Villa Trabia (Trabia Gardens in Palermo)

Not long ago I rediscovered a place that the locals of Palermo often forget about ,Villa Trabia.

It is a beautiful and big ensembles of gardens which can almost be called a park but has nothing to do with the conventional parks we all know and love, Villa Trabia is more than that, it's covered with tall palm trees and all other kinds of trees. In fact thanks to the care of the head gardener Vincent Ostinelli, trees such as locust trees, monkey-puzzle trees, oleanders, conifers, ficus magnolioides and oak can be found in the Villa, with a total in 1910 of 2,790 plant species (now currently around 150 species).

The building called the Casena in the district of Terre Rosse, is one of the many attractions of Villa Trabia, it was built in the eighteenth century by Ignatius Lucchesi Palli, prince of Campofranco and was then bought by Giuseppe Lanza Branciforte, prince of Trabia in 1814. The building is composed of a large central body on two levels, with two side wings and a small courtyard at the center of which lies the entrance.

Also you might like to know that the Villa is divided into two parts, cut in two by a natural gradient (an old "pirrere" quarries of limestone) which now houses a road. The two sections of the Villa are connected by a beautiful bridge built in the Baroque style, there, it's possible to visit some of the greenhouses and a large historic fountain built in the seventeenth century.

But that isn't all, Villa Trabia holds a branch of Palermo's city council, a public library and a very useful free internet point. It is such a magical place, especially in the spring and the summer, that weddings ceremonies can take place there. I do advice to anyone to go and visit it, it's not far from the center in Via Salinas 3 and it's open from Monday to Friday from 9.30 am to 06.00 pm.

Oratorio Santa Cita (Oratory Santa Cita)

I discovered this spectacular chapel thanks to the TV programme "Sicily Unpacked" shown on BBC4 in January. I was completely astonished by the beautiful stucco sculptures all handmade by Giacomo Serpotta.

Born and died in Palermo (1652-1732), Serpotta was a true master in working with stucco.

Stucco was a difficult medium to work with as it was drying very fast not leaving much time for correcting mistakes. One day Serpotta came up with the idea of adding marble dust to the stucco mix giving the final sculpture a more lustrous effect, when I saw the statues for the first time I thought they were made of marble that is how amazing the effect was.

Serpotta's best representation of his work can be found at the Oratorio Santa Cita . That is why on my last visit to Palermo in February I visited this chapel .

Tickets costs 5 euros per person, you can also visit the Oratorio San Domenico a couple of minutes walk away by using the same ticket where you can admire more art-work of Giacomo Serpotta.

Museo Internazionale delle Marionette (International Puppet Museum)

A great and original Museum .

All the puppets are handmade and very old, some of them are over 100 years old!
The collection comes from all over the world like Indonesia, Japan, China etc....

It is a great place to take your kids, especially on Tuesdays and Fridays as at 17.30
a puppet show takes place (October-June) which we missed as we went in the morning!

Tickets cost 5 euros per adult and 3 euros for children. If you are in a group you can try to get a better price like we did! In fact we almost paid half of the original price after a bit of bargaining.

Opening times: Monday- Saturday 9.00-13.00/ 14.30-18.30
Sunday 10.00-13.00

Just a little advice on finding the Museum as is a little tricky to find as we went passed it
without realising.
Once you get to Via Butera take the first left onto vicolo Niscemi, where you will find the Museum on your left.

Casa Professa

One of the most important Baroque churches in Palermo.

If you want to see a true example of the Baroque art i definitely

recommend a visit to this church.

Partly destroyed in the second world war, it reopened in 2009.

Unfortunately is not allowed to take pictures inside, but i sneakily

managed to take some to show off the beautiful architecture

of this church.
Very easy to find it is near two other beautiful monument which are the 4 Canti
and the Piazza Pretoria which you can find a brief description in my most popular
article " Top 10 Palermo sightseeing".

Il Capo Comes Alive

Stepping into the neighborhood just behind the somber bulk of Palermo’s Cathedral feels like entering another country. An Arabic one, to be precise. Il Capo is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, and has managed to retain a distinctly Moorish influence in its streets and market.

Il Capo occupies the northwestern quadrant of Palermo’s historic center demarcated by the Quattro Canti, and reveals its charms like a jack-in-the-box. The first hour we spent walking around, we were unimpressed. The streets were narrow and photogenic, and had strange names like Via Sedie Volanti(“Flying Seats”) and Scippateste (which I can best translate as “Head Snatcher”), but there wasn’t much life.

But then: POP. As soon as we came upon the Piazza del Monte and Via Sant’Agostino, Il Capo burst out of its box. A busy market with vendors hawking everything from espresso makers to swordfish greeted us. Shopping around for the pine nuts and basil needed for pesto, we quickly discovered the neighborhood’s charms. A wedding was taking place in the church, and preparations for a weekend festival were underway. People seemed in unnaturally good moods; a barber and the customer he was shaving waved us in and asked us to take their picture. Random, but sure, why not?

Next to the barber, we found a bakery with white tiles and huge ovens in the back. I don’t know if we’re just having good luck, or perhaps are conditioned to dealing with more guarded Latin Americans, but people here are extraordinarily gracious to tourists. When we timidly asked if we could see the bread being made, the woman in charge immediately said, “Certo!! Entrate!”, and ushered us in.

A couple days later, we returned to Il Capo to check out the festival. The church and adjacent streets were decked out in lights extremely reminiscent of those from Valencia’s incredible Fallas festival. Unsurprising, since the best lights from Fallas are organized by Italian companies.

Morning is the best time to visit Il Capo, when the market is at its most hectic. But regardless of the hour, this strange little neighborhood is worth a look.

Taormina's Art Festival

Taormina Arte 2011, a series of events dedicated to cinema, theater, music, dance, art and opera held at the Ancient Theatre , the Congress Palace and the Palace of the Dukes of S . Stefano.

At center of the rich calendar of events offered by TaoArte, artists and performances of the highest quality of international level.

The 2011 season of Taormina Arte will open on June 11 with the ceremony inaugurating the 57th edition of the Taormina FilmFest . The film festival, directed by Deborah Young, will close on 18 June. The following week, yet the protagonist Cinema with the delivery of the " Silver Ribbon ", the evening is organized by a trade union film journalists, chaired by Laura Delli Colli.

The Theatre section will be directed by Simona Celi. A lot of news in the program for a season that will be entirely concentrated in the month of July. In August will be the turn of the " Music & Dance ", conducted by Enrico Castiglione. At the Ancient Theater, August 5, with the official opening lyric to "Nabucco" after the 7 's "Aida" The closure is scheduled for August 31. Close the long season of Taormina Arte the usual appointment with theSinopoli Festival , in October 2011. The program also includes many events such as exhibitions, book presentations and conferences.

Cannolo Festival in Piana degli Albanesi

Cannoli & Friends 6 to 8 May 201 1 . Sweets and Culture Festival in Piana degli Albanesi (PA).

Ground of strong tourist attraction is the cannoli, sweet pianioto universally known. His culinary secret is stored in the wafer (shkorça) of flour, wine, and salt, which is filled with sieved sweetened ricotta and chocolate chips.
The event will consist of cultural and gastronomic meetings, workshops, conferences and debates that will see the protagonist, of course, the cannoli, tasted in conjunction with the products Sicilian food and wine quality.

For the duration of the event there will be a big point of tasting in which the public can buy the famous cannoli of Piana by buying a ticket for the price of 1.50 €.

Free tasting workshops are planned, during which there will be a discussion on specific products and techniques for preparation of some Sicilian sweet specialties.

The history of the cannoli

The cannoli is now part of the iconography as well as in food history. It has centuries of history, but its origins remain shrouded in legend. It is said that the birth of cannolo took place in Caltanissetta, the old "Kalt El Nissa", "Castle of women", home to numerous harem Saracens.

The emir's favorite, to pass the time, seems to devote to the preparation of delicious dishes and, in particular, of sweets. Another source, however, tells that the cannoli were prepared for the first time in a convent near Caltanissetta.

It is said that during Carnival, the nuns "invented" a cake featuring a wrap ('a scorcia) prepared with flour, eggs, lard and sugar. We try to "marry" the two legends at the end of Arab rule in Sicily, the harem is empty.

One or more women, now free, convertitesi to Christianity, entered the convent. You may have played some of the recipes prepared for Emiri, including that of "cannoli".

Taormina's Film Festival

Music Week in San Vito Lo Capo

"Music Week" in San Vito Lo Capo, the cultural festival organized by the Association. Socio Cultural and band "City of San Vito Lo Capo" under the auspices of the Municipality and the Province of Trapani, which will be held from April 25 to May 1, 2011.

The draft of the "Week of Music" was a view of the promulgation of the musical culture in its various forms, from chamber music band genre, from jazz to polyphonic singing, passing through the archaic forms of folk and popular tradition. A week full of events arranged entirely by the 'Ass and socio-cultural band, in the cultural renewal plan started almost a decade ago and saw the star of Banda Musicale a variety of events, in addition to the canons and now "traditionalized" , reaching its peak with the organization of the first edition of "Music Week" conference in San Vito Lo Capo 21 to 28 May 2005 between San Vito much success but also, very important to note, among the hundreds of tourists that animated the spring.The "Week of Music" appeared, then, as a small event destined to repeat itself and seeks to enrich the already beautiful checkerboard of cultural events that make our area one of San Vito lo Capo-Makari-Castelluzzo, the ideal scenario for the cultural revival of our province and the whole region. My travels: Cefalu'

Located on the north coast of Sicily only 50 KM from Palermo, Cefalu' is a lovely
small town by the sea with lovely narrow cobble streets, plenty of restaurants to
choose from and of course a fantastic beach with crystal clear sea which it has been
voted one of the cleanest sea in Europe!

Cefalu' boasts a superb cathedral (the Duomo) that rise above the huddled roofs
of the old town, dominating the main Piazza, an elegant space shaded by palm trees.

The mosaics in the Duomo are the earliest and the best preserved of all the churches in Sicily!

My wife and I last visited Cefalu' in 2008.
We discovered this lovely B&B called "Cicerone" only 2 minutes walk from the beach.
From its balcony the view was breathtaking with the waves crashing against the building
underneath the balcony ( as you can see from the picture below).

I would like to end this article by reccommending a restaurant called "Lo scoglio Ubriaco"
because you can enjoy fine food mainly fish on a beautiful terrace from were you
can admire a nice seaview .

When to Fly to Sicily

Peak Season:

The high season in Sicily is June to September.
This is is when the weather is at is hottest, and the beaches are busiest.
There are fewer crowds, however, in April, May and October.
The temperatures should still be good and prices for flights to Sicily and
hotels on the island will drop.

For those wishing to climb Mount Etna, travel during the warmer months is necessary.
Even in the height of summer, it can be freezing at the top, so make sure you pack
appropriate clothes.

Off Season:

The off season is November to March when you will see few tourist crowds, but the
weather can be chilly and damp.

Mafiosos’ Retreats, Peacefully Repurposed in Sicily

IT could have been the rural retreat of a hedge-fund magnate or an Italian prince: a two-story villa of beige stucco and stone, perched in isolation on a rise overlooking the Jato Valley in northern Sicily.

The front doors opened onto a refurbished dining room with high ceilings, terra-cotta tile floors and a row of stone arches that suggested a Roman amphitheater. Antique brass lanterns, pottery and other curios hung from the walls. Soft light filtered through the windows.

It was getting toward lunch, and in the spacious kitchen, three chefs were preparing dessert: miniature pastries made with honey and chestnuts cultivated in nearby orchards. A narrow staircase wound upstairs to the villa’s three rustic bedrooms, with 10 beds, each of which looked out upon pale-green meadows sloping upward toward bald-faced granite mountains.

In fact, this 17th-century farmhouse once belonged to Bernardo Brusca, the capo of one of Sicily’s most brutal crime families.

to help them, by staying in B&Bs, eating in restaurants and shopping in delis that refuse to pay protection money. Stephanie Rafanelli reports

It was Sunday lunchtime in Palermo's Piazza San Francesco and the air was thick with
charcoal smoke and chatter.
A vendor poked an octopus as it roasted on the open grill, releasing
a whiff of warm olive oil and lemon that mingled with the city's

characteristic scent of brine and dust.

A girl carried a tray of sweet cannoli high above her head, navigating stalls of sardine rolls
and anchovies frizzling in floury pans.
The crowd went about its usual business - church bells chimed and a christening party
spilt out of Basilica San Francesco D'Assisi, bobbing the newly baptized bundle as they strolled.

But this was no ordinary Sunday market. It was the "Free Sicily" organic food fair, part of a
growing and increasingly visible movement run by young Palermitans rebelling against
the mafia, or Cosa Nostra, and the stranglehold organised crime has on the Sicilian people.

"Whatever you do, DON'T mention the M-A-F-I-A," my northern Italian uncle warned
me before my last visit to Sicily - a dusty road trip in a clapped-out Cinquecento in 1993
just after the arrest of the boss of bosses Salvatore Totò Riina.

Top 10 Palermo Sightseeing

In my opinion this are the top 10 sightseeing that you should consider if you go to Palermo

1) La Cattedrale

Located in Corso Vittorio Emanuele the cathedral is a great building with a mixture of different architectural styles

(Gothic, Norman, Baroque). I

used to live 5 minutes away from this beautiful building which i walked

passed almost every day and never got tired of looking at it.

Free admission. Mon-Sat 7-7; Sun 8-1:30, 4-7.

2) The 4 Canti and Piazza Pretoria

The 4 Canti each one of them adorned with fountains are considered the heart of Palermo, located at the intersection of Via Maqueda and Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Built in 1611 when Palermo was divided in four sections respectively Capo, Kalsa, Castellammare and Albergheria. A few meters away from the 4 Canti you will come across Piazza Pretoria (fountain of shame). It has been recently restored, this beautiful monument is a mixture of mythological monsters and nude statues.

3) La Martorana and San Cataldo churches

This beautiful churches are located in Piazza Bellini next to each other. The Martorana interiors are decorated with some of the best mosaics I have ever seen. A must see.Free admission Mon-Sat 8-1, 3:30-7.

The San Cataldo the one with the three domes as you can see from the picture where you can admire the beautifull mosaic pavement, a sure sign of the arab craftsmen who worked for the christian in power few centuries ago.Small donation to enter. Mon-fri 9:30-1, 3:30-6,

4) Palazzo dei Normanni

Standing on the highest point of the old city the Palace was the seat of the Kings of Sicily. In 1947 the palace became the seat of the

sicilian Parliament. Originally the phoenicians built a fort here, which was rebuilt by the romans and arabs. Don't miss the Palatina chapel! Mon-sat closes between 1 and 2 Sun 8:30-12:30

5) Cappella Palatina

    This lovely chapel is located inside the Palazzo dei Normanni. It was built by King Ruggero as
    his private chapel. The interiors are decorated with astonishing mosaic. I would definately reccomend
    a visit. Tickets costs around 10 euro wich include a tour of the Palazzo.

6) Teatro Massimo

    The third biggest theatre in Europe is situated right in the city centre. This neoclassic building is
     a masterpiece of Ernesto Basile who completed the work started by his father. A guided tour costs
    around 5 euro.

7) Orto Botanico

An elegant, pleasent and relaxing italian garden with beautiful statues, fountains and a big variety of palm trees, orange trees, giant cactus etc.
Opening hours are 9am to 7pm, tickets are approximately 5 euro.

8) Monreale Cathedral

   Monreale is a little town situated 5 miles southwest of Palermo. The Cathedral of Monreale contains the world's largest mosaic surface. To the right of the cathedral is located the cloister with its 228 twin columns decorated with mosaic.
    Visit the treasury before climbing the 181 steps to the terrace with a fantastic view of Palermo.Free admission but a small price apply for the
Treasury and Terrace. Open daily 8-6.

9) Catacombe dei Cappuccini

    One of the best catacombs to see. 8.000 bodies dating from the 16th to the 20th century in various stages of preservation. Some still have hair, eye lashes. An old tradition of the cappuccini monks.

Free admission but you have to give a small donation.
Open daily, closed between noon and 3pm.

10) Mondello
Mondello and its beautiful beach is only a 15 min drive from Palermo.I would definately reccommend a visit in the week as usually at the week-ends hundreds of Palermitans will visit. I also reccomend to buy an ice cream from Renato Bar then sit in the Piazza by the fountain and enjoy the view and your ice cream of course!

Activities in Sicily

In Sicily normal school time usually is from 8.00 to 1.00 , this leaves a big slot of time for young people that can be dedicated to extra curriculum activities, such as playing a musical instrument, swimming, dancing ect...

Sicily is also quite famous for extreme sports as its mountainous landscapes offer the ideal place for Trekking, Hiking, Mountain Biking, Horse Riding and Running , while the many sandy beaches makes it a perfect place to go scuba diving, sailing, surfing and any other water sports.

If you are a fan of windsurfing from the 15th to the 23rd of May 2010 in Mondello (Palermo's beach), will
take place the 25th edition of World Festival on the beach . This year's event will include the 2010 Sicily
Grand Prix.

For the best scooba diving experience i definately reccommend a trip to Ustica.
Ustica is a small island 55 km north of Palermo where regular ferry or speed boats
can take you to the island .
Many divers are attracted by the deep dives of this beautiful volcanic island.

Sicilian cuisine

In my opinion Sicilian Cuisine is a masterpiece of Italy.

The many recipes are simple and its ingredients very flavourful thanks to the climate.

Olive oil is largely used for cooking and dressing, butter is rarely used.
Fish is very popular especially served fresh with oil and garlic or olives, tomatoes and
capers.

Sea salt is also used a lot and various dishes are enriched with herbs that grow locally in
abundance such as basil, parsley, mint, sage, rosemary etc.

At lunchtime pasta is the most popular dish.
If you travel around the Trapani province cous cous is very popular especially with fish.

Bread is largely used with almost any dish.
Different types of cheese are produced on the island like ricotta and caciocavallo which are personally two of my
favourites.

Sicily is also a proud producer of wine, boasting 28 vineyards and 21 DOC wines.
A red wine I definately reccomend is Nero D' Avola and a nice White is Corvo Glicine.

Sicilian puddings are often fruit based and quite rich, a pudding that I think anyone
who visits sicily must try is the cannolo siciliano and of course the delicious ice cream.

Flight to Sicily

The only flight to Sicily available trough Ryanair from london Stansted airport is
to Trapani as the route to Palermo will be discontinued by the end of March 2010.

I have tried investigate the matter over the Web and i learnt of a dispute between
Ryanair and the Italian Authorities regarding some type of ID (fishing license) used on
domestic flights.

As i could not find any other news regarding the Stansted/Palermo route, i decided to call
Ryanair. Unfortunately the operator didn't know or wasn't allowed to tell me why
Ryanair will stop flying to Palermo but he confirmed that from 30th March 2010 Trapani
will be the only route to Sicily.

Trapani is situated on the west coast of Sicily and has traditionally made its money from
tuna, salt and carved corall (canned tuna was invented there). Today the salt is the only
industry remaining, although its port is still busy with ferries connecting to the Egadu islands
and Tunisia.

The distance between Trapani and Palermo is about 110 Km.
The easyest and cheapest way toget to Palermo city centre from Trapani is with a coach
company called Terravision.

A single ticket costs around 12 Euros and the total journey is approximately 3hrs . But if you
hire a car it will only take you about 1h 22 min!

Sicily Climate

Sicily has got one of the best climates on earth in my opinion.
Winter can be mild by the coast where in the daytime low
temperatures float between 13 and 15 Celsius.

If you travel inland it can be quite cold and stormy
due to the presence of mountains as they can reach up to
3000 feet. You can actually go skiing on Mount Etna.

On the other hand July and August can be very hot
with temperatures reaching on average 40 to 42 celsius especially if the dusty
Scirocco wind is blowing from the african Sahara desert.

From my personal experience the best time to visit Sicily is either
in May or late September as temperatures average around 27 to 31 Celsius.
You will still get plenty of sunny days and it will be a cheaper holiday because
it is out of season and the beaches are generally not as crowded as the majority of
sicilians tend to go on holiday in July and August.
