Jake Cuenca co-hosts Sarah G. Live this Sunday

Sarah Geronimo is all set to give another world-class concert performance tonight in her solo musical-variety show Sarah G. Live.

After bonding with Derek Ramsay and Xian Lim in the past episodes, Sarah will once again team up with another Kapamilya hunk as Jake Cuenca joins the fun as this week’s guest co-host.

Exactly a year ago on March 11, 2011, Japan was brought down to its knees by one of the most catastrophic string of natural disasters the world has ever seen.

Citizens ran to safety as magnitude nine earthquake struck eastern Japan. Minutes after the quake, a huge tidal wave made its way into cities — engulfing everything on its way including villages, buildings, ships and cars.

Today, as the world remembers the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake, GMA News and Public Affairs, in partnership with Japan’s TV-Iwate, revisits the places most affected by the tsunami and brings home powerful images of Japan’s devastation and recovery.

Kara David steps into the ghost towns of Iwate and Miyagi — two of the three prefectures badly hit by the 3/11 tsunami — to document stories of great struggle and triumph in the face of adversities.

In Rikuzentakata City, Kara meets a Filipina whose family lives in a temporary home called “prefabricated housing.” Months after the disaster, the Japanese government provided these temporary homes for families whose houses were washed away by the giant tidal waves.

In Kesennuma City, she meets a group of Filipinas who gathered together to form a makeshift radio station in hopes of disseminating information to affected kababayan at a time when they say information was not within reach.

Not far away, in Ofunato City, Kara talks to Filipinas who were declared “missing” at the height of the disaster. A year after the tragedy, many of them still rely on volunteers and kind souls for aid as they slowly rebuild their lives.

In the Philippines, with wounds still healing from the earthquake that hit the province of Negros last February, and with the memory of Sendong still in the minds of many, Kara brings home stories to prove there never will be a shortage of hope amidst all the chaos.

Pagsibol ng Pag-asa, an SNBO special documentary on the aftermath of the Japan tsunami and earthquake, airs tonight after I-Bilib on GMA 7.

Aga Muhlach's Pinoy Explorer explores Bicol

Aga Muhlach discovers the great adventures in Bicol in the upcoming episodes of TV5’s Pinoy Explorer. In the first part titled Isla-Amazing, Aga goes to Camarines Sur and visits the beautiful Caramoan Islands to experience wake-boarding and mountain off-road driving.

"Whitney" is a show that takes a hilarious look at modern day couples. Centered around the relationship of Whitney (Whitney Cummings) and Alex (Chris D'Elia), a happily unmarried couple. The two have been together for three years and have no plans of getting hitched any time soon. This setup gets a mixed response from their friends who each have their own opinion on the complicated topic of love. Afraid that they will fall into “relationship boredom”, Whitney looks for various ways to keep the flames of love alive.

GMA-7 to air The Hurricane's fights

GMA Network, Inc. signed Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton, current IBA and WBO Women’s Super Bantamweight champion, to a three-fight deal beginning with her upcoming match against Argentinean Yesica “La Leona” Marcos on March 18 at 11 a.m.

The forthcoming fight is in defense of Ana’s WBO Super Bantamweight title and will be held in Yesica’s hometown in San Martin, Argentina.

Ana, who has always been identified as a Kapuso fighter, is pleased to be reunited with GMA Network and describes the experience as refreshing. “I am happy my promoter, Allan Tremblay of Orion Sports, and I are one with GMA Network again,” said the Filipina fighter.

Ted Failon to discuss pollution this Saturday

Metro Manila is one of the world’s five most polluted cities, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Filipinos are facing health hazards brought about by unclean air. What is the government doing to address this? Is the Clean Air Act being implemented well in the country?

Today at 4:30 p.m. on ABS-CBN’s Failon Ngayon, Ted Failon investigates the issue and looks at what the government is doing to address the problem and how the Clean Air Act has been implemented.

Ted listens to the story of Rosa, a street vendor, and Randy, a jeepney driver as they share how they endured dealing with air pollution every day while doing their jobs and how it actually made them ill.

ABS-CBN finds meaning in inspiring Filipinos through shows that reflect the media conglomerate’s values that affirm the viewers’ self-worth and recognize their strengths.

This was the key message that ABS-CBN chairman and CEO Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III imparted to the participants of this year’s Pinoy Media Congress (PMC) held recently at Colegio De San Juan De Letran, Manila. The event had the Kapamilya network hosting about 1,000 mass communication and journalism students from all over the country.

“The fulfillment that you experience by doing something that has a positive impact on the lives of people is a more lasting reward than the glamour and the pay,” Lopez said.

Lopez told the future media practitioners that media can bring about change by communicating the right values, advocacies as well as fair and honest information. He said there’s still a lot of work to be done to make the Philippines a better place and that work awaits young people who will be joining the media industry soon.

Other ABS-CBN leaders who shared their media expertise in the seventh edition of PMC were digital terrestrial TV marketing head Miguel Mercado who talked about the benefits that digital TV while news and current affairs head Ging Reyes who stressed that the tenets of journalism remain amid multi-platform technologies.

Star Cinema concept development group head Enrico Santos tackled how Philippine cinema can be socially responsible, while creative communications head Robert Labayen imparted creative ways to connect with Filipino viewers via advocacy plugs.

ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. managing director Gina Lopez was a big hit among the young crowd who cheered “Yes to Life! No to Mining in Palawan!” for her cause, while regional network group head Jerry Bennett and RNG news and online business head Charie Villa turned their closing into an on-the-spot contest about the Choose Philippines campaign wherein they gave away prizes to lucky delegates who answered trivia questions correctly.

Hiram na Puso scores big time on pilot episode

GMA's newest afternoon drama Hiram na Puso debuted with very high ratings in both Mega Manila and in the National Urban Philippines according to data from the more trusted television ratings provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement (TAM).

Hiram na Puso’s pilot episode, which aired on March 5, led in the national ratings, gaining a household rating of 14.9 pts. and an audience share of 40.6%, while its nearest competitor ABS-CBN’s Mundo Man ay Magunaw only gained 9.2 pts. and an audience share of 25.1%. This is based on data provided by the Nielsen National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM).

In the viewer-rich Mega Manila, Hiram na Puso’s ratings lead during its debut was even more pronounced with a household rating of 17.5 pts. and an audience share of 46.3%, while its competitor only got 7.4 pts. and an audience share of 19.7%. The densely populated Mega Manila area is considered a bailiwick of GMA-7.

Since his launching soap Mula Sa Puso last year, JM’s career as a lead actor has been on a roll. Warner Bros. Pictures' new 3D epic adventure “Wrath of the Titans” revisits the Greek mythology first explored in the global box office hit “Clash of the Titans.” The new film is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and sees the return of Sam Worthington (“Avatar”) as Perseus, as well as Ralph Fiennes (the “Harry Potter” films) as Hades and Liam Neeson (“Taken”) as Zeus.

A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus — the demigod son of Zeus — is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius.

Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon (Danny Huston). The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld.

Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus’ godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramírez), switch loyalties and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans’ strength grows stronger as Zeus’ remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth.

Telling this story on a grand scale, with an acclaimed ensemble cast—in immersive 3D no less—was an opportunity the South African filmmaker Liebesman could not turn down. “To be honest, this is my favorite genre,” says Liebesman. “It’s also the chance to do an old school Hollywood movie where you have amazing actors, big stars, and a big canvas. It’s a huge opportunity for any director.”

“Clash of the Titans” was released in 2010 and its blend of Greek mythology and sweeping action brought to life with the very latest technology available to contemporary filmmakers proved hugely popular with audiences worldwide. The latest film—written by Dan Mazeau & David Leslie Johnson, from a story Greg Berlanti & David Leslie Johnson & Dan Mazeau, based on characters created by Beverley Cross—presents an human story against the immense backdrop of the mythological Gods and Titans.

“The drama in our story is really important,” says Liebesman. “And we have all worked really hard on the script. With a movie like this you want people to be entertained and thrilled and, at the same time, you have such tremendous actors up there on the screen so there’s a great opportunity to make the audience really feel for these characters.”

Given the mythology already invested in the films, Liebesman is understandably keen to stamp his own mark on “Wrath of the Titans,” approaching the film with a clear, strong vision for a new beginning. “I wanted to treat the second film as its own thing,” he explains. “Of course, there are relationships that are continued from the first film—like Perseus and Zeus, for example—that have to be respected. But our approach was to look at this as its own entity within that world. I don’t want to betray anything that has been set up but, at the same time, I don’t want to be chained to whatever was done before.”

Liebesman arrived on the project fresh off the alien invasion action thriller “Battle Los Angeles.” As with that film, given the scope and scale of “Wrath of the Titans,” the director hopes to ground the action in real dirt and sand. “For me, what was interesting was to make a film in a gritty, grounded style juxtaposed with the kind of fantasy elements that you would see in a story like this,” he explains. “I enjoy making movies that I would go and see on a Friday night. This is a big movie and I want people to have a good time when they see it. That’s the satisfaction for me.”

Christian Bautista seeks love from ABS-CBN

Asian singing sensation Christian Bautista said that he love ABS-CBN who gave him his much needed break in Philippine recording industry through the Kapamilya Network's singing competition 'Star in a Million', wherein he placed 3rd runner up. ABS-CBN then gave him exposures through regular appearances as a mainstay at ASAP, honing his acting skills through Anne Curtis' first lead Kapamilya teleserye 'Kampanerang Kuba', and guestings at various TV shows.

However, as competition is getting tougher these days, Christian asks for ABS-CBN to love him as well. He laments that his current twice-thrice production numbers per week on ASAP 2012 are not enough to really showcase himself as a musician. He wants other avenues to showcase his talents other than singing. Lately, he made himself famous once again throughout Asia thru 'Kitchen Musical.' He said, that non-acting singers are now acting in order for their music to be known. Christian was last seen acting on the silver screen via 'Kampanerang Kuba' nearly a decade ago.

Christian has still a valid contract with ABS-CBN until August of this year. He said that TV5 has asked what he wanted them to offer him. to which he replied,'I'm just looking for ways to showcase my music.' Other than giving that statement, Christian said that he will not entertain negotiations until his contract with the Kapamilya Network expired. Furthermore, he will continue fulfilling his obligations to avoid conflicts.

After being bombarded with negative criticisms over her 'racist' FHM Philippines cover, Kapuso actress Bela Padilla finally aired her side via an interview with Mishal Husain of BBC. Bela said that 'racism was totally out of their heads' when they conceptualized and made the photo shoot. The caption, 'Stepping Out of the Shadows' and being surrounded with models painted in black were meant to emphasize her 'coming of age' as an actress. She went on saying that the said shot was meant 'to change her image from the younger bracket to an older one.' Bela asked everyone to read first the article in order to really understand why FHM Philippines chose the said 'controversial' caption.

Meanwhile, FHM Philippines has already apologized for creating a social stir with their latest issue. FHM Philippines said, 'In our pursuit to come up with edgier covers, we will strive to be more sensitive.' Furthermore, FHM Philippines has already recalled all copies of the said issue and is now printing a new one.

After making a big switch from being a Kapamilya into a Kapatid last year, Megastar Sharon Cuneta will be hosting an afternoon daily program on TV5 by March 2012. Sharon said that her new show is 'Mas malaki ang puso, mas mae-enjoy niyo po. Mas makabuluhan compared to all the shows I've done.'

Aside from her daily show, according to her contract, Sharon will also host a reality show and a film.

With an alleged Php1 billion five-year contract with TV5, it's now Sharon's turn to prove that she's very much worthy of that offer. As for her shows, to bring the much needed ratings and advertisers for the still lagging TV5.

GMA Network snatches 9 nominations at 2012 NY Festivals

GMA Network’s News and Public Affairs proves its world-class caliber again with a total of nine nominations — five coming from GMA News TV and four from GMA 7 — in the highly-prestigious 2012 New York Festivals (NYF).

Less than a year after its launch, GMA News TV makes a definitive statement with its documentaries achieving finalist status at the NYF.

News TV’s docudrama Pluma: Si Rizal, Ang Dakilang Manunulat (Rizal, The Great Writer), a historic piece that traces the evolution of Rizal’s writings, was chosen as finalist in the History and Society category.

Front Row and Reel Time, News TV’s groundbreaking weekend documentaries, received two nominations each. Front Row’s Bente Dos (Twenty-Two), narrates the life of a family in Manila’s slums, with 22 children, while its Yaman Sa Basura (Child Urban Miners) tells the story of twin boys risking life and limb while working in an urban mine. Reel Time’s Lusong (Live to Dive) shows father and son divers racing to earn enough over a summer to send the boy to school, while Tira (Infected) relates cases of young teens who suffer from sexually transmitted diseases.

GMA 7 nominees include the public affairs special Report Card. Bannered by GMA News pillar Mike Enriquez and Kapuso leading man Dingdong Dantes, the special examines why the country’s educational system still struggles to make the grade.

Getting the nod in the Nature and Wildlife category is Born to be Wild’s The Born Expeditions Finale. In the episode, the Born team documents Thai environmentalists’ efforts to propagate a giant freshwater stingray locally known as prakaben while another group embarks on an African expedition to see the great white shark.

Completing the list are two episodes of the country’s most awarded documentary program I-Witness. Gintong Putik takes Peabody Award-winning documentarist Kara David back to the town of Paracale in Camarines Norte where she meets a young boy burrowing for gold in the middle of a rice field. Fellow Peabody Award winner Jay Taruc features the harrowing account of burn victims in the second I-Witness entry dubbed Lapnos (Burn).

“These nine finalists may be promoted to Gold, Silver or Bronze during the current judging process,” says Rose Anderson, executive director of NYF.

The 2012 New York Festivals International Television and Film Awards received entries from over 40 countries. It is dedicated to both the TV and film industries and encourages next generation story-tellers to break new ground.

This year’s awards ceremony is scheduled on April 17 at The NAB Show in Las Vegas.

After hurdling the intense weekly culinary battles and impressing the Filipino public with their creations, the Final Four kiddie cooks Jobim, Kyle, Mika and Philip will rise to their final cooking challenge in the Junior MasterChef Pinoy Edition Finale: The Live Cook-off tomorrow night at 6.

Armed with months of training in the competitive arena of Junior MasterChef Pinoy Edition, the four talented kids will be preparing their dishes live at the Treston International College in a bid to become the first ever Junior MasterChef who will bring home P1M and a culinary scholarship.

Meanwhile, P500,000 will be awarded to the competition’s second placer, and P250,000 each to the third and fourth placers.

Host Judy Ann Santos and judges Chef Ferns, Chef Lau and Chef Jayps will be sampling and criticizing the kiddie cooks’ dishes, which will represent the skills and knowledge they have gained in the MasterChef kitchen.

To help the three judges decide, 100 people from different sectors of society will critique the recipes the Final Four will whip up in a separate but equally intense cooking test.

Junior MasterChef Pinoy Edition became the most watched show last Feb. 12 when it revealed Jobim, Kyle, Mika and Philip as the Final Four kiddie cooks. The episode garnered a 21.9 percent national TV rating, based on data from Kantar Media.

Meanwhile, Pancake House restaurant serves dishes inspired by the top-rating kiddie cooking reality show such as cabbage lumpia in coconut breading, rice in ampalaya silog, porksilog steak and tofu eggplant salad.
