The End.

Shotgun Space is now closed.

We closed our doors at Shogun Space at the end of June. A massive thanks to all the artists and patrons who made our first gallery foray possible.

That said, we do have plans slated for the end of 2008. After a much-needed summer vacation, we'll be back; sign up for our mailing list below and keep your eyes here and here for updates.

Alana Celii

Bio

Alana Celii was born in Chicago in 1986. She is currently pursuing her BFA from Parsons School of Design, and lives in Brooklyn. Her work has been featured in publications such as A Field Guide to the North American Family, Hijacked, Canteen Magazine, Ruby Mag and Look-Look magazine. Alana is the co-founder of Fjord; a project whose aim is to bring opportunities to young and emerging photographers on the Internet. She has exhibited work in group shows and photo festivals in New York, Dallas, Fremantle and London.

Statement

In the introduction to Recovering Landscape, James Corner states "Wilderness is a socially constructed idea, a landscape, even though it appears wholly 'natural.'"

Following Corner's assertion, the images in The Wild explore artificial and natural scenes that remove essential contextual clues, and displace them into foreign landscapes. Whether interior or exterior, both landscapes combine elements associated with the everyday and the synthetic. The interior landscapes are constructed with the intent of educating the public on wildlife; in a sense, these landscapes are for the spectator only. They have paths that move the viewers along and demonstrate how to view the environment.

However, there are barriers limiting how much one can be involved with the landscape. The exterior landscapes contrast this notion in that they are natural environments that are being re-purposed for human activity. The relics that are left speak of an expansion that fell flat. This human activity is reshaping the natural landforms and altering them into an idealized space. These sites are being created for human efficiency and ease of consumerism. While this is a utopian notion, it is the goal of these developments. Both types of landscapes are a modern conception. The interiors are a way of viewing and learning about what is natural. The exteriors are a remnant of what was once natural, but are now decayed and abandoned. Although these spaces are both still strangely beautiful, there is a subtle but ominous presence of how we will view landscapes in the future.

Nicole Jean Hill

Bio

Critters

As our subjugation of nature appears to have irreversibly isolated the human from the nonhuman, I explore the kinship we seek in the animal world. In Towards a Philosophy of Nature, Robert P. Harrison suggests that, "precisely at the moment when we have overcome the earth and become unearthly in our modes of dwelling...we insist on our kinship with the animal world. We suffer these days from a new form of collective anxiety: species loneliness." The creatures in my photographs perform various functions for their human counterparts: food, companionship, ornament. Sometimes these functions intersect. Through an examination of animals and our relationship to them, I address the ambiguous hierarchy of imposition and tenderness.

Reclamation - Ten Views of a Nebraska Landfill

Through my landscape images, I attempt to recognize a control that we assert over land with subject matter that is neither spectacular nor extraordinary. Inspired by the woodblock print series 36 Views of Mount Fuji by Japanese artist Hokusai, I photographed the Douglas County landfill outside of Omaha, Nebraska over a two-year period. The landfill functioned as a geographic landmark that helped me navigate the commute from home to work and back. Nestled in the rolling hills of the countryside, the landfill mimicked the natural landscape when seen from certain vantage points, while revealing itself as a manmade heap from others.

Untitled (Football Field, La Playa Stadium), Johanna Reed, 2006, C-print, 20" x 30", Edition of 6

Featured in Inside/Outside, October 2007.

Bio

Johanna Reed has exhibited work at Gallery Ocho, Perch Gallery, Atkinson Gallery, and Caruso Woods Gallery. She is currently pursuing two undergraduate degrees, when not taking (or painting on) photos.

Fields statement

The five pieces in this exhibit are taken from the series Fields, which consists of prints from 35-mm film of sports fields in Santa Barbara, CA. The intended functionality of these locations often eclipses the visual design that they inadvertently demonstrate. Fields aims to show the aesthetic by-product at work on spaces built for non-aesthetic purposes.

<img src="http://www.shotgunspace.com/images/inside/kuball.jpg" alt="Inside/Outside" #7" title="Downtown Freeways Mini Storage #7" />
Downtown Freeways Mini Storage #7, Liz Kuball, 2006, Archival Pigment Print, 12" x 18", Edition of 20

Featured in Inside/Outside, October 2007.

Bio

Liz Kuball was born in Washington, D.C., during the height of the Watergate era and raised in the same town in Michigan where her parents grew up. As an undergraduate at Indiana University, she studied English and history and dropped out of an introductory photography class after the first week. She holds a master's in English from Butler University and a master's in writing from the University of Southern California. Her photography explores consumerism and its ramifications--what we use and how we use it--and has appeared in A Field Guide to the North American Family, a novella by Garth Risk Hallberg (Mark Batty Publisher, 2007), and the Humble Arts Foundation group show no. 16. Liz was named an Honorable Mention in the Hey, Hot Shot! Summer '07 competition at the Jen Bekman Gallery (New York, NY). She lives and works in Southern California.

Liz Kuball

In Store statement

Between 1985 and 2007, the square footage of self-storage facilities in the United States grew 740 percent, and driving the freeways of Southern California, this growth is evident. This incredible expansion has been spurred by Americans' accumulation of things, gluttony of the material form. As I drove by storage facilities, I started thinking about what was behind those garage doors and padlocks. It occurred to me that the warehouses weren't full of meaningless "stuff"--they were the repository for all kinds of memories that people weren't willing to part with. Old furniture inherited from the recently deceased. Boxes of old love letters. Books and LPs and photographs. In this ongoing project, I look for the beauty in these places, imagining what's behind closed doors.
