Q&A with Peter Clines Q. You grew up in Stephen King territory in Maine, yes? Did that make you into a zombie fan at an early age? A. Well, I was at the southern edges of Mr. Kingâ€™s fallout zone. Itâ€™s a little town called Cape Neddick, a little tourist place on the coast, and someone told me once that the population was ten times bigger in the summer than in the winter. And to be honest, I was terrified of everything as a kid. Land of the Lost gave me nightmares. Heck, there was an episode of Fantasy Island that gave me nightmares. I was right there when Kingâ€™s career really exploded, but his books terrified me. I finally worked up my courage to read one of his short stories, â€œThe Boogeyman,â€ when I was twelve or so, and to this day I canâ€™t sleep with the closet door open. The original Ghost Rider comics were my first tentative steps into horror, and even some of those freaked me out. My love of the genre really blossomed in college. Q. Have you always wanted to be a writer? A. Well, to quote George Carlin, not in the womb, but right after that . . . yeah. I can remember making scenes with my Star Wars figures and adjusting them all each night as their story progressed. In third grade I hand-wrote a â€œnovelâ€ that I called Lizard Men from the Center of the Earth, which was about . . . well, guess. Once I discovered my momâ€™s old Smith-Corona typewriter it was all over. I spent all my free time writing comic books and some truly awful Boba Fett fan fiction before there was such a term. I even made some early attempts at novels. One of the great tragedies of American literature is that our garage flooded in high school and all of that was destroyed. (Itâ€™s not really a tragedy . . .) Q. It sounds like you wereâ€”no offenseâ€”kind of a comic geek when you were a kid? A. When I was a kid, yeah. And a teenager. And a college student. To be honest, writing comic books was my big goal when I was little. My first rejection letters are from Jim Shooterâ€”then Marvelâ€™s editor in chiefâ€”because I would send him some of those (in retrospect) really God-awful stories every other month. With cover art. This is back when I was maybe ten or eleven. He was amazingly polite to a stupid kid. On one level, Ex-Heroes was my chance to finally write the kind of heroes I grew up with. Q. Do you have a favorite superhero? A. Iâ€™m a long-time Spider-Man fan. I started collecting The Amazing Spider-Man when I was about nine or ten and kept with it for years. Iâ€™ve got one of those big longboxes just filled with issues. I finally got so frustrated, though, with Marvelâ€™s big â€œCivil Warâ€ promotion, and especially how they resolved it. When Spider-Man made a deal with the devil to erase half his life, including his wife and best friend . . . well, I was done. Q. It sounds like youâ€™re not really interested in comics now, though. What do you think about mainstream comics these days? A. Tough question. I am a bit disillusioned with the big two comic publishers. To be clear, I donâ€™t think thereâ€™s a problem with using the medium of comics to tell more dramatic, adult-themed stories. The Sandman, The Walking Dead, Unknown Soldierâ€”these are all fantastic stories by great writers. My problem is when this sort of storytelling gets pushed onto characters like Spider-Man or Superman or Captain America, because â€œdramaticâ€ becomes shorthand for â€œreally messed up.â€ I think it detracts from these classic characters to push them into molds they werenâ€™t meant to fill, and those stories tend to just come across as pointless melodrama. Characters have six-page soliloquies about the nature of heroism rather than just doing something heroic. Iâ€™ve seen people try to do â€œrealisticâ€ stories with the Hulk . . . a character who got his powers by standing next to a nuclear bomb when it went off. These elements can be a nice polish on a story, but thereâ€™s also a point where they have no business being used. I donâ€™t think itâ€™s a coincidence that the industry has been struggling so much since this type of storytelling became the norm. Q. When you moved to California you ended up working in the film industry for almost fifteen years. What kind of work did you do there? A. I was a property masterâ€”the person who deals with hand propsâ€”on a lot of television shows and movies. I worked on a lot of cult things like one of the Beastmaster movies, Veronica Mars, and a bunch of lesser-known stuff. Iâ€™m actually the murderer in Psycho Beach Party for most of the movie. I prop-mastered Helen Mirrenâ€™s directorial debut, and she told me I looked like the type of person who should be sitting on the porch of a southern plantation writing novels.Also, I was writing scripts on the side. People looked at some of my feature scripts and television episodes, and I made the final round in a bunch of screenplay contests. All this industry experience led to a job writing articles for Creative Screenwriting magazine, which I did for several years. I interviewed George Romero, Kevin Smith, Sylvester Stallone, Orci & Kurtzman, and dozens and dozens of other writers and directors.

There are a lot of zombie novels out there. Some stink. Some are with one read. Some are great. This falls into the Last category. Peter Clines weaves a great story filled with memorable characters and situations. Superheroes vs. Zombies in a world overrun with the undead, or, as they're called here in a very humorous and pc way, ex's as in ex-humans. There is a brilliant plot twist that I can't give away, which is why there's no synopses. All I can say is, read this! One doesn't even have to be a zombie or super hero fan to enjoy it. It's a fun, exhilarating read! Leaves all the marvel zombie sequels in the dust.

A friend recommended this to me since I have a love of two things: Marvel and Zombies.I was not disappointed. The story centers around a world that's rapidly changing, people are suddenly so much more than just people, but with the gift of superheroes there is always a price, only this one is more than anyone wanted to pay.The novel, while in some ways very typical of a zombie genre book, full of gore and violence and all those things, had some twists that were utterly shocking, things that caught me completely off guard. It also took the time to explain the why. As an avid reader and movie-goer, the one thing I have always hated about theme movies and books is that no one ever takes the time to ask the big question, and it's never explored. You have heroes. You have zombies. But unless it's x-men or a radioactive spider or the rare Resident Evil series, no one ever takes the time to explain not only the why but the how. This book does not fail in that regard. It offers insightful history and explanations, and does so in such a mind blowing way.

Superheroes of all kinds are cropping up with a wide variety of abilities from superhuman strength to flight, fire breathing to magic. These people have chosen to save those in need and keep their true identities secret. When people start turning into zombies, the heroes mobilize, but the zombies are too widespread and numerous to defeat. They set up a living situation in a movie studio in Hollywood they call The Mount. Everyone contributes and the heroes enforce their laws in addition to scavenging for resources and protecting the people from zombie and human foes alike. A gang called the Seventeens have their own living space and have been largely left alone until they launch an assault on the heroes during a scavenging mission. A new enemy has taken over and is hellbent on making the heroes pay.Ex-Heroes melds two disparate genres, superhero and zombie apocalypse, and makes them work together in an oddly harmonious way. The superheroes are created by a variety of things like toxic spills or magic with abilities like super strength, breathing fire, speedy healing, and/or flight. These characters follow the same archetypes of famous heroes. For instance, St. George is clearly the overpowered boyscout Superman with slightly different abilities (breathing fire instead of laser eyes). Stealth is similar to Batman with her abilities and more cynical worldview. Chapters are labeled Then from before the apocalypse and Now. St. George is the main character, but each hero gets their own chapter Then chapter and, if still alive, a Now chapter. Then, each hero is fighting crime on a fairly small scale and Now, they are maintaining The Mount and merely surviving.The zombies (or exes) are pretty standard fare. They are the animated unded. The disease is a bit different. It's a virus that mimics white blood cells thus replicating quickly in the body. It's highly infectious through bodily fluids and survives a long time outside of its host, making dead exes and even smears of blood just as dangerous. This disease isn't fatal and only takes hold after death. The reason why people usually die after a bite is that other diseases piggyback on the zombie disease, making it a toxic mix of every other disease every other person in the line of infection had. I'm not honestly sure how sound the science is, but the concept is intriguing. Further, zombified heroes retain their abilities and create havoc when an uber-zombie with the ability to control other exes has a grudge against the heroes.Ex-Heroes has a fast pace and interesting stories in the past and present to get to know each hero a little bit along the way. The beginning just throws you into the world and you start to tread water a couple chapters in. My only criticism is in some of the heroes' narratives. Stealth is a beautiful woman in a revealing outfit and she's disgustingly objectified by quite a few of the male heroes. Once is showing a perspective and doing it multiple times just seems immature of the author and the characters. Stealth herself seems more like a robot than a person as if she had to be so different than her appearance to be seen as a legitimate hero. Other than that, I enjoyed the twists and turns. I'm planning to continue the series and I hope the problems I have resolve as the characters get more developed.

Zzap, the human electric current who can power a whole city and move faster than the speed of sound. Gorgon, the vampire-like hero who can suck the life out of anyone (who is still alive, that is, unfortunately). Regenerator, who can't die and who can heal anyone with a touch of his hand. Cerberus, the giant mecha piloted by a genius female scientist. Stealth, the sexiest woman alive, able to move and kill like a ninja.ALL. IN. THE. SAME. BOOK.Yeah, that's right. It's the kind of stuff dreams are made of. And the beauty of it is that it actually works. Because it could have failed horribly, and given a poor, childish result. When I started reading, my wife saw my face and said:"Oh, no... Another zombie book. You've got that stupid grin again. It's a zombie book, right?""Y... Yes?""What? What is it? Oh, no, don't say it... Is it zombies having sex?"Coming from someone currently reading 50 Shades, this question did not actually surprise me. But Ex Heroes is better than zombies having sex (to tell you the truth, I think anything would be better than reading about zombies having sex).Peter Clines's style is very neat, and the novel's structure gives it more depth than one might think: the narrative is split between chapters dealing with present events and others retracing each superhero's past through flashbacks. These chapters were my favourite, because they pieced together the whole puzzle, gave rhythm to the story, and offered different viewpoints as well as different voices.All in all, Ex Heroes is a great ride. Kind of the equivalent of a great pop-corn movie that reveals itself to be more than just another pop-corn movie because it's original and well done. Looking forward to the sequel.

First off, I have to admit that I made a lot of vocal complaints with this entire series as I made myself read them all. It was something I just had to make myself do, despite the times I had tried and failed in the past. Now then, with that said, I have to also admit that I am beyond glad I made myself do it and ultimately, that I let my friends's suggestions help me to decide to do it to begin with. This series as a whole is absolutely and utterly fantastic - it presents you with an entire world and a full cast of characters to love or hate, but it distinctively shows you why you should do just that each and every time. And though the politics and army talk really strained me and my attention at times, as those are not my usual type of interests when fictional, "assassin"-themed books are concerned, it again really helps build the world up around you and gives you the best feeling from all perspectives. The series as a whole is worth reading for anyone interested in fictional work and fully developed characters/plot points, and as a side note as well, the Kindle version of each book is also very well laid out and another huge plus for them.

First off let me say, Brent Weeks has probably my favorite style of writing. It just entrances you from the beginning and does not let go. Not to mention the way each character and setting is painted and depicted just makes the story come alive and makes you honestly feel you are in Midcryu(the continent in which the bulk of the story takes place).You will most likely hear this in a majority of the other reviews you read(good and bad), at least I did, and that is one of the beginning scenes. I will not spoil it for you, but even with all the warnings in the reviews, it caught me a bit off guard. I am not saying that scene was bad, in fact it contributed to the story in making a really good villain to focus on and help enhance the main character's personality and determination, but you should really watch out for that scene, in my opinion.The book, and series, is extremely gory, but instead of that element overpowering the story, it compliments the storyline extremely well and makes the characters and plot stand out from its competitors.

My husband needed a book to read for our three week trip we were taking. He read this in 3-4 days (over 600pgs). Then I read it and understood why it only took him a few days. It is one of the best books we have read in a long time. We had to buy the second one while still on our trip because we had to know what happened next! Rather graphic in the violence, but not more than he needed to be. I appreciated the vagueness he gave regarding sexual things, because I didn't need to know everything. He gives just enough for you to understand what is going on, and then lets you elaborate on your own. There are definitely times when he goes into detail, but again, I don't feel like it's too much. He is an excellent writer. We are almost through with the second one! Definitely recommend.

Absolutely loved this book, a great adventure, and characters are great. Always loved a book about redemption and I hope Kyler is redeemed in the end. Can't wait to read the next book. It really kept my attention thru the end. I read a lot and he really has to be good to keep me until the end. This one did.

I am halfway through the 3rd and final book. Obviously I think they are worth reading. The 1st book left me lost quite a bit of the time because he brings in so many characters. But I just let that slide and kept reading. Most of them just faded away. And the book was definitely good enough for me to buy the 2nd. That one was great! The last book has some down parts but is already getting better and I am sure it will be very good. Full disclosure: I am not all that into the machinations of magic and at times am bored with it. But I think he is great in character development and in dialogue and story. And he adds insightful comments through his characters often.

So, this story is really well written. Weeks shows a lot of talent for writing strong characters and intricate plot.Personally, I struggled with the hopelessness and darkness through 80% of the story. I just kept thinking, "Is his life ever going to get any better? Is there any hope or happiness?" Because, while I don't mind tackling tough subjects and realistic writing, I do not like the absence of hope.However, I persevered to the end and was glad I did. The ending was fantastic and perfect. And it actually makes me want to read Book 2. Maybe there is a bit of hope...

It was dark, violent, brutal and oh, so exhilarating! The protagonist was sympathetic although at times too sniveling and sentimental and quite easily goaded. A little bit more back bone and conviction would go a long way. The character of Elaine - brrr, what a moralistic nag that got ti be this way inly on the backs and misdeeds of folks she criticized. And what a serious errors of judgement on her part - giving up her only friend to save a perverse employer. Killing her off swiftly can only benefit future installments. The fights, intrigues, confrontations were epic and breathtaking.

It's a little bit of a time commitment, but something that can be easily adapted into any regime.I was drawn to the dental benefits, but what really spoke to me was the detoxifying aspect. Dr. Coleman gives examples of how oil pulling can cure migraines, diabetes, tension headaches and asthma and can help with more serious conditions like diabetes and Crohn's disease. Oil pulling could completely change someone's life is they really adapt to it.The recommendation is 20 minutes of oil pulling a day. I like that Dr. Coleman gives the option of working up to 20 minutes per session. 5 minutes might be a good place to start and something I can definitely work in to my day so I may not give up on it so easily! I also like that there are different oils to choose from. Dr. Coleman gives so many options for base oils and essential oils to combine to give the user just the right health benefit. So easy and cheap, I'd be crazy not to try.

This was one of the kindle books I picked up in a vow to be healthier now that I am in my 30s. Oil seems like the biggest thing now for health and beauty. The last two weeks I've been using argan oil for my face and it's been amazing so I decided to see what other things I can use oil in.I've heard of oil pulling on TV shows and mentioned in beauty and health blogs but normally just gloss over it. I was browsing through kindle books and this one caught my eye. Dr. Coleman starts off by an introduction regarding health and oral hygiene. I enjoyed the fact that she is in her thirties and was trying to do natural beauty (very reminiscent of my argan oil story) and looking into other applications for natural products to make one healthier.Dr. Coleman started with an introduction to oil pulling. I finally know what it is! She also talked about the base oils used and essential oils you add in. She explained the method in a way where I really feel like I can and should make oil pulling a part of my daily routine. The remainder is the different benefits of oil pulling and how to target certain things. For example oil pulling cannot only improve oral hygiene but allergies. Dr. Coleman explains that oral hygiene ties into other parts of the body and oil pulling helps get rid of all the nasty bacteria in your mouth. The book gives combinations of base oils and essential oils to add together for your oil pulling. I'm gonna definitely give it a swirl. Very educational and helpful.

She walks the reader through the process of learning about, and then choosing, the correct oil. It is obvious that Dr. Coleman is very knowledgeable about the subjects she covers. This book is a valuable resource for anyone wishing to enjoy a healthier, internally stronger body, and, as Dr. Coleman continually points out throughout the book, inexpensively!!

Read it in a day, mainly useful for the suggested oil combinations, i.e. tea tree with a coconut base etc.

As someone with lifelong gingivitis that never seems to go away, I really loved reading how oil pulling can benefit my gingivitis and gums. Overall this book is full of an abundance of information, information I didnt even know if I needed or wanted to know, still don't. I am however convinced that oil pulling can change the world and can't wait to give it a try. Great book and very informative.

Oral hygiene is very important in a healthy body; bad breath, cavities, and gingivitis are signs of an unhealthy body, so if you get rid of the bacteria in your mouth you are healthier.Swishing oil in your mouth for 20 minutes is something you would have to learn to do and not swallowing the oil seems impossible. The preparations prior to the oil pulling, flossing, using a tongue scraper, eating more probiotics, drinking water, exercise and getting enough rest seems the best ways to obtain good oral hygiene for a healthier body. This book answers all your questions about oil pulling and the multitude of other health benefits it describes. I would try oil pulling just for the fact it said it will whiten your teeth.

I have just finished using this book in an online class (offered by the author). I could not disagree more with the "Don't buy this" review from July 28, 2008. I worked the tutorials and would say I have covered 80% of the examples in this book. I found 2 very minor typos. And no errors of susbstance.This book is a tutorial, rather than a reference. It can be hard to find specific information, but that is not how the book is intended to be used. IMHO, you will have a hard time finding a better HTML tutorial than this book.

The product fulfilled a requirement necessary for classes, which is why I brought the item. I thank you for prompt service.

Bought this as a textbook for an HTML class, but it could be used on it's own. Easy to follow instructions.

This book is a great text book for learning how to create web sites and learn to code. It is a great resource for the beginning web site designer and a fantastic reference book. I was interested in this book because of my heritage. It was hard to understand where the Vikings, traveled because they used the names used by those who explored. I got a map out to try to find the areas the author was talking about. I wasn't sure even then.The artifacts found were interesting. And the general reasons they gave for the voyages gave me a different perspective. I finished the book & feel I know more, but I had to work at it.

I didn't give the fifth star because there are different and confusing writing styles, and these distract the focus on the very interesting story of Vikings in America.Otherwise, you have to read this book.

Extensive about the building of ships and the raiding in Europe. The middle part of book is about Greenland and Iceland . Then a section about the Vikings in North America. Informative in all sections.

one of the better charles rivers books. has characters more developed than usual for charles rivers. of course the cast of characters possible is limited.

I found many mistakes in the book, and I don't mean stuff that's outdated, I mean flat out mistakes. I pointed it out to the teacher who teachers from the book and had to show her other reputable material online on multiple occasions...Whatever though, it's for class... if you're reading this book you probably aren't too deep into the field where a piece of misinformation will affect your career too much.

Not sure if the content really caters to the new age on this subject. the concepts and tech may be a little obsolete. Some universities continue to ask students to refer to this book as the ultimate guide for the subject.

I took e-commerce at Rowan University and this was the book we had to use. I loved its relevance. It can still be applied to any company looking to expand its virtual presence.

Well... what can I say. I've never had a tech textbook before that is actually WRONG in multiple areas. I don't mean just a difference of opinion, but factually flat out wrong.There's also several areas where their grasp of the concepts they claim to teach is tenuous at best or presented in the wrong light. Many of their concepts are partially updated from their outdated concepts and information. Some of the business concepts of the book are good, but the overall presentation is just broken and the technology is usually presented in a terribly inaccurate manner.I know this is a textbook so you likely won't have a choice in buying it, but a word to professors, this is a waste of your student's money. Just don't do it.

While I had to drop the course, I still plan to keep this book and read it on my own for my own knowledge when I have the time. It looks like a most interesting book filled with lots of useful information.

I was a little worried about buying a used book off of Amazon - however this product was of great quality. Very pleased.

Wow a complete negative approach to writing dedicated to well I guess for lack of a better word"losers". I think the writer could explain this in their words better than I can. This is what I like to refer to in books as the big break down.Page 1. "All business owners, regard regardless of their current level of success or lack of success are stuck-either you are growing or dying".In the sentence above the author takes the low road by assuming that just because your still trying to learn that your somehow stuck. It is also a very poorly constructed sentence because he says your stuck even if your growing."Yet you feel like the proverbial hamster on the wheel. Bla Bla Bla barely "keeping your head above the water"....bla bla bla "You spent serious money on ads that don't work." Do these first page quotes inspire you to run out and get inspired. Here I thought I was a multi millionaire trying to continue my education.On page 117 he sums up his approach to marketing and (I guess) writing books as well. "Don't overeducated - You want to enform and impress, but do not tell everything you know. Tell people what to do but not how to do it Let them take the next step to get the exact how-tos."That is very much the book in a nutshell. Bunch of very general statements. I assume (like the author does) that these 5 star reviews are part of a group of authors that say nice things about each other's works or friends. I would like to make an irresistible offer, return the money I paid for this book and I will remove my review. What a bunch of junk!

About the Author

Trena L. Wilkerson, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor with a focus in mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She currently works with both preservice and inservice mathematics teachers across grades PK-12. She was a secondary school mathematics teacher for 18 years and has worked in higher education for the past 17 years.She received her undergraduate degree from Mississippi College in 1976 with a major in mathematics. Masters work was completed in 1980 at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana with an emphasis in mathematics education. OMG this book helped me pass the test on the second try.I am a 7th grade math teacher, who wanted to add to her resume and decided to take the 4-8 Math TEXES exam. I thought how hard can it be? I teach math everyday and I have gone to school for the elementary portion. I decided to take the test in the summer. I stupidily thought that I could just take the exam with little to no prep and pass. (Oh yeah, I also planned this a week after my honeymoon). Well I was rocked when I took the test and found out how much material was over Algebra, Calculus and statistics. These were not concepts I had to teach but I had to know the fundementals to teach my grade level. I never took calculus in high school so it was like I was seeing a different language. Well needless to say when I got the results I wasn't suprised. I missed passing by 8 questions. I was crushed, I considered leaving the profession. Just kidding, I signed up for another exam in December, 6 months should be enough time to get me ready for round 2.So I looked online and found this book, it had great reviews and seemed to help several others that were in a similar boat to me. I read a little bit at a time, and took the week before to really cram and re-learn as much as I could on the subjects I was rusty in. I went into the testing center confident that I would kick this tests butt. I was so happy when I actually knew what some of the upper-grade level information was.Well I passed the test by over 10 questions. I knew I would have not been able to do as well if I had no prepared for the exam. This book and CD really helped me fill the gaps that I had.This book is a great resource and will defiantly help you increase your score or pass the exam if you are a repeat tester like me.

This is an excellent study guide for the Texas Middle SchoolMath Exam. The guide summarizes each of the competencies with the needed formulas in a quick an concise manner. It provides a perfect refresher. The sample tests are actually more comprehensive than the TExES exam. I was very pleased. Oh, I passed the state exam first time with a weighted score of 92%. The guide was instrumental in my success as I had been out of university for over 20 years. Teaching is a second career for me.

I passed the test, but then again I've taught math for ten years. This more helped me get my mind right for TExES goodies on being a standardized Texas test taker.

I did so so on the test. I studied/crammed for 3 months prior to the text, but there was topics that were on the test and other practice tests that this book didn't cover or mention. Other than that, it was very helpful and got me on track to pass.

I, along with several of my co-workers, found several errors in this book. The book helped me remember many formulas that I had forgotten and other basic information. At times, however, the explanations were incomplete, confusing, or just plain wrong. On the tests, I found errors as well. Several of the answers were wrong on the answer key. So, if you need a basic review, I'd say it's okay for that, but don't let this be your only study tool.

Spurgeon's eloquence and passion still thunders through years, as he explains just how he sees the Doctrines of Grace as of supreme importance in properly understanding the Bible and embracing the full, true nature of Christ.Potential buyers should understand that this is essentially a booklet; it is of a smaller size, and consists of excerpts from Spurgeon's writings elsewhere. A reader will probably navigate this in 30-45 minutes, perhaps less, but that does not discount the value of what this is. Do not expect a full Systematic Theology or an exceedingly in-depth look at the tenets of Calvinism. This is a brief testimony and explanation of Spurgeon's position on this key topic. A thorough and masterful defense of Calvinism--which means, of course, it is actually a defense of God's right to be God--sovereign, immutable, gracious, and righteous. In a marvelous economy of words, Spurgeon demonstrates what true Biblical Calvinism really is (in opposition to the warped caricatures of its slanderers), and how genuinely Scriptural it really is. One can never (or should never) come away from the study of this subject without a greater appreciation of the majesty and glory of almighty God, and the consequent humility and unworthiness of human beings, and therefore the absolute magnificence of His gracious Gospel. Spurgeon keeps everything in the proper perspective and balance--this little booklet is highly recommended, and though it will whet your appetite for much more extensive reading on the subject, it will also be a wonderful little reminder of the basics of this doctrine, to which you will resort again and again, like spending occasional time with a dear old friend.

First I must say that I am an avid fan of Spurgeon, having read "Lectures to my Students" and "Morning and Evening" many time through. As a 4 point Calvinist myself I snatched this booklet up due to its reasonable price and relevant subject matter from one of my favorite preachers. Know that this is indeed a "booklet". I read the whole thing in around an hour or so. Also, it is not technically an independent book but a collection of writings from Spurgeon's autobiography, so the "defense" is more of Spurgeon's reflections on his love for the doctrines of grace. So think of it more of a testimony than an attempt to change minds or defend a system. That being said this is a fine booklet and a great resource for those who are curious about Calvinism or Spurgeon himself. Spurgeon is well known for his honest simplicity and he brings that blessing to this difficult subject matter in an excellent way. Definitely recommended!

I already love Charles Spurgeon and this little book is a good illustration of the reason I do. It's very short, which surprised me, but his writing is just superb. In his eloquent, articulate style, he clearly states his views on and support of Calvinism, and gives his reasons why. In such a short work, it cannot be a detailed textbook, but sometimes "short and sweet" is exactly what you're looking for. I'm using some of his quotes in the new book I'm writing on this subject. Found some nuggets of gold here.

Many people have heard of and read Charles Spurgeon, but not many have delved into this classic on Calvinism. I would recommend this book to folks who don't know much about Calvinism or who reject Calvinism because of what they think it means. Spurgeon writes very plainly and uses many examples to explain what Calvinism is all about, and in doing so, he bring to light many misconceptions some believers have about these teachings. I grew up in the Presbyterian church and am now a Baptist, and I found this book to be enlightening as far as understnding God's Word. This book did not bring me to Calvinism, but by reading this book, I feel it's easier to understand where folks are coming from when they talk about the Scriptures dealing with election. And isn't it more important to try to understand each other and God's Word rather than divide the flock and miss out on what God's trying to teach us? Just read this book and continue to study the Bible, because you'll see something new each and every time you read it.

Spurgeon's defense is a passionate appeal to emotion for the correctness of the doctrine of election. It's weak if one is looking for iron clad scriptural support however.In fairness we need to remember that this was the style of the day, and I suspect it was much better received in its day than it appears in today's very clinical settings. The modern reader - like me - might find it a bit thin based on scriptural or logical evaluation.Over all, however, it is a pleasant read. Even if it is unlikely to convince a dedicated Arminian.

Spurgeon was gracious to acknowledge that the scripture speaks of the two truths that God unconditionally elects and that man is responsible. He gives the illustration of the "near parallel" lines of truth converge well beyond our sight at the throne of God. He also rightly acknowledged that he knows that there will be Arminians in Heaven regardless of their disagreements. It was refreshing to read a defense of Calvinism that was not harsh, but a sharing of the scripture with a heart driven by love for God and love for his brothers in Christ.That was not my final reading of this short book. It was a rare treat.

Both the United States and the Soviet Union built Plutonium manufacturing plants and their supporting cities. This book talks about the building of these plants, the elite way of life of the scientists and technicians that lived in these cities compared to their other country men, the nuclear accidents and disasters that contaminated the surrounding countrysides, and the long term adverse effects still taking place today.

This book is well-researched and written. It is a rather long read, but the parallels between the US and Russia development of making plutonium for atomic bombs is so interesting. The history of the companies in the US that managed the plant in Hanford, WA is also enlightening. This book depicts a lot of racism and disregard for human life, so that might bother some readers. I still have many pages to read, but feel the book will remain interesting to the end. I highly recommend this book for those that know little about the production of plutonium here in the US and in Russia during the 1940s to early 1950s.

Kate Brown has done the almost impossible, using vast files of information long classified in America and the former USSR to plumb the depths of the secrecy and the cover-ups involved in the pursuit of plutonium for weapons production. While some Americans as well as Russians dispute the accidents and cover-ups, one can only surmise that they were so patriotically blinded by their participation as to deny anything which besmirched their remembrances of the programs and their lives in the secret cities. Some of the evidence, to be sure, is anecdotal, however Brown has managed to document her assertions and is to be commended as a brave historian for attacking an investigation into a part of history that many would wish to remain unknown. Having spent a good part of the past 20 years traveling in Russia and seeing the fear of contemporary Russians that the walls still "have ears" demonstrates the degree of difficulty Brown must have had to gain the confidence of people there in telling this story, not to mention similar challenges in the U.S., particularly among people still residing in and near Hanford.

The production of plutonium is a oft-forgotten piece of the global conflicts which have long shaped multiple societies. In this refreshing inquisitive work, Kate Brown illustrates that the tragedy and ingenuity wrapped up in this colossally dangerous process should never depart from any related narrative.The book carries an activistic tone, but at the same time reliably articulates the histories of two (surprisingly similar) communities, Richland in Washington State, and Ozersk in the Ural mountains. This book is an interesting, illuminating read that details the negligence of American and Russian government nuclear programs and their reckless dumping of radionuclides into unwitting nearby communities. This book does an excellent job documenting how the US and Russian governments "handled" the exposure of their citizens and their various attempts to ignore and bully sick workers and citizens into quiet submission.If you are from an Eastern Washington family and you wonder why half of the people in your family over the age of 50 have had thyroid cancer.... tragically this book might be of interest to you.

I have worked on Hanford issues for 25 years, helping whistleblowers, sick workers, and trying to influence the cleanup to go in a productive direction. I have also been to many of the former Soviet nuclear sites, including Mayak on five different occasions. Kate Brown's book captures not only the history, the stories, and realities, but poses some interesting and insightful perspectives on the two cities and bomb factories. She has pulled together a huge amount of information and distilled it into a readable, interesting book which all of us who live in the nuclear age should read.

I felt sorrow for the thousands of citizens suffering for the cause of paranoia due to the US and Soviet governments. This book and others I have recently read made me realize, as a child of the 1950's, the depth of the deception the US Government displayed.Disappointing in some respects as this book just adds to my distrust of our government.In light of current events, Snowden et.al. this book illustrates how much we need to keep an eye on our (the US Govenment) leaders.

The government doesn't really care about the people's health. They will reward a few contractors and people, turn on the PR machine, but really everyone is cannon fodder.

Write No Matter What: Advice for Academics is one of the best books I've read on productivity in the academic self-help genre. Jensen covers a good deal of previous terrain early in the volume, but there is enough new material to make this worth reading stem to stern. Her strategies for maintaining momentum, working through writing blocks, various stall patterns, critical feedback, etc. are incredibly nuanced. If you are looking for graduation gifts for the newly minted academics in your life, you cannot go wrong with this book. It's written largely with a faculty audience in mind, but graduate students facing the crush of the dissertation process will absolutely benefit from this text. Jensen's candor and forthrightness are empowering. Academics of all ranks and institutions will find this book to be a balm against the challenges and pitfalls of writing and working in the academy today.

Excellent book with an easy-to-read style and conversational voice. Included many actionable recommendations. Unfortunately, however, the author confirmed my suspicions - to write a lot you have to actually write a lot. I was hoping there would be a Harry-Potteresque magic trick that would help me bypass the actual work. SIGH.

This is by far the best guide to the motivational side of academic writing that I've ever encountered. It combines practical insights with deep wisdom about the obstructive myths we tell ourselves about our writing (and about ourselves as writers), about how to counter those myths, and about generative ways to get more writing done. It's a book that I think every academic should read--you will recognize many of your foibles, treated with kindness and insight--and that faculty advisers should assign to their graduate students as early in graduate school as possible.

Highly recommend if you need or want to better understand why we fail to write and how we can be productive and less afraid of ourselves and failure.

A practical and wise book for faculty writers!

The author has a dark writing worldview. She sees the academic environment as inhospitable (if not actually hostile) to writing, and she takes a cold and clear-eyed look at the barriers (real and imagined) that get in the way of writing. This is not a perky "Yay, you can do it!" book; it's more of a "Okay, seriously, here's how to do it" book.I found the book sobering, practical, wise, and well worth reading. I've read most of the "productive academic writing" books, and this one is among the best.(FWIW: I don't know the author and bought this book with my own money.)

You are not going to read a better example of a cross-generational, city boy-country daddy, romance with deep religious overtones than this one. OK, so I exaggerate a bit.The cross-generational thing is more of an attitude that 41-David Fisher, a widowed Mennonite farmer, takes toward his new neighbor, 31-year-old Christie Landon who has spent his adult life as an openly gay New York City semi-hedonist. Even though David has a 20-year-old daughter and 18-year-old son, he is not a daddy to Christie--he's an exceptionally friendly, totally honest, and seriously hot man-next-door-who-gives-off-mixed vibes.David is two years widowed and 25-years religiously and sexually conflicted. His daughter is a pre-nursing student at Penn State who follows church teachings, and his son a divinity student at Franklin and Marshall, and his life has always been immersed in the strict Mennonite culture of Lancaster County, Pa.Christie is looking to change his hedonistic ways and takes the opportunity to delve into his late aunt's bequest of her home to try to get more of a perspective on life after a violent overreaction to alcohol and a little blue pill a trick slipped him in a Manhattan club, pills which almost killed his best friend.If you think never-the-twain should meet, or greet, you would be wrong However, the time it takes for both David and Christie to warm to each other, and become warm with each other, is beautifully plotted and written so that this totally unlikely coupling seems so natural that you wonder what will happen when the kids find out.And that's where the book goes from laconically loving to viciously vindictive in a wrap-up that will leave you breathless. This is one of author Easton's best works and deserves attention be paid immediately.

Okay, so hereâ€™s the thing: this book was a disappointing miss for me. I pre-ordered this as soon as I saw the blurb and was eagerly looking forward to it. I couldnâ€™t remember the release date and checked half a dozen times before it finally appeared on my Kindle. I love May/December romances, I love food and cooking, and I love characters coming to terms with their sexuality. And A Second Harvest has ALL THREE, how could I not love it?While the writing itself was fine and I really did like both of the main characters, the novel as a whole fell flat. The story started off with a strong introduction to David, the quasi-Mennonite farmer in his early 40s, isolated and unhappy with his life on the farm. Our first scene with David is while he is waiting up with a favorite cow that is dying, and he is disconcerted that the death bothers him as much as it does (which, hey, makes sense for a dairy farmer). I immediately wanted to know more about David. He lived through the death of his wife of 20 years, both of his children have recently left home, heâ€™s isolated and unsure of his choices over the last 40 years. This is basically a perfect set up for some serious introspection on grief and regret and fear of change, all kinds of amazing, rip your guts out, emotion. Unfortunately, the book never really gave us much more from him. Sure, David grew with his relationship with Christie, but we never really got any of that emotional processing, any of the FEELS. I wasnâ€™t even as fascinated by life on a farm as I usually am.And Christie. Christie was one part of the book that I was leery of, because Iâ€™m not usually a big fan of the â€œparty boyâ€ persona. Iâ€™m not sure if I liked Christie more than I anticipated because nothing in the book actually made me believe he was a â€œfierceâ€ New York club boy or if my fondness was for some other reason. He was graceful in crappy situations and when push came to shove he reacted in realistic ways. I was longing for more time with him in the kitchen, talking about the food, the taste, the smells, the experience of Christie cooking exotic meals for he and David to enjoy.I know Eli Easton can write great secondary characters. Iâ€™ve seen it in other novels. This book wouldnâ€™t have made me believe it. Every secondary character is so so flat. From the meek and mild daughter and future-minister, bible-quoting homophobic son, to the Pastor that basically says only words he found on a â€œHow to Save One of Your Flock From the Sin of Homosexualityâ€ pamphlet, all of the secondary characters were static images instead of real characters.To sum up, I know this review is a bit harsh for a book I gave 3 stars. Really, what it comes down to is disappointment. This was a really great set up for a story, from an author that I know can write well, that fell far short of its potential. It was FINE. It was OKAY. It was readable and I wasnâ€™t upset that I spent a few hours of my time reading it, but it wonâ€™t stick with me, and Iâ€™ll think hard about another pre-order from Eli Easton.

I've loved many of Eli Easton's novels (Superhero has been on my top 5 all-time list since I first read it- and have reread a dozen times). This book may be my new favorite from her.A Second Harvest is the story of David, a 41yo Mennonite farmer from Pennsylvania. Widowed two years earlier, and his two college age children off studying, David is just going through the the motions of living while taking care of his farm. Into his quiet life comes Christie, a hard partying 30yo New Yorker trying to decide what he wants from life after a life threatening scare. Christie has inherited the farm next door to David's and decides that getting away from it all and trying a quiet life in the farmlands of PA is just what he needs. What he didn't plan on was the hot, older farmer that lives next door. As the two men become friends over shared meals, farm work, and exercise, Christie begins to fall for his straight neighbor. But what Christie doesn't realize, is that David has been hiding feelings that just would not have been accepted by his family and church. As the two try to navigate their feelings for each other, they must also deal with the issues their relationship will cause for family and friends, and if the rewards of that relationship will outweigh the consequences.I knew this book was coming out months ago (I had heard from the author while she was still writing it) and have been waiting for it excitedly. I can't explain why this book hit me so hard. I read hundreds of books every year and many of them make an impact on me. But this book...Wow! I think I just found myself so connected to the character of David, maybe seeing something of myself in him. It's rare that I so connect with a character even in other books that I love.Loved the characters, loved the story, a couple of great sex scenes (the scene where Christie "shows" David how to sext-OMG), some angst, and HEA. My only complaint; I wanted the epilogue to be in Bora-Bora (read the book, that will make sense)

I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with pain during intercourse. This book gave me the hope I so desperately needed. It validated my experiences and emotions, and gave me the tools I needed to properly figure out what was happening to me and take that new information to my doctor and therapist. It is packed full of information that is all backed up by references, and taught me so much that I never knew. I loved it so much, I read this book in two days (and I'm a slow reader) then gave it to my husband to read. It has been an eye-opening experience for the both of us, and we will now be pursuing different treatment options with my doctor as a result. I will be reading this one again.

I love this book! It was my life saver! If you have vulvodynia or anything similar I highly recommend this book! It helped me understand my pain better! It gives lots of other alternatives you can try to suggest to your doctor's as therapy treatments for you. It also shows a lot of things you should test for to try to diagnose you. My doctor even ended up buying it after I brought it to one of my appointments! I found out I actually have pelvic floor dysfunction that causes my vulvodynia.

After reading this book, I feel more aware of what could be causing the problems I've been dealing with for years - but not sure of how to treat it. I was hoping the book would equip the reader with more knowledge of what to do to try to heal herself. This book will help you understand what you are feeling and what the possibilities are for causes, get your doctor on the same page, and move toward getting help. The book is about arranging flowers in a very large church like a very large Catholic Church. However, it has some great ideas.

This is excellent. If you decorate your religious space as a volunteer with floral arrangements, this offers a very thorough explanation on how to decorate large spaces.

As a member of my parish's Flower Guild, we arrange fresh flowers for the altar each Sunday. This book offers wonderful suggestions to create arrangements for every season and provides ideas you can simplify and modify for the space in which you arranging flowers. I found the "tips" Judith shared throughout the book most helpful. This is a must buy for anyone who wishes to be a little more creative in flower arranging. The photos, alone, are magnificent!

The Kindle edition is NOT recommended as it will fail to load the proper icons. The fact that the type for keyboard shortcuts do not transfer in the Kindle edition makes it useless to purchase. Caveat emptor.

The book is superb but the package I received was defective as it was soft leaving the heel of the book partially damaged. This is the second time that I purchased a book with the same complication. I purchased other books from amazon without this problem as the package was hard enough to protect the book inside.

Having always had PCs, I purchased my first Mac this December. Encouraged by the intuitive nature of Apple products, I was able to use the device adequately at the first sitting. But I was then intrigued by what else I might do with my Mac. The public library offered various books concerning older IOS and I found these inadequate in moving me forward in using my new toy.Thus, I was happy to be able to order this "hot off the press" book.I was amazed-- and admittedly-- a bit intimidated by its size.But the manual, like the Apple device, is user friendly. So far, I have found it most useful as a reference. The chapters are well named and some information is given in supplementary boxes so that new users are kept up to speed.So far, this is a singularly helpful reference. I hope to read it in its entirety as time allows.

I love this series, Ive been trying to use an old yosemite version my friend gave me, but lots has changed since then and since I'm new to the iMac and apple world This is the most comprehensive manual there is. I have bought other manuals on my Kindle app but the ability to hold and search for what I need in the paperback is the fastest way for me to get my questions answered.Clear concise and well organized if you're only buying one this should be it

I find Davis Pouge's Missing Manuals a much faster way to solve my "how do I" questions with all my Apple equipment. The online Apple menus usually present too many options to review in order to accomplish a task. MacOS Mojave is a timely addition to my library of Pouge Manuals.

I bought this because of my previous positive experience with other editions in the series. I like the way the information is organized. You can read just the sections you need at the time and save the rest for later. Chock full of handy tips and shortcuts that you would probably never find just using the built in Mac help system. Well worth the cost.

The Kindle version has been fixed. All icons/graphics are in place. I love this series. The author is so thorough and funny also, win win. Highly recommended!

I like the level of detail in this book. It's a great reference and fun to read.

I purchased this book since it seemed the best organized, but after reading it, I'm disappointed. The information and recommendations are extremely general, and didn't add any value to me. As an example, the authors combine details of the 7 stages of Alzheimer's into 2 categories - 1-to-4 and 5-to-7 without getting into the granularities of each stage. The basic message I got was, "If you get to stage 5-7, you're hosed." Frankly, the Alzheimer Association's website has more pertinent information with more valuable solutions - and it's free. Maybe the subtitle, "A First-Time Caregiver's Plan," should have been a hint for me not to purchase the book since I've been a caregiver for some time (yeah, right in the eye of the "hosed" storm), but even for soon-to-be caregivers, I would recommend other resources. You really need to jump into the trees rather than just see the forest even at the early stages of Alzheimer's.

Urinary tract infections causing hallucinations is another one I did not know. My goal in reading this book is to gain information and clarity in making my mom as comfortable as possible in this life. This onset of Alzheimer can be scary and heart breaking if you do not know what you are looking at, doing or understand the illness. The love one does not mean any harm. If they do not remember, or They cannot help it. Alzheimer's wipes the memory away completely. That has to sad not just for the parent, but the child. I just wanted to learn all I can and this book is one of the most helpful reads ever!!!
