Revolution of Nepal: The Revolution Against corruption and old age

Nepal is living through a moment that many are calling a revolution. For years, frustration had been building over corruption, nepotism, and the lack of accountability in government. Ordinary citizens watched as public money disappeared, politicians enriched themselves, and basic services failed to improve. Young people, especially, felt shut out of opportunity and ignored by those in power. They expressed that frustration online, where social media had become a rare space to speak freely, organise, and share evidence of wrongdoing.

When the government of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli suddenly banned more than two dozen social media platforms in early September 2025, the move felt like a final insult. Officially, the ban was presented as a regulatory measure, but for millions it looked like an attempt to silence dissent. Overnight, creators lost their audiences, small businesses lost their marketing channels, and activists lost their main tool for coordination. Gen Z, already angry at corruption, poured into the streets. Within days protests spread across Kathmandu and other cities, and clashes with security forces left at least nineteen people dead. The government lifted the ban, but by then it had lost control of the situation.

Underlying the anger was also a fear that Nepal’s sovereignty was being compromised. Oli’s government had been unusually close to Beijing, signing on to parts of China’s development initiatives and echoing Chinese positions. Some of these steps were not in themselves illegal or unprecedented, but in a climate of secrecy and mistrust they were seen as proof that Nepal was sliding under foreign influence. For many, it felt as if decisions about their country’s future were being made somewhere else, without debate or consent. That impression fed conspiracy theories: that foreign powers were manipulating the protests, that elites had planned the social media ban to justify a crackdown, or that the entire crisis was a staged fight for control. None of these stories have been proved, but in a country where facts are scarce and institutions are weak, rumours fill the gaps left by official silence.

Amid the slogans and numbers are real people. Young students skipping classes to march in the streets, parents searching for their children after police confrontations, small shop owners watching their online income disappear with the bans. A college student from Lalitpur, interviewed while using a VPN to stay connected, summed up the mood simply: “They send their children abroad with stolen money and silence us at home. We’ve had enough.” That sense of having “enough” united people across class and region, and within a week the Oli government collapsed.

Nepal now has an interim administration and a promise of fresh elections. But the deeper questions remain. Can any new leadership clean up entrenched corruption? Will there be real accountability for the killings during the protests? Can the state rebuild trust and protect space for free expression, both online and offline? And will Nepal find a balanced foreign policy that reassures its citizens while navigating its powerful neighbours?

This uprising is not just a change of faces at the top. It is a generational demand for dignity, transparency, and sovereignty. Whether that demand becomes real reform or fades into disappointment will depend on what happens next. For now, what began as a reaction to a social media ban has become a sign of something larger: a society no longer willing to be silent.

Deaths & Injuries

In the initial protests (September 8-9), till now around 50 people have been confirmed killed when police opened live fire in Kathmandu and other cities.
Dozens more were injured in some reports over 300-400 people, many with serious wounds.
As the unrest continued, the death toll rose. A more recent count places 72 dead after bodies were found in buildings set on fire and in other damaged areas.
Over 2,100 people injured, per health ministry updates.

Damage to Property & Infrastructure

More than 300 local government units (municipal/rural units) across Nepal were damaged, some offices fully destroyed by arson or vandalism.
Major metropolitan cities like Biratnagar, Birgunj, Bharatpur, Pokhara saw heavy destruction, with offices, vehicles, documents and records destroyed.
Homes of mayors and political leaders were also attacked and burnt in several places.
Significant public buildings were burned, including provincial assembly buildings, government offices, police stations, and parts of the parliament complex.
An estimate of damage to public infrastructure is around NPR 200 billion (Nepali rupees), though this covers mainly the buildings themselves and does not fully account for all vehicles, equipment, or ongoing administrative losses.

Nepal has erupted into revolt. What began as protests against corruption and a sudden ban on social media has transformed into the downfall of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and the rise of an interim government. Behind this dramatic turn are grievances that are deeply felt: lack of accountability in government, nepotism, misuse of power, and a sense among many that ordinary citizens have been ignored for too long. Still, amid the anger and the chanting, rumors and theories are spreading some rooted in fear, others in real geopolitical tension. Among these are conspiracies claiming outside forces India, the United States are orchestrating events. Whether true or not, the belief in external manipulation reveals how fragile trust in institutions has become.

First, it’s important to understand what set things off. For years, citizens have seen public funds misused, civil servants unpunished, projects left incomplete, and elites enriching themselves while people in the streets struggle. When the government banned some 26 social media platforms, claiming regulatory issues, many saw it as a direct attack on free speech, a move to silence the very tools people used to expose corruption. That ban ignited widespread protests. Young people left their homes, went into the streets, and demanded more: not just a change of leader, but a change in how things are done.

In the midst of upheaval, conspiracy theories often flourish. Nepal’s current moment is no exception. Here are some of the major theories that are circulating (whether substantiated or not):

Some theorize that the US, or elements within it (sometimes called the “Deep State”), have backed the protests. The idea is that Western powers prefer a government that is more aligned with their interests especially as Nepal begins to navigate its position between China’s growing influence and other global powers. People point to revived US aid projects, and wonder whether such aid isn’t purely humanitarian but has strings channels that could influence domestic politics.

There are claims that India is interested in seeing Oli removed because of his China-leaning posture. Some believe Indian intelligence agencies or political actors are, behind the scenes, giving support to movements or rumors, or enabling groups (royalist sympathisers, young protest organisers) that are opposed to Oli. The argument goes: if Nepal is seen as aligning more closely with China, that has strategic implications for India’s borders, trade, and influence.

Some speculation frames the movement less as driven by Nepalis alone, and more as one piece in a broader regional contest (India vs China vs the US). According to these views, domestic discontent is real, but outsiders may be amplifying it funding NGOs, aiding communication through overseas diasporas, leaking media narratives, helping structure protest messaging to tilt outcomes in favor of governments they prefer. Critics of this theory say there’s little credible evidence; supporters point to the speed and coordination of protest organization once the social media platforms ban was announced.

Media outlets and political opponents in Nepal and neighboring countries have discussed the idea that protests are being “timed” or “staged” to weaken China-friendly governments. Some Indian media, for example, have alleged that the unrest might be part of a US strategy to counter China’s influence in South Asia. Others counter that similar logic is applied every time there is domestic unrest anywhere automatically blaming some foreign power is a simplification that shifts blame away from local governance failures.

Nepal has long been in a delicate position between India and China. Border disputes, trade blockades, and influence from both sides have shaped memories. That makes people more sensitive to signs that foreign interests may be at play. When things happen fast, and the official story is inconsistent or delayed, rumors fill in the gap. For many, the state is not seen as a reliable source. Media misreporting or selective reporting strengthens doubts. Nepal does receive foreign aid, engages in diplomacy with big neighbours, signs infrastructure deals, hosts Chinese delegations. That opens real possibility of external influence, which makes conspiracy theories more believable. Whether or not influence is covert, interaction is overt and that gray area invites speculation. Observers point out that once the social media ban happened, protests popped up rapidly in many cities. Some see that as evidence of pre-planning or external support. Others see it as the consequence of pent-up frustration and modern communication tools (VPNs, diaspora networks). Either way, it helps fuel stories about someone pulling strings.

The corruption, inequality, and governance failures are real. The ban on social media was a trigger that resonated widely.

The protests were large, youth-led, decentralized, and spread fast.

The Oli government had taken steps aligning it more visibly with China, which worried many in Nepal and overseas analysts.

Direct proof that either India or the US funded or directed the protests in a decisive way.
That foreign powers planned the timing of the ban or protests to exact outcome.
That the key actors coordinating on the ground were under external control.

There’s a danger that these conspiracy theories, even if partially true or not, risk overshadowing the real grievances of people on the ground. Students, workers, families who feel betrayed by corruption their voices can be drowned out if too much attention is given to “who is behind this” instead of “why this is happening.”

Also, when foreign interference is alleged, it can be used by some leaders as excuse: to dismiss legitimate protests as outside meddling, to crack down on dissent, or to shift attention away from accountability.

Nepal’s revolution, whatever one believes about external involvement, must be understood first as a response to domestic failures: corruption, lack of accountability, suppression of expression. The conspiracy theories about India or the US aren’t surprising they reflect both real geopolitical tensions and a deep distrust by the populace in the national leadership.

What will matter most now is whether new leadership can rebuild trust, open up space for free speech (including online), show real accountability, and ensure any foreign engagement is transparent. If that happens, Nepal could turn this moment of crisis into one of renewal. If not, the conspiracy theories will persist, and the dissatisfaction that fuelled the revolt may echo again.

Nepal’s revolution shows what happens when corruption, suppression, and foreign policy ambiguity pile up without addressing the voices of young people. The revolution wasn’t just about banning Facebook or Instagram; it was about a generation saying: “Enough.”

People came out not just for a change of face, but wanting a change of system. Not just “who leads”, but “how we lead”. The bigger test now: will the interim government and future leaders actually deliver? Or will the cycle repeat?

Nepal deserves more than promises. It deserves transparency, dignity, fair opportunity and a sense that its citizens are heard, not silenced.

Is the Miss Nepal Controversy Just Another Marketing Gimmick?

In recent weeks, the Miss Nepal pageant has found itself under fierce public scrutiny. From judges’ comments criticized as insensitive especially toward contestants with disabilities to accusations that the beauty contest perpetuates unrealistic standards many are asking: is this controversy genuine, or is it being stoked for attention, viewership, and brand value?

Here are some reasons why it might be more marketing than moral reckoning and why that matters.

A clip of judge Rachana Gurung asking a contestant with a physical disability to “explain about your arm” went viral. Some say the judge was being insensitive. Others point out the context was more complex.
Samriddhi Rai, a public figure, has called beauty pageants “nothing more than a marketing gimmick,” arguing they objectify women and trade empowerment rhetoric for entertainment value.
A recurring criticism: pageants like Miss Nepal promote narrow beauty standards, privacy compromises, and behind-the-scenes bias. These points resonate on social media.

Why it might be a marketing play

Virality generates eyeballs
Controversies bring attention. An insensitive remark, a judge’s misstep, a moment of perceived injustice — these are powerful fuel for social media sharing, commentary, memes, and debates. That visibility translates into sponsorship, ad revenue, and prestige.
Branding via “cause” or “empowerment”
Pageants are increasingly positioning themselves as platforms for women’s voices, social issues, inclusivity, etc. But when an organization emphasizes empowerment after controversy breaks, it raises the question: was empowerment the goal — or a way to limit the reputational damage and retain relevance?
Emotional triggers sell
Outrage, hurt, identity issues — they provoke strong emotional responses. Marketing campaigns (and media outlets) know this very well. Controversies are more shareable, which means more reach—especially on platforms that reward engagement.
Ambiguity allows both sides to benefit
If the organizers respond with sincerity, they can earn respect; if people stay upset, the controversy stays alive and gives more exposure. Either way, the brand stays relevant. It’s a risky balancing act, but one with potential upside.

Why this matters

Authenticity risk
If people believe the controversy was manufactured or exaggerated for publicity, trust erodes—not only in Miss Nepal, but in similar institutions.
Real harm to individuals
Contestants, especially those already marginalised (by disability, ethnicity, class), can bear the emotional cost of public scrutiny. Even if used for marketing, human impact remains.
Dilution of genuine advocacy
When every issue becomes a PR moment, causes that need sustained effort risk being treated like temporary trends.

What should we ask moving forward

Are the responses to controversy backed by structural changes (e.g. judge training, better inclusion policies), or just apologies and statements?
Who is benefiting? Sponsors? Contest organizers? The winners? Or only those with media platforms?
Is the audience demanding real transparency and accountability or just more sensational moments?

In short yes, there are strong signs Miss Nepal is being pulled (whether intentionally or not) into the kind of controversy-drama that doubles as marketing. That doesn’t mean all criticism is disingenuous many concerns are real and valid. But for the brand, the stakes are high: ride the wave well, or be seen as yet another spectacle disguised as sincerity.

Axiata Group Conroversy: A Policital solution or a corruption at its best

On December 1, Axiata the telecmooouncation giant announced its exist from Ncell with sale and purchase agreement (SPA) with Spectrlite UK Limited. This is the share of the Reynolds Holding Limited, which owns approximately 80 percent equity stake in the Nepal-based Ncell Axiata Limited.

If you look at the new company that acquired the share is the Spectrlite UK, registered in the United Kingdom in September this year. The company is owned by Satish Lal Acharya,a business man from Singapore. Looking ta the dynamic the Sunivera Capital Venture which owns the reaming 20% of necell is owned by his wife Bhavana Singh Shrestha.

The most noticable things is Axiata acquired the share in 2016 for $1.365 billion, was valued at just $50 million in 2023.

The telecom industry is no stranger to controversies and corporate reshuffling. One such case that has garnered significant attention is the Ncell Nepal controversy. In recent years, the departure of Axiata Group from Ncell has made headlines, leading to questions about the reasons behind this decision. In this article, we aim to shed light on the controversy and provide an insight into the factors that resulted in Axiata Group's exit from Ncell. This seems to be very normal but in reality there is a greater master mind that has create a matrix of selling and buying game.

Ncell, a leading telecommunications company in Nepal, found itself in the midst of a controversy regarding capital gains tax (CGT) in 2016. The controversy arose due to the ownership transfer of Ncell from Swedish telecommunications company TeliaSonera to Axiata Group.

The Nepali government, through the Large Taxpayers' Office (LTO), claimed that TeliaSonera owed a substantial amount of CGT on the transaction. It argued that the capital gain generated by TeliaSonera's sale of Ncell shares should have been subject to taxation in Nepal, as Ncell owned valuable assets within the country.

1. Regulatory Uncertainty: The unresolved tax dispute and the uncertain regulatory environment surrounding Ncell created uncertainty for Axiata Group. Operating in a business environment with significant legal disputes can be challenging for any company, affecting long-term planning, investment decisions, and potential growth prospects.

2. Reputational Risk: The controversy surrounding Ncell's tax liability had a negative impact on the company's reputation. Aligning with a company involved in such a high-profile legal dispute could have potential implications for Axiata Group's overall brand image and stakeholder relations.

Nepal's Economy is moving toward high #inflation with basic necessities like milk and rice's prices going up. There is a big possibility of a further #EconomicCrisis coming ahead...

Global rate of growth is slowing sharply, with further slowing likely as more countries fall into #slowrecession.

#Inflation has been broad-based, with food prices expanding by 7.5 percent and non-food price inflation increasing to 8.7 percent

Unless supply disruptions and import-markets are controlled, those increased rates could leave the global core inflation rate adapting the deficit of higher import for an imbalance to import more of the basic necessities.....

Need for strong policies to curb inflation without exacerbating #RecessionRisk is the priority of the time. To create better solution and lowering the inflation rates, currency stability and faster growth, policymakers could shift their focus from increasing the prices to boosting production and agricultural collaboration. Policies should seek to manage the inflation to basic necessities and improve productivity and capital allocation, which are critical for growth and poverty reduction.

The current account deficit widened from 7.8 percent of GDP in FY21 to a historic high of 12.8 percent of GDP in FY22, associated with a drop in remittances and a larger trade deficit.

Nepal Government says no registration no youtube Channel

KATHMANDU, March 9: The Nepal Government has regulated the online platform by introducing a new regulations making it mandatory for all online televisions including Youtube channels to be registered and come under the TAX limit. Till date there was no regulation to monitor the earning from youtube video's and other online platform.

The government has set Rs 500,000 as a fee to get license to operate online televisions

The regulation has been brought under the 19th amendments made in the National Broadcast Regulations, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. It states mandatory registration for all online entities who monetize Youtube channels. The regulation has also defined Youtube as an OTP platforms and all audio and visual programs broadcast or transmitted through the internet as online televisions.

The Proposed regulation by the communications and information technology ministry and adopted by the cabinet on 3 March, the decree is an amendment to the ten “rules” issued under the 1993 National Broadcasting Regulations (NBR).

Nepal is cursed for Wrong Leadership and Flash Flood

It seems Nepal has been cursed with wounds that falls back one after the other creating a vulnerable situation of instability and corruption. Nepal has been majorly hit by natural calamity and political instability creating a situation of agony. The political crisis in Nepal culminated when Prime Minister Oli dissolved Parliament on 20 December, 2020 prematurely as per Articles 85, 76 (1), and 76 (7) of the Nepalese Constitution. He also declared the date of mid-term polls to be on 30th April and 10th May this year. By doing so, he tried to upset the designs of his rival camp in the NCP led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal who wanted to unseat him from power. But due to this decision of Oli, the NCP was split into two factions — one led by Prime Minister Oli and the other by Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Madhav Kumar Nepal. Each of the two factions approached the Election Commission to register changes in the party structure and claimed to be the inheritor of the party.

Prime Minister Oli’s faction of NCP has around 83 lawmakers on his side in the House, while the Dahal-Nepal faction of that party has 90 lawmakers. With 63 lawmakers, the Nepali Congress (NC) — the second-largest party in the House — has emerged as a virtual kingmaker. Any of the two factions of the NCP could form the government on the majoritarian principle with the support of the NC.

Alternatively, the NC with 63 lawmakers could join hands with Janata Samajbadi Party with 32 lawmakers, apart from the Dahal-Nepal faction of NCP with 90 lawmakers. In that case, this government might have 67 percent seats in Parliament.With the dissolution of the parliament to the legal fight going on reestablishing the parliament, Nepal is no where in the situation of seeing itself protecting its citizen. With the high political ambition of the KP Oli prioritizing election over vaccination, the country strives for begging resources and aid with the international community.

Amidst, the second wave of covid19, the rate of infection spread all over Nepal, with a rapid increase in the number of new cases and deaths. Imposed from April 29, the lock down was extended until May 12 and then when the number of cases started to rise the lockdown was extended until May 27 earlier.

With no exist strategy the Nepal government further stricken the lockdown on May 25, where grocery shops and other activities were withheld imposing additional restrictions to come into effect from May 28 to June 3.
with huge criticism and public outcry the government decided to let the groceries reopen from June 4 when they extended the lockdown to be in effect until June 14. From Last week again the lock down was loosen extending it for one week. It may seems as the government is trying its best but ground reality is there is no other strategy where Nepal government is baiting upon foreign donation and resources. At this time of crisis when there is a need of Vaccination campaign the government which is suppose to be moving ahead with the agenda of Vaccination campaign seems to be dwindling its political manifesto of conducting the election. The priority is ELECTION than saving lives of the millions who are bound to face the consequences.

From the second wave of the COVID19 that resulted in thousand being infected with no facility of proper health care and resources the Nepal Government decision to lock down the country was highly questionable in context of the economic status.

This has raised new flags of corruption to the mismanagement of fund to lack of resources there are issues of governance and no transparency which has majorly hit the government accountability.

Sindhupalchok Flood

It has been reported that at least 18 people have dead and 25 missing in floods and landslides in Helambu and Melamchi regions of the Sindhupalchok district.

Chief District Officer Arun Kumar Pokharel says local officials and the police have collected reports of seven deaths in the past hours. The flood and landslide has destroyed three bridges in Helambu and one in Melamchi . Many roads have been destroyed, leaving many parts of the district disconnected.

What a shame?

When we have worthless #leaders like these, it's a shame not just to the country but to democratic values. We have selected the worst out of the worst.

It is government's responsibility to takecare of the public in #crisis. #COVID19 has evolved as a #pandemic and the role and responsibilities of the government and its leaders are 2000% in finding solution and reliving public.

When people are in need and they can't feel government means you have #FAILED and you should not be giving explanation, you should be working 24/7 Mr Bhattarai.

Sad thing you are not a #leader but a sad example of the system with no hope.....

The current situation of #Nepal has no solution, the government has left the public at the courtesy of #lockdown which has prolonged to it's level and there is no other solution. We don't have proper infrastructure, ventilators, and system. What are the public suppose to do?

People are dying with or without #Covid

You and your family have been receiving the salary from the government but there are people in the streets crying and begging for work and food.

You came to the government by throwing stone and how would you understand the importance of public welfare.

#Revolution and #change speaks one language of discrimination. There is only one difference in between people who have and who have not.

Giving limited #PCR testing for the #public is not a question of what Nepal government has done for the country but it's high time we think about exist startegy ....

We pay taxes to Nepal government not for your salary but to safeguard #publicinterest and well-being

When I write this blog I feel sad to say we have leaders like Yogesh bhattrai who say they are youth and who say they are working in a crisis situation. I feel sad when someone tries to justify something where you can see things are not done in the way it should have been but they pretend to be doing. The role and scope of leader is not just limited to the things that they have done, they have to take responsibility for thing that they have not been able to do which Mr Bhattarai doesn't understand.

Nepal is sinking towards the depths of uncertainty and choas with the current series of events and decision made by the Nepal Government during the post #covid and pro #Covid. On one hand there is a huge question raised towards Nepal government accountability and transparency about the COVID19 spending of 100 million where as on the other the public empathy has broken its limits with the limitation of lock down and lack of no exist policy.
Apart from that the a major break through was the new map of Nepal that hugely impacted the pro political situation of the anti Indian felling where there is a seriously rift going on in between the democratic and republicans. The democrats are blaming the republican for introducing the new map focusing lower tolerance at the diplomatic side where as the republican are blaming the democrats for not taking any action during all these year about the conflict zone of Limpiyadhura and kalapani.

The controversial zone as per the British agreement falls in the Nepal region but due to the negligence and lack of ownership it was outcasted and was later taken over by the Indian side due to its strategic importance. Reality, the zone has been made conflicted with pure pressure and force as Nepal is a small country and Indian repression has always been pressuring the government in issues like these.

With various political parties and manipulation the public and opinions is diverted to the desired political agenda. The main problem is the lack of leadership and commitment that evolves within the pride of anti Indian feeling and being too cautious about every decision made. Crisis demand promptness and diligence and if you keep on prolonging it creates challenges from all sides.

The Nepal Government has not been able to gain clarity in its strategy in the new annual budge and has given the public more burden of tax. This has further created a situation of anger and mistrust.

In this outcry various groups are manipulating the situation from their own sides

1. The MCC grant has been stretched by the opposition and they are not interested in resolving the problematic section but are trying to prove the MCC grant as a threat to the dying economy of Nepal
2. The pathetic Democrats of Nepal are more about why did you bring the new map. They Government touched the sensitive side Indian alliance, so they are hammering
3. The Republican sold out on the 100 million covid budget, man the PM funds are fully managed in an accountable and scientific way
4. Nepal is being played by the Invisible powers trying to create uncertainty

The streets are full of youth activist demanding accountability for the 100 million spend but who is going to tell them to be accountable for the government we have to be accountable first. We have to pay our taxes and do the necessary. The Government is not asking for taxes for the 3 months of lock down its saying clear everything or submit your tax claims. If you don't than there so many organizations that are operational, only 3 months was shutdown not the 9 months so its time WE OPEN OUR EYES. .............................

Regarding tax, I see the government being fair nobody is asking for the money that they don't have, the government is asking to clear the tax. Bank rates have been reduced and the government is trying to facilitate the situation. 100 million is nothing for 3 months to manage the 30 million population and most important the funds spends from PM Relief funds has its own system of accountability and transparency.

Nepal has always been a sovereign country with lawful citizen following law and regulation. Time and again the news of people getting arrested for writing and commenting on various issues related to powerful people shows the limitation of political culture and lack of tolerance. There is no leadership and acceptance of reality check about the current ongoing organized corruption and crime.
In fact reality is there is no human right for normal people. Human rights are meant for people who have money and power who can buy and interpret their needs and wants with the help of law.

Social media is not a formal platform and just because somebody says something, how can one be arrested. These people who are in power cannot refrain themselves with the help of law. The normal citizens have nowhere to go as they are the ones to pay the tax and they are the ones to bear the corruption and they do not have the right to speak ....................

IT SUCKS, Mr Prime Minister, if a person is criminalized for his FoE under defamation then you should also be put into jail for speaking all those lousy jokes that you speak and crack which makes no sense and makes a mockery of leadership and values.

If people will not express their frustration in social media what should they do?

Should they start a fight against the government for the corruption and organized crime that is happening under the system. ????

Kathmandu press published a news about the organized the corruption that happened during the procurement of media equipment for the Corona relief. The article questioned the involvement of Asgar Ali, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s IT consultant, Kshitiz Rimal, the son of Oli’s chief advisor Bishnu Rimal, and Swaraj Pokhrel, the son of Defence Minister Ishwar Pokhrel in the procuring medical equipment from China. It was claimed by the
Kathmandu Press that it's web developer Shiran Technologies unauthorizedly accessed the website due to conflict interest in regards to one of the news published on Tuesday theand removed news from the site.

F1 soft and esewa both companies were founded by Asgar Ali which has a significant stake in siran technology.

According to Kathmandu Press ,” They received number of calls from the people and when they disagree to remove the news the web developer deleted the news and restricted the admin panel from them. They called the tech company and threatened them to do legal action and only then the web developer cpanel returned the access of the website.”

Kathmandu Press has issued a press statement saying it has taken the unauthorized access and content removal as a move to control media and an attack on press freedom.

This is a very unique case scenario for a country like Nepal of unethical access or hacking. The limitation of the case doesn't just limits here as the company F1 soft manages the banking sector app of 28 commercial banks. With such enagement and international tie up with Alibaba as well the company has landed itself into a more complex and complicated with issue of

2. Trust, ethic and morale
3. Hacking
4. Infrastructure vulnerability
5. Cyber security

The case not only deal with abuse of authority but has significantly triggered a discussion about trust and morales. How are the business or clients suppose to trust people who we abuse authority when they need it.

In an age where we are talking about misinformation and disinformation cases like these prove that core values are more important than any rules and regulations. All the people have to be responsible from their side be it the journalist be it the technology people and the politicians.

Corona Virus in Nepal -Update March 25

The country is currently in a Lock down state with 7 days initial lock down. The move was consider rude and unjustifiable but later people understood why it is being done. On the 1 day the number of infected was 1 but with the second day the number increased by 3 officially. But as per sources the number has raised to 19 where more or less the cases are to be officially confirmed .

SO WHAT HAPPENED or WHAT WENT WRONG?
The decision of lock down came in as a very strategic way but in reality there was no strategy involved. I mean to say the Nepal government just declared lock down with no infrastructure or quarantine facilities or any other resources management issues. There are hospitals and and facilities but its a pandemic that means at least have some preparation done.

I really don't know what they were thinking and doing ?

Things that went wrong during the Corona Outbreak
1. The first thing that went wrong was when the lock down was planned at least 10% of the population quarantine facilities and infrastructure was suppose to be devised
2. No resources management or food management was planned for the public and the people who were coming from outside
3. The people who arrived were not kept in the quarantine instead in the name of HOME QUARANTINE a self declared status of government escape goat was used and people were let go to roam around free
4. Monopoly and Black marketing is on high operation no fix mechanism was set up
5. Police Brutality high on practice

Future 1. There are more chances of infection
2. The government with its limited thinking is pushing the people towards higher infection rate as there are limited no test kits are available
3. The Lock down will increase as India has already increased the number of days to 21
4. The situation is going to worsen as the supplies of food and medicine will run out
5. The foreign migrant workers who left the country are coming back but the government of Nepal is making them enter in the name of home quarantine
6. Thumb rule of survival is work with the basic problem of what is unmanageable i mean to say resources like hazmat suit, medical testing kit, quarantine structure etc Nepal seems to be still unprepared and looking for support

No Privacy in Nepal

After the global GDPR enactment alot of the developing countries were forced to bring out the privacy law in their respective countries. In compliance to the third party agreement of the GDPR, privacy law or act was endorsed in alot of the tourism based countries. But the problem right now these countries are facing is they have no idea or definition of privacy. It's like a head fish the law may have clearly defined the rule and objective but the enactment seems to be waiting for it's court of justice.

I mean to say living in a country like Nepal and talking about privacy is a thing that really makes me consider why the government of Nepal is so ignorant about the issue. Do we have to ask the white people to show us or tell us what to do in this regards.

The practice of the government has been very ignorant in disclosure of public information like citizenship number, address and other vital information in their websites during the communication.

I was surprised when I check the passport office that openly shared name and citizenship number of people whose passport number were ready for delivery. Likewise the license office was displaying people information in a Google drive document. The credibility of the government and their work operation seems to be very unbiase towards the definition of what cyber security and data privacy is ?

The problem and challenges that we are facing :

1. Awareness and capacity building of privacy
2. Cyber space awareness capacity training
3. Vulnerability of infrastructure
4. Identity theft awareness
5. Cybercrime awareness

Reality is we need good leadership not only to drive this but at the same give results beacuse these issues deals with the vital part of citizen information.

Gokul Baskota's controversy of 740 Million corruption

After the leakage of the conversation of the Minister of Communications and Information Technology Gokul Prasad Baskota negotiating with Bijaya Prakash Sharma Mishra a swiss agent regarding security printing of passports and other sensitive material, the social media took its toll.
The conversation is about the procurement deal to be sealed at Rs 26-27 billion. with a commission of 740 million — 70 per cent. Baskota is also heard using obscene language in reference to bureaucrats involved in the project.

The conversation created a pressure in the government which resulted in Baskota's resignation following a meeting between ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Co-chairs Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal in Baluwatar.

Following the resignation of the Minister, the CIAA confiscated all the documents from the office of Ministry of Communications and Information Technology for further investigation.

Now the main question is whether there will be a proper investigation regarding this issues and how the prime minister will take further step in regards to the this issue.

I see a lot of moral commitment from the Prime Minister to put his resignation forward in regards to the corruption.

Alam's trial awaits verdict

The Congress leader and former MP Aftab Alam, has been accused of killing more than 20 people during the first election of constitution assembly on April 9, 2008.

Having the insecurity of loosing the election he planned explosion at various location. They captured various booth with the help of various security forces officer and won the election.

Things went wrong while during assembling, the bombs exploded at his farm house, killing three people and injuring many. This created an unwanted situation where victims were injected with drugs and than thrown into the furnace along with the dead bodies. It is estimated that more than 20, including the professional bomb makers from India were torched in the furnace.

The 12-year-old incident was revived with a charge-sheet that was filed against him on November 4 for the blast and subsequent murders of the injured and witnesses. NC leader Alam, who was arrested on October 13, by the Rautahat District Police Office played a crucial role in investigating the infamous Rajpur blast. After the Alam’s arrest, more eye witnesses of the blast rerecorded their statement against Alam.

As police investigations continues more big names and connection have been surfaced. This is huge question in context of Nepal’s Human Right’s abuse cases among the many which has been suppressed from past many decades.

Human Rights Abuse and killing is not justified by any context and guilty has to be brought by the book. Now the question is what next ……………….

Krishna Mahara Sexual Harassment Controversy

Krishna Bahadur Mahara speaker of the House of Representative of Nepal resigned following an accusation of rape by Roshani Shahi. The controversy was already getting in the news when one after the other sequence of videos and interview release by Roshani has created a situation of
what happened that night.

First Roshani was interview by hamrokura.com which published a report on September 30, where Roshani accuses Mahara of raping her in her own residence. The report speaks how Mahara came to her rented apartment located at Tinkune on Sunday evening and raped her. She talks loud about the details of the incident and further shows the communication happening in between them.
After few days she reports in a press conference of the allegation to be false. The whole country was shocked with what happened that night and suddenly this week she files a case in the police station of attempt to rape against Krishna Mahara.

This case clearly raises few things

3. Impact of such acts upon public
4. Role and scope of Nepal Police

The question here is not just about an allegation its a broader issues of how and Roshani has been changing her statement. The main question why she is doing so ? Is it because of the security issue or is it that Nepal police has not been able to do the procedural work?

Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Yogesh Bhattarai was trolled in social media site for being ignorant of being late to arrive at the Nepalgunj Airport. It was acknowledged that minister Bhattrai arrived late to catch the last Buddha Air flight to Kathmandu, during his visit to Dolphin Festival at Tikapur.
The flight was scheduled to take off at 6:41 PM and was delayed because of the late arrival of the minister and the passengers took it to social media with the whole episode gone viral on social media.

The video highlights the minister dealing with infuriated passengers with ease the fight started when the minister took it to social media and confronted the issue.

This issue certainly highlights the mentality of the leaders in Nepal and how they treat public with no remorse against what people are going through.

Guthi Bill and the Newars

It is really amazing how people find unity at times of need, likewise in Nepal, millions of people gather around the Mandala, Maitighar to show discontentment against the Guthi Bill. The bill was proposed by the Oli Government in the parliament that directly targets the present tradition of Guthi which has been facilitating the various Jatras and festivals in the valley.

On its backdrop Guthi tradition is also related with people’s daily lives and livelihood particularly Newari community which stand as a very good example of a community driven society.

Though the bill has shown a version of Unity factor against the bill but on the same the bill has also highlighted a threat of polarization of communal voice. The Newari community has been voicing the issue of the bill being a direct attack against their community which has provoked a sense of racialism and discrimination.

Yes, the community has every right to stand up for their rights and fight but criticizing and shouting against the other communities is not a question of who is indigenous and who is not. Kathmandu as a city is as equal and important for every individual who has lived and been a part of it. Saying to be a Newar and being part of the kathmandu heritage is being Racist. The communal voices of the Newari people has been long seen as a voice of racism than for identity.

The point is not about just guthi, the point here is about identity and how we will maintain the cultural harmony. Time and again the community brings out the communal voice of kathmandu valley being theirs which is purely unjustified.

Press Freedom Marginalized in Nepal

The new Media council Bill which is currently under review of the parliament has been hugely criticized by the civil society group regarding threatening press freedom in Nepal. The Media Council bill aims to replace the existing Press Council Act, with more authoritative and concrete action against errors and mistakes.

It seems funny that every time a new bill or law comes out there is a huge outrage from the civil society that strives to find solution for existence of basic rights. Likewise, the new Media Council Bill proposed by the secretary at the Ministry of Information and Communication has been hugely challenged by the press freedom experts and civil society group.

The question that arises here is what is the main cause that every time a policy or law is subsequently ready for practice there is a huge voice that comes from the civil society fighting back against safeguarding their rights.

The problem that lies here is the policy making process and how it is kept secret and hidden with assumption and condition. The overall public policy process is facilitated in a limited approach of very limited so called experts. This results more towards rigidity of limited few so called experts and parliamentary leaders who have no idea and repercussion of the law or policy. This shows the lack of visibility, transparency, openness and accountability. Apart from that what amazes is these policies and laws are not based on any types of surveys or research either its recommended by an INGO or political leader who have limited knowledge.

Some of the challenges of public policy process of Nepal are listed below

1. Limited knowledge and lack of expertise
2. Lack of accountability
3. Lack of openness and transparency
4. Lack of democratic values
5. Lack of Research and survey
6. Limitation of understanding
7. Lack of collaboration

The currently bill has a limited approach and escapes the responsibility and credibility factor of the media council. Similarly, the bill also secures the provision of the council members to be sacked by the government at any point of time.

Some challenges of Media Council Bill 2019 are

Section 18 (1) recommends a fine from 25000 to Rs 1 million on media outlets, editors, publishers and journalists if found guilty of damaging someone’s reputation.
Section 18, Sub-section (2) states that the council can order the erring parties to pay compensation if the content in media damages the reputation of the affected party.
Section 17 of the bill proposes to suspend press pass of media persons and downgrade the classification of the concerned print media outlet for violating the code of conduct

Traffic jam at Mount Everest

Making a record in tourist session, this year Everest has top the charts in news with 381 permits issued from the Nepal Government with approximately another 140 permitted climbers attempting the peak from Tibet setting a record.
It is estimated that more than 700 summiteers concurred the Everest this year, which includes climbing Sherpas.

At least 20 people have died climbing in the Himalayas this season who died on 8,000-meter peaks this year.

As per the guides and agencies the queues at the summit of Everest are not uncommon. This basically happens due to the unpredictable and sometimes narrow window of suitable climbing weather, which may result in many climbers attempting to reach the summit at the same time.

The biggest challenge for the summit is not just the government. The current challenge is the lack of collaboration among the various stakeholders which has resulted in a chaos in the management and operation of the Everest.

From dead bodies lying at awe to the level of garbage accompanying at the camps, Everest has become a dumping ground for the agencies, the summitters and guides.

The government is blamed all the time but what about the responsibility of the people who are earning billions, the guides and Sherpa who carry out the operation shouldn't they be vigilant about the activities of the travelers. And what about the the travelers who come from developed countries and display a disgraceful behavior of lack of responsibility in dumping their garbage at such heights.

Everest is a the property of the world, if we fail to realize this and keep argue about the responsibility among us. The Everest will turn into a time capsule of garbage with no turning back....................

Bidhya Devi Bhandari yet in new controversy with My Government statement

During the reading out program on Friday about the programs for the fiscal year 2019-20 in the joint session of the House of Representatives and the National Assembly, President Bidya Devi Bhandari has been hugely criticized for referring my government in her statement for more than 21 times.

She has been hugely criticized by intellectuals and other platform as the phrase repeats contentiously during her two-hour speech in the Parliament. On social networking sites, people expressed dismay and demanded an apology from the president for her choice of words.

The speech which was prepared for her must have been checked and confirmed by the President's office. So what went wrong or was it intentional .

Argument

She is the president of the Country and her prior association are limitation in front of her current roles and responsibilities of president of Nepal
She with her position and power cannot be entitled or associated with any political party or group
Her role and responsibilities as the head of the state makes her an individual

With such practice the president reputation and name certainly has challenges and reputation issue.

The Article 2 of the constitution of Nepal states that the sovereignty and state authority of Nepal shall be vested in Nepali people. “It shall be exercised in accordance with the provisions set forth in this constitution,” the article states.

Rachana Gurung Sharma and Miss Nepal Controversy

During the Miss Nepal 2019 selection process Rachana Gurung Sharma who is the official choreography of the pageant has been questioned by viewers for her derogatory remarks towards a contestant.

Ashmita Maharjan, a 22-year-old computer engineering student was grilled for her looks and for not wearing make up during her audition for the pageant.

The conversation started when Rachana questioned the contestant for not wearing makeup and showing up in glasses instead of contact lenses during the audition

The Video clip went viral when people started trolling Rachana for her rude attitude and derogatory remarks.

Bomb Explosion in Kathmandu, Nepal

Kathmandu shook to terror after a unknown Improvised Explosive Device(IED) bomb exploded in Nakkhu, Lalitpur, on Friday. At least three people have been reported injured after an explosion occurred near the gate of the headquarters of Ncell a company of Axiata Group at around 7:55 PM on 22 February 2019.

The injured have been identified as Urusha Manandhar, 25, from Kavre; Pratiksha Khadka, 26, from Baghdol; and Singh Prasad Gurung, 49, from Lamjung district. Manandhar and Gurung are receiving treatment at Nepal Mediciti hospital in Nakkhu while Khadka. It has also been reported that Singha Prasad Gurung died in the hospital.

It is so lame and sad to see why people use bombs to hurt people in the name of people. It is wrong to shed blood of innocent people in the name of politics. Such politics and people should be charged against humanity and should never be given any justification for the killing.

Criminalization of Social media in Nepal IT bill

The new Information Technology bill has a provision to fine up to Rs 1.5 million and jail term of five years or both for posting or propagating objectionable contents on social networking sites. Nepal from past few years was struggling to introduce a new IT bill as the previous Electronic Transaction Act 2008 was proving to be inefficient and was lacking to address various definitive issues of the IT world.
In this view the new IT bill first draft came in discussion from last year where there were hot debates about the controversial sections of protecting civil rights and restriction that is being imposed by the government. Civil society organizations have been struggling to find a more transparent and open mid solution to the bill giving space of safeguarding people’s right and interest.

The new bill also enforces social networking sites to register themselves with Nepal Government within the stipulated time frame. In case they fail to register they can be permanently blocked in the country.

In addition to this, if social networking sites fails to cooperate in terms of the objectionable contents from removable, they would be entitled to fine up to Rs 30,000 and jail term up to three years or both.

With the new IT Bill the criminalization of social media is seen as a major threat against fundamental right of Freedom of Expression (FoE) and Freedom of Speech.

Section of IT bill that criminalize social media are
Section 94 (1) (b) No one should write anything to promote caste discrimination or untouchability, disrespect labor, incite anybody to commit crime, promote acts undermining peace and security, publish or propagate illegal things or act or incite others to act against public decency and morality.

Section 94 (1) (c) No one should write anything to tease, confuse, undermine, discourage, reprimand anybody or to create hatred and enmity or mislead other persons.

Section 94 (1) (d) No one should sell or advertise illegal things or demonstrate or publish such things.

Section 94 (1) (e) No one should write anything with the motive of assassinating anybody’s character or defaming anybody.

Nepal Government putting a restriction on Social Media will not stop people from raising concern over corruption and Malpractices ....

In democracy people should have the right to speak in and against. if there is no freedom of expression then there is no feel of democracy.

Most importantly, our constitution ensures FoE and FoS as fundamental rights.

Better create policies for tackling corruption rather than preventing people from voicing...

Prime Minister KP Oli above law: Tootle and Pathao Controversy

Recently, with the riff of Tootle and Pathao, the statement of Prime minister to stop action against Tootle, Pathao is against Law. He is just the head of the state and his role should be promulgating law. Directly interfering in official action is a question of his authority. He has breached his authority to influence against an illegal act. His intervention should have been to create feasible situation towards amending the law and to make people follow. How could he direct the official not to take action?

Is he above law ?

According to vehicle and transportation act 2049 article 8 sub section 2 , "It is illegal for any private number plate to transport people by taking money."
It clearly says there is no provision for services like tootle and Pathao to exist in our transportation system. When the law has no provision how come such services have legal existence ?

Tootle and Pathao are private services which have various functionality in terms of their service. It is not as easy as a taxi service. They have layers of functionality with drivers and customers. This can be an issue in terms of insurance, tax, and various other accountability issues. Apart from that these service use technology and various web application so there is a need of cyber assurance as well.
