When make-up artists can’t find satisfying tools to do their job, the discontentment may turn into a desire to develop their own products, and so we have Shu Uemura, Bobbi Brown and Laura Mercier to thank for arming us with some good stuff to make us look pretty.

The latest make-up brand to arrive in Thailand encourages women to be a little bit more ambitious, because why be pretty when you can be gorgeous?

That’s one principle of the “Jerrodisms” that Thai women will hear more about with the opening of Too Faced counters this week at Central Ladprao and Zen Department Store.

Too Faced was founded by Hollywood make-up artist Jerrod Blandino, whose goal was to offer foolproof beauty options. Since its debut in 1998, the brand claims that it had given the cosmetics industry many firsts, such as the original lip plumper called Lip Injection and its sister product, the Lash Injection, which is a mascara with cutting-edge tubing.

The American brand is also notable for retro-inspired packaging that caught the attention of Peangporn Suvarnpradip while she was shopping at Sephora.

“The packaging really appealed and later on I was impressed with the quality of the make-up. I searched for more information on the Too Faced website and saw a picture of Jerrod Blandino, and found him an interesting character,” recalled Peangporn, a marketer of four cosmetics brands before becoming Too Faced’s distributor in Thailand.

During a visit to the US, she amazingly bumped into Blandino at a kitchenware store in Newport Beach, California.

“It happened around one year after discovering Too Faced at Sephora. Jerrod was as much surprised as I was since he didn’t expect a foreigner to know him and his make-up brand,” she said of the chance meeting.

“It was destiny for me to meet Jerrod in order to introduce Too Faced to Thai women. Even though it’s an American brand, the face make-up range offers shades that match Asian skin and oil-free formulas for the humid climate.”

The brand is particularly notable for its make-up palettes that come with easy-to-follow instructions to create different looks.

The Natural at Night palette, for example, contains nine coordinating eyeshadows to create evening, classic and fashion looks. Blandino is also known for being a natural eye expert and another palette comes with hues to do the natural eye, which is one of the trickiest looks to achieve.

With tones inspired by flora, fauna and the beauty of nature, the spring 2012 collection called Natural Beauty is the latest in Blandino’s beauty arsenal to make women look gorgeous.

Fantasy writer Salvatore talks plot, characters

TOWNSEND — The man who killed Chewbacca spoke to North Middlesex Regional High School students.

New York Times bestselling fantasy author R.A. Salvatore didn’t literally do battle with the 7-foot 3-inch Wookie, but he did pen the 1999 novel “Vector Prime,” in which Chewie perishes on the planet Sernpidal in the opening days of the Yuuzhan Vong War.

While students on Jan. 6 posed questions about his brush with Chewbacca, his other writing and his life, Salvatore affably, at times humorously, took them through his processes and motivations. Born and raised in Leominster, he has written 53 novels across numerous series of varying lengths. As part of English curriculum in NMRHS teacher Brendan McNabb’s classes, students read a selections from “The legend of Drizzt Anthology” and “The Hunter’s Blades” trilogy as part of American literature and creative writing courses.

“His work is creative writing incorporated in a unique, different way, it helped students in coming up with ideas,” McNabb said. “My American literature classes took it well too, students learned a lot reading from a new genre.”

Though he read a lot when he was young, he fell in love with fantasy writing during the Blizzard of ’78, shut in for a week with J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.”

“School books they had given me to read beat reading and writing out of me,” Salvatore said. “I read Tolkien three or four times that week … I asked why didn’t they give me this to read instead of

‘Ethan Frome?’”

During his school years, explained Salvatore, he understood Shakespeare and Chaucer and other required readings, but always questioned conventional interpretations. It was the magic of Tolkien, however, that stayed with him. Next, he began creating his own fantasy world in his head and he eventually found that world needed to come out.

He attended Fitchburg State College for a bachelor’s in English and to began writing in 1982. After six months of pouring that world into a spiral notebook, surrounded by candles and listening to Fleetwood Mac’s “Tusk,” he had finished his first book.

“I thought that was how you did it,” Salvatore said. “At the end, my family celebrated with a bottle of champagne.”

“I didn’t write it to get published,” Salvatore told the students. “I wrote it for my grand- kids to read and understand Bob Salvatore. I wrote so I was not just a number. I wrote it to be remembered and make a difference.”

From there, his ideas were picked up by TSR, Inc. who developed “Dungeons and Dragons” and began publishing fiction based around the game in 1984. In 1988, he published his first novel, “The Crystal Shard.” By 1990 he had published “Streams of Silver” and “The Halfing’s Gem,” the latter being the first of his 22 New York Times bestsellers. The books made up the “Icewind Dale” trilogy and propelled him into a number of other volumes centered around the Forgotten Realms campaign setting and his well-known Dark Elf character Drizzt Do’Urden.

“Drizzt is someone I wish I had the courage to be,” Salvatore said.

The character was created in his first three books, and expanded upon in following “The Dark Elf” trilogy. He could be described as a non-archetypal dark elf, who goes against the evil ways of his race. After receiving one awful rejection letter early on in his career, Salvatore asked Robert Cormier, fellow author and Leominster native, for some advice.

“Character is more important than plot, he told me, if your readers love them, when you give them a hangnail, it puts people on the edge of their seat,” Salvatore said.

Like Drizzt, other characters and situations in his books draw from composites in his own life. Book four of the “DemonWars Saga,” “Mortalis,” was written during 2000-2001 when Salvatore’s brother Gary was dying of cancer. Events in the book mirror his own grieving process, and it is because of that Salvatore considers it among his finest work.

“Being a writer means standing naked before the world,” Salvatore said. “Writing fiction is lies, but you are telling the truth.”

Using the real world as a jumping off point gives Salvatore “boundaries of fantasy.” In his stories, there is magic, but no godlike magical happenstance. Events happen for a reason. In creating those fantastic ideas, he is very down to earth.

A senior creative writing student Laura DuBois, apparently a Chewie sympathizer, asked about Salvatore’s experience dealing with the novelization of “Star Wars.” He explained that Lucasfilm and Delray Books had come together to collaborate on novels about the “Star Wars” universe.

“I got the deal for the book and I thought, this is great,” Salvatore said. “Then they told me they wanted to kill Chewbacca, Lucas wanted to kill the Wookie, so he hired an Italian to do it.”

Around 1999, the year “Vector Prime” was published, Salvatore was attending a convention when Peter Mayhew, the towering actor who played Chewie, came up to his table and jokingly attacked him. Salvatore signed the book for Mayhew’s kids. Last week DuBois brought her copy as well.

When writing the book version of “Attack of the Clones,” Salvatore said he received fan mail saying: “I will forgive you for killing Chewie if you kill Jar Jar (Binks).” Chewie, Jar Jar, Drizzt and other characters that are apart of “Star Wars” or “Dungeons & Dragons” make up what is called a “shared world,” that is, areas with set histories and stories which Salvatore elaborates on.

Laureate Alpha Omicron Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met recently in the home of Virginia Sullivan, with Loretta Johnson presiding.

Delores Kaspar served as co-hostess. Sullivan introduced Betty Swihart, who presented the program on Hospice of South Texas.

Hospice is a special concept of care designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families when a life-limiting illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments.

Hospice staff and volunteers offer a specialized knowledge of medical care, emphasizing pain management. Hospice care is completely covered by Medicare and Medicaid.

Swihart distributed Hospice brochures and explained the various services of volunteers. Direct patient services may include companioning, offering “time out” for caregivers, grocery shopping for example; some provide pastoral care, such as reading scripture and prayer. There is bereavement support in the months leading up to and following death of the loved one.

Semi-direct patient services of volunteers include making gifts for patients, helping with mailings, etc. Swihart distributed directions on knitting and crocheting cuddly prayer shawls for patients.

Nine members and several guests attended the First Ladies Coffee and Style Show held recently at the community center.

The next meeting was Dec. 6 in the home of Anne Roddy.

Members repeated the closing ritual and joined hands for the Mizpah.

Este Lauder has extended its travel retail exclusive collection with a new colour set. The Modern Chic Face Palette is rolling out this month at travel retail locations in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.

The set contains four Pure Color eye shadows, a Signature Silky Powder Blush, AeroMatte Ultralucent Pressed Powder, one Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick, a Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil and a Double Wear Zero-Smudge Lengthening Mascara.

Also included is an all-over face brush and two eye applicators. The products are presented in a blue patent leatheresque case adorned with a charm.

In other news, Este Lauder has teamed up with US fashion designer Michael Kors to created two limited-edition Holiday make-up sets. Each contains a selection of Este Lauder Pure Color products, presented in a bag designed by Kors himself, in either gold or silver, depending on the region.
