On Thursday, July 29, from 7:00–8:30 p.m., Councilman Patrick Dowd’s office will be hosting a panel discussion at the Teamsters Temple in Lawrenceville regarding Marcellus Shale drilling and its impact on the urban environment. Doors open at 6:30 for community members and leaders to explore and discover information at a variety of organizational tables.

To date, almost 60 property owners in District 7 have signed away the mineral rights to their properties to Marcellus Shale drillers. Councilman Dowd’s office is responding by creating legislation that will respect the rights of property owners and businesses while protecting our valuable City resources including waterways, riverfronts, street infrastructure and the health and well-being of community members.

Should you have any further questions, please contact Councilman Dowd or his staff at 412.255.2140 or district7@city.pittsburgh.pa.us.

On the morning of July 10, twenty-eight Bloomfield Development Corporation volunteers picked up litter, cigarette butts and other trash along Liberty Avenue’s Main Street. Along with Bloomfield Landscaping volunteers, they also planted greenery and cleaned and weeded the tree beds. We realize that there are a lot of other things these volunteers could be doing on a beautiful Saturday morning, but we couldn’t do these cleanups without your help.

The volunteers and the BDC want to thank Grasso Roberto for donating coffee, and Angelo’s Pizzeria for donating pizza and soft drinks for lunch.

We are planning the next Clean Sweep to prepare for Little Italy Days. Until then, everyone can do their part by disposing of their litter and cigarettes responsibly. For more information on volunteering for BDC cleanups or Little Italy Days, contact Terry Aiello by email or 412.687.9346.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl announced the creation of the City’s first-ever Civic Leadership Academy, a free 10-week course designed to educate residents about local government in the City of Pittsburgh.

Beginning Sept. 14 and ending Nov. 16, participants will attend weekly sessions focusing on different City departments and the services they provide to make for a safer, more livable City. City directors will develop their sessions with tours, hands-on demonstrations and fun activities to provide an up-close and personal view of how their department helps to operate the City.

“This unique program provides interested residents the opportunity to learn how their local government operates to improve their communities.” said Mayor Ravenstahl, “It is our hope that participants will take the knowledge acquired from this program to inspire them to become more informed, effective community and municipal leaders.”

The program consists of 10 consecutive sessions on Tuesday evenings from 6–8 p.m. Session topics include city organization and vision; budgeting processes; city planning and economic development; public works and parks services; the protection of water and rivers; public safety efforts, and more. After the sessions, the Mayor will lead a graduation ceremony where participants will be awarded certificates.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and live within Pittsburgh City limits and/or be a business owner who operates a business within Pittsburgh City limits. Applications are due by 5 p.m., July 30, 2010. For more information and to apply for the Civic Leadership Academy visit www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us. The application is available at the top of the homepage.

The Mayor issued the proposed outlines of a 50-year lease agreement today. Below are charts from his plan that show the rate increases for parking garages and street meters.

There will be new enforceable hours from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1:00–10:00 p.m. on Sunday. The plan calls for Bloomfield’s hourly parking rate to increase to $2.00 per hour by October 2014.

Please contact the Mayor’s office with your feedback on this plan.
