It's no secret that I'm a big Bloc Party fan. Innovative, forward thinking and always with one eye on the dancefloor. Perfect for Shoplifters' clubnight

So you can imagine how quickly Mr credit card came out of the wallet when BP announced they're releasing a new album. In two days. F*ck yeah.

The details are all at blocparty.com and you can purchase a high quality MP3 version for just £5 or the CD version for £8 here

The band are also going to make The Killers look like the pile of crap they are at Leeds this weekend as they 'headline' the final night of the festival. (Do you wanna hear the filler from 'Sam's Town' or burn down a portaloo to the soundtrack of Gallows?)

So to celebrate, let's have some of best Bloc related remix shizz from the past few years.

MP3 We're playing the Revolution bar on Oxford Rd from 1pm - 3pm which means two things:

1) We'll be drinking bison vodka cocktails by 1:05pm
2) We'll be ignoring the early start time and rolling out the beats from the get go.

Tickets are a tenner from the box office on Oxford Rd and for your money you'll see hundreds of DJs, bands, breakdancers, graffiti artists and loads more.

Come see.

MP3 War - Low Rider (DJ Kue Remix)

#25: Recent Decents

Right the sun's out in Manchester, and hopefully where you're ready this as well. Here's a quick round up of some goodies rocking the Shoplifters stereo - some old, mostly new, all well worth your attention.

Let us know which you love and hate. It's good to talk...

First up it's the Stevie-Nicks-reincarnate greatness of Ladyhawke. Watched the Camden Crawl wet themselves over her last month and this Van She remix takes things to another level. Quality.

MP3 Ladyhawke - Back Of The Van (Van She Tech Turbo Fire Engine Remix)

Also on the XX chromosome theme, there's a tasty Kylie remix of 'Heart Beat Rock' doing the rounds featuring a fruity insert from Spank Rock. Good beat, but sounds familiar. Anyone?

MP3 Kylie feat. Spank Rock - Heart Beat Rock (Benny Blanco Remix)

And, despite posting about this tune before, this week it's more than likely to top the pop charts today in the UK and, crucially, it's not a pile of shit. An achievement I'm sure you'll agree... The Burns remix of Wiley's smash smooths things out with some nice Parisian synth work.

MP3 Wiley - Wearin My Rolex (Burns Remix)

The hugely underrated Infadels return with a new LP 'Universe In Reverse' two years after their debut. The second single from the album is going to be 'Free Things For Poor People' (June 23, Wall Of Sound) and there's some great remixes including this one from Alex Metric. Designed to be played loud.

MP3 Infadels - Free Things For Poor People (Alex Metric Remix)

And finally one of the godfathers of shameless guilty pleasure bootlegging, Go Home Productions, releases an album 'Spliced Krispies' this month. In his own words, "This album was conceived and created during April 2008. It basically came about after I needed a break from writing / recording original tracks for the 'Kamikaze Runway' album...

"Must admit that I had a lot of fun putting this together. No limitations or pandering to artists / record labels desires, just went headfirst into screwing around with some favourite songs and seeing what turned up."

MP3 Go Home Productions - Grandstand Supreme

Download the whole album for free here

Hold steady
JC

#24: Tonight's The Night...

As the news of Bloggerpalooza sweeps the globe, from 6pm today you should click here to listen and see (yikes!) Strictly Kev's 'History Of Cut-Up' that appeared originally as a Superchunk on Xfm's The Remix show.

Appearing under a number of different names including 'Raiding The 20th Century', Kev's mix took every important part of remixing, sampling and mixing and condensed into a manageable 40 minutes.

As the below article explains "Shortly afterwards he read Paul Morley's recently published book 'Words & Music' and was amazed that certain chapters mirrored parts of his mix...

After months of further research he tracked Morley down and they recorded passages from 'Words & Music' specially for [a new version of the mix]"

If you've never heard this hour-long track, I urge you to download it from the link below and listen on headphones. It's an amazing piece of work that encapsulates every building block of Shoplifters' foundations.

Simply a work of genius.

Read more, listen and get the full tracklisting here

MP3 Strictly Kev - Raiding The 20th Century

Hold steady
JC

#19: "Usually Drink, Usually Dance..."

Wiley's back with a quality single, 'Rolex', and hot on its heels is this amazing piece of video remix mash-up action.

When you think about it's so obvious. Live. Shoplifters style.

First up is Estelle which reminded me I've been looking for an excuse to post about the UK's number one. Kano's stepped in for Kanye but was given approx half a second to flow, and meanwhile, here's the Danger! remix of 'American Boy'. Rage Against The Machine and Metallica? Quality.

This being Shoplifters, we're talking covers and remixes so here goes.

Rage released a whole album of covers back in 2000 entitled 'Renegades Of Funk'. And it was damn good too.

However, remixes of the band vary in quality, and, to be honest, never seem to really match the band's combination of aggression and down right dancibility. Regardless, here's Rage's cover of Cypress Hill's 'How I Could Just Kill A Man' featuring the rap legends on guest vocals and Mr Oizo's remix of 'Killing In The Name'... Like I said, it's good but won't ever match the original.

MP3 Rage Against The Machine - How I Could Just Kill A Man (live feat. Cypress Hill) (Cypress Hill cover)

MP3 Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name (Mr Oizo Remix)

Next up we have Metallica. A band no stranger to cover versions with their 1998 albu m 'Garage Inc.', it's a quality collection so here's one of the stand-out tracks So What?. Note: Originally by the Anti-Nowhere League, if you find offensive words, erm, offensive, maybe steer clear of this one.

MP3 Metallica - So What? (Anti-Nowhere League cover)

And finally, the turkey of the bunch, The Killers. In between these two, the band look like they were booked by accident but in true turd polishing fashion, Jacque Le Cont's 'Mr Brightside' remix still stands up as high as it ever could. Stop propping up the bar moaning and dance, you idiot....

MP3 The Killers - Mr Brightside (Thin White Duke Remix)

Hold steady,
JC

#16: March Mixtape!

OK, so I know it's nearly April, but here's our mixtape for March. This time, it's folky sort Adem, who tackles Aphex Twins rather acidic 'To Cure a Weakling Child'. And like Get Capes cover, this doesn't disappoint, offering a genuine real insight into the subtleties of the track.

I can't claim the credit for this track, as it was James over at Yer Mam! who let this go yesterday. Terrifyingly so, in fact.

Regardless, alongside their own synth-tinged beats (download for free and check out a great interview at Ohh! Lots of tasty loops, breakdowns and the afore mentioned synths.

And while we're on a Dizzee tip, I've also uploaded my other recent favourite Rascal remix; The DJ Beware treatment of 'Pussyole'.

Last night Xfm's John Kennedy reminded me of Dizzee's first Xfm session and interview in which he allegedly spent most of the time with his hands down his pants.

I suggest you adopt the same stance when checking out these two beauties

MP3 Dizzee Rascal - Youngstar (Futurecop! Not only were we treated to 6 weeks of build up in the magazine itself, but most of the press latched onto it being a hipper and more relevant version of the Brits, yet in all actuality it proved to be pretty much the same stuff winning similar awards.

As part of this almighty annual dick-slap, a cover mount has graced the magazine featuring cover versions of popular songs (the Manics doing 'Umbrella'!) which while a little obvious, there's some good stuff to be found. Take this version of Justice's 'D.A.N.C.E': Just when you thought you couldn't stomach any more remixes of this tune, Emo-folkster Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly has turned one of the most loop-tastic ace versions of a track I've heard in fucking ages. Yes, it's THAT good. And I'm being serious too. "Ready for the Floor" in it's original form sounded more scary than I thought: Apparently Kylie had cast it off, but the 'Chip thought it was so good they kept it for themselves.

While I stand by my initial opinion, I must admit to the remixes growing on me. The Jesse Rose remix is good, the extended mix is too (until the vocal kicks in anyway), and I've played the Soulwax remix out quite a few times and it's always gone down well. And now, I find a new, smooooooooooth version that Hot Chip themselves have done, and while it's strange, it's actually quite good.

Not always does a new version of a track sound better, but certainly in this case it proves you can indeed polish (or redesign) a turd.
