I'm pretty loyal to small businesses that earn my respect and never disappoint. Trichology is one of those businesses.

Several years ago, frustrated with my current hair stylist, I sent a tweet out looking for a stylist that was familiar with curly hair. Trichology replied & booked my appointment on the spot. And, for more than three years, they've been continuing to impress me.

Prospect in Park City, Utah

Before descending upon a destination, I heavily investigate its local shopping venues. More often than not, shopping is not my primary reason for visiting a new city (shocker!) and mapping out shopping destinations ahead of time can prove to be very valuable when I'm presented with unexpected free time. In the case of my last trip, I actually planned an entire afternoon of local shopping into my schedule, a luxury that was highly rewarding.

During the trip, I stayed in Salt Lake City. However, after polling several times on twitter, I hadn't developed a lengthy list of local SLC shops. I did, however, find several shops in Park City, a 45 minute drive from SLC. So, I rented a car and drove straight out to Park City when I landed in SLC.

It was two days prior to Sundance Film Festival, so the downtown streets of Park City were a little chaotic. I loved it. At one point, I sat on a bench and watched crews load in the Kenneth Cole & Acura pop-up shops into small museum-like spaces. The only downside of this timing is that several small retailers were also doing individual designer pop-up spaces within their shops. I received comments like, "my shop is so empty until tomorrow." It really didn't bother me though, I can tell if a shop is a good shop.

And, Prospect is a good shop.

Prospect was not only the first shop that I found online leading up to my trip, but it was also the first shop that I visited when I arrived in Park City. I actually used its address in my GPS. It didn't disappoint.

Prospect has a dry goods feel to it, but with a little glamour. They sell beautiful semi-precious jewelry (like the necklace pictured above) but paired with utility boots and rustic bags.

In the back, you'll find both a men's and women's rack filled with apparel: some architectural, some soft and cottony for layering. Kathleen would love the muted tones and textures of their pieces. I did.

If Prospect had intentions of the cold dry goods vibe, they didn't succeed. Their shop is absolutely welcoming and warm and the owner was captivating to chat with. They were preparing for a Nixon pop-up shop while I was there and I almost drove back up to attend the next day.

Spaces like this give the shop a great amount of character.

Although I captured no photos of their adorable children's counterpart, Prospect Youth, I can attest that it is undeniably cute. If you enjoy a good adult outfit, shrunked into child size, you'll love the place. It's just down the street from Prospect and I encourage you to stop there too!

Whether gathering one-of-a-kind eyewear for their locations in Oklahoma City and Tulsa or creating thoughtful window displays (Oklahoma City holiday 2011, Tulsa early fall 2011, Black Optical gravitates toward good design. I'm always impressed.

Their latest signature product, however, may be their best design yet... the Eyewear Sleeve.

Movable Type Truck at Collected Thread

During last week's Live on the Plaza, I had the pleasure of printing in the Movable Type Truck. Yay! I've been following the progress of the truck since the Kickstarter project began last year, so this was especially exciting.

Traveling around the country, owner Kyle Durrie sets up shop and teaches printing techniques, sells nifty products that she's printed and allows type fanatics like me to print in her truck.

How many years in a row do you need to replicate an event for it to be considered a tradition?

I say... 2 years. This methodology allows me to officially claim my real garland mantel as a tradition. As a tradition of the tradition, I will also be purchasing my garland from Horn Seed Company.

I've mentioned Horn Seed before, but never during the holidays. The holidays at Horn are really a completely different experience from any other time of the year. Their nursery spaces burst at the seams with live Christmas trees, garland and poinsettias. The flocking machine and flockmaster (yes, I coined that term) are in full force, churning out trees by the hour in whites, creams and pinks (not joking, pretty cool).

Although I'm a diehard local shopper, there are times that I need to whip out my debit card for a little online therapy. In light of the ever-present holiday shopping season, I've decided to mention a few of my favorite online small businesses.

Fishs Eddy: A collection of linens, dinnerware & funky mugs. I originally discovered Fishs Eddy when my friends from Brooklyn (Hi Hatzes & Amanda) co-hosted a baby shower that featured darling striped paper straws. After numerous compliments (all by me), they told me about Fishs Eddy. I bookmarked the website that night.

Schoolhouse Electric: In a search for vintage reproduction light fixtures several years ago, I found Schoolhouse Electric. Their customer service and product quality is impeccable. Recently, they launched a brand new website with a collection of home furnishing goodies. I could write an entire blog article on how much I need this slipcover. But, I won't.

Brook Farm General Store: I love their clean white aesthetic mixed with natural woods and linens. Every time I visit their site, I'm inspired by their simple, classic product designs.

Three Potato Four: They are now keeping weekend hours in Philly. I must visit!

Pencil Shavings: Rachel is never afraid of a little bright color & I respect that. Someday soon, I will order the Gingham Iphone cover that I've been coveting. *The Pencil Shavings Blog is nice as well!

Forestbound: If I've been a good girl, there is a solid chance that I might have one of these bags under the Christmas tree this year. :)

Blue Eye Brown Eye: I met Lauren at an event that chirps & cheers hosted last year and I've been following her since. I love her embroidered cards.

Urban Remains: For as many years as I can recall, I've been an industrial vintage nut. There have been several times that I've considered flying to Chicago for the sole purpose of driving a Uhaul back filled with pieces from Urban Remains.

McKinney Texas & Bloom

This article is otherwise known as The One Where Allison Forgets to use her Camera.

Honestly, it was quite sickening to realize that I made it home with no more than five usable photos from this shopping adventure. To make the situation worse, two of the five were tourist poses of Brigette (Settling West) and I at Bloom. Cheesy, I know.

A little background info. Brigette and I are what people refer to as football widows. Our husbands are obsessive football fans (both NFL and college). We are not. This poses a few problems when entire weekends are dedicated to sport watching. It also provided an interesting situation when we were dragged to OU/TX weekend in Dallas.

We made the most of our time in the big D and visited nearby McKinney, Texas. It's a dreamy little town, with a town square, friendly people, and holiday decorated light poles. Instead of photos, I've included a list and links to the wonderful shops that we enjoyed that weekend:

Bloom: A big thanks to Kendi at Bloom for welcoming us in with a big hug and allowing us to fill our empty arms with amazing purchases from your shop.

Old Red Lumberyard: Their Junk Day events only happens on specific dates, but I highly advise scheduling your trip around it.

Nan Lee Jewelry

Good Look: Although Good Look is located in Princeton (a neighboring town to McKinney), owner Vince sets up at the Old Red Lumberyard. I need his collection of White English Ironstone now.

Patina Green Home & Market: This is a perfect lunch spot with a cute shop in the back.

Chase Hall

Orisons: They had a pair of perfect boots on sale for a song, in my size, and they didn't make my calves look large. I got stage fright and couldn't close the deal. I've regretted it since.

Dude, Sweet Chocolates

I stumbled into an amazing chocolatier, Dude, Sweet Chocolate during one of my many Dallas trips last year. I've become a solid fan of their chocolate & product packaging. Although they carry a standard product line, they also develop daily creations, available first come first serve only.

As compensation for being dragged to OU/TX weekend, I recruited Kevin (my husband) to visit Dude, Sweet Chocolate last friday when we arrived in Dallas. He's not a big sweets guy, so he was also along to restrain excessive chocolate purchasing.

They retail a variety of chocolate concoctions: truffles, bars, sauces, fudge, toffee, and nuts+chocolate products, including my all-time favorite... Chubby Nuts.

Chubby Nuts are hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, soy nuts and almonds, smothered in several layers of goodness and topped with powdered sugar. My mouth waters at the thought of this glorious creation. I would eat the Chubby Nuts that I purchased last Friday to alleviate this wanting, but those are long gone.

All of Dude, Sweet's products are made on site and the staff is infinitely knowledgeable about the recipes and processes. We were lucky to taste test a few... this one is Stoner's Paradise (malted milk powder, malted milk crisp, hemp oil):

This particular product sold out in one day (we contributed to that sell out). And, that's it. It probably won't be available again. We also tasted a "Sake Bomb" truffle and toffee. Divine.

Packaged in their signature stamped cardboard, all of their products have a thoughtful name and conscious combination of ingredients... a Love potion, a One Night Stand potion, even a Break Up Potion. Their Break Up Potion is created using Breckenridge Distillery bourbon, Agave syrup, Valrohna cocoa and Venezuelan dark chocolate...

I think that combination could ease some pain.

She held a comment contest on her blog (Pippin & Pearl) in honor of her artist reception at Deep Fork Grill. I rarely win random contests, so I decided to gloat about it for a little while. I need a boat.

Including a great pair of aviators (we're talking sunglasses here...) and a classic denim jeans, there are a few things that a modern lady should own for her casual life. These days, I purchase items for longevity. I want my clothing to age and still look great.

I want to develop a style that is more about me and my life than about the latest trend.

I'm into classic dress shirts, leather bags, dresses than can transcend a variety of moods and feminine v-neck tees. I splurged on a pair of suede boat shoes at Heirloom Shoe and I think it they were a great addition to my collection. I'm looking forward to the character these guys are going to develop over the years...

The VW Passat: function and style

Last week, Fowler VW tweeted, "Passats are here and officially for sale!"

Although I'm a chick and the complete opposite of a car nut, I actually care about this announcement. You see, the Passat and I had a fleeting relationship a few weeks ago. It was passionate, flirty, and traveled many miles. Fowler VW was the matchmaker. Here's how that went:

Fowler VW called me and asked me to test drive a new Passat for a week. Of course, I was happy to accommodate.

Fowler supports the Plaza District and I love that. If they asked me stand on my head, I'd probably do that too.
I'm actually in the market for a new car. My 2002 VW Jetta (that was totaled last year by hail) has seen better days. Rather than keep the Jetta all to myself, I would prefer for it to spend the remainder of its time on earth in the hands of a 16 year old that just needs a running vehicle to escape her boring parents. That was a nice way of saying, "I want to get rid of it as soon as possible and drive a shiny new car instead."

There are many features on the Passat that are noteworthy. I couldn't possibly cover all of them in a blog post. Instead, I'm going to focus on a gadget that I think everyone will appreciate: the CarGo system.

These little devices interlock and velcro to the floormat of the trunk.

You can make two L-shaped pieces...

and lock these two pieces together...

and stabilize small items in the trunk!

The CarGo trunk system is a perfect shopping accessory.

When I picked up the car, Jonathan Fowler suggested that it was great for transporting vases of flowers home. Isn't that sweet? On second thought, maybe I should persuade my husband to get a Passat...

The weekend that I had my Passat, we did a girlfriends' trip to Grand Lake. Driving it to Tulsa and back was a dream and the leg room in the backseat was better than most SUVs I've been in.

In fact, the only disappointing thing about the whole test drive was that I had to give it back...

Verdigris

I always find it notable when something... a sitcom, a business, a development ... seems to mirror my own maturing. With Oklahoma City's recent rejuvenation, I've found myself bonding with spaces or buildings across town, saying "Well buddy, let's push through these growing pains together " or "glad someone else finally decided to straighten up and act professional too."

Never before, however, has this feeling hit me as hard as it did two days ago.

A little background: As a college student, I started experimenting heavily with vintage and repurposed clothing... making bags out of old ties, disassembling and reassembling t-shirts, personalizing generic stuff with patches and emblems... Naturally, the Army/Navy Surplus was a prime target for my treasure hunting.

At the time, central Oklahoma City's Army/Navy Surplus was located at the corner of NW 10th Street & N Classen Blvd. I spent many a Thursday afternoon combing that establishment for the perfect ingenious accessory for the weekend. And boy, did I wear (too many of) them. All good things come to an end though and that location closed several years ago. Thankfully, I've also evolved and more often, I direct my creative passions toward decorating and home improvements.

Flash forward to Monday: When I graced that doorway at 10th and Classen once again, this time to visit Verdigris, a new antique shop... I couldn't help but wonder if someone had been reading my mind. The same old building and I remained, but both of our styles have been modernized. Vintage industrial, 50's inspired, sleek, worn wooden tools — I was in love.

Immediately, I noticed these repurposed cow tag keychains.

There are a variety of numbers available... fitting for a thoughtful wedding anniversary or birthday gift?

I pretty much fell in love with this cabinet at first sight. It wasn't until I analyzed my photo later that I noticed all the other cool stuff around it... cameras, signs, oil cans, film reels.

A few more cameras and some sweet milk glass pieces. These were in Sara Kate Studio's booth in the newly opened back building.

I also grabbed photos of these fantastic fabric pieces in the back building. I'm still trying to establish a sewing project for the muted swatch on the far right. Just give me time.

Byrd & Bleecker: A lovely afternoon break

Not too long ago (actually longer than I care to admit... this blog post is a little tardy), I spent a weekend in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area with my college friends. We reminisced, celebrated momentous occasions, ate wonderful meals and generally caught up on each other's lives. Of course, no weekend would be complete without a little shopping.

We were thankful to make it to byrd & bleecker, a shop specializing in paper products and wonderful accessories in Ft. Worth, just before close of business. Although it was time to wrap up shop, owner Libby was gracious with her time as we gabbed about funny stories from college and told her about our hometowns.

After a laugh-so-hard-you-cry letterpress greeting card therapy session, we made our way to the books. I don't think the chuckling ceased the entire time we scanned book covers and home accessories. Apparently, we were acting silly enough that I convinced Elise and Ashley to take this photo...

Byrd & bleecker has a selective style — not just any paper product or stationery designer can make the cut. I highly recommend her greeting cards which are very reasonable in price given the quality. I also adored her invitation collection, very well curated and beautiful.

Gypsy Wagon: light, bright and funny

I've shopped The Gypsy Wagon in Dallas, Texas several times. However, this shopping trip I was low on dough (which is pretty much a constant when you love shopping as much as I do...), so I brought my camera instead. I call it "lens shopping." Although I can't take the cool stuff home with me, at least I can drool over pictures of it in the comfort of my own home. Feel free to do the same.

Let's start with the clothes: Jeans, cotton dresses, Bandit Brand tees, boots, classy casual accessories...

I signed up for their emails and occasionally receive a Molly's Style email, which I love. Molly styles using a creative mix of The Gypsy Wagon's accessories and clothing items. Although she features items available in the store, it inspires me to brainstorm... pairing something new (like cowboy boots) with my existing wardrobe. Here's an example from their Facebook page:

I knew I would enjoy their home accessories when I spotted the most popular item that I've ever pinned on Pinterest: the Hello Sign.

Perfect for a party or cheerful bedroom, these alphabet tiles are hand painted in variety of patterns and colors.

The tiles look great used in the display for their dorm accessories too!

Bedding and kitchen linens are well-chosen for comfort and personality (especially the pillows!)... flirty designs meet cool cotton with a wink, wink, nudge...

That same humor pops in throughout the store. Anyone else get a kick out of this display? Love it.

LIVE on the Plaza Event: QR Code Scavenger Hunt

This Friday, during the Plaza District's LIVE on the Plaza event, Shopcrawlr is hosting a QR Code Scavenger hunt. Here's a little background info:

What is a QR Code?
It looks like this:

These scannable codes will direct you to a website, a video, a text, even a phone number... Now that you know what they look like, you will start to see them on products and businesses everywhere.

How do you scan them?
Smart phones (Iphone, Blackberry, Droid...) are capable of scanning these codes.

Download a free QR Code Reader application. The application I use is called QRReader.
Open the application and hold your phone where the code you are scanning is visible on the screen. Your phone should automatically read the code and start opening the link. Feel free to try it with the code above.
After you have scanned codes, you can look in the history section of your QR Code reader to reference the links at a later time.

How does the scavenger hunt work?
During Friday's LIVE, QR Codes will placed all over the Plaza District. A few of the codes will direct you to a prize or discount page, courtesy of various Plaza District businesses. 10% off, free tees, free keychains and Keep it Local OK cards will be hidden in various spots around the district (via QR Codes). If you are a winner, please read instructions on that page for how to redeem your prize.

Dallas shopping: We are 1976 & the canvas bag

I was giddy to visit the We Are 1976 shop after ~~stalking~~ following them on Facebook for quite some time.

Even considering the extreme risk that I would be tempted to break my window-shopping-only streak, I entered into the creative and welcoming space that is We Are 1976.

Their hip prints and artwork rocked. I wandered for many minutes in awe.

These yo-yos put my business cards to shame. Legit!

I think I have an unhealthy obsession with the next two products. I can't get this Utility apron and canvas bag out of my mind.

In my search for The Pearl Cup on Henderson in Dallas, I stumbled upon Again Design Studio. After talking with an employee in the shop, I discovered that they actually had two locations off Henderson (both of which were fabulous). On this particular trip, I spent more time at the Again Design Studio and the following photos were taken there.

Their specialty is revamping furniture from the 50's, 60's, and 70's into a 2011 masterpiece. Although not all furniture gets a remodeling job, they have a trusted staff of upholsterers and designers that will work on those pieces that do need it.

I spotted several gems in their 2003 Henderson location. This glass light fixture was a favorite:

Since I'm short and couldn't read the tag, I called this one the kite light fixture. Looking at it now, I see a resemblance to a satellite or space station in orbit. Either way, it's a statement piece.

Yes, I've drank too much coffee this morning.

They regularly post new arrivals on their Facebook page. I especially love their before & after photos of upholstered pieces. I can only imagine how their designers would modernize this French-inspired chair with the caned back...

These would be fantastic as head-of-the-table dining chairs, reupholstered or not:

I saw this little guy and immediately thought: bench. However, in reevaluating this piece without the cushion, I saw a sleek coffee table. That's the beauty of vintage pieces; they can be artfully repurposed.

Dallas: A quick stop at stelladallas

I know many Oklahomans will hate the following statement, but... I love Texas. I have a good friend in Dallas and I visit often enough to know the shopping areas solidly and recognize shop owners in a few of my favorite shops.

Every single time I visit Dallas, I visit stelladallas.

Every. single. time. Hopefully, that expresses how inspired I am by this marvelous little Lovers Lane shop.

The back of the shop houses a greeting card selection (previously discussed here: Dallas shopping feature - StellaDallas), wrapping papers and refined office products from Russell + Hazel.

Working my way to the front of the shop, I spot a nice example of their best selling product: bright colored pillows.

It's no surprise that they can barely keep their pillows in stock. Displayed with neutral furniture, the pillows are easy to picture in your own home. Every time I visit, I convince myself that "no, I don't need to add (insert amazing color here) into my living room palette."

This visit, I was drawn the the navy patterned pillows. Aren't they perfect? In fact, isn't this whole display perfect?

Although not visible in this photo, the lansburgh blanket featured on this bed has violet, yellow and white sections. It was beautiful with the Darly bedding collection, also from Designers Guild.

FYI, the yellow and gray artwork is actually framed wrapping paper. Genius!

Becca at Trichology

I originally found Trichology Salon through Twitter a few years ago. I'm an active Twitter user (@shopcrawlr) and I sent a plea into the 140-character world looking for a hair stylist that specializes in curly hair. Trichology replied and immediately booked my appt through direct message on Twitter.

Dozens of haircuts later, I'm still really happy with Trichology and my stylist, Travis. I thought things couldn't get any better... and then they announce the addition of a new makeup line: Becca Cosmetics.

Although Trichology has done makeup application in the past, they didn't have a signature makeup line that they sold in the salon. I know the salon staff pretty well & I know they've been meticulously searching for the perfect makeup line. Well, I think they've found it.

After my last haircut, I played with every product in the Becca bar. I loved the concept of their eye tint— it's a creme shadow that turns to a powder consistency after application. Therefore, no eyelid creases.

Bronzers and blushes came in a nice variety of colors. I usually lean towards corals and pinky pinks & their color selections accommodated me for both.

Every product was soft and light and showcased colors that worked with my (pale) skin tone. After reading Becca's philosophy on makeup, that's not a surprise.

I'm currently a NARS girl. However, Becca offers SPF 25 in their makeup (which my current foundation does not) and their powder felt amazing on my skin, so I'm going to give it a try this summer. I'll let you guys know how it goes—

If you haven't visited RetrOKC in the Plaza District (Oklahoma City) yet, I highly advise it. Whether you're a mid-century modern connoisseur or just someone that appreciates a quirky home accessory, you'll find something to enjoy.

This vintage pool locker drawer is only $15 and could be the perfect industrial chic element to your home office.

I doubt that you'll find out how to hang a flatscreen TV or what to do when your solar yard lights don't work, but that's the fun in this vintage Handyman's book. He's definitely drilling a hole by hand on the front cover.

This chair caught my eye, maybe as a side chair in a small living room? or as a guest chair in your home office?

The 1950's and 1960's seemed to be prevalent in their eyewear selection, which encompassed several levels of a glass case. Although these are vintage, you can still modify them with your own lenses and correction. Or, wear them for fun.

My initial visit to RetrOKC was because of something they posted (upside down and disassembled) on their Facebook page... these chairs.

I knew I needed them. Kevin also appreciated them because they were originally from the University of Oklahoma & still bear a metal emblem on the bottom. Hard to picture it, but I placed them at our dining room table. I think they're a great fit.

RetrOKC is packed with cool stuff, the prices are reasonable and the merchandise turns over quickly. If you spot something on their Facebook page or in the window, I would jump on it. Also a warning, they don't keep strict morning hours on Thursday & Friday (they are out treasure hunting!). If you are planning to visit around that time, give them a call (405) 922-9981 to make sure they'll be there.

In my adventures at Dustbowl Arts Market last Saturday, I walked away with two new accessories. Both of which I immediately adorned myself with.

The first is a vintage cuff bracelet in the softest green. I wish I could remember the vendor that I purchased this from, but I don't.

The second new accessory is a fiery jeweled necklace from Pistachio. I've frequented Dana's booth so much in the past that she actually recognized me this time. Not sure if that's a good thing or not. Either way, I was happy to walk away with this beauty.

At the close of January 2011, I tallied my Keep it Local OK savings here.

Although I've continued to track my savings since then, I've failed to produce the results on the blog (as I had promised). Don't worry, I won't let you down! Here are the results from the past few months...

I thought the pin/necklace was so fun that I couldn't wait for a friend to buy me one, so I bought one for myself (I chose dark crystal on gold). Horn Seed Company: 90 years of growth

There are very few businesses that can claim a 90th anniversary. There are even fewer that boast growth and excitement for a new generation of customers in that 90th year.

Horn Seed Company in Oklahoma City is in this elite few.

Considering the number of gardening questions I've personally called Horn Seed Company with, it's no surprise that they field an average of 300 customer lawn & garden phone calls.

That's a serious dedication to their customers.

Perennials, tropicals, vegetable plants and the store kitty are in their greenhouse, located east of the main building.

Where is he?

Found him. So cute!

Annuals, shrubs, trees and at least one fearless butterfly are in the open air nursery to the west of the main building.

On Saturday, a conversation about Horn Seed Company started on twitter. Having recently taken these photos, I jumped in and chatted about their 90th anniversary with Jennifer James (_jenniferjames). I loved that she finished our conversation with, "Their seed cabinet is one of my favorite things in all of OKC..."

The vintage labels, technicolor flowers, matching little drawers... I love it too.

I'm also quite fond of the man I call the "Keeper of the Seeds."

Yep, that's him in the overalls behind the counter.

Here's an example of his talents. Last year, I attempted to grow carrots. I bought a pack at the big box home and garden store down the street. A few sprouts came up, but eventually perished in my hostile environment.

This year, I headed to Horn Seed and walked directly to this man. I said that I needed carrot seeds and in a voice like the Wizard of Oz (okay, maybe not) he asked, "What's your soil like? Is it any good? What about sunlight, how much direct does it get in the afternoon? Is it a raised bed? How much room do you have?"

I answered each question with the constant hesitation that I might be answering wrong and he threw me a brown envelope of carrot seeds.

With blind faith, I planted what he gave me... and they grew beautifully!

Although they carry a number of useful tools and accessories (the item above is a must-have), their expertise makes gardening with Horn Seed Company a success.

Kitchen accessories: a welcome addition to Wild.flower

When I remodeled my kitchen last summer, I painted everything white. Literally... walls, cabinets, sink, trim.

Why?

I love white. (Anna over at Door Sixteen will confirm that I'm not crazy.)
My home's style constantly evolves— it would've been very hard for me to commit to a long-term style choice in such a pivotal room.
Most importantly, I thought the white would allow for creativity with accessories, which it has.

In fact, I have almost become one of those tea towel people. You know the type... they have a set of display towels for their oven handle or to fold nicely on the counter. Then, they have a second set of real towels, to use like a towel. Unfortunately, only I know the difference between my display and real towels. The second time I walked in and saw the hubs drying a pot with a vintage hand-embroidered number, I decided to end my frustrations and give up.

This revelation makes me appreciate a good kitchen accessory that can serve double-duty: fashion & function. Thankfully, Wildflower is featuring an even larger variety of these accessories in their new location at 1751 NW 16th Street in the Plaza District. I advise sprucing up a tired kitchen with any of these:

Diaper Delight: Green Bambino

During a wedding shower last Saturday, the conversation turned to cloth diapers (I swear, it was a fun wedding shower!). I conversed about the Green Bambino shop for a few minutes and started to say, "Check out the Shopcrawlr Blog post that I wrote about them..."

That's when it hit me. I never published such post. This post had been scheduled before the major website change and inadvertently lost in the shuffle. My apologies!

I will start by admitting that I'm not a parent. Therefore, I do very little diapering. That doesn't, however, stop me from appreciating this little shop o' diapers.

In talking with owner Morgan Harris, I understood her passion for using cloth diapers as well as the extensive amount of knowledge she has about the process. Questions about fabrics, fit, detergents, liners... she can answer all of them off the top of her head. GB's Facebook page has even developed into a Q&A forum for cloth diapering questions.

The New & Improved Shopcrawlr!

It's been 6 years since I originally created the concept for Shopcrawlr.

In these 6 years, I've switched from punch to red wine, I've started worrying about wrinkles (we aren't talking clothes), I've put 75,000 miles on my car, gotten married and remodeled a kitchen (one was much harder than the other)... but never once did I think about abandoning my dream for this website.

The latest version of Shopcrawlr, the one you are seeing right now, best serves the purpose I originally intended: For shoppers to find local shopping. If you're looking for eyewear in OKC or eco-friendly products in Norman, Shopcrawlr can send you in the right direction.

Shopcrawlr has always been an evolution. Here's a quick recap of where the website has been:

2004	Allison does group project in college for a Business Strategy class. She proposes a website where shoppers can easily find local shopping. Her idea is turned down in favor of a log cabin rental company.
2005	Allison spends a plethora of time developing a business plan for OKShop.com. Upon realizing the semester is almost over, she turns the business plan in as a semester project. It's returned with A- on the top.
2006	Allison graduates and joins the workforce. Cityshopper.blogspot.com is formed.
2007	Allison shops and writes about it. She attempts to purchase cityshop.com, but realizes that domain is expensive!
2008	Allison begins creating Allioppe.com instead. (Allison + shoppe... Allioppe. It's okay, no one else understood it either)
2009	Allioppe launches. The Allioppe blog continues to grow a following.
2010	Allison hosts several Shop Crawls in Oklahoma City & shoppers have a great time. Allioppe relaunches with a new name, Shopcrawlr, and a new logo.
2011	Shopcrawlr launches in its finest form.

I know several of you have followed me through the ups and downs. Thank you! This new website is a reward for your patience.

Glimpse of Brookside: Sideways

I wish I could title this post: The complete guide to Brookside. But, I can't.

Mainly, because I didn't get to see all of it. I woke up late (as usual) and didn't make it to Tulsa in time to fully explore my list of stores. I'm thankful that I made it to Sideways, Black Optical and SR Hughes in Brookside before my scheduled party that night. I've got high hopes for the rest of the district, which I hope to explore within the month.

Tucked in a little side-street off Peoria, Sideways sells apparel and home goods. The bedding and rug selection immediately caught my attention. I love stripes in bedding and in rugs. So classic!

Total measurable savings: $21.29 I say measurable savings because I lost a few receipts... at least one from both Shoe Gypsy and Shop Good as well as a Rococo brunch. I also work from Urban Teahouse several times a week and rarely keep my receipts.

A few other notable locally-owned businesses that I visited this month (although not members of Keep It Local OK yet...): Spencer Stone, Johnnies Charcoal Broiler, Winston McDoogals, Coffee Slingers, Green Bambino (blog article soon), 105 Degrees, wild.flower and Joe Momma's Pizza in Tulsa. Supporting locally-owned businesses can be convenient and affordable. I had wonderful experiences at each of these businesses and they all get my stamp of approval.

Tulsa Part 1: Blue Dome

A few weeks ago (yes, I've been a negligent blogger), I had an event to attend in Tulsa. I reached out to my network and took suggestions for local restaurants, stores and communities to visit. I only had time to visit a few of the suggestions that weekend, but I'm planning an exclusive shopping trip soon to visit the rest.

We arrived around lunchtime and immediately hit Joe Momma's in the Blue Dome District, thanks to a suggestion from the Keep it Local OK guys. It was delicious. I went on a quick date with Natalie Portman. I think it's love.

Post lunch: A stop in Boomtown tees (fun!), then to Dwelling Spaces.

Dwelling Spaces has a funky, urban vibe that's not intimidating to those of us that are only semi-indie. Tons of cool Tulsa and Oklahoma products and designers, prints, tees, even a cute coffee spot (Joebots).

On the day we visited, the Blue Dome district was vibrant and bustling. Later that day, we drove through at night and fun people filled the sidewalks. Jealous that I couldn't stay, I made a mental note to checkout the nightlife next time.

Urbanology: Attainable Modern Furnishings

My personal style evolves slowly, but with intention. I've recently developed a love of mid-century modern home accessories. I'd be the type to sport a plain couch, vintage industrial floor lamp and mod chair.

That said, I have many statement chairs (and other accessories) to chose from at urbanology. Thankfully, the price tags didn't shock either.

Keep it Local OK is a cool program. I think the program is so cool that I've forced Bryce & Chris (Keep It Local OK owners) to be friends with me. They're local celebrities and I hang out with them to feel cool and hear funny stories. Over the past year, I continually inform them about the money I have saved with my Keep it Local card. Finally, they told me to "prove it." So, I am.

For the next 12 months, I'm tallying my Keep it Local OK card savings monthly on this blog. I'll do a wrap-up post at the end of each month that mentions the spots I saved and products I've purchased as well as a monthly total. FYI, this post also counts as the expected New Years Resolution post...

barre 3: a quick review

Although I normally write about shopping and shopping-related things, I am making a special exception today, forgive me.

barre3 recently opened in Classen Curve & I was lucky enough to get into a free promotional class last night. As a former ballet dancer and a current pilates lover, I made quick assumptions that I would love barre3. And I do. I highly suggest trying at least one class, especially if you enjoy pilates or yoga. A few things...

The one-hour class flew by. Although we were intensely working our body the entire time, I didn't notice how much time passed.
Don't feel intimidated. The instructor is very informative when describing a movement or position. She walked around and helped us correct our form and posture. She also provided several levels of most movements so that we could pick the movement that fit our fitness level.
I had no urge to tweet during the class. Nor was I mentally developing an idea in my head (which I do constantly). This is a big deal. The class held my attention & my brain was actually able to unwind a little.
The class wasn't as much like ballet as I had imagined, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I did have to consciously continue to monitor my feet because I have a strong tendency to turn-out (like ballet) and Barre3 seemed to use mostly parallel foot positions. Ballet essentials like balance and posture were used and monitored with each movement though.
In talking with the instructors and owner afterwards, I learned that each class is different and constantly evolving. If you went every day, you wouldn't get bored.
I was a little sore this morning, especially in my abs and quads, but after a little stretching, I feel great.

Pricing starts out at $20 for a single class purchase and can decrease to about $15/class if you purchase a pack of classes. They also offer unlimited classes for $99/month. I'm Diggin' Dirt

Although I visit new stores weekly, it's actually rare that I make purchases while doing that.

When I first started this blog, I would pick up a little something here, maybe a new pair of jeans there and very quickly, I started seeing red in my checking account. I quickly formed the "no shopping while researching" policy. I say this so that you understand the depth of the following situation... Because I couldn't make a purchase on Saturday while taking photos in Bishop Arts District, I forced my husband to drive back on our way home (which was actually the opposite direction) on Sunday to shop at Dirt Flowers. He loves me.

I've pretty much become obsessed with succulents since I started watching Bravo TV's Flipping Out with Jeff Lewis a few years ago. He does an amazing job accenting whites and wood tones with cool green succulents. Don't you love the crushed mirror covering the soil in each pot?

I took mental note of several displays in Dirt so that I can replicate them in some way in my own home. Wouldn't these be amazing in my new white kitchen?

These little bud vases just might end up under the Christmas tree for a few of my favorite people. Love!

A Date with Iris on Fashion Night Out

Fashion Night Out in OKC was lovely last weekend... that is, until my car died in front of French Cowgirl. Ouch! $450 and three days without a car later, my Jetta is back (at least for now).

My life changed dramatically when I married a Sooner fan. On a normal Saturday, I would run errands, shop, maybe take in a movie. Not anymore.

When OU plays at home, we go to Norman. I have capitalized on this experience by titling every crimson or cream clothing item that I want, "gameday wear," thus qualifying it as necessity.

Dustbowl Photo Documentary

I love the Dustbowl Arts Market in Norman. Last Saturday, I visited every booth and enjoyed every minute. If you didn't attend, you will feel like you did after reading this post. Nathan and Brad Price - A father/son art team that had some incredible pieces.

The Pink Acorn: I love her Berry Rings, seen in the photo below... a cluster of colorful grapes on your finger!

Dewey and West: I remembered D&W from last year's Dustbowl and I enjoyed chatting with them again this year. I'm a big fan of their carpet coasters.

Hide the Good Scissors: Although I don't normally shop while I do research for the blog, I did buy a darling pear tea towel from Hide the Good Scissors. I couldn't resist, it was perfect for my new kitchen.

Wild Hare Beadery: Beautiful chains and earthy elements on necklaces were for sale at Dustbowl. Love! Located in Norman's Campus Corner, you can visit Wild Hare anytime you like though. Stop in for one of their classes to learn how to make your own creations!

Collected Thread: A Plaza District favorite of mine, Collected Thread always makes an appearance at Dustbowl. On display were their Local is for Lovers shirt (I wear it all the time) and adorable letterpress cards.

Tree and Leaf Clothing: I noticed several new designs from Tree & Leaf. I'm still kicking myself for not buying a soft cardigan. Maybe I'll have to visit their Rockwell Ave location here in OKC and pick up a Daily Thunder shirt for Kevin too.

Bella Vita Jewelry: Bella Vita had a very popular booth on Saturday. I wasn't able to get very many photos because there were so many people enjoying her jewelry! I did get these two though. I hear that she teaches classes at the Wild Hare Beadery. Check out her website for details.

Three Yellow Starfish: "It's good to be a baby" is their tagline. That's certainly true if your mom dresses you in Three Yellow Starfish. Bloomers, Hats, leg warmers and this adorable little knot dress. I wish I would've grabbed a few more photos!

Bark and Leaves: I frequent the art markets in the OKC area so I was familiar with most of the artists at Dustbowl this weekend. It was great to see a fresh face in the crowd at the Bark and Leaves booth. The All You Need is Love sign caught my eye immediately. She made them from old cabinet doors. How amazing!

Gleeful Peacock: Thanks to the Gleeful Peacock, I desperately need a sweater clip. It's almost Fall, what shall I do without one? Her display was so colorful; the mix of vintage and new elements alway charms me.

Samantha Lamb Photography: I think her photos are half the reason that I work from Cuppies and Joe in the afternoon...

Green Couch Design: I would love to be a fly on the wall when these two are talking about design. They create so many nice, thoughtful products.

Shop Good: If you are regular reader of my blog, you already know about these guys. I am thrilled with the success of their new 9th Street location as well as the new faces around the store (Yes, I'm talking to you, Jess and Ben).

Tweet Baby Designs: Okay, I felt rebellious on Saturday and actually made two purchases while researching this post. The first was the above-mentioned tea towel. The second purchase is below.

Julia Coburn: Dreamy feather designs... headbands, hats, clips...

Lana Williams: Lana's work intrigued me. Each piece appeared different depending on how far away from it you stood. I particularly liked one that featured a dark silhouette of woman against a colorful background. I really proved my amateur photographic skills by failing to get a decent photo of Lana's work. I blame everything... the wind, the bright sunlight, my camera... Lana, if you read this post, email me a photo or two to include with this post.

Mike and Mary Jewelry: I immediately remember their inventive ring displays from last year's Dustbowl. Each ring rests on the display, attached to a cord with a weight on it. Not only does it prevent theft, it allows shoppers to easily try on rings. It's also very cool to see blow in the wind.

Pistachio: Another new face (to me), Pistachio, grabbed my attention. I adore the mix of textures on her necklaces and she was delightful to chat with!

Bombs Away: This is a rad dude that I've been dying to meet. Friends and family have all purchased his famous Oklahoma seal shirt and I've given it as a gift several times (notice I didn't mention that I had one...). It was moderately hot on Saturday, so I was zoned into the tanks on display. I'm a big fan!

The Felt Bird: Located in Enid, Oklahoma, I have never had the pleasure of visiting The Felt Bird in person. Only through art markets do I get to enjoy them!

Sarah Swift Jewelry: Although they resemble necklaces from this angle, the pieces on the leather tray are headbands. Her designs were very original and thoughtfully assembled. Look for her work in Birdie in Norman's Campus Corner.

Headdresses: I found myself talking about these guys after I left Dustbowl. Very chill and earthy. Their craftsmanship impressed me. Look for them in the new store, Stash, that opens soon in Norman.

Cut Out and Collect: I follow the Etsy Dallas blog, which is where I first discovered Cut Out and Collect. Thanks to Dustbowl for bringin' em North O' the Border! Is that aqua and mustard purse not amazing? I need it!

Maggie May I: Yes, you may. All of her designs are made from game pieces, although very creatively altered. I can't believe these creations had former lives as checkers or poker chips...

Sew Chic Girl: Why not make baby necessities bright and fun? Specializing in burp cloths, bibs, quilts and blankets, Sew Chic Girl fluttered with color at Saturday's Dustbowl. I wish I knew a little stud-muffin that deserved one of her tie onesies.

Wonder Love Stationery and pillows: I could have taken a nap in this display. Everything looked so fluffy and comfortable!

Eye on the Sparrow: Made from used guitar strings, each design benefits the Carter Albrecht Music Foundation. I loved that the artist's name was written on the tag. I hope to see more of her designs around OKC...

Sheez Krafty: Pick any genre and Sheez Krafy has a whimsical switch cover for you. She also had some great handmade purses and bags that I didn't capture on film.

Bird Sister Knits: I had to do extensive online research to find this new artist's name. It was worth it — beautifully knitted hats and neck scarves, even little knitted rings!

Rainbow Swirlz: So many colorful shirts and bags!

Quid at Collected Thread tonight!

I had the pleasure of previewing Quid's Fall Collection at Collected Thread last night. I've admired owner Heather Whitsett's eye for picking flawless vintage clothes for awhile, however, I hadn't comprehended her talent for design and color until last night.

Heather explained that all pieces in her collection are derived from elements at least 50 years old. She researches each element and determines the appropriate era and eligibility.

These pieces can be worn 5 ways: headband (vertical and horizontal around the head), choker, bracelet and anklet.

Amazing workmanship in these necklaces. Barely noticeable, the individual pieces melt into the new necklace.

Don't worry, you haven't missed out on Quid's preview show yet. The show is open to the public tonight during The Plaza District's Live on the Plaza event, 7 — 9 PM.

I've been following Showplace Market on Twitter since their grand opening in June. I was happy to include Showplace Market as a destination on my recent Tour de Moore shopping trip (hence all the There's More in Moore articles...).

Showplace boasts a cute cafe, reading nook and an A-Z of accessories and gifts.

Friendly smiles greeted me as I approached the register at the front of the market. After a quick rundown of the layout and a heads up on a local photographer that displays in Showplace Market, I headed off —Not to resurface again for over an hour.

Thankfully, I won't have to rely completely on my amateur photographic skills for this post. Resident photographer, Carrie Marie sent me a few professional shots to use as well. Thanks Carrie!

The Final Best of OKC Ballot Review

There are still a few categories left in the Best of OKC Ballot review. Since I'm not an expert in everything (surprising, I know), I am choosing to address the Best Shopping Center or Mall and Best New Business and be done. *If anyone wants to write about the Vintage and Thrift store category, let me know.

Best Shopping Center or Mall: Honestly, there's not much to say about this one. All the nominated centers/malls contain at least one local store, however, only one is exclusively local: The Plaza District. Since my business (term used loosely) promotes local shopping, my votes are with the Plaza District on this one.

Best New Business: It's hard to start a business, so I have respect for all new businesses in the OKC Metro area! Unfortunately, everyone can't be nominated for Best of OKC. Usually, the businesses that make the ballot have something unique to offer...

Birdie - Half flower shop, half sustainable goods shop, Birdie has become a Campus Corner (Norman) favorite of mine. Owner Katie Huskerson is a creative at heart — this shines through in everything that she creates and sells.
Forward Foods on Western - Forward Foods recently transformed their new location at 51st and Western into a bright, modern space that houses a smorgasbord of gourmet cheeses and organic and local foods. Seriously, if you need cheese, Forward Foods can help you out.
Red Coyote Running and Fitness - Not only do I appreciate their innovative shoe-fitting process, I appreciate their first-mover mentality. As the first retail business to open in Classen Curve, Red Coyote took risks to embrace the new shopping center & I really like that.
Shop Good - Many stores donate to charities, but few make that their mission. Shop Good does. They also print their own tees (that are super soft and socially conscious). If you've never visited them, mark your calendar for August 4th. This is Shop Good's official Grand Opening in their new location on 9th Street: The Stache Bash.
Warpaint Clothing Co. - I think my previous post about these guys says it all. They treat their clothing creations and storefront as a work of art, so don't expect to ever walk in and find something bland. Their stuff is provocative, comfortable and flat-out cool.

Blue 7: This is the fourth/fifth time I've written about Blue 7 during the 2010 Best of OKC Ballot reviews. They carry both home and clothing accessories, which make great gifts! Many of their home items are humorous or satirical— I can thoroughly appreciate that. This is a great destination for fun office decor or little gadgets. Also, Check out the watches next time you're in there. I have accomplished several new-sunglasses and dangle-y charm necklace missions at Blue 7 as well. *Accessories & Gifts nominee
Collected Thread: Light and whimsy, Collected Thread is a nest of handmade goodies. From onesies to notecards, tees, candles and soaps, they have a wonderful selection of accessories. I especially fancy these new prints and headbands. If you haven't stopped in to meet Lindsay, Collected Thread's owner, do it! *Accessories & Gifts nominee
DNA Galleries: DNA focuses more on art and urban creations than Collected Thread, but still incorporates handmade products into their merchandise. I really like their Oklahoma City magnets and a snarky bad parking notes (Ask Amanda, she will point these out). DNA is also nominated in the Best Art Gallery category. *Accessories nominee
Lush Fashion Lounge: I feel the same way about Lush in the accessories category as I did about Blue 7 in the Shoe category: I would prefer to see them win a Women's or Men's category over the accessories category. My shoe closet:

It may not look like anything special, but in a 1300 square foot house, this is coveted space. My closet changes with the seasons and evolves rather quickly. It visibly holds 50 shoes, while storing out-of-season shoes in the back of the bottom shelves. Shoes purchased from Shoe Gypsy, Shoetopia, Pink Sugar Shoes, Red Coyote Running, Balliet's and an amazing little shoe store in Florence, Italy (I had to throw that in just to make you jealous) exist in this closet.

I also have vintage shoes, shoes from Nordstrom (that I should have bought at Balliet's... ya live, ya learn) and a few shoes that wish to remain anonymous.

I believe these facts qualify me to address the Best of OKC - Best Shoe Store category.

Blue 7 - I love this store. The evidence is here and here. They have a growing shoe department that includes Toms and Keds. However, I would really like to see them win a different category. In my ideal Best of OKC world, I would prefer stores to win in the categories that best represent them. For Blue 7, women's, men's, accessories or gifts would be a better choice.
Metro Shoe Warehouse - Does anyone know about this store? I woefully admit that I know nothing about it, and can only assume it's associated with Metroshoewarehouse.com. Please leave a comment on this post if you have opinions on this store - thanks!
Red Coyote Running & Fitness - This isn't the first time I've raved about Red Coyote, nor will it be the last. Red Coyote is not only a great asset to the fitness community, but a nice store for someone that wants to be more active and needs a good start. They carry many brands of reasonably-priced athletic shoes and the staff is very knowledgeable. Read my article on their innovative shoe-fitting process here. They are also nominated in the Sporting Goods category.
Shoe Gypsy - If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I talk about Shoe Gypsy quite a bit. First, they are a member of Keep It Local OK, so I get to use my discount there. Second, they are dangerously close to my house and a perfect place to wander post-afternoon coffee. I recently purchased a pair of Converse Slims and a pair of Seychelles (Bette) in off-white. As usual, I am happy with my purchases. Shoe Gypsy hosted a show for Helm Handmade Boots a few weeks ago. These are crazy cool boots, which might even still be on display at the store (hurry over there!!). This, along with my recent purchase happiness, make Shoe Gypsy the front-runner in this category for me.
Shoetopia - This store will always hold a special place in my heart. I shopped here several times during the point in my life when I was trying to understand why I had such a strong desire to build something to support local shopping. Every time I visited this store, I was reminded why: It's about the people. Shoetopia employees are so friendly and offer thoughtful suggestions without being pushy. That's an accomplishment in the shoe world. The only downside to Shoetopia is that they haven't expanded to sell men's shoes as well.

Obviously Absent: Pink Sugar Shoe Boutique in Edmond. I drool over Pink Sugar's variety of heels and dressy shoes every time I visit. Displayed in their open and airy store, each shoe can be easily examined. I would shop Pink Sugar during Edmond's Krazy Daze this year for sure.

Outside of Oklahoma: I cheat on my Oklahoma shoe stores pretty much every time that I leave the state. Sorry, I can't help myself! Although I change my mind frequently, my current favorite out-of-state shoe store is The Perfect Pair (Nashville, TN). They specialize in high-quality leather shoes and boots and well-chosen accessories. Plus, isn't that the cutest name?

As a female, I am a little bias to an entire genre of clothing dedicated to me. I will try to keep this post as brief as possible.

Balliet's - Last winter, I bought a pair of Cole Hahn riding boots at Balliet's. Although in re-reading that post today, I realize that I never mentioned I bought them at Balliet's. But, I did. You know who else I could have purchased there: Jimmy Choo, Kate Spade, Tracy Reese, Badgley Mischka, Valentino... Ah, the list could go on and on!Balliet's has an unparalleled list of designers. Don't drive to Neimans next time, make the 5 minute drive to Balliet's. Side Note: They are moving to Classen Curve very soon - can't wait to visit their new location!

Blue 7 - Ladies, don't feel left out. Although Blue 7 does stock a great selection for the boys, the girls' get their fair share of attention. From unique alma mater tees to dainty dresses and frocks, Blue 7 mixes bright colors with fun fashion and tops it off with a few creative accessories. They also have an entire wall of their new jean room dedicated to women. I bought my first pair of grey jeans (greans?) last weekend from this very wall.
Lucca Fashion Boutique - An excellent place to run in and buy a quick outfit for a party, Lucca is conveniently located in several locations across the metro. For any occasion (besides work), you can find something fashionable and reasonably priced. Side Note: Their sale at last year's Krazy Daze event was incredible. Great jeans and tanks for super cheap. Watch out, this year's Krazy Daze is coming up (last weekend in July, I think?).
Lush Fashion Lounge - In my men's post about Lush I talked about how comfortable the store atmosphere is and chaises. I'm guessing that women shopping in here won't ever notice either of those things— they'll be focused on cute dresses, shoes and sexy tops. Stop by Lush the next time you visit Trichology or Cafe 7.
Warpaint Clothing Co.- Let's start with with soft slouchy tanks and tees. Then, head over to their vintage boots; perfect with a metal & leather necklace... I could go on. I really like the way that Warpaint's tees fit: like your wearing your boyfriend's tee, but a little more refined. I especially like to visit their store during the Plaza District's monthly LIVE on the Plaza event — Second Friday of every month.

And the Nominees are...

I'm sure the Gazette will write an article on each business that was nominated for their Best of OKC poll. In fact, I'm excited to read those articles. I love the Gazette. I love their photos of a store owner holding a special item from their store. So cute. Here's my problem with that whole thing: I don't write for the Gazette. And more than anything, I like to write about local shopping!

Conveniently, I have this little blog where I can do just that.

We are starting with the Men today. Technically, the Gazette calls this Best Men's Clothing, under the Shopping and Services category.

Blue 7 - This is a great choice for casual men's clothing, especially denim. Tom's, RVCA, American Apparel and Bombs Away all call Blue 7 home. Last time we stopped in Blue 7, my husband was able to try on several pairs of jeans (all different cuts and washes) and also pick out a few shirts without getting irritable. Based on this alone, Blue 7 is a contender.
Lush Fashion Lounge - I will admit I have never purchased any men's clothing from Lush. However, I see several features Lush has to offer that would make it a comfortable place for men to shop. 1) They have a great selection of t-shirts and jeans; what guy doesn't like those? 2) They host a comfortable atmosphere where a guy can relax on a chaise and actually enjoy the shopping experience.
Mr. Ooley's- Sporting the likes of Oxxford, Giorgio Armani and Ermenegildo Zegna, Mr. Ooley's specializes in custom tailoring and made-to-measure apparel. Unfortunately, their location in Penn Square mall means that they can be overlooked as a local store. Don't worry about the mall traffic though, as a customer of Mr. Ooley's you have a reserved parking spot next to their entrance. :)
Spencer Stone - Located in Nichols Hills Plaza, Spencer Stone is my go-to for men's business casual attire. They have an array of dress shirts and polos as well as cardigans and sweaters in the winter. I appreciate their slim, modern take on clothing. Wander down there next time you eat at Saturn Grill or Cool Greens.
Warpaint Clothing Co. - Basically (and literally), these guys are rock stars. I feel cooler just by stepping into their store. If you can rock a pair of skinny jeans or a low-cut V neck, this place is your closet. If you don't feel cool enough for that, don't worry. Warpaint designs ultra-soft tees and hand-picks vintage clothing that anyone can rock.

Obviously absent from the ballot: Steven Giles Clothing. Due to their price range, this is probably a special occasion store for the Gazette-reading population. However, for a special occasion, Steven Giles would be my first recommendation. I love their staff and how approachable their store is. I recently sent an out-of-town friend in there for dress clothes and he raved about their service.

Prior to beginning our kitchen remodeling project, I scouted around Oklahoma City for some special pieces that we could incorporate in our kitchen plan. Based on a recommendation from a friend, I visited Architectural Antiques and Dead Peoples Stuff. Look at that sign. I knew immediately I was going to love this place. I mean, "Dead Peoples Stuff." That is a perfectly descriptive name! I will warn you that all of this amazingness you are going to view is only available to the public Thursday-Saturday. The rest of the week, they are dealing with historical demolitions, people in fancy places and shipping one-of-a-kind remnants. Um, can I please work here? As you enter their warehouse on Linwood Boulevard, an expansive collection of vintage doors greet you. Plain and historically insignificant (but still really cool) doors start at around $50. As for anything in their warehouse though, prices go up significantly based on detailing and historical significance. A finishing touch for your vintage door: I could pretty much assemble a house from the ground up using only artifacts in this warehouse. Look at this intricate marble mantel. Where is my hot toddy and long cigarette?

Great selection of sinks and faucets. I searched for an apron-front kitchen sink, but didn't find one. I have already mentally redesigned my 1/2 bath with one of these pedestal sinks though.

One of the few pieces I saw from Oklahoma, this was taken from a Catholic church in Shawnee. I envision re-purposing it as a round table or something?

Now, let's talk lighting. Lighting is something I am spending considerable amounts of time researching for my new kitchen. It would be a dream to do something dramatic like this:

However, I'll probably go with a variation on something like this. Noteworthy, but easy to keep to clean and more appropriate for the age of my house.

Also very neat:

Architectural antiques doesn't include just your average antiques. In many cases, they are salvage items from historical properties. Thus, you'll find pieces very specific in design and purpose.

I encourage you to go explore Architectural Antiques. Due to the dim lighting inside the warehouse, I was only able to capture a small portion of the pieces. If you walk inside toward the southeast corner of the warehouse, you will see an entire marble building facade disassembled. So cool.

I have a typical perspective on Oklahoma City.

I grew up in a suburb and my mom drove me into the "City" for big shopping and to see my grandparents. I got a car when I was 16 and started driving myself to OKC. I turned 18 and started at Oklahoma City University, where I was thrust into an area that has become, in a few short years, an energetic and creative place of growth. I graduated from college and had the choice to leave for work. But, I stayed.

This week, a college friend visited me. I had the joy of recommending new restaurants and stores.

"If you're looking for an Oklahoma shirt, visit the Plaza District."

"For Toms, hit up Shoe Gypsy or Blue 7"

"Good lunch? Cool Greens, the Wedge, Saturn Grill, or wait, a burger? Irma's, Nichols Hills Drug Store, Abrahams, the Burger Joint..."

"Too bad you can't make it to Taco Tuesday, or LIVE on the Plaza, or Pippin + Pearl's Art Show next month. You just missed Dead Center Film Festival. Let's work getting a cupcake into the schedule."

I realized two things: I don't shut up. I can't get enough of OKC.

A chat with Chirps & Cheers!

Today, I am featuring a chat with Susan Kropp, the owner of Chirps & Cheers in Edmond, OK. She recently returned from the National Stationery Show in New York City & she talked to me about many "chirps" and "cheers" from the show. Enjoy!

I understand that you recently returned from the National Stationery Show in New York City. Did this year’s show have a theme?

The tagline used to promote the show was “write on.” Clearly this is what everyone in the stationery industry hopes people will do. While instant communication, like email and texts, have their place, there’s nothing better than a handwritten note, a thoughtful card or a beautiful invitation… something that will last and can be saved. Cards, especially those that are letterpressed, are mini works of art and are not only fridge worthy but frame worthy. The USPS unveiled their new butterfly stamp series at the show. This 64 cent stamp will work on oversized or irregular shaped cards. Many designers will add a butterfly to the corner of the envelope indicating that the card will require this type of postage. I think this is just one example of how the industry is working across the board to keep the art of letter writing alive.

Did you enjoy the show?

Paper is to me what chocolate is to others so I was in heaven. Two days was definitely not enough as I want to read all the greeting cards, look through all the albums and take in all the booth designs. I realized I either have to be more efficient or stay longer. I will definitely forgo efficiency in this instance and opt to stay longer next year. Not only are there hundreds of booths but there are seminars and classes as well.

Did you pick a favorite vendor?

That’s like picking a favorite child. There are just so many that I love. Luckily I have lots of love to give and will continue to add more lines to the shop. It was a treat to meet a few of my favorites like afavorite designs and Spark Letterpress love. The design work coming from both of these shops is so clever and fun. I am excited about the things we will be getting in from Rifle Paper Co., Byrd and Bleecker, Chewing the Cud ,Wiley Valentine and several more.

Usually trade shows forecast retail trends. What trends to you see in our near future?

There were lots of animals. With four dogs at home, I am a sucker for anything with an animal. Birds have been big but we will be getting in some things with other critters as well.

Did you meet or see anyone influential in the design world?

I probably swooned a little too much when I met the head of russell + hazel. Everyone knows I have been obsessed with this line for years so meeting Chris Plantan was great fun. Not only is Chris a talented designer and business woman but she is a really nice person. We went to a bridal seminar and heard Darcy Miller, the editor of Martha Stewart Weddings, speak. We also met the charming French artist, Izak, who did all the hip and fun illustrations for Byrd and Bleecker’s new paper line. He’s done illustrations for big names like Henri Bendel too. While these are just a few of the big names, all the artists are worthy of being recognized. It is such a joy to talk to these people who LOVE what they do.

What did you order for Chirps and Cheers that you can’t wait to put on the shelves?

Oh my goodness….I can’t wait for it all to come. Besides a smattering of great cards and boxed notes and a few more albums, we will be getting some fun office boxes, computer bags, handmade wooden recipe boxes, durable canvas totes, initial sachets, eco-friendly fabric wraps that make great scarves, and oh so much more.

NYC in OKC - Gretta Sloane

Customer service can make or break a purchase. Too snobby, too nicey-nice, too preoccupied, too uninterested, too condescending... Although the perfect customer/store employee interaction is difficult to achieve, it is essential in creating a store experience that customers keep returning to.

Gretta Sloane in Nichols Hills Plaza has found the magic key to creating loyal customers. When I stepped into the store yesterday afternoon, I overheard Gretta Sloane's main salesperson, Jen, discussing birthday cakes with a little girl whose mom was buying an outfit. It wasn't a surprise for Jen to later tell me, "When I see a new piece arrive, I know exactly who will love it."

Being an exclusive retailer of every designer that they sell also assists in creating an atmosphere where the customer is special—If you purchase a dress at Gretta Sloane, you are one of a select few in the state to own that dress. I like that.

Light, airy summer tunics and dresses caught my attention in the window.

I usually focus my articles around fashionable finds and shopping features. However, my friend, Bryan Sloan, recommended that I get properly fit in a pair of running shoes at Red Coyote. Bryan writes a running blog and runs in races all over. Also, he's a pretty cool guy.

Red Coyote (5800 N Classen, OKC, OK) opened in Classen Curve almost 2 months ago. Co-owners, John and Burke, feature the only slow-motion video gait analysis in the state of Oklahoma. I decided to give this technology a whirl.

A few pieces of information about me first:

I am not a runner.
I danced (ballet, jazz, pom, etc...) for about 15 years, thus, I have a slight case of dancer's turnout.
I am drawn to athletic shoes for their cuteness factor rather than their functionality.

I head into Red Coyote.

The Red Coyote greets me!

Here's how the gait analysis works. You run barefoot on a treadmill & a camera records your foot movement. Then, the video is slowed down to analyze different parts of your foot and when they are making contact with the ground.

Here's the camera located behind the treadmill.

I run for a few minutes, then we start looking at my video footage.

It appears that I am a mild over-pronator. My foot rolls slightly inward as a stride.

Red Coyote divides their shoes by type (racing, stability, neutral, motion control) so that after your analysis, it's easy to decide which models will be a good fit for your gait type.

I try out several models of stability shoes, a recommendation based on my analysis.

For fun, I also tried on a pair of training shoes, the Newton "Stability." These shoes helps train more efficient running habits. Check out the sole:

I run down the sidewalk in each pair & narrow it down to the Nike and Mizuno models. Finally, the Mizuno's win.

I focused mainly on shoes and products for myself, however Red Coyote has an exceptional selection of gear for men also.

I was excited that I never felt like I had to decide between fashion and comfort. All of the shoes I tried were stylish!

The most important thing I learned is that "there isn't a best running shoe — only a best running shoe for you."

On a side note, Red Coyote is a welcome addition to Classen Curve. I hope this is the first of many articles on the stores in Classen Curve.

Pippin+Pearl Grand Opening Extravaganza!

Once upon a time, there was a little boy named Pippin. He wandered and wandered and wandered until a beautiful ocean came into view. The water was so clear that he could see straight to the bottom. An oyster!

He dove in (clothes and all) and retrieved the oyster. As soon as he reached the shoreline, the oyster popped open, unprovoked, and revealed a beautiful pearl. Thus, Pippin and Pearl.

Actually, that's not a real event (I know... I had you).
That's not even a fictional story (at least not until right now).

The real story is about three awesome chicks and their handmade inspirations—
Erin Cooper, Lanie Barrett, and Jennifer Woods are the real Pippin and Pearl.

Located inside Mister Rabbit (2411 N Guernsey Ave, OKC, OK),
Pippin + Pearl showcases a variety of handmade, re-made, locally-made items for just about anyone. Not only do they feature their own work, they accept outside artists as well. Information about selling your products in Pippin & Pearl is available on their website.

The official Grand Opening event occurs this Saturday. There will be quite a shindig! It is a must attend — even for the kids.

Art for Everyone

A question was posed to me several months ago: "Can art galleries be a member of Allioppe?"

Allioppe is all about promoting locally-owned stores, introducing new local designers and helping tourists find a fulfilling shopping experience. An art gallery is like a small retail store on so many levels... locally owned, individual artists (some local), a great attraction for tourists, so I decided, "Sure, art galleries would be great on Allioppe!"

I'm embarrassed to admit that I stopped by the Howell Gallery (6432 N. Western, OKC, OK) over a month ago to check out their artwork and have yet to get a blog post up about it. *Some of these pieces I feature may not still be available for purchase since I am so late getting this posted.

Visiting the Howell Gallery is not what I expected. I expected a snooty curator, pieces that were unattainable and artwork that I didn't understand.

I was wrong on all three levels.

I was greeted by Laura, a friendly gallery director and an obvious art lover. She showed me around the warm & cozy gallery.

With each piece that I walked by, I started the understand the range of artwork available. I couldn't stop taking photos the entire time I was there.

Although I'm a good shopper (sometimes too good), I sometimes forget to think about shopping for a good cause. Thanks to Shop Good, I don't have to. For every product sold at Shop Good, a portion of the proceeds goes towards a monthly community development project.

SHOP GOOD also sells items that individually help a good cause.

Like these SSEKOS sandals.

These are made by women in Uganda who use profits from the sandals to pay for their education. That's pretty neat.

I couldn't be more excited to announce Allioppe's next event, the Allioppe Shoppe Crawl during Live on the Plaza! May 14, 7 pm-11pm, Plaza District, Oklahoma City.

A Shoppe Crawl is very similar to a pub crawl, except that it revolves around an activity much more important than drinking... shopping!

Our first Shoppe Crawl will occur during the Plaza District's monthly Live on the Plaza event. Stores in the Plaza District include: Velvet Monkey Vintage, Collected Thread, DNA Galleries, Shop Good, Curious and Curiouser, Bad Granny's Bazaar, Warpaint Clothing Company and Juju Gallery.

BoneDust Cowgirl

For weeks, I had anxiously awaited the arrival of BoneDust Cowgirl back to Oklahoma City. I perused their website. I read their tweets. And, when stopped by this afternoon, I had expectations.

I was blown away.

They have some seriously good stuff.

Hearty, authentic, dramatic, good stuff.

Bonedust is a collaboration of artists Jayme Daniel and James Stephens. Jayme does stuff like this:

I learned so much this afternoon chatting with James. If you have time to listen to him talk about his passion for carving and artistry, do it. Our conversations made me remember why I do this website.

Cobblestone - a fun shopping experience

During my Italy trip last spring, I stumbled many times. Literally. Did you know that stilettos and cobblestone walkways don't mix? Well, they don't.

Thankfully, my shopping experience at our very own Cobblestone in Bethany, is a different story... With this Spring season's trends - shopping is more like a walk in the park.

I saw hints of a "nesting" theme...birds and mosses and patterns reminiscent of vintage lattice... I am channeling Louisa May Alcott and Emily Dickinson right now.

Cobblestone also features Prairie Gypsies gourmet food products, candles, jewelry, made-to-order notepads and a variety of accessories for your home.

As a longtime resident of Oklahoma City, I have been excited to see the renewed interest in some of OKC's historical areas. Restaurants, bars, coffee shops, recreational areas, hair salons... these are all nice improvements to see in any district, however, what I love is retail.

Located next to Sara Sara Cupcakes & Iguana Lounge on NW 9th Street, BD Home recently opened in the Automobile Alley area.

They carry furniture and accessories from a bunch of cool modern designers like Knoll, 18 Karat, Voluspa, Herman Miller, Innermost, and Chilewich (just to name a few...).

I have been stopping by some great stores in OKC today. Maybe it's the weather, but I have encountered some sweet owners and merchandise.

It was my first time to visit Consortium on N. Western. They had a great selection of tops and jeans, not to mention a fab display of Belstaff Motorcycle jackets.

I also meandered down to Main Street in Bethany, making visits to Cedarburg Square (on N College), Cobblestone, and Mariposa. Good thing I parked and walked to each of these stores, it will help me burn off my mid-morning snack: the divine Thumbprint cookies from Clark's Pastries (also on Main Street).

Look forward to seeing some new additions to Allioppe as I make my way to every store in OKC. Yes, this is a threat.

Custom TOMS @ Shoetopia

When Shoetopia sent a tweet out last week about custom painted Toms, I knew I was overdue for a stop at my favorite Norman Shoe Store. A display of the latest Toms greeted me through the front window on Boyd Street. Upon further investigation, I found these:

What a great Christmas idea for a close friend? The nice touch is that you are actually giving two gifts. Toms philosophy states that for every pair of Toms sold, they give a pair to a child in need.

The key to creating a custom design on a pair of Toms is to use acrylic waterproof fabric paint. Personally, I also suggest Scotchguard to protect any canvas or fabric shoes from stains (I would spray on after your designs have been painted).

Toms shoes has a special section of their website dedicated to "Style Your Sole." If anyone hosts a Style Your Sole Holiday party, I want an invitation!

Exciting things have been happening on Allioppe. Unfortunately, I have failed to let you know about them. For starters, we have two fantistic additons to the Allioppe boutique line-up. Welcome Lou Lou & Mine!

Lou Lou is a bright little shoppe on Lovers Lane. I couldn't have been more pleased to stumble in on one of my last visits to Dallas. I was most impressed with their great selection of shoes. Shoes for work...check. Shoes for play... check. Shoes to make your bridesmaids' dress bearable... check. Add Lou Lou as a preferred shoppe immediately...check!

Just a few steps down Lovers Lane, you'll find Mine. If there is ever a shoppe with a perfectly chosen name... this is it. Because, seriously, I want everything in this store to be MINE! Although they are still working on their Allioppe profile, their website has a few great shots of the shoppe & a partial listing of the designers they carry. Add them as a preferred shoppe too!

Again, I am so thrilled at the new Shoppe additions!

Guest bedroom - let's talk walls.

Because I don't have anything going on in my life already, I have decided to undertake the redecoration of my guest bedroom. We are talking walls, light fixtures, bedding, curtains, & accessories. So, basically everything.

I am, however, pulling a few pieces from other parts of my house. In case you don't have the extensive crap in your house that I have, I will be giving local suggestions that can help you handle your own redecorating project.

Today: walls.

Ketch Design Center. (44th & N. Western, OKC) They offer a bunch of cool services & fabrics & things, but more importantly they have a great selection of wallpaper! I'm not using any in my guest room redecorate, but, in my fabulous dream world... I would wallpaper everything!

Paint. Munger Paint (50th & N. Macarthur, OKC) Like Ketch, they offer wallpaper and cool things, but more importantly, they have very high quality paint. Rumor has it that they can create aerosol paint in just about any color! I will be talking to them about a brick red for my night stands in the guest room remodel.

Several months ago, during a Northpark Mall (OKC) sidewalk sale, I learned that Red Fox Paperie would be moving. At first, I was scared... What if they moved too far? What if I couldn't find them? What if I couldn't feed my greeting card addiction?!?!

Well, be relieved to know that Red Fox Paperie moved to an easily accessible location in the North Penn Plaza near Penn Square Mall. I took a peek at their new spot last week & it's fab!

Their Grand Opening celebration is Thursday, September 17th from 5:00-8:00 pm. It's rumored that there will be giveaways, libations, & foxy treats. Love it! What I love even more is that a portion of the proceeds from stationery sales will benefit Oklahoma Literacy.

I had been feeling the need to purchase an investment item. No, I'm not talking Roth IRAs or mutual funds here... I am, however, talking these super sweet boots:

Meet the new member of my family. Cole Haan Air Petra Tall Boot in Sequoia Patent. Until now, I haven't owned a pair of Cole Haan's since the 1st grade. I think it was time again. What do you think?

While meandering through 50 Penn Place (which is where I bought Cole), I was reminded of Route 66, a fierce eco-chic boutique. From homemade soaps to mason-jar recycled bracelets to Nanette Lepore to backpacks made from tires to license plate photo albums. If you are having a whimsical moment, stop into Route 66. I thoroughly enjoyed my 40 minute distraction at Route 66 and left thinking about how I could make used dryer sheets into a hair accessory.

Dallas shopping feature - Indigo 1745

As a child, I subconsciously thought Indigo was an outlier in the Roy G. Biv sequence. I had never heard of it before my 2nd grade class on rainbows. As an adult, I realize that being an outlier is a pretty cool thing. Speaking of cool outliers... Indigo 1745 in the Bishop Arts District is a very cool outlier.

Besides an exceptional selection of clothes, they also carry several lines of denim, tees, accessories and lots of other creative pieces.

The first Thursday of every month, the Bishop Arts District hosts their monthly wine walk, I encourage you to visit during this event and check out Indigo 1745.

Fortune Denim is the latest denim brand that I've had the pleasure of wearing. And, I wasn't kidding in the title, each pair of Fortune Denim jeans comes with a fortune right inside the waistband.

In August, Fortune Denim is featuring several of their best designs. The Anna (in Dynasty wash) creates a long, lean silhouette with some great detailing at the waistline.

Another feature for August is the Renee cut in the raw wash. This is a favorite style of mine - it can make even me feel tall and runway- worthy (and, I'm 5'2"- those are some powerful jeans...). Guarantee yourself some good luck and wear a pair.

Shadow Shields

So, I know you have been waiting to hear what the "invention that you wished you had invented" is... let me set the stage.

You have a hot date with mr. big and you decide to glam it up with a smokey eye and a hot little dress. After a nice primer and a quality shadow, your eyelids look amazing. However, what's that under your eye? SHADOW FALLOUT!!

Prevention: add the Shadow Shield & you're good to go.

These neat little strips stick right under your eye before applying shadow. When you're finished, remove the shield and reveal a clean under-eye.

Now, what a neat invention!

The Balm at the Bar

In my most recent excursion to the MakeUp Bar, I purchased a few products that I don't know how I ever lived without. The Balm "Hot Mama shadow/blush" and "Mary Lou-Manizer."

I use Hot Mama blush every day. I am loving it, and I think it got me an extra few french fries in the hot line yesterday. As far as the Luminizer goes, it's the best prescription to brighten my skin after a long day of work.

Not only do I love all of the products by The Balm because of their creative names and cheeky taglines, but they are easy on the budget. Each product has multiple uses too!

Recently, I've been having a love affair with the color orange. I might splash a neutral outfit with an orange accessory or go all out head-to-toe.
