National Minority Donor Awareness Day

National Minority Donor Awareness Press Conference
Family of Raul Velasco will come to Houston to help promote donation awareness. His father was a liver recipient. Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011 @ 2 p.m. City of Houston City Hall 901 Bagby, Houston, TX 77002.

August 1st was National Minority Donor Awareness Day. A donor drive was held at Ben Taub Hospital.

Among those in attendance: Tyler D. Nelson, a teen born with cystic fibrosis. He has cirrhosis of the liver and diabetes.

He's been waiting on a liver and lung transplant for about a year now. But instead of complaining, he's helping other teens like him with his new e-book.

I know you must hear it all of the time, but Tyler is going to do great things! I don’t know that I have ever met such a genuine and charismatic 16 year old! Tyler woke up this morning and said he had the best dream ever last night. He dreamed he received his transplant and his whole family was there in the room with him singing (Aunt Tracy did a solo which is funny because she can't hold a note) and he knew everything would be alright. He had the biggest smile on his face that I'll never forget for as long as I live but yet he was so serious and assured. If you haven't already, register to be an organ and tissue donor today. Give the gift of life!
