Thailand’s leading artist family presents 70 contemporary large and small scale bronze sculptures honouring the philosophy that unity and harmony are the means to achieving peace. Accomplished sculptor, Yannapol Vichienket, reveals a humoristic approach to his work, drawing on everyday household items. Inspired by the Changing Seasons
13-24 March, 2008, City Gallery, The Siam City Hotel, Bangkok

Glass artist, Prapat Jiwarangsan, and textile artist, Arisara Dandprapai, present “Wilderness”, an outstanding collective of contemporary textile design, jewelry and glass arts, inspired by the changing seasons, March 13-24, 2008 at the City Gallerya of the Siam City Hotel, Bangkok.

The peacefulness of a woodland trek under a canopy of colourful leaves and branches plays muse to Arisara’s intricate textile designs consisting of large and small textured wall hangings, murals, carpets and soft furnishings. Each canvas is a kaleidoscope of naturally woven yarns, copper, leather and tree bark.

Considered one of Thailand’s accomplished few glass artisans, young and gifted glass designer, Prapat Jiwarangsan, displays a variety of bowls, vases and fused-glass jewelry with styles ranging from functional to the more expressive sculptural forms. Displays include elegant pieces with geometric art-deco motifs; free-form works that blend translucency, light and colour for a dramatic and novel effect; and trendy, “funky” jewelry pieces which combine glass with Arisara’s textiles.

Very few artists in Thailand have ventured into the ancient art of glassblowing and engraving with such conviction. Throughout its history, the production of glass has followed the ebb and flow of empires all over the world. Today, with the discovery of new glass production techniques, there has been a rebirth of glass-art studios and workshops that allow artists such as Prapat the use of small home-studio furnaces. This trend has accelerated the development of glass design both nationally and internationally. But each creation is as individual as the maker. Drawing on the concept of an intangible Dhamma, Prapat’s designs visually manifest themselves in the solid form of sculpted glass. Wilderness exhibition illuminates “Dhamma in nature” - the impermanence of all things.

With a professional, large scale operation that features state-of-the-art technology, PB Valley has successfully pioneered and produced a number of exciting wines which have yet to be explored by Thailand’s thriving tourism. Years of research, testing and development have opened up new frontiers in the viticulture resulting in a “New Latitude Wine” - premium wines made from grapes grown in the exotic tropical latitude of 14.3 degrees north.

No-longer perceived as a homegrown product, PB Valley Wines’ exceptional taste, quality and reputation have won the 2002 PB Khao Yai Reserve Shiraz a silver medal at the AWC Vienna in 2006, receiving an 86.9 rating. Then, in 2007, the 2005 Sawasdee Chenin Blanc received a silver shield at the Adelaide Wine & Beverage Competition in Australia. Making a huge return to the wine circuit is PB Valley’s introduction of Sawasdee Khao Yai Rosé 2006. Inspired by the traditional Thai greeting, this blush-pink hue wine has a delicious character which lends itself to an aperitif or dinner wine, offering a surprising crispness.

The Siam City Hotel and the Dante Alighieri Association present a collection of beautifully detailed prints by Giovanni Fassio. Designer and painter, Giovanni shares his childhood passion for the world of nature in reproduction prints derived from original antique engravings and etchings of the 1600s through the 1800s, currently in private collections.

The artist’s visual illustrations pay homage to the importance of the artisans and engravers of the Late Renaissance, the ‘golden age’ that saw limitless discoveries of new species of plants, animals and forms of life. Working with scientists, the great artisans illustrated and recorded the discoveries. Their works gained widespread circulation and importance through reprints in catalogued studies, encyclopedias, books and dictionaries.

Giovanni’s works are an exploration of the old techniques and newly devised processes in printmaking. Very delicate and decorative, each piece is a creative reproduction, whereby every detail of the original image is painstakingly manipulated and adapted to contemporary tastes. Subjects include botany, insects, animals, architecture, furnishings, flowers, fruits, personages, landscapes and juvenilia. The collection, A2 (cm. 42 x 59) and A3 (cm. 29 x 42) in size, are presented on a natural highly durable acid-free paper that gives them a thickness and gloss.

Located on Si Ayuthaya Road at Phayathai intersection, the Siam City Hotel is just opposite the Skytrain Phayathai Station, take Exit #4 down to the ground level, cross the road and turn right.

Freshness is the name of the game in the highly competitive restaurant world. While new eateries try to catch public's attention by introducing fresh new styles, the older existing ones can't sit still without making over. Venues have been modernised and menus reconstructed in order to be "up-to-date".

Yet, not all women look better after a facelift, right? Same with restaurants. Several time· honoured eateries end up with peculiar new looks that simply make regulars whine for the bygone. Some reopen with just a paint job and different table arrangement and there's a party ~ for that. But there's a number of restaurants that have brilliantly brought in absolute new looks that have impressed both clients and the media. And Lin-Fa, a IS-year-old Chinese restaurant at Siam City Hotel. should definitely be counted among them.

Relaunched with a much brighter and more modern look, the legendary Lin Fa incorporates contemporary minimalist design with the elegance
of Chinese emperor culture. Seamless glass and stylish chrome panels blend beautifully with dark wood furniture and marble pillars. The solidity of stone and metal is softened by silk cushioned walls and graceful floral motifs as well as beautiful Chinese paintings. The 190-seater also features 10 private rooms that can accommodate 10-40 guests.

Whereas the place has gone through a major revamp, the menu was only slightly redressed. Over the years, the restaurant has been cherished
for its scrumptious variety of gourmet dim sum as well as well-executed Cantonese dishes prepared by master chefs. So, while several new dishes have been added, you can be assured that the old favorites remain.

From the comprehensive 2oo-item menu, the best-selling choices are still Pelting duck (900 baht), Hong Kong-style grilled suckling pig aka moo hun 1,400 baht) and deep-fried pigeon (480 baht per bird). If you're a fan, don't miss.

For Thais, dim sum is always a focus point when checking in at a Chinese restaurant for
lunch. We might not really mind a prosaic main course, but if a restaurant's dim sum delicacies aren't up to par, the place can easily be forgotten. As an aficionado of the treats myself, I was delighted to find Lin-Fa's dim sum menu featured as many as 35 steamed and deep-fried dainties (60-80 baht). The selection includes many well-loved
classics as well as the restaurant's own inspirational new creations.

The basic shu mal (steamed pork and prawn dumplings) and 1m gao (steamed prawn dumplings), with plump and fresh content and never mushy exterior, were of top quality and made with care.
Of all 12 items that we ordered, ham sui kok or deep-fried dumplings stuffed with minced pork and vegetables and steamed dumplings stuffed with scallop and spinach, got my highest marks. The first delicacy, looking like a tiny golden rugby-ball, was crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside with a light and grease-free glutinous
shell and very flavorful filling, while the other treat presented translucent dumplings with tasty a vegetable stuffing that yielded a great texture.

Also enjoyable were pan-fried turnip cake with chilli shrimp paste, pan-fried rice flour rolls in soy sauce, steamed crystal dumplings and pink and green goldfish dumplings.

On Saturday and Sunday, the restaurant features dim sum lunch buffet at 490 baht per
person. It includes unlimited order of steamed and deep-fried delicacies plus your choice of noodle dish, soup and dessert.

From the a la carte menu, we sampled five dishes. Two were highly satisfying but the rest weren't too thrilling. Highly recommended are fried white shrimp in egg yolk (480 baht), which featured succulent prawn coated with crunchy, slightly salty egg yolk, and stir-fried beef tenderloin with bitter cucumber in Chinese plum sauce (400 baht), which offered an impressively subtle combination of tastes.

Less appetising, however, was steamed fresh goby fish in soy sauce (150 baht per 100 grammes), of which both fish and sauce lacked captivating flavour, while baked marinated duck leg with morel sauce (300 baht), though finished with pleasure by my male companion, was a bit too eccentric for me.

Lin-Fa's dessert menu offers a dozen varieties of sweets. The recommended deep-fried spring rolls with banana and mango (l20baht per person) was light, refreshing and not too sweet, confirming the restaurant's culinary excellence.

Siam City Hotel boasts a thirteen-year long relationship with the celebrated Whiffs, who perform entirely without instrumental accompaniment and in superb harmony. These charming and very talented young men will share their love of music, wit and comedic antics in one of their legendary fast-paced performances.

Formed by fourteen senior Yale University men who are chosen each year to form the Whiffenpoofs, the group is one of the world’s oldest and most famous American a cappella legends. Founded in 1909, the Whiffs began as a senior quintet that met for weekly concerts. “From the beginning, the emphasis has always been on singing and the fellowship of music-lovers,” said a Whiff member.

The history behind the name reflects the light-heartedness of the group’s philosophy. The name was adopted from a nonsensical verse originally spoken of in a Victor Herbert musical comedy called “Little Nemo,” which had a run on Broadway. A comedian spoke of the exploits of big game hunting and fishing and told a fantastic tale of how he caught a “Whiffenpoof” fish. Unclear of the name’s true meaning, “Whiffenpoof” fitted in with the group’s mood of ‘free and exuberant fancy,’ and is repeatedly adopted with enthusiasm by the new members.

The group’s repertoire draws on a long tradition of original arrangements from many styles and eras, ranging from classical jazz to English folk songs and even Motown hits of the 60’s. New additions and original recordings are a popular feature and this year’s performance includes musical hits made famous by composers Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and Cole Porter. The performance will also feature a host of notable recordings from Bob Marley, Jim Weatherly and the group’s most celebrated namesake, “The Whiffenpoof Song,”written by two of the founding members and later popularized in recordings by Rudy Vallee, Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, and others.

Widely celebrated across the globe, the Whiffenpoofs have performed for a range of spiritual and political leaders, including Mother Theresa, the Dalai Lama and Presidents Reagan, Bush, and Clinton, in venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln centre. Always in the news around America, the Whiffs have featured in the New York Times, NBC Television and CBS affiliate KBTX, and Vanity Fair Magazine.
