Remembering Allan Holdsworth taking flight...

“I sound like a bad Mel fookin’ Torme” Allan Holdsworth once said to me when the subject of his singing came up during a conversation we had back in June 1974.

As a somewhat unsteady novice bass guitarist I was attending a Musicians Union workshop in Newcastle with Soft Machine. Two days, plus an evening concert, spent in the company of Ratledge, Jenkins, Babbington, Marshall and newcomer, Allan Holdsworth.

Awed by the proximity of my musical heroes the workshop consisted of me trying to keep my jaw from permanently scraping the floor as well as attempting to get my uncooperative fingers somewhere near the fretboard.

The Softs were all down-to-earth blokes, happy to chat and offer individual advice regarding instrumental technique and approach and none more so than Holdsworth.

Very much the star of the show, hearing his guitar in a band that was almost famous in jazz-rock circles for not having the instrument in the band for so long was a surprise.

The notes flew from his guitar like a flock of startled birds taking flight, frantically circling and swooping through the air. It was dizzying stuff.

At that point in my life I’d seen Paul Kossoff, Ritchie Blackmore, John McLaughlin, Leslie West, Chris Spedding, Robert Fripp, Jimmy Page, Steve Hillage, Dave Gilmour and many other notables in concert.

However, nobody but nobody made the electric guitar sound like that.

It was bold, utterly fearless, feverishly exciting and, I’ll admit, utterly baffling to my teenage ears.

During the workshop and in a conversation whose undeclared starting point had been ‘which fucking planet are you from?’ Allan told me about his previous work, including his vocals on ‘Igginbottom’s Wrench, smiling in mock pain as he compared himself to the singer sometimes known as The Velvet Fog.

After that weekend it was a giddy rush of discovery, backtracking, digging sideways; a kind of scrabbling around to keep up with his output whether it was via Ian Carr’s Belladonna, Tempest, Tony Williams, Gong, UK, Bruford or beyond into his solo work.

He often burned brightest in the company of others where his obsessional perfection could be harnessed or focussed in a way that showed his unconventional brilliance to its best effect.

If Holdsworth could sometimes be frustrating with his habit of abruptly taking flight himself as he moved on to the next gig that caught his eye, his inspired approach broke free of the usual gravitational norms of the instrument to such a degree that most of his collaborators, though sometimes angry and disappointed at the time, nevertheless came to regard it as a privilege to have been able to witness his starry inventions first hand.

The last time I saw Allan in concert was in In New York at the Iridium Club in 2014 alongside Gary Husband and Jimmy Haslip. Just like in 1974, his playing remained bold, fearless, feverishly exciting and, I’ll admit, still utterly baffling to my now post-middle-aged ears.

There he was and there were his notes and the unique music they combined to make, still taking flight, rising up and off into the wild and taking us with him.
