Today was the final day of the Leeds Through a lens Exhibition & tomorrow I go pick up 3 unsold prints. Am I disappointed, hell no! Of course it would have been great for someone to buy my work, but I have gained something far more important than that… Experience.

Leeds Through a Lens was my first exhibition & I feel like I learnt a lot. The first is that I can hold my head up high & know that my work can hold its own when displayed alongside other photographers.

The gallery allowed me to see my photography in a different light. Establishing what to submit & how my work came together as a collective was invaluable. In the end I still think I made the right decision for my submissions. I would have possibly added a couple more shots including people to the mix. It’s not just architecture that makes the places we live what they are, it’s the people.

Framing was something I took too lightly & that was a mistake. For my next exhibition I’m not even going to attempt to frame my own prints. I’m going to pay the extra, get them professionally done & save myself & the Mrs from the stresses of doing it ourselves.

Experience is invaluable in any profession, I’m not more of an artist for having displayed my work in a gallery. I’m not suddenly inundated with enquiries after having an interview featured on the Exposure Leeds website.

What I am is proud, proud that my work has been seen by people away from the confines of computer screens. Proud to have publicised, created, stood by my art & been there to collect it at the very end. After all, there’s always a space on my wall for another memory or two…

It’s My 600th post on Beyond the Megapixel & almost 2 years since I put this blog together. It’s funny how making pictures and writing about them goes hand in hand with the rest of my life. I was just talking today to someone at work about been happy in the day job. Every morning I get up, I go to work like everyone else. Not working as a photographer but in a call centre. I’m a phone jockey, I’m one of the masses who went to University to study a course with no real prospects. Just a dream & an overdraft with the same old job at the end. But am I unhappy?… No.

See once I get out those doors, break off the office chains & rush off to load up Photoshop… I’m really home.

Of course it’s not just photography & writing about it that has made those dismal days dissipate, it’s having a partner to share them with. In 1 year & 5 months I will be filling my pants waiting for my beautiful bride to walk down the aisle. When I look back through my photography, almost every image I’ve ever taken has been by her side. This makes me remember not only the subject within the frame, but also the memory behind it. Beyond every picture & every lens is a story un-captured that only the artist sees. An unframeable beauty, a story unseen by anyone but it’s creator. To me that is as important to the feeling of an image as it’s visual counterpart.

I’m not gonna lie the Mrs, she has a lot to deal with. When I’m not at work I’m working on images & when I’m not working on images I’m at work. Balancing a social life when chasing a dream isn’t the easiest job. The problem is knowing when to stop, If I have a day off I rarely leave the desk. Editing, building SEO, email marketing, coding, blogging, social networking, (it’s work honest) posting images, building galleries, contacting clients, learning new techniques, framing… The list goes on.

It’s a fight I didn’t know existed, but it’s paying off. Im beginning to build a dream from the ground up & for that I want to doff my metaphorical hat & say…

Hats off to the loved ones that deal with our obsessions…

Hats off to the semi professionals who strive for better days…

But above all, hats off to the dreamers…

There’s a change in the waters, a disturbance in the force at Shutter Go.. Click. In just under 2 weeks I will be featured alongside some of Yorkshires Finest at Leeds gallery as part of the ‘Leeds Through a Lens’ exhibition.

I have 3 pieces on show that have already been featured on these here pages. For some reason it wasn’t a difficult choice when it came to selecting my 3 images. They all mean a lot to me in different ways & work together collectively.

I’ll be posting on the blog about my experiences of being a part of the exhibition at a later date, along with an insight into my choices for display. In the meantime if you’re in the area, please come along. The exhibition runs from the 10th of April to the 16th of May so you have no excuse ;-)
