The Berlin, Maryland Chamber of Commerce proudly announces the launch of their Hearts for Heroes campaign. Downtown area businesses will display heart decorations in their windows and around their workplace as a show of support to our local heroes and to offer something special for customers during the holiday weekend of Valentines Day and Presidents Day, February 12 through 15.

Of course, today’s heroes include but are not limited to Healthcare workers, Teachers, Grocery Store Clerks, Firefighters, Police, EMTs, Food Service and Retail Workers, and many others, especially our visitors and customers who have patiently followed CDC guidelines and loyally continued to safely shop local.

Berlin Intermediate School students will also provide colorful “HEARTWORK” for businesses to use as decorations.

Head into Ocean City, MD, and raise money for local healthcare heroes with the Atlantic General Hospital’s 27th Annual Penguin Swim!

The Penguin Swim is a fun annual event to support Atlantic General Hospital, a not-for-profit organization. Each year, hundreds of penguins raise funds to help the hospital provide the excellent quality care our community depends on, culminating in a swim in the Atlantic Ocean on New Year’s Day. For the 2021 swim, the event area will extend from 91^st Street to 94^th Street to allow for social distancing. Face coverings are required for penguins and spectators.

The AGH Penguin Swim will be held on Friday, January 1, 2021 at 1 pm.

Wicomico County Recreation & Parks is hosting a virtual Gingerbread House Competition! Enter your homemade gingerbread house via the virtual Facebook event at http://www.facebook.com/WicomicoRec.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: children, adult, and family. The children’s prize includes a Salisbury Zoo gift package and a Specific Gravity gift card. The Art League of Ocean City has launched two programs that will benefit Diakonia and the Worcester County community.

The Empty Bowl Project, a benefit for the Diakonia food pantry and the programs of the Art League, is being celebrated locally with the sale of 150 handmade pottery bowls for $25. Bowls are available for purchase at the Ocean City Center for the Arts and also online at www.biddingowl.com/ArtLeagueOfOceanCity.

The Empty Bowl Project is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger and a unique opportunity to use art in a way that helps the community. The project is a collaborative effort between the Art League and Diakonia to raise awareness and funds for hunger through creative engagement. Sponsors are First Shore Federal Bank and Shore United Bank.

The Art League is also collecting coats that will be passed on to Diakonia for their annual coat drive. Both new and used coats are welcomed in children’s and adult sizes, but coats should be clean and in good condition. Coats may be dropped off at the Arts Center on 94th St.

The Art League will accept bowl purchases and coat donations at the Ocean City Center for the Arts, 502 94^th St. bayside, during normal business hours: Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

The Ocean City Center for the Arts at 502 94^th Street is the home of the Art League of Ocean City, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the Ocean City area through education, exhibits, scholarships, programs and community art events.  The arts center is supported by memberships, corporate and civic funding, donations and sales of art.

The Salisbury Maryland Kennel Club Dog Show will take place at the Wicomico Civic Center on Friday, Nov. 6-Sunday, Nov. 8.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines, this year’s show will not be open to the public. There will be health and safety protocols for those participating in the show, including daily health screenings, masks, and social distancing.

For the safety of show participants and their dogs, a portion of Glen Avenue in front of the Civic Center will close each day of the event from 7 a.m.-9 p.m.

The event will feature three all-breed dog shows, two obedience trials, and two rally trials. For more information, contact the Salisbury Maryland Kennel Club at 410-548-2110.

It’s time to clean up our bays! Maryland Coastal Bay Program held its inaugural Marine Debris Plunder last Saturday, October 10th, yielding results beyond expectations!

With over 100 volunteers participating in a social distancing bay clean-up event held by land and by sea, in which participants collected 1.8 tons of trash.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled with the event turnout,” said MCBP Outreach and Marketing Coordinator Sandi Smith. “Typically clean-ups are the day of and folks come out, register and go, but since clean-up turnouts are usually close to 100 coming in the day of registration, we couldn’t conduct business as usual and required people to register in advance. Getting advanced commitments are always a little tricky.”

Coastal Bays recruited a Jack Sparrow impersonator, Trey Emmerson, to conduct a virtual captain’s meeting and then emcee at the weigh-in with D.J. Wax. Captain Jack with his Theta Chi pirates from Salisbury University greeted participants to grab their loot from vehicles and boats and weigh it for competition awards.

As this is an inaugural event, Coastal Bays is still working out the awards as things did no go as anticipated and the competition amongst some of the competitors was fierce and admirably productive in removing debris from the bays.

“Everyone was a winner,” remarked Smith, “each team that brought their loot exclaimed their excitement and eagerness to participate in another event, which we are planning on for next year.”

This event was held during crabbing season so those that conducted their search by sea were provided with specific instructions and the Natural Resource Police was out to make sure live traps were not tampered. There was no question that every trap collected was a ghost pot. Coordinates were provided to a few that were in question and folks will be going out next weekend to confirm if they are live or ghost.

Highlights include the fierce friendly competition amongst two family teams. The Odachowskis, team Water Damage, and the Howells, team Howells. Each were determined to take first for the most weight. Both teams charged through the waters on boat making three separate trips, with their respective sons at the helm. The Odachowskis were in the lead until the very end of the day when the Howells pulled in with a 350-pound piece of metal discovered under the Route 90 bridge. The Odachowskis hands down found the most ghost pots.

The Ocean City Power Squadron had two teams and Ocean Pines Environment and Natural Assets Committee had a team that pulled additional abandoned pots. Special mention goes out to the Theta Chi Brothers and Environmental Club at Salisbury University as they were assigned a very nasty area and plundered with great success. And the Ramnarian family was on a mission pulling several large tires out of St. Martin River. Team Depot, staff from Home Depot, also pulled several ghost pots.

Bluewater Properties and Pure Lure co-sponsored the event and recruited a large on land crew, and along with several family teams, pillaged the land yielding a ton of debris.

This event was made possible through grant funding from Maryland Forever, Keep Maryland Beautiful. A second annual will be announced next year as this event is focused around low tide times. The Ocean City Life Saving Station Museum is gearing up for another fall season. Celebrating History Week through October 16th, the museum will offer free admission to all Eastern Shore locals. History Week a week that offers a variety of events and activities that highlight the town’s unique cultural heritage.

If you live on the Delmarva peninsula, stop by and enjoy the museum free of charge. Capture the perfect family photo with our display of fall flowers, pumpkins, and hay located on the boardwalk in front of our shark display and anchor. Free programs will be offered every day at 1 p.m., as the museum takes a close look at the equipment that was used by the United States Life-Saving Service to conduct a rescue. Programs will be held inside the museum’s boat room.

A list of upcoming History Week events listed below:

1. On Saturday, October 10th from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. author Anna Dolle Bushnell will be signing her new book Dolle’s Candyland, Inc. Bushnell’s book describes the history of her long-standing family run business.
2. On Sunday, October 11th at 1 p.m., the museum will host an hour-long live broadcast Pieces of Our Past, sharing several never before seen artifacts. Pieces of Our Past is a fundraiser that will help strengthen and grow the George and Suzanne Hurley Memorial Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is open to Stephen Decatur High School graduates who plan on furthering their education at Salisbury University, Wor-Wic Community College, or UMES. “Some of the artifacts we will be showcasing are just as unique as they are old,” said curator Sandy Hurley. “A wooden leg, original rocking chairs from the Commander hotel, and a 1940s chocolate bar in the shape of a whiskey bottle are just a few items you will get the chance to see and learn about.”
3. On October 12th at 1 p.m., the Ocean City Life Saving Station Museum is partnering with Worcester County Library to bring you a special tour of the museum and a book discussion of In the Heart of the Sea.
4. On October 13th at 5:30 p.m. the Worcester County Library will be streaming the storm of 1962 movie. This iconic storm swept the Atlantic coast forever altering the island’s landscape. Last but not least we invite you to nominate someone for our annual spirit award! Do you know someone who has helped preserve local history? Help Atlantic General Hospital raise money for the Atlantic General Hospital Foundation!

The organizers of the 2020 Robert E. Warfield Memorial Golf Tournament, Atlantic General Hospital’s Fall Golf Classic, have created two new ‘fun’raisers that are open to the public.

The community has the opportunity to purchase a golf ball that will be part of a payload dropped by helicopter over a target placed on the driving range at Ocean City Golf Club. The ball closest to the target wins. Two divisions available – and two winners.

Entrants for the Big Bucks Raffle and the Drop Zone golf ball drop need not be present to win. Participation in the golf tournament is not required. The Drop Zone event will be captured with Facebook Live on the Atlantic General Hospital Foundation’s Facebook page.

Meet 4-year-old Ailani!

On March 2nd, 2019, Ailani Myers, a month shy of her 3rd birthday, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (MLL-rearranged). Ailani was in Texas visiting family when she became ill. Her treatment was started at Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center during which many medical tests and procedures to include blood transfusions, spinal taps, steroid treatments, and chemotherapy were performed.

At this point, Ailani did not respond well enough to chemotherapy so she was transferred to Johns Hopkins Children’s in Baltimore for more aggressive treatment. Her oncology team is recommending she receive a bone marrow transplant within a matter of a few weeks.

Ailani, being mixed race, has a very poor chance of finding a good donor match. Her father is a Chief Warrant Officer in the Navy and mom is recently retired, Chief Petty Officer. Without a match on the registry, the Doctor’s decision to have her dad be her donor. For over a year she was doing well with only 3 rounds of chemo left to go and that’s when they got the news that she had relapsed.

The Salvation Army of the Lower Eastern Shore is now registering children for its annual Angel Tree program. This program helps to provide new clothing and toys for children ages birth to 14-years, from low-income families.

To register, be sure that you have the following documents available

1. Valid email address.
2. Proof of address.
3. Current photo identification for the applicant.
4. Proof of birthdate for all children being registered.
5. Proof of household income.

Each family will be screened to verify their needs. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, registration will be done “contactless” through phone appointments and email.

Once a child has been registered as an “Angel,” The Salvation Army makes a promise to provide Christmas for that child. The “Angels” are placed around town for generous individuals, companies, churches, and other organizations to purchase gifts. Through Angel Tree, thousands of local children will find gifts waiting under their Christmas trees.

Rehoboth’s Dogfish Head brewpub proudly joins over 1,000 breweries worldwide, participating in the Black Is Beautiful Initiative and collaboration brew. The Black Is Beautiful Initiative is a collective effort to raise awareness of systemic racial injustice.

Releasing on August 1, Dogfish Head’s iteration of Black Is Beautiful features aromatic caramel malt, kiln coffee malt, chocolate malt, black malt, roasted barley, and organic dark brown sugar, to create a deeply complex Imperial Stout, with a range of intricate flavors and aromas.

Black Is Beautiful will be priced at $22 per 4pk/16oz cans. This 10% ABV tipple will be available for curbside pick-up from Dogfish Head’s Off-Centered EmPOURium, with 100% of proceeds benefiting the Southern Delaware Alliance For Racial Justice.

“We got involved with the Black Is Beautiful Initiative because we proudly stand with our Black co-workers, customers, and community members,” said Sam Calagione, Dogfish Head founder and brewer. “We acknowledge the crucial work necessary to fight racial injustice, and we are committed to being part of the solution. We don’t have the answers, but we will not be complicit through silence, and participating in the Black Is Beautiful collaboration brew is one small way we can lend our voices to help foster change.”

Developed by Weathered Souls Brewing Company, the Black Is Beautiful Initiative urges brewers around the globe to develop their own versions of Weathered Souls’ 10% ABV Imperial Stout, Black Is Beautiful. While each participating brewery is encouraged to put its own unique twist on the beer’s originally formulated recipe, there are a couple of stipulations every Black Is Beautiful brew must meet – the beer must maintain the style and ABV set forth in the original recipe; the beer’s ingredients should showcase the many different shades of black and brown within humanity, and 100% of the proceeds from sales of the beer must be donated to a local foundation supporting racial equality and reform.

“Building our off-centered version of the Black Is Beautiful recipe and brewing this powerful beer alongside my awesome co-workers was an amazing and emotional experience. I’m beyond excited to hear what folks think,” said Bryan Selders, Dogfish Head brewing ambassador. “I’ll also share that Black Is Beautiful is just the first of the many limited-edition can collaborations we’re releasing this month. Over 350,000 Cigarette Butts were Collected by the

Ocean City Green Team’s Cigarette Litter Prevention Program

Visitors in Ocean City will notice something unique about four brand new benches in the resort community.  The benches, three of which are located on the Boardwalk and the other at Seacrets, are made from recycled cigarette butts.

The benches are the result of the Ocean City Green Team’s Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) which was created last year. The program encourages businesses, visitors, and residents to dispose of their cigarette butts and cigar tips properly while aiming to reduce secondhand smoke.

“Littering cigarette butts and cigar tips is unsightly, costly to clean up, and harmful to waterways and wildlife,” commented Green Team chairman and Ocean City Councilmember Tony Deluca. “Not only are cigarettes the most picked up littered item on our beach in Ocean City but 32 percent of litter at storm drains are tobacco products. Litter traveling through storm drains and water systems end up in local streams, rivers, bays, and the ocean. The Green Team’s Cigarette Litter Prevention Program, along with decades of coordinated beach clean-ups, aims to eliminate cigarette litter and these benches are a great result of our community’s efforts to keep our beaches clean.”

According to Keep America Beautiful (KAB), the nation’s largest organization aimed at eliminating cigarette litter and a co-funder of CLPP, cigarette butts remain the most littered item in the U.S. and across the globe. In addition to their contributions to the program, grant funding for the CLPP was provided by Worcester County Health Department and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

In 2019, CLPP began a campaign where “butt huts” were made available to businesses willing to take a pledge of participation and assist with collecting cigarette waste throughout Ocean City. The huts were installed in highly trafficked areas that routinely saw concentrated cigarette waste. When full the huts were emptied by volunteers and interns and sent to the international recycling leader TerraCycle, who recycled the cigarette butts and used the resulting plastic to manufacture the new benches.

“At TerraCycle, our mission has always been to eliminate waste, recycle the unrecyclable and use our innovative business solutions to minimize human impact on the planet,” said TerraCycle CEO Tom Szaky. “It’s through partnerships like the one we enjoy with the Maryland Coastal Bays Program that allow us to fulfill our objective and help preserve the environment for future generations.”

Maryland Coastal Bays Program (MCBP) is working with the Town of Ocean City to create a sustainable butt hut and recycling program to keep cigarette litter out of our waterways. KAB has awarded an additional $20,000 grant in funding that will assist with this as well as add additional messaging campaigns to both residents and visitors alike.

During the first session, participants will look at the anti-war work of Francisco Goya, Guernica by Pablo Picasso, and the work of the Dada movement protesting WWI. The second session will consider other artists, such as Diego River, Judy Chicago, Keith Haring, Basquiat, and Vik Muniz, and the causes they championed.
