The Bloomfield Development Corporation has been designated as an accredited National Main Street Program for meeting the commercial district revitalization performance standards set by the National Trust Main Street Center. Each year, the National Trust and its partners announce the list of accredited Main Street programs that have built strong revitalization organizations and demonstrate their ability in using the Main Street Four-Point Approach methodology for strengthening their local economy and protecting their historic buildings.

“We congratulate this year’s nationally accredited Main Street programs for meeting our established performance standards,” says Doug Loescher, director of the National Trust Main Street Center. “Accredited Main Street programs are meeting the challenges of the recession head on and are successfully using a focused, comprehensive revitalization strategy to keep their communities vibrant and sustainable.”

The organization’s performance is annually evaluated by Mainstreets Pittsburgh, which works in partnership with the National Trust Main Street Center to identify the local programs that meet 10 performance standards. These standards set the benchmarks for measuring an individual Main Street program’s application of the Main Street Four-Point Approach to commercial district revitalization. Evaluation criteria determines the communities that are building comprehensive and sustainable revitalization efforts and include standards such as development a mission, fostering strong public-private partnerships, securing an operating budget, tracking economic progress and preserving historic buildings. For more information on the national program accreditation program, visit www.preservationnation.org/main-street.

Congratulations on the achievements of the Bloomfield Development Corporation. For information on activities or to become a volunteer, please contact Karla Owens, Executive Director, or Terry Aiello, Mainstreet Manager at 412-687-9346.

Last week, Councilman Bill Peduto introduced legislation that will allow restaurants, grocery stores, cafés, or delis to cook outside on the sidewalk. This will allow businesses in Bloomfield like Donatelli’s to continue a tradition of outdoor cooking, and hopefully encourage more businesses to come out as well.

416.15 (a): Definition
As used herein includes any restaurant, grocery store, café, or deli that wishes to use the public sidewalk for the purposes of outdoor cooking and other related foodservice. Outdoor cooking includes, but is not limited to outdoor grilling. Related foodservice includes selling, sampling, and displaying of food cooked / prepared outside of the business premises.
Tables & chairs require a separate sidewalk café permit.

The bill comes up for a preliminary vote tomorrow, and we would like Bloomfield business owners to come support the bill in Council Chambers, located on the Fifth Floor of the City-County Building at 414 Grant Street. The Standing Committees Meeting begins at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.

On Thursday, July 29, from 7:00–8:30 p.m., Councilman Patrick Dowd’s office will be hosting a panel discussion at the Teamsters Temple in Lawrenceville regarding Marcellus Shale drilling and its impact on the urban environment. Doors open at 6:30 for community members and leaders to explore and discover information at a variety of organizational tables.

To date, almost 60 property owners in District 7 have signed away the mineral rights to their properties to Marcellus Shale drillers. Councilman Dowd’s office is responding by creating legislation that will respect the rights of property owners and businesses while protecting our valuable City resources including waterways, riverfronts, street infrastructure and the health and well-being of community members.

Should you have any further questions, please contact Councilman Dowd or his staff at 412.255.2140 or district7@city.pittsburgh.pa.us.
