The scheme to find the best in Sussex asked people to vote for their favourite farmers market as well as food and drink producers, restaurants, butchers, food shops.

Shoreham Farmers’ Market was announced the winner of the Best Farmers market in Sussex at the Sussex Food & Drink Awards held on Thursday 29 January 2009.

The market is run by Adur Council’s town centre co-ordinator, David Steadman. He said: “It is great news to hear that Shoreham Farmers’ Market won this prestigious award and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking those people who voted for Shoreham Farmers market.

Adur Council Chairman, Brian Coomber said: “We have always supported Shoreham Farmers’ Market and believed it to be the best market in Sussex and now we have an award to prove it. Great news.”

The other markets in the running were Pulborough and Uckfield. Shoreham Farmers’ Market was set up in 2001 with the support of Adur District Council and the local business partnership to assist in improving the viability, vitality and quality of Shoreham town centre. By attracting more visitors it has played its part in the town’s renaissance over the last few years.

Leukaemia is cancer of the blood. It’s not hereditary. You can’t catch it. Yet, alarmingly, leukaemia is the most common childhood cancer.

In February 1987, leukaemia claimed the life of fourteen year old Paul O’Gorman.  Just nine months later, another devastating blow struck the O’Gorman family when Paul’s sister, Jean, was also killed by cancer.

Always a caring boy, Paul had made his parents promise to help other children with leukaemia and, within weeks of his death, they started fundraising.  In November 1987, just days after Jean’s death, they met Diana, Princess of Wales.  Deeply moved by the double tragedy, she personally helped establish this charity.

Paul continues to inspire the work of CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA.  What started as a small memorial charity is now the UK’s leading charity dedicated to the conquest of childhood leukaemia through pioneering research, new treatments and the support of leukaemic children and their families.

Fifty years ago, leukaemia was a virtual death sentence.  Tremendous advances in treatment and care mean that four out of five affected children now survive.  However, alarmingly, incidence of leukaemia has also increased steadily during the past fifty years and the treatments, which include chemotherapy, radiotherapy and bone marrow transplants, can themselves cause severe problems in the young children whose lives they save.

Thanks to the generous support of the public, many areas of research and treatment are being investigated and progressed.  Teams of researchers funded by CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA are working towards the development of more effective, less punishing treatments which will not only drive up the survival rate still further but will reduce the risk of serious side-effects.

CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA is determined to find out more about the causes of childhood leukaemia and through an annual grants programme, project funding is awarded to researchers around the world investigating why children develop leukaemia.  While research is the key to protecting future generations, the charity never forgets about the children who are suffering today and what work can be done to ease the burden on children and families who are struggling through the long months and years of treatment.  The Paul O’Gorman Patient Hotel at London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital, one of the recently funded projects, provides accommodation for families who are travelling to and from London for outpatient appointments and helps to avoid the difficulties of attending treatments.

Kingsland House, in Kingsland Close, is part of national care home provider Barchester Healthcare, which runs an annual Barchester in Bloom contest.

The competition, now in its fourth year, aims to promote the imaginative planting of flowers, trees and shrubs in the gardens of its homes.

The green-fingered staff and residents of the 71-bed home have been competing against 170 Barchester homes across the UK, and have now been whittled down to one of 26 semi-finalist homes.

One of the categories that have taken it through to the semi-final is its community vegetable garden – which pupils from Kingston Buci First School have tended to on a weekly basis, along with school governor and gardener Andrea Burton.

Kingsland House spokeswoman Karen Hilton said that as well as the school, there had been various visitors from the community helping to tend to the vegetable garden, including a member of West Sussex Fire Brigade, family members and even the home’s window cleaner.

Spirit Circuits, which manufactures circuit boards for all manner of electronic equipment, has pledged to support the Shoreham Lifeboat Station Appeal, to help towards the cost of a new lifeboat and lifeboat station.

The company, based in Hampshire, produces Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) which lie at the heart of items like computers, games consoles, cameras and other hi-tech gadgets and cameras.

Steve Driver, managing director of Spirit Circuits, presented a cheque for £3,507 to the volunteer lifeboat crew at Shoreham Lifeboat Station.

He said: “I’m a huge admirer of the RNLI.

“I race in powerboats myself so I am well aware of the vital service that the brave volunteer crew members provide.

“Apart from that, in a business sense, I appreciate the importance of being there to ‘rescue’ people when they need a helping hand.

“The work of the RNLI is a lot more life and death than ours, but we like to think the principle is the same.”
