 2011, we decided that I need to see a fertility specialist. One that could help us figure out what was going wrong and why we weren’t conceiving. After doing some research online, I found a practice that was close to my house and that met all the needs I required. I went for my initial appointment and the doctor didn’t understand why could be wrong since nothing in my history pointed to infertility on a permanent basis. After going through the initial round of blood work and ultrasound, the doctor came back again and said that nothing was wrong with me. Brandon went and did his part in all the testing (I hope I don’t need to explain) and that test came back that he was completely fine. In fact it said his sperm was Grade A (that made him really proud). The doctors final suggestion was that I have a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) test done. This test would check my ovaries and fallopian tubes for any scaring or damage that would case my not to conceive.

In early August 2011, I went to the hospital for my HSG test. During the test, the radiologist told me that this test could be very healing for me and actually help cure what the problem was. She said 8 out of 10 times her patients end up pregnant soon after having this test. This made me feel better. She told me right there and then that according to the screen and what she was seeing that nothing was wrong and that all was good “under the hood”. We consulted with our doctor after getting the official results and she said that we should go back to trying again and that if nothing happens in two months to come back and we would start more advanced testing for infertility.

Suffice it to say we didn’t need to wait 2 months, within one month of seeing of having that HSG test I took another HPT and the strip turned pink. I was pregnant! I often wonder what changed and I know that it was getting that HSG test done that did it. I use the term "my tubes were dusty and just needed to be cleaned."

31 weeks later and I am still pregnant and everything is going along fantastically. In just over 2 months I will be welcoming to this world my little baby boy and I couldn’t be more excited.

Trying to conceive is something that is extremely personal and can be utterly heartbreaking if it doesn’t go as planned, but my advice for those that are trying is to do just that KEEP TRYING! And never give up!.

* I switched from we to I here since not going through IVF was ultimately my decision that Brandon supported

The Good, Bad, and Ugly || Week 29-30

Good

1. In 3rd trimester, FINALLY. counting the days till he arrives.

2. We have been fortunate enough to be getting some amazing weather here in Chicagoland. 80 degree days, which is positively unheard of in March.

Bad

1. While I do love the warmer weather, it is causing me to have heat flashes. 80 degree's to a pregnant woman is like baking in 95 degree heat.

2. While I have been able to find some maternity clothes that suit my style and budget, the one thing I can't seem to find ANYWHERE is a pair of black plus size maternity skinny jeans. I don't understand, these should be a basic staple item at every maternity store. I don't like that the only option I seem to have is flare black jeans. Flare jeans do not compliment a pregnant woman's figure AT ALL.

3. Some would say their boobs getting bigger would be a great thing, but for me it's not so good. In fact, this one should be under Ugly. I have been dealing with large boobs since I was 12 and have been able to control and deal with them. But if these things get any bigger they may require two forklifts to prop them up.

4. This child still refuses to kick whenever Brandon puts his hand on my belly. He could be on a two hour kicking streak and as soon Brandon voice enters the room and comes near me with his hand, he stops. Maybe this is a good thing and he knows that Daddy is in charge already.

Ugly

1. The edema (aka swollen feet) as set in already. Apparently the baby is sleeping in a certain way that is causing him to cut off the circulation to some of my blood vessels that lead down to my ankles and feet. The solution: sit will be butt against a wall and put my feet in the air for 20 minutes a night... Um not a pleasant thought.

2. A few morning's during week 29 I was hit was waves of nausea again in the morning. I've read that morning sickness is likely to come back in the 3rd trimester, but I was hoping to be exempt from that :(

Why: This is one time when all over brights works and doesn’t clash. Keiko is a genius.

Why: Mint green is one HOT on color trend, as well as statement necklaces.

Good

Finally found maternity jeans that fit. Thank you Old Navy!
Since I’ve realized the full panel maternity pants are the only way to go now, I have been on the hunt for more jeans on a budget. Thank you Goodwill!
Total weight gain at 28 weeks: 13 ½ lbs
I passed my glucose test. YIPEE! No gestational diabetes for me :). Note: if you’re pregnant and have to take the glucose test, ask your doctor for the orange flavored “juice” to drink. It was like drinking orange soda.

Bad

I am slightly anemic. While this is common during your third trimester, but my doctor still wants to watch my iron levels and have been take supplements.
Can’t seem to find a pair of black skinny maternity jeans in my size. Seriously come on! They should be a standard selling item at every maternity site.
Bending down or over has really become a big issue. It’s becoming really difficult to do a lot of things.

Ugly

My bladder is getting smaller and smaller and that window of opportunity to get to the bathroom is going along with it. If I feel it to the bathroom I go (no more waiting/holding)
The fact that we haven’t done ANYTHING to the nursery yet. Seriously we are procrastinating; he is going to be here in just 11 weeks.
Having pregnancy brain. I used to have an awesome memory and could remember the tiniest details. Not so much anymore.
Pregnancy gingivitis (bleeding gums): Have been dealing with this since week 14, but I feel like its getting worse. However, I do hear that it immediately goes away after the baby is born.
Having to get a shot in my ass. Since I am RH negative, I had to go a hemoglobin shot in my buttocks at 28 weeks, and will have to get another when he is born.
