2010-06-27T16:05:00.001-07:00

My internship at Image Works ended on 18.06.2010, I'd like to thank everyone at Image Works and AIESEC Kyoto for your help and support in the past 4.5 months.

I especially want to thank Sawada san for the ichiban internship at Image Works, thank you for helping me with Japanese and for giving me the chance to learn about Japanese business culture. I also want to thank your family Yuko san and Taku for all the nice memories, and I look forward to meeting you all again very soon!

I really appreciate everything aiesec Kyoto has done for me, especially Hiroyuki and Taku, who have helped me a lot in visa, accommodation, as well as every little thing in life.

Lastly, I want to thank everyone at Image Works, especially Miki for always putting a smile on Shu Mei's face. I was so happy to be in the office everyday, because there I got to see all the kawaii & gakuii staff at Image Works & ITC! :) YOSH!

Thank you for the best farewell party, it made my internship perfect from day 1 to the very last second.

Last 2 weeks at Image Works

2010-06-07T23:26:00.000-07:00

It's already 8th June today...
I received my last salary payment...

Only 10 days of work left at Image Works, and I am slowly preparing to go back to Vienna.

I have already finished the market research for Japanese language schools and their affiliated agencies in China.

Now, I'm trying to finish up the translation work for the website content.
I really hope the translation will be useful for Image Works in creating an English website. Or Chinese too.
I believe, if there is an English/ Chinese version of the website, we can attract more customers, especially those who do not speak Japanese.

In Japan, it can be difficult to get internet access if you don't speak Japanese. Because a lot of internet agencies only speak Japanese.
So I hope Image Works/PC Support/ITC can help these people in the future and add value to society; just like its mission statement says.

Time

2010-06-03T23:16:00.000-07:00

It's June.
I cannot believe time goes by so quickly, I'm leaving on the 21st.

Starting next monday, it will be my last 2 weeks at Image Works... how I wish I can stay longer!

In the past 4 months, everyone has been very kind to me.
I am very very thankful that I have found this Job because Sawada san is a very kind and understanding person. I have gained a lot of experiences and seen many new things. Mochiron, also many oishii na tabemono mo tabemashita! :)

At work, I have mainly done market research and translation for the website and PowerPoint presentations; I really hope they will be useful for Image Works in the future.

Sadly, one of my colleagues who is Chinese has left the company.
I will wait for Haga san about our next step in the market research on Monday.

Also, on 13 June, AIESEC Kyoto will hold an Internship Interview-Meeting with Image Works. I will attend with Sawada san and we will present to you about our company and my internship. If you are interested, please leave a comment below and I will give you more information. It will be in Kyoto University building.
See you then!

Construction Site Visit

2010-06-03T00:58:00.000-07:00

Image Works Office is located in Building 6 of Kyoto Research Park.
There is a new building 9 that is under construction.
It looks very cool and Sawada san is interested in the building.
Today, we were invited to visit the Building 9 that is still under construction.
We put on the protection helmets and gloves and went up and down the new unfinished Building 9. It was a fun experience.
Building 9 is very spacious. It also has a very good view.
From the balcony of the offices, one can truly relax on a working day.
The roof-top is a good place for enjoying the street view nearby.

Building 9 will be finished in several months.
Sadly, I will not be able to see it as I am already leaving Kyoto in 18 days...
I will miss everything here.

My Intercultural Experience in Kyoto

2010-05-27T21:30:00.000-07:00

One of the aims of my internship in Japan is to deepen my intercultural experiences.
I am interested in different cultures, not only learning about them, but also experiencing them myself.

I chose to come to Japan so that I can live in the culture that I wanted to know more about.

I therefore attended many cultural events in Kyoto during my stay here.
A few classical examples include the Aoi Matsuri, a parade of people in Heian times costumes on the streets from one Schrine to another, to celebrate its traditions.
Another one was the Three Boats Festival in Arashiyama area.
For both festivals, the streets were packed with not only tourists, but many local Japanese people, both young and old.
I am touched by the city's cultural awareness and respect for its own traditions.
With today's modernization, most teenagers and middle-aged people tend to neglect their background, traditions and cultures.
I am surprised that in Japan, a modern and civilized country as it is, still pay great respect to their traditions and cultures. I think it is a very positive thing and is a reason behind its prosperity and security, because they show great respect for their country's values, traditions and culture.
Traditional practices are well-kept, especially in Kyoto.
In down-town Kyoto, you will see numerous people still dressed in traditional Japanese clothing (Kimonos) with their hair set and in their wooden slippers. Not only old people dress this way, it is also popular among teenagers to wear Kimonos. One can easily see their pride in their nation and I would have been just as proud as well had I been Japanese, as the Kimonos and accessories are very beautiful indeed.

Cultural events like Geisha (or Geiko in Kyoto) tea ceremonies in tea houses; Geisha dance festivals etc, are still practiced today.
The Japanese traditional practices and culture are well-preserved until today, and I am glad they are because they make Japan the special country it is today.

New Staff at Image Works

2010-05-18T22:23:00.000-07:00

Recently, we have many new staffs at Image Works from the College students intake.
I was happy to have met many new comers of my age, they are active and enthusiastic about being a part of our company.

Many of them speak Chinese, I am impressed by their language skills.
One of the new staffs at PC Support is Chinese, and we spoke Chinese together.
We are currently working together in a project researching for Japanese Language schools throughout Japan and in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong as well.

Being multi-lingual is a benefit to a good career in today's global business world.
Image Works is in need of both Chinese, Korean and English speaking staff.
So if you are interested in IT, customer service, sales and marketing and you speak Chinese, Korean or English, please contact our company!
For more information about us and contact methods, please visit our company's website here.

Image Works at 京おどり

2010-05-12T00:02:00.000-07:00

April is the month for Kyoto Dance Festival - 京おどり.

As Sawada-san is friends with Maiko-san and Geiko-san and is close with many Tea-Houses in Kyoto, he invited Image Works company staff to watch the shows.

京おどり takes place every year for about 2 weeks.
Image Works Staff got a chance to visit the show with Sawada san.
Sawada san gave us a ride, and invited everyone to lunch and the show with him.

"It is important to keep close to my company staff. It is a good opportunity to talk to my staff during outings and when we have lunch together since we don't talk too much in the busy office." Sawada san explained why he bought 10 tickets everyday for 2 weeks for his company staffs to see the show.

I think it is very considerate of him to bring staffs to the show.
As I have heard, it is not easy to get tickets and many people have never seen the show.
Staffs were happy and look forward to this day and so was I, I had such a great day with Image Works at Kyo-Odori!

ありがとうございました, さわださん!

Company Presentation to College Students (Kyoto)

2010-05-10T22:56:00.000-07:00

Today, I attended the Company Presentation in Kyoto with Sawada san where he introduced Image Works Group to prospective University Graduates.

I helped in preparing the room and at the reception.
College students arrived early, about 20 minutes earlier, all looking smart in their ironed suits with their neatly written CV ready to make a good first impression.

It must be competitive job market for college students as they begin their job search about 1 year before their graduation.
Image Works Group recruits students several times every year.
After the company presentation, outstanding students are invited to rounds of written exams and interviews.
The selection process is more or less standard in most Japanese firms.

As I attended the presentation, I could feel Sawada san's strong spirit and belief in Image Works Group.
He is enthusiastic about doing business, and is very lively at the office.
Eventhough April and May are the busiest periods, he managed to find the time from his busy schedule to give a detailed and energetic 2-hour-presentation to students.

I hope all students got to understand Image Works Group better from today's presentation and I wish them all the best in their application.

If you are interested in joining Image Works Group, feel free to visit our company's website and keep yourself updated to the next Presentation we organize!

Working Life in Japan

2010-05-09T23:42:00.000-07:00

One of my internship goals it to learn Japanese business culture by working in Japan.

Everyday, I see many Japanese business people and through talking with them I think that they are very hard-working and contribute a huge part of their lives to the company.

Life in Japan isn't easy, especially with the fast-paced of life, strong competition and rapid developments.
Doing business in Japan require strategies, patience and strength.

I once attended a contract deal meeting with my boss, Sawada san, with different companies, including NTT (one of Japan's leading telecom), Plala etc.
In order to close a deal, meetings after meetings were held to finalize things.
I first thought that too much time is spent on meetings as time is very precious in Japan;
but I learnt to know that it is time well-spent as both parties understand another's needs more after each meeting and aim to accommodate each other better in the next meeting.

The search of a "win-win solution" in the Japanese business culture is one of the most respectable value in my opinion.

Business at Image Works - PC Support

2010-05-06T21:26:00.000-07:00

My time at PC Support...

PC Support is a part of Image Works Group.
PC Support assist customers to contract for internet/telephone services.

In Japan, it is uncommon to apply for internet directly at the internet providers because the process is often complicated and there are many different campaigns available.

PC Support is there to satisfy this need. Customers who are looking for new homes will get to consult PC Support already at the Property Agency (Fudousan).
With information like new home address from Fudousan, PC Support then checks for the best available internet services and contact the customers by phone.

PC Support not only gives the best advice and detailed information about various internet campaigns, it also assists in contracting as well as providing free internet set-up services. With certain additional charges, customers can also join PC Support so they will never have to worry about computer problems as we also provide technical support to our customers!

This way customers can lay back and relax and moving to a new home can be completely stress-free!
I think it is very thoughtful of PC Support to have designed this service flow.
PC Support staff also work very hard in maintaining good customer relationships with our clients and agencies.

During my week at PC Support, I witnessed how hard working and dedicated the staff were.
Everyday, they travel from 9 - 18:00, very often over-time until 20 - 21:00 around Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Kameoka by public transport to visit various clients and agencies. This type of personal service keeps PC Support close and updated with the agencies.
I respect the staff at PC Support very much, as they work for such a long time on foot, in Winter as well as in heavy rain. They are such hard-working and serious workers.

For new staff, don't be terrified.
Traveling around for work can also be fun, as you get to move and see many things along the way and can make a working day appear short and interesting! Also, when meeting with various clients, you get to socialize and talk to different people, this can be enjoyable too!
So if you are outgoing and enjoy talking with people, be sure to apply for PC Support!

2nd Week at Image Works & Weekend with Miki

2010-04-13T23:30:00.000-07:00

In my second week at Image Works, I mainly did market research work.
As the company plans to expand its market in the foreigners sector of Japan, I was responsible in looking for property agencies of our target group.

It was quite difficult as it is not easy to look for property agencies that have English websites, and we aimed at those with English websites as foreigners may not speak/read Japanese fluent enough to go to Japanese speaking property agencies.

Through my research, I understood the property lease policies in Japan better, as well as the basic amenities and common fees and procedures involved.
In order to rent an apartment in Japan, application is quite complicated and a guarantor is needed.
This is quite different from my home country or in the other countries I have resided in.

In the weekend, my colleague Miki san invited me to see the Kinoshita Circus at Momoyama, after that, we went to the Fushimi Inari Shrine where thousands of torii were lining up the path up the mountain, it was breath-taking. I had a great day with Miki, and she was very nice and friendly. We communicated mainly in English since my Japanese is quite poor, I was so happy to know more about her. She used to be an international buyer and has traveled almost around the world! Sugoi ne!

My 22nd Birthday! ^^

2010-03-31T22:59:00.000-07:00

On 12.02 it was my 22nd Birthday.

The night before my birthday (11.02)...
KYOTO AIESEC members celebrated with me in the welcoming dinner they organized at a Japanese Grill Restaurant near Hyakumanbian close to Kyoto University.

The food was very yummy, I had my first okonomiyaki in Japan!
I also went to Kyoto University for the first time.
To my surprise, I got presents from Hiroyuki and Taku!
That was so nice of them! I like both of the presents very much!
It was also someone else's birthday, so we celebrated together.

Kyoto University at night.

This is a surprise present from Sawada san!
He gave it to Hiroyuki before he left for Shanghai so I could receive it in my birthday party!
It's a very cute Hello Kitty Hanadoll! =)

On my Birthday 12.02...
I had to work at PC Support with Hayami san.
She was very nice to have invited me for lunch at her favourite Italian restaurant!
I was surprised again that she bought me a very nice present!
I got 2 very cute handkerchiefs from her, she said its important for girls to have their own handkerchiefs as its not popular to dry your hands with tissue after you wash your hands in the restrooms.
I really love them, one of them was white in very good quality cotton from Celine, the edges were in pink lace, I love it.

After work...
I was asked to go back to Image Works Office, and I was SURPRISED the 3rd time when they brought out a candle-lit cake and wished me a happy birthday in the office!

I got a present from Takekuma san!
Hahah I was so surprised that it was from GUCCI! I was all O_O oh no, it's such an expensive present I cannot take it!

And... it turned out to be SENBEI (Japanese rice crackers) inside! hahahah !!!

Me with my colleagues at Image Works!

I had such a nice birthday this year.
Eventhough I was all by myself in Japan without my family, I felt very warm because my colleagues and friends in Japan were so kind and thoughtful to have organized all these for me. I am very touched that they took the time and effort to celebrate my birthday with me. Thank you! <3

A weekend with AIESEC Members

2010-03-28T23:56:00.000-07:00

AIESEC (the biggest international student-run organization supporting student mobility) has helped me out a lot even before my arrival in Japan, and needless to say, guided me in my life in Japan. I joined AIESEC when I was in Vienna, there I got access to an international online job data base where I found my opportunity to go on an AIESEC Exchange in Japan. AIESEC has offices around the world run completely by students, students work in teams supporting the AIESEC office. Internships are raised by the committees and AIESECers around the world can benefit from the database.

I was lucky to have found a matching internship from the database and contacted the AIESEC member who's responsible for the job in Japan (known as the TN Manager), Hiroyuki (my TN Manager) was helpful in many ways. He guided me throughout the application process, as well as information regarding life in Japan. We became good friends and I was also in contact with more members of AIESEC Kyoto through E-mail even before my arrival. They were very friendly and I am happy to have known them.

In my first weekend in Kyoto, they took me out to the Kyoto downtown, where the shopping streets were found and I was so excited to have seen many new things and people walking in their traditional Japanese kimonos!

Week 2

2010-03-25T01:30:00.000-07:00

Thank you for reading my blog!

This is an update of my second week of work at Image Works.

During the second week, I had the opportunity to attend the company's university students recruitment presentations.

I traveled with the company staff to Osaka for the first time and I was glad to be there. University students from around Osaka came to the presentations, and I was responsible in greeting them. They were young and ambitious, all showing enthusiasm in working for Image Works in the future. They came in formal business suits and presented their CVs at the reception area.

About 60 students came per presentation, and we held about 3 presentations everyday, each takes about 2 -3 hours.
The presentation begins with the welcoming speech from the President of Image Works, Sawada san. It is followed by the presentation of the individual representatives of the different departments of sub-companies about their respective departments.

After the students get a better picture of what Image Works group does, I was introduced in the closing speech by Sawada san. I also had a chance to self-introduce myself as an intern at Image Works, I mainly talked about my personal background, my motivation to work in Japan and in Image Works, and my duties at Image Works.

It was an amazing experience and I learnt by watching my colleagues present. They were all very good presenters and I realize group evaluation and team-spirit is highly respected in Japanese companies. I was glad to be part of the company and all our presentations were very successful.

Evaluation forms from students were filled out with comments and suggestions for the presentations. They were carefully studied and improvements were implemented already in the following presentations. The company is very fast and adaptive to changes. Image Works is very flexible.

In my next entry, I will continue to tell you about my internship journey at Image Works as well as my life in Japan, please keep reading!

Thank you for your support in advance!

Week 1

2010-03-10T00:06:00.000-08:00

Hi everyone,

Thank you for reading my blog.
I will update you with my 1st week of internship at Image Works Group.

Image Works Group includes several companies:
-Image Works Co., Ltd.
-ITC (IT Communications) Co., Ltd. (Internet contracting agency)
-PC Support Co., Ltd. (Technical support team)
-ECO Works Co., Ltd. (Introduction of Solar Panel for homes)

In my 1st week, I worked at PC Support Co., Ltd for a few days.
As the company contracts through a network of property agencies (Fudousan); I went with my colleague to visit them.

We work from 9:00 to 18:00 daily; sometimes, over-time work is necessary.
We traveled around Kyoto, Osaka, and several cities closeby to do follow-ups with contracts from property agencies.

Not only did I understand the work of PC Support Co., Ltd much better in those few days, I also went to many places and saw a lot more of Kyoto and its surroundings.
It was a new experience for me to take the city buses and trains.
Japan has a very developed transportation network, and it was very convenient to travel around.

Travel expenses are relatively high in Japan; but it is borne by the company.
We fill out a reclamation form after work everyday, and the transportation expenses paid will be refunded to us.

It was a great experience working in PC Support Co., Ltd.
My colleagues there were very kind and friendly.
They have helped me a lot despite my poor Japanese language skills.
I especially want to thank Hayami san for having taught me so many things and having been so nice to me.
The other employees have also been very nice.
I look forward to meeting them again in Hanami (the Japanese flower festival).

The unique Kyoto Tower near Kyoto Station (close to PC Support office).

The beautiful Kyoto Station.

The Kyoto City Bus stop.

Viewing terrace at Uji Station.

First day at Image Works

2010-03-09T23:20:00.000-08:00

Upon my arrival in Kyoto Japan on 07.02; I was picked up by AIESEC Kyoto LC Members together with my boss, Sawada san (president of Image Works group) at the airport.

Sawada san is a very friendly boss, which soothes the anxiety I had earlier about the internship. He has been very kind from the start.

Before coming to Kyoto, we have been in contact through emails.
He has arranged a cell-phone and various home appliances like table, carpet and microwave for me in advance to help make my life in Japan easier.

Not only did he offered us (me and aiesecers) a ride from the airport; he also organized a welcoming party for me on my first day of work.
He was understanding enough to have given me half a day off on my first day of work (the day after my arrival) as he knew that I was exhausted after my 20 hour flight from Vienna to Tokyo (connection) to Kyoto.

Dinner with aiesecers on my arrival night...

Taku and Hiroyuki with the menu

Green Tea Ice-Cream IS THE BEST! <3

08.02.2010
My TN Manager from AIESEC Kyoto (Hiroyuki, who helped make this internship possible) together with Taku (AIESEC member) have assisted me in adapting to my new life in Japan since my day 1 in Japan.

They helped me set up my room on the first night, showed me around my area, and came to show me the way to work.
They also participated in several meetings at Image Works and helped with translation since my Japanese skill is next to non-existent.

So Day 1 at Image Works, I was led by Hiroyuki and Taku to Image Works office.
My boss, Sawada san, was there to greet me.
The office was located in a nice commercial building close to Tanbaguchi JR Station.
The Image Works and ITC offices are next to one another on the same floor.

Being my first time in a Japanese company, I followed exactly what Hiroyuki and Taku did making sure I greeted everyone the correct way.
We bowed and greeted the employees, who were also very polite and bowed back with a smile. I felt very welcomed in the company.

After our 1st meeting discussing various organization matters and plans regarding my internship; we left for the restaurant where my welcoming party takes place.

About 15 people came and I was happy to have met them. They were so much fun to be with as they constantly joked around, which eased some worries I had earlier about not being able to fit in the company, etc,.
The dinner has bonded me closer with the company.
Eventhough it was difficult to overcome the language barrier, I felt ready to work in this company nevertheless.

Here are some pictures taken at the welcoming dinner.

Our oishii appetizer

Hahaha! My colleagues are so much fun!

I had a great time, thank you very much!
Gochisou sama deshita, Sawada san!
