He was a great teacher who insisted that Kihon be done correctly, that maximum energy be obtained from technique, and that you should exhibit professionalism over personality. He was a great mentor who helped me personally through some extremely difficult times in my life. And he was a great leader - enriching the lives of whoever he touched.

All of these things fall short of what Hanshi Abele was - a great man. Those who knew him looked up to him. He was s shining example of what you can do with your life and he lived his life the same way. The International Symposium will continue to be a dedication to his leadership.

He will be sorely missed by all of us - but will never be forgotten. His dedication to the martial arts and documenting the knowledge of Shuri-Ryu Karatedo was inspiring and he will live on in our memories. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I would like to have people post stories here as an example of how Hanshi Abele had touched your life. If you have some funny stories, those are welcome. We should remember him for his sense of humor and his teachings.
I recently discussed this with Sensei Karl Wagner from Ashville, NC on this issue. He was very helpful in giving the background of the technique. With his permission - I have listed some of his answer here for the rest of you.

I will be listing the Taezu description when I have cleared up a couple of questions with Sensei Wagner.

*********************

There is a number eleven Taezu. This is a remnant of the 'Shorei Days'. Apparently, when O'Sensi Trias formalized all of his karate into Shuri-ryu, it was left out. This is my (our) best guess.

Now, it is unofficially understood that O'Sensei Trias is the 'originator' of the Taezu Naru Wazas, as they do not show up anywhere else. Possibly they were a draw from the 'infamous' Hsing-Yi that we also have 'obscure' lineage to. One can check into the syllabus of Hsing-Yi and not find it there. I met a gentlemen one day at the Autozone store who has been training in Hsing-Yi for 36 years. He too, was without an answer for any connection.

When I was a green belt, I remember learning and working the 1-11 Taezu Naru Waza. Like I said, that was before the appointment of our O'Sensei Trias to stylehead of Shuri-ryu in the early '80's. As time went by, we found ourselves being transformed to Shuri-ryu stylists. Even then, in the '70's we were known as Shorei-Goju-ryu stylists. At any rate, we are now using just one through ten.

In our recent seminar, here in Asheville, with Terry Sanders Hanshi (Kaicho of Shorei-ryu, apppointed by O'Sensei Trias) we covered (briefly) the 11 Taezu(s).
