When you are shopping for your family's food, it is important to
consider how the food items you put in your shopping cart can affect
your children's nutrition. It is also good to think about how these food
stuffs will impact their attitude toward healthy foods. So try to
examine your grocery cart before going to the counter. Is it filled with
vegetables, fruits, and other nutritious food? Or is it jam-packed with
processed food and drinks that give less or have no nutritional value
at all?
If you are planning to have a healthy diet for your
family, better start by examining the items in your shopping list and
changing the types of food you will be buying. Here's how you'll be able
to do it:
1. Prepare a Grocery List
Aside from your
grocery budget, this is the most important thing you shouldn't forget to
bring when going out for food shopping. The list can keep you on track,
particularly if it's based on the weekly meal plan you've made.
Remember: your goal is to give your family a balanced diet, so you must
focus your meal plans and menus on wholesome ingredients. These include
lean meat and poultry, fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, low-fat dairy
products, whole grains and cereals, fresh fish, and healthy snacks for
your kids.
2. Go Through a Healthy Path in the Grocery Store
While
in the grocery store, go first to the outer aisles because those are
the places where healthiest foods such as fish, dairy products, and
fresh meat are situated. After getting everything you need, proceed to
the inner aisles, where cereals, fruits and vegetables, as well as
baking supplies can be found. However, these aisles are also where less
healthy foods are placed so it is advisable not to go to these areas
first.
3. Visit farmers' markets and food co-ops
If
possible, shop for your food at the local farmers' markets because you
can find there freshly-picked fruits and vegetables. Other great sources
of healthy foods are food co-ops that buy and sell pesticide-free and
organic produce.
4. Know the Food that are In Season
Before
shopping, find out first the fruits and vegetables that are in season.
This way, you not only get low-priced produce but also a good bargain in
taste. However, no matter how low the price is, do not purchase more
than you can consume. One way to familiarize your kids about seasonal
farm produce is to personally take them to a farm and teach them to pick
the products themselves.
5. Be Careful in Choosing Fruits and Vegetables
If
you did not pick them off yourself, better be careful in choosing the
ones to buy. The good thing about fruits and veggies is that they give
hints of their freshness or ripeness. For vegetables, select the ones
that are colorful and fresh-looking as well as those that are crisp and
firm. Stay away from the veggies that are already limp or with any signs
of decay. When it comes to selecting fruits, keep in mind that a nice
exterior doesn't always mean good quality. However, you still have to
avoid purchasing bruised pieces.

One should never underestimate the importance of eating healthy
food. There are so many benefits but why are there so many people still
not eating right? Why has obesity and heart diseases become such a huge
factor? Although the statistics are clear, people still refuse to change
their life styles.
Eating healthy food may become a struggle,
especially when there are so many fast food restaurants everywhere we
turn. Often people make excuses like they don't have time to get healthy
food, it's not that accessible, or that they don't know how to prepare
it. However, there are just as many supermarkets that stock fresh
produce as there are fast foods outlets, so accessibility is a poor
excuse.
The rate at which obesity in children is rising is more
shocking than that in adults. But what is the root of this problem. One
cannot really blame the children as they learn from their parents.
Children are more likely to eat unhealthy foods if their parents do.
The
benefits of eating a healthy diet include living a longer life, feeling
happier, gaining vitality, weight loss, and a healthy appearance.
Processed food decrease the quality of our lives, so eating healthy
foods means we can better fight diseases and live longer. When it comes
to happiness, studies have shown that eating healthy foods is an
excellent natural anti-depressant.
When you eat healthy your
energy levels tend to rise. Because fatty foods cause weight gain you
will also have a better chance of losing weight with a healthy diet. You
will not only feel healthier but will look healthier. You'll be
surprised at how much healthier your skin, hair, and nails will become.
Sometimes
it is not enough just to eat an apple a day. To really gain the
benefits of eating healthy foods you need to plan an entire healthy diet
and stick to it.
The best time to eat healthy is the morning.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so keeping at least
your breakfast healthy is a good start. Drinking a smoothie in morning
is a good healthy option. It is packed with goodness and tastes
delicious. Yogurt also makes for a healthy breakfast but stick to low
fat, unsweetened yoghurt. Eating plain yogurt with freshly cut fruit
pieces may be an even healthier option. Eggs and whole wheat bread or
bran muffins is more filling. Eating cereals or oatmeal is also better
than eating a fatty breakfast or even no breakfast.
During the day
you need to eat meals that contain loads of starch because they contain
energy. Breads, cereals, rice, potatoes and pasta will do the trick
however, stay within the limits. Do not over eat; just eat enough to
sustain your energy.
You should also try to eat as much fruits and
vegetables as possible throughout the day. One should at least pack in 5
portions. Avoid eating a lot of meats; rather choose fish as a healthy
alternative. Stay away from a lot of fatty and processed foods but do
not cut it out completely. Lastly, drink loads of water.

How can a person stretch their food budget without buying cheap,
empty calories in processed foods? We all think that fresh lean meats,
fish, and fruits and vegetables are the healthiest choices but are not
always affordable, right? Wrong! It is a myth that the healthiest foods
are the most expensive. With a list and a plan, it is possible to eat
healthy without blowing your food budget or sacrificing those
hard-earned results.
Healthy Foods #1: Soy
Want the best
nutrition for about $3 a day? Invest your money in a meal replacement
shake that is soy-based. This is the health communities best kept
secret. Not only does it fill you up for hours, but it contains proper
nutrition to get your body back to the way it was when you felt proud of
it. You can find it in many different flavors and basically, you just
add milk and fresh fruit to it. This is what fast food should really be
like.
Healthy Foods #2: Beans
Beans are versatile and
nutritious, with a variety of flavors and colors to choose from. Beans
are one of the best sources of dietary fiber, which can help lower
cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar. Beans are also high in
protein and low in calories. Since beans can be incorporated into almost
any recipe or eaten alone, you will have tons of cheap, healthy meal
possibilities.
Healthy Foods #3: Eggs
At about $1 to $2 a
dozen, and only 75 calories each, eggs are a healthy bargain. Forget
about the worry of cholesterol because egg consumption contributes less
than 1 percent to the risk of heart disease when other factors are
considered. Eggs have a high proportion of nutrients to calories, which
means that they help you stay full and energized while helping you
maintain a healthy weight. Enjoy them for breakfast, lunch, or dinner in
bakes and omelets, or hard cooked in salads.
Healthy Foods #4: Pasta
Pasta
is tasty, filling, and always an economical way to feed one person or a
crowd. It is low in sodium and fat and high in complex carbohydrates,
which helps you maintain a consistent energy level. Pasta is also
fortified with folic acid, an essential nutrient. Since pasta is easy to
combine with other foods, including vegetables, meats, and sauces
(no...not Alfredo!, you can literally eat it every day and feel as tough
you are always having a new dish.
Healthy Foods #5: Sweet Potatoes
Sweet
Potatoes and yams are also versatile foods that are nutritious and
economical. They are low in sodium, calories and filling, easy to cook,
and loaded with vitamins A and C, iron, and thiamine. They also contain
beta-carotene and are a good source of fiber. They can be baked,
microwaved, or cooked in boiling water. Start by using them in place of
white potatoes.
Healthy Foods #6: Brown Rice
One bag of
brown rice can provide as many as 20 servings. Talk about stretching
your dollar! The great thing about brown rice is that it can be combined
with an assortment of other ingredients so you can get different
tastes. Since it is a great source of fiber, vitamin B, iron, manganese,
and selenium, it boosts your immune system, lowers cholesterol, and
reduces the risks of heart disease and diabetes.
Healthy Foods #7: Frozen Fruits And Vegetables
While
fresh, raw fruits and vegetables that are in season should always be a
first choice, having a supply of frozen vegetables in the freezer is an
inexpensive, nutritious, and versatile backup plan. They retain almost
all of their nutritional value, since they're picked and frozen while at
their peak nutrition and flavor. It is easy to reach for a bag of
frozen vegetables and add them to any meal. Toss them in soy shakes,
soups, stews, lasagna, or stir-fries.
Let us not forget to really
think about what we spend our money on at the grocery store. If you
think salmon, shrimp and steak are too expensive, put back the package
of oreo cookies and the half gallon of ice cream and add up your total
again. Sometimes we overlook the fact that small devilishly good
processed snacks add up in a big way...on your grocery bill as well as
your hips! Focus on eating the healthy foods listed above and you will
be well on your way to saving money and keeping yourself healthy.

As you know - I have been on a health kick...so today I've got
some tips for making healthy food chioces to help you on your road to a
better life!
You'll be pleased to discover that a hectic life
doesn't mean that every meal has to be fast food on the run! Sometimes
it's difficult to make healthy changes, but with a little planning and
know-how, it can be done.
You already know how important it is to
make healthy food choices for you and your family. But how can you fit
the best choices into your busy life?
Here are some strategies to help you and your family make healthy choices:
1. Make dinner time a social experience.
Dinner should be about enjoying your company and taking pleasure in the foods you're eating.
Dinner
becomes a great experience when you're able to enjoy healthy foods
together. Take time to eat as a family and enjoy a real conversation
with each other. Talking will naturally slow down your eating pace,
while also reconnecting you with your family members.
When you
begin to look at mealtime as a social experience, it becomes easier to
make the right choices about healthy foods. Suddenly you aren't so
worried about rushing through and making it quick.
2. Avoid temptation.
It's
so easy to walk into the store with good intent, but walk out with bags
full of unhealthy foods. Unfortunately, our wills are weak, especially
if we've trained ourselves over the years to buy junk foods.
*
Think of healthier alternatives to your family's favorite unhealthy
foods. Rather than high calorie chips, try trail mixes or rice cakes.
Low calorie puddings or frozen yogurts are better alternatives to higher
fat ice creams.
* Never shop when you're hungry. This way you won't pick out unhealthy choices because they look good at the moment.
* Get rid of the unhealthy foods in your home. If they aren't around, you won't be tempted to eat them.
3. Eat fast and healthy meals at home.
When
you're tired at the end of the day and you realize you still have to
feed the family, it's easy to go to a fast food chain and throw fast
food on the table. It may save some time, but it won't save your health -
or your pocket book!
* Look online for quick and easy recipes
made with all natural ingredients. Many recipes can be made in 30
minutes or less and only have 5 ingredients. Taking the time to do some
recipe research will save your sanity in the long run. Then once you
find a "hit" with the family, store the recipe in a book or on your
computer.
* The great thing is that there are many easy, fast, and
healthy foods you can make at home. This takes some planning, but
you'll be more satisfied, save money, and be healthier as well.
*
When you cook, make large batches and freeze the leftovers. This way,
you'll already have meals in the freezer that you can just thaw, heat,
and serve. No mess, no fuss! This is the opportune way to enjoy "fast"
food at home.
4. Eat Slower.
Since the brain takes about 20
minutes to get the signal that the stomach is full, if you eat too fast
you'll pack in a lot more food than you need. When you're still thinking
you're hungry, it's easy to make the wrong choices about food. If you
slow down while you're eating, you'll eat less and you'll still feel
full.
* Set a calming mood before sitting down for a meal. Avoid
having the television on or eating as you're rushing the kids out the
door to another activity. Sitting calmly at the table will allow
everyone to relax and enjoy their meal.
Using these techniques
will bring all kinds of healthy benefits to your family and teach your
children a healthy lifestyle. Healthy food choices are a possibility in
your busy life if you take the time to plan ahead and make dinner time a
priority in your home.

Often, developing healthy food habit is not as restrictive or as
confusing as several individuals imagine. The first and foremost
principle of healthy nutrition is simply eating a wide range of
foodstuff. This is more important, since varied foodstuff make varied
dietary contributions.
Secondly, vegetables, fruits, legumes and
grains are necessary, since these foods are high in carbohydrates,
fiber, minerals, vitamins, and low in fatty substances and are
cholesterol free.
It is also better to balance between calorie
expenditure and calorie intake. That is, avoid eating more foodstuff
than what the body can consume. Otherwise, there is a possibility of
gaining additional weight. Therefore, the more the active an individual
is, the more he can eat and uphold this balance.
It does not mean
that aforementioned three fundamental steps suggest an individual to
sacrifice the favorite food. As long as, an individual's diet is rich in
fiber and nutrients and well balanced, there is nothing improper.
Individuals
also can view healthy foodstuff as a chance to expand range of
alternatives by trying some healthy food such as vegetables, fruits or
whole grains. A healthy nutrition does not have to imply eating
foodstuffs, which are unappealing or bland.
Benefits of Healthy Food:
Nutritious
and healthy diet is very much significant for maintaining a healthy
body. Healthy diet involves timely and regular food, snacks, nuts and
juices. A balanced meal and appropriate food habits are essential for
leading a healthy life. In due course of life, everyone forgets to take
essential nutrition for proper body function, hence fall under several
life-style diseases. Hence, it is necessary for an individual to
understand and know about the benefits of healthy food such as
vegetables, fruits and nuts.
Below discussed are some of the benefits of healthy food:
o
Beetroot: It has good amount of potassium, manganese and foliate. It
also contains fewer calories and helps to cure skin problems.
o
Cauliflower: It is extremely nutritious and is much effective in curing
several ailments. It is rich in folate and apt for pregnant women.
o Mangoes: They are very popular and largely available fruit. They are rich in potassium and good for healing wounds.
o Nutritional Values of Banana: It aids in the healing of anemia, depression, brainpower, blood pressure and constipation.
o Egg: It is nutritious and healthy food. Eggs lecithin prevents the absorption of egg's cholesterol and other sources as well.
Overview:
Research
has witnessed that, those who eat less processed food and saturated
fatty items live longer and healthy life, and are very less prone to
disease and illness. Good health food along with proper exercise gives
tons of energy and makes feel stronger and healthier.
Good health
food can assist individuals in maintaining a healthy weight. The phrase
Healthy Weight is not only important for those individuals who are
overweight, but also for individuals who are underweight as well. With
eating healthy food, individuals can control their body weight without
being underweight or overweight.
Healthy livelihood is all about
understanding the body requirements and rendering it with good supplies
for proper body function. Unhealthy eating habit can affect the
individuals' body severely, hence intake healthy foodstuff to avoid such
consequences.

Just like for humans, there are certain foods and diets that
won't go good for your dog. There are several different variations of
diets that can be put together, but a raw food diet is some of the best
healthy food for dogs. As strange as it may sound, the more raw food
you can give your dog the better the pet's health will be.
Some
people who are not completely sold on the entire raw food diet for their
pet's health will opt to go for a half raw food and half dry food diet,
which is good as well. Just as long as you include some amount of raw
food it will be extremely beneficial for a number of reasons.
Raw
food diets have been found to help the body of your dog deal with common
ailments such as flea infestations, allergies, immune disorders,
continual shedding and much more. The kind of diet that you present to
your dog and the healthy foods that you give to your dog will create a
long-lived life. By providing healthy food, it will help your dog build
immunity, heal quicker from illness and overall just become a healthy
canine.
The worry that people have regarding raw foods, especially
raw meat, is e. coli and salmonella. What most people don't know is
that the way dog's digestive systems are designed they are made to
accommodate raw meat unlike humans.
There is an array of different
kinds of healthy food for dogs that are raw, which most dogs like
because of the variety. As mentioned above, raw meat is the best kind
of food to build up a healthy canine. Things like raw chicken and
turkey necks are great, as well as raw poultry bones. Raw poultry bones
are very beneficial because they are healthy and it is a great way to
clean your dog's teeth. The best kind of raw meat is naturally raised,
hormone and antibiotic free or organic meat.
Whenever you change
your dog's diet, especially when you begin feeding healthy food for
dogs, you want to start small. Having a different diet will take time
for the dog's digestive system to adjust and you may notice either
diarrhea or constipation at first. Over time, you will be able to
gradually build up until you are feeding your dog only raw foods. If
you dog can handle it, a combination of raw foods and hard foods is ok.
While
there are a number of different healthy foods for dogs, putting them on
a raw food diet can be extremely beneficial. Just remember to
gradually introduce the food to their digestive system because it will
be hard at first. The end result though will be a healthy canine with a
stronger immune system.

Most of us do like to eat well. Even though we may not always
pick the best of foods, we do see and hear about healthy foods from many
different sources. Sometimes, however, the information can be
confusing, and if we don't have a good education in what to look for in
choosing healthy foods, we can often become misled.
Since the
trend is going towards healthy eating, many companies have created a
twist in their product lines to include foods that are so called
healthier. However, many of their products are just glorified junk
foods. They still contain white sugar, corn syrup, white flour,
preservatives, milk and whey proteins, and are overly refined so you
still don't get the foods that promote good health. Instead of getting
high nutrition, you may end up with just more high calories - something
you don't want or need.
Education is key here, however, one thing
to first consider is where you shop. Shop where healthy foods are sold,
and where you won't be tempted to purchase unhealthy foods. Also,
don't shop with coupons. You will rarely find coupons promoting healthy
foods. Most generally, the foods that are cheaply made, engineered to
taste good, and are heavily advertised that are on the coupons. So
consider the following information so you can make great healthy food
choices.
o Foods in their natural state are obviously more
nutritious because they have the natural fiber, vitamins, minerals, and
proteins, untouched. Plus they don't have the added sweeteners,
enhancers, colors, additives, fats, etc. added. We need to remember why
we eat! We eat for the nourishment of our bodies, and if the foods do
not provide good nourishment, then they most likely are causing adverse
affects on the body - congesting, polluting, and creating health
problems and disease. We need foods that are high in vitamins and
minerals to feed our cells; fiber for cleansing; proteins for building
and repair; natural carbohydrates to give us energy; and good sources of
fats to help our brain and organs function properly. Foods should
accomplish two things: nourishment and cleansing, and even though water
is our best cleanser, foods cleanse too. If foods do not nourish and
cleanse, in reality they are not real foods - just fillers and fluff!
So that answers why many people are actually over weight!
o White
flour is a common ingredient in many of our foods today. However, white
flour is void of the fiber, oil, and the vitamins and minerals that
naturally occur in the whole wheat kernel. If white flour can be used
as a glue, then what might it be doing to our intestines (creating all
kinds of digestive and bowel disorders)? Even though many are now
choosing whole grain breads, better than that is the whole grains
themselves. Whole grains in all their varieties (brown rice, barley,
oats, millet, quinoa, kamut, wheat, spelt, amaranth, etc.) are great for
breakfast cereals, added to whole-meal salads for lunch, main dishes
for dinner, and even desserts. We need more fiber and roughage and the
whole grains are perfectly designed to give exactly what our bodies
need. Just sprout them, or cook them up a few at a time, and keep them
refrigerated to use on a moment's notice in a variety of ways.
o
Sweeteners are a real consideration today. Our biggest problems with
health and weight is the addiction of sugar, and that's exactly why it
is purposely put into most processed foods - to create an addiction to
it. Sugar can actually be considered a drug because it is void of all
vitamins and minerals, and thus can only cause a chemical reaction in
the body. It can not nourish or create positive benefits to the body in
any way. Better than eating candies, pastries, and desserts, is
choosing to eat good sources of raw natural fruits themselves. Often
times that's what our body is really hungering for. When we do choose
to eat something sweet other than fruits, choose sweeteners such as raw
honey, raw dates, stevia, brown rice syrup, other natural sweeteners,
and fructose on occasion. These sweeteners provide vitamins and
minerals and work with the body, not against.
o Our meat market
today is producing unhealthy animals not fit for human consumption.
Main stream market animals are fed hormones to help them grow faster and
produce more quickly, antibiotics to keep them producing without
infections in their crowded circumstances, and even their own
bi-products even though cattle and poultry are herbivores by nature. If
that is not enough, their slaughter houses have soaking solutions for
water retention, which also contains the fecal matter, dirt, blood, etc.
that is all absorbed into the meat. The fat and connective tissues in
the meat make it the hardest food to digest - which does heat the body
and can be used to our advantage at times. However, we have been
blessed with wonderful legumes - beans in all their varieties: black
beans, pinto beans, soy beans, red beans, navy beans, kidney beans,
garbanzo beans, lentils, and much more. Just keep in mind that most of
the world relies on legumes as their main staples, so these shouldn't
seem uncommon to us. They are full of protein, fiber, vitamins,
minerals, as well as a good balance of carbs. And they have very little
fat (especially compared to meat with the same amount of protein), and
no connective tissue so they digest easier. We would greatly benefit
from eating a variety of legumes on a daily basis and cutting out
unhealthy meats.
o Many of us have been raised drinking milk.
Again, our milk market is like the meat market and the milk products
from such unhealthy animals are not fit for human consumption. Think
about it! Would you take supplements of hormones and antibiotics on a
daily basis? Well you are getting a good dose of them if you consume
main stream market milk products. It is often brought out that our
children reach puberty earlier, our feet are growing longer, our height
is increasing, and the average weight is increasing, partly due to the
hormones we consume through our meats and milk products. If that is not
enough, please note that much of the milk produced is Grade B - which
allows up to 5% blood and pus from infected cow utters. No, they won't
allow that to be sold for drinking milk, but they do use it for making
cheese and other milk products. Milk is not the best source of calcium
as we have been brain washed to think. Because of the pasteurization
process, the calcium in the milk is indigestible. Our best sources of
calcium come from leafy greens, raw nuts and seeds, whole grains and
beans. What we really need to be drinking is water - good pure water.
It is our best natural cleanser and we really don't need any other
drink. Water has that good clean flavor of its own that says it's pure
and exactly what our bodies need. Nothing can compare to the importance
of water!
o Raw fruits and vegetables are one of our most
important foods. They are water- rich for great cleansing, they provide
many essential vitamins and minerals and the perfect amount of fiber.
Plus, they give us natural digestive enzymes to not only help aid
digestion, but for cellular respiration and reproduction. When we don't
get these natural enzymes, our cells do not reproduce properly. For
best digestion, fruits are best eaten first thing in the morning and for
mid-morning or mid-afternoon snacks. They do not digest well with
other foods and don't make great desserts. Vegetables are great for any
meal and prepared in a variety of ways. Though raw is always better,
if we do not chew sufficiently and properly, then we may actually be
assimilating more nutrients from cooked vegetables that have been
somewhat broken down in the cooking process. Organically grown produce
is not always that much higher in nutrients if it is picked too early or
too mature when eaten, however, remember that they are grown without
the chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals
which is an advantage.
If you are hooked on fast foods and
convenience foods, this kind of a diet might seem somewhat of a change.
However, the change is simpler than you may think. Just focus on good
wholesome nourishing and cleansing foods, and omit those which don't.
Read labels, learn the art of preparing healthy recipes, and enjoy a
whole new world of great foods. Then you will have increased energy with
a clean, more functional system!

Healthy eating is important.
So, how can it be that some people
- eat healthfully but don't feel truly healthy?
- are fanatical about health and healthy eating and they're still not healthy?
- no matter what they do, just cannot get healthy?
Do they have "bad genes?" Are they destined to be unhealthy? Or is there some other explanation?
Do you see yourself or someone you know in this scenario?
Let's look at what it means to be healthy.
When you're healthy, you
- feel good
- have a lot of energy
- have a zest for life
- have a positive mindset
- experience vitality in body, mind and spirit
An optimal state of health occurs when your
- body chemistry is in balance
- cells are nourished down to the deepest cellular level
- body is absorbing all the nutrients it needs
- body is working like a fine tuned machine
So,
how is it that some people work really hard at being healthy and are
doing everything right yet still are not able to achieve excellent
health?
The truth is that optimal wellbeing sometimes takes more
than a healthy diet, regular exercise and a positive mindset. You are
unique. There's no one else on the face of the earth exactly like you.
Your needs are unique. You must meet your unique needs to realize your
true health potential.
It's true some people, no matter how they
live their life, seem to be robust and fit. They're among the few who've
been blessed with a strong genetic makeup and they don't seem to have
to work at being healthy.
If you're not one of them, don't worry there's still hope. It's just a matter of a little detective work.
First,
healthy foods are classified according to the nutrients they contain
and their potential to produce health enhancing benefits in general.
But, not all so-called healthy foods may be healthy for you.
You've
heard of some people being allergic to foods like eggs, peanuts or
dairy. Maybe you're one of them or you know someone who has food
allergies. While some people have severe, maybe even life-threatening
reactions to these foods, others thrive on them.
Generally with food allergies, your reaction is instantaneous or occurs within 2 hours of eating the food.
Another
kind of allergy, a hidden food allergy, causes a reaction anywhere from
several hours to 3 days after you've eaten the food. It can cause
migraines, digestive upset, arthritis, fatigue, skin disorders and many
more ailments you probably wouldn't associate with food. These are food
sensitivities or food intolerance.
When you eat foods you're
sensitive to, it causes an inflammatory reaction in your body. As long
as you continue to eat intolerant foods, the inflammation continues and
your health declines.
Suppose you're intolerant to foods like
broccoli or salmon. Everything you read tells you they're healthy foods
which protect you from things like cancer and heart disease. You eat
them frequently because they're supposed to be so good for you.
But
instead of feeling better, you feel worse. Your joints are getting
stiff. Your skin is breaking out. Headaches are occurring frequently.
You're frustrated. You're doing so many good things for your health and
instead of feeling better, you feel worse.
Does this sound like you or someone you know?
Food
sensitivities are insidious. Most people don't have a clue they're
sensitive to certain foods. And finding out what foods you're sensitive
to can be a challenge.
You can try to figure it out on your own by
following an elimination diet. However, this can take a long time to
determine all your sensitive foods and, in my experience, most people
can't stick with it long enough to determine all their sensitivities.
An easier way to discover your food sensitivities is the ALCAT Test. It's
a blood test that challenges the part of your immune system responsible
for food sensitivities against different foods to determine your immune
response. The strength of the response tells if you have a severe,
moderate or mild sensitivity or none at all.
You can choose to
test between 100 and 200 different foods. And in two weeks, you have a
report listing all your sensitive foods, the degree of sensitivity, and
your safe foods. It's that simple. Imagine how long it would take to
test that many foods on an elimination diet!

Some of you might think that eating a well-balanced diet for
adults is considered healthy food for children as well. This is not
entirely true. Although there is nothing really wrong with kids eating a
nutritious adult meal, kids require a specific nutritional profile to
fully address their growth and development needs. It is vit`l to cook
healthy food for children not only to supply their specific nutritional
requirements, but also to provide a solid foundation for proper
nutrition that lasts well into adulthood.
The Four Food Groups
Back
in the day, I grew up in a family where healthy food for children
consists of the four major food groups and the food pyramid. My parents
educated us on the value of proper nutrition at a very young age. We
used to have milk and cereal for breakfast, meat and vegetables for
lunch and dinner, and fruits in between and after meals. Junk food was
rare and we were asked to eat healthy alternatives instead.
The
same is true today. Healthy food for children still follows the same
philosophy: grains, dairy, meat, fruits, and vegetables. Kids should
never fall into a food rut. It is important to experiment with new
flavors each month. Cooking healthy food for children should include a
variety of food flavors. As soon as kids can eat hard food, try to mix
new food pairings that will entice their palate and appetite. A
variation of flavor in healthy food for children can help open their
minds to the wonders of healthy eating. This will become an invaluable
skill as they grow older.
Be Wary of the Fast Food Habit
Some
parents find it hard to cook healthy food for children due to their
demanding schedule. The best way to save time is to prepare simple,
delicious, and nutritious meals. You can get recipe ideas from books,
magazines, and even online. Try meal planning to save time and energy in
deciding what to cook for the coming weeks. Try not to reward kids with
fast food, and don't let it be your default meal due to a busy
schedule. I'm not suggesting that you should never eat fast food again.
The important thing to remember is that fast food can be a tempting
excuse not to cook healthy food for children.
Invite Kids in the Kitchen
What
better way to entice your kids to eat healthy than to invite them in
the kitchen. The next time you're cooking healthy food for children, ask
them to help you wash, stir, or prepare the ingredients. Cooking
healthy food for children is a great way to bond with your kids, while
teaching them simple cooking techniques, proper nutrition, and food
appreciation. There's a higher chance for kids to eat new foods that are
healthy when they are involved in the preparation.

The challenge most parents face is trying to get their children
eating healthy food. The subject of healthy eating is always a battle or
a struggle between parent and child, and many times both parties become
upset and frustrated.
The easiest way to get children eating
healthy food is to start them young. Children form their eating habits
before the age of ten. As a parent, focus on these formative years, and
shape their eating habits early. Always serve healthy food in your home,
and pack healthy lunches and snacks for your children. When you are in
someone else's home, be polite by eating their food, but teach your
children how to spot healthier options, and encourage them to go for
those options. While they're still very young, give them no choice and
they will probably not mind at all.
Another easy way to get
children eating healthy food is to get them interested in healthy foods.
Do this by having a range of healthy choices in your house. If you have
many different kinds of food, but all healthy, then you won't have to
worry about your children making the wrong choice.
Also, introduce
new foods like tofu, different fruit, and vegetables often.
Consistently having a new fruit or vegetable once a week should be
enough to spark your children's interest in the food groups. Play games
with your children, and have fun with colorful fruit. You can make fruit
men with your children, getting them interested in many fruits!
It
is important to remember setting an example for your children. You may
impose all these rules, but if you don't follow them yourself then your
children will see that they won't have to follow them someday either.
During their younger years, children want to be just like their parents.
If you show them that you eat healthy and you enjoy it, they will want
to do the same. Even when your children aren't around, choose the
healthier option. It'll be good practice for you and good for your
health too!
When taking on the healthy eating endeavor, remember
to be consistent. ALWAYS eat healthy and choose the healthy option. When
you go out to restaurants, choose the healthy option for your kids, and
show them how to choose the healthy options. Being consistent is the
key to having children that eat healthy all the time. If you eat healthy
food at home, but let your children eat unhealthy choices when they're
away from home, they're likely to develop a taste for food they
shouldn't be eating. So be consistent and it will pay off!

Patience, perseverance, and a little bit of creativity will go a
long way in making your kids eat healthy food for children. It is not
surprising that your little ones are perhaps the most notorious picky
eaters to date. Children prefer to eat unhealthy food options if you
tolerate them. However, that shouldn't always be the case. Now is the
best time to build a solid foundation for proper nutrition by teaching
and encouraging them to eat healthy food for children. Always remember
that healthy food for children consists of a variety of food
combinations from the four major food groups. As long as you are able to
strike a balance with all the food groups - dairy, meat protein,
fruits, vegetables, and grains - you're all set. Here are some useful
tips to get you started.
Introduce New Food Flavors One Step At A Time
Don't
allow your children to get in a food rut. Avoid serving them the same
meal over and over again. Start by browsing or reading through recipe
ideas from books, magazines, and even online. Gradually introduce new
food flavors, pairings, and recipes each week in combination with their
favorite food. You can start with greens. Dice new vegetables and
incorporate them with their favorite food like pasta, soup, omelet, or
casserole. Just make sure to mix it up every week by introducing new
ways to cook veggies with their favorite meals.
Involve Your Kids in Food Preparation
The
next time you go to the supermarket, bring your kids along and
encourage them to choose their own fruits and veggies. In cooking
healthy food for children, invite them to help you with the preparation.
Nothing too high profile. You can ask them to wash the produce, stir
the soup, or even help make fresh pasta at home. This is an excellent
way to make your kids appreciate the fun side of cooking and eating,
while also teaching them basic cooking skills. Studies have shown that
children are more likely to eat the food that they helped prepare.
Do Not Radically Eliminate Desserts or High-Fat Foods
The
key to healthy food for children, just like adults, is moderation.
There is no need to completely ban ice cream or fries from your kids
diet. If you do, it will only make them want more of these foods. What
you need to do is make sure they know what's good and bad for them.
There's always a room for sugary desserts or oily foods every so often.
Teach them the value of small portions for these kinds of foods, or
better yet find healthy alternatives that would still allow them to
enjoy the same flavor without compromising the nutritional value.
Be Creative in Plating and Serving
We
all know how children are enticed by anything visual especially colors.
Apply that in food. Have as much color variations as you can when
serving them their meals. You can even go as far as creating art pieces
with their fruits and veggies. Invite them to join you in making the
most visually appealing meals. Fruits and vegetables are already
colorful ingredients. All you need is some creativity in plating and
serving. Kids love dips. Why not create a delicious, low-fat veggie dip
that will entice them to eat their greens and fruits.
Do Not Bribe Your Kids Into Eating Their Veggies
Contrary
to popular belief, bribing kids to eat their vegetables can do more
harm than good. Do not bargain with your kids with rewards such as
having a full-on sugary dessert after eating vegetables etc. This will
only heighten negative food associations where vegetables are
requirements and desserts are fun, delicious rewards. Children tend to
bring these negative associations with them towards adulthood. Just
encourage them to eat one bite. Do not give up. They may not like it
immediately but that doesn't mean they are going to hate it forever.
Be A Role Model of Healthy Eating
This
is a critical aspect of teaching your kids to eat healthy. Set a good
example for them now as they are most likely to remember their parents
words, attitudes, and habits about healthy eating. Let them see what
they are missing. Eat your fruits and veggies; and let them know how
delicious and nutritious it is. You can go overboard and use your acting
skills if you want. Children are observant and keen about the elders
around them. Be that fun-loving, healthy eater they would want to
emulate as they grow older.

We have said that eating healthy foods will definitely help you
lose weight. And someone may ask what constitutes healthy foods? My
personal definition of healthy foods is the green vegetable foods and
fruits. These I also call the clean foods as they are clean, low in
calories and do not have any residues after eating them. Unlike the high
calorie foods and its fatty cousins which always leave bad residues of
waste in your system, fruits and vegetables do not leave such residues
that are why I see fruits and vegetables as healthy foods. On the meaty
side, clean foods include foods like chicken, turkey and fish.
These
meats are lean on fat and calories compared to raw beef. Lentils, dry
beans and peas are also passing as clean foods. When one starts eating
from the green vegetable and lean meat foods listed above, they will
start losing weight because of the fact that fruits, vegetables and
whole grain foods have high concentration of complex carbohydrates and
fiber in them which the body can slowly absorb them and thus cause our
hunger pangs to be satisfied quickly and efficiently.
The case
against processed foods is that because their nutritional values are low
and the fact that they do not make us feel full easily like the natural
foods, they do not make us feel satisfied and this like addiction
causes us to want to eat more of it when we know for sure that it is
against our weight loss or maintenance goals. I once read a book about
natural foods and the author said in that book that bad foods like drugs
leave behind their unhealthy residue of waste behind after eating them
so that as the residues stay in our system, it causes us to want to eat
more to cover up the poisoning effect of that residues. You see, when we
are not eating, our stomach gets into the mode for cleansing and when
that happens, the poisons are all bubbled up from the tissues of our
stomach into the surface.
When that happens we start feeling sick
or weak and this I have found out that when it happens will cause people
to eat more foods to stop the stomach's cleansing work thus stopping
the poisons from coming up to the surface and with this stopping comes
our relief from the weakness that the food residues now turning into
poison causes us to feel. Usually, people who undergo long periods of
fasting for detoxification purpose experience this effect but even if
you are not fasting one can still experience a mild form of this
experience which even that is not convenient. This explains why people
who eat junk food tend to eat more and that as already mentioned above
is to stop them from getting sick or weak from the poisons in their
stomachs that the stomach is trying to evict at ever chance of not
eating for a few hours of time.
Even though manufactures of food
argue that there is a need to include preservatives into our foods to
preserve them and make them last longer, the side effect of such
practice is not good as it has caused many of industrialized world's
health to deteriorate as it stands now. Perhaps our biggest nutritional
mistake has been turning away from foods in their natural state. We have
replaced them with processed foods that have been modified to last
longer, be easier to manufacture and distribute, and be more convenient
to store and use.
For example, when I go to the grocery store, I
see apple Juice that has no fiber at all and then when I go to a health
food store, I see apple Juice with the fiber in them. Unfortunately the
apple Juice with the fiber in them are expensive and they are not found
any where except in health food stores so a great majority of the
population do not get access to the healthy apple Juice except the one
that has been heavily processed and all the fiber taken out from them.
The apple Juice with the fiber in them are the good ones because they
are full of fiber and are able to help aid weight loss and good health.
The apple Juice with no fiber is usually full of added sugars and they
tend to contain more calories than the regular apple or the apple Juice
with the fiber. This is to say that process foods are not good that is
why they are usually less expensive than the healthy unprocessed
equivalents.
Natural foods are good for our health and can easily
aid us in losing weight and staying healthy. It is full of vitamins,
minerals and fiber and contains cancer fighting antioxidants that are
contained in natural unprocessed foods. These foods help reduce the risk
of suffering from diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer
and even help us to reduce weight and stay fit and healthy.
The
foods that are processed may be added to what I call the bad foods as
they are usually not healthy for us and contain lots of salt, sugars,
preservative, saturated and Trans fats. Most nutritionist will tell you
that the outer skin of foods in general are more nutrients than even the
part that we think we must eat but unfortunately the outer parts of
foods is what is thrown away as unfit for food. Take potato for example,
the outer skin is more nutritious than the inner food but yet most
people will throw out the outer skin and eat the starch within it. Since
processed foods do not have fiber in them and are full of additives and
food dyes for color they are not healthy for us and in most cases can
make one sick.
The human body needs clean environment to stay
healthy and eating foods doused with foreign chemicals and ingredients
will not help us at all but will make people worse off. But as suggested
above, eating healthy natural foods with high natural fiber and
nutrients are good for us and can help us to lose weight and remain
healthy and thin. It will cause you not to be hungry needlessly but will
help shield you from the hunger pangs and cause you to stay slim,
healthy and enjoy your life fully. Always remember that it is not about
taste or quantity of food that matters but it is the quality of the food
and the health it promotes that matters and with no food residues left
in our system will also mean that craving for the bad foods will be
eliminated or drastically reduced.

Undoubtedly, burning fat is about consuming healthy food. When we
eat right, eat healthy food, we do not have to bother about burning fat
anymore. Working out at the gym for hours burning calories will not
reduce your weight and burn enough of your fat when you do not consider
what you consume. It means that burning fat by only doing exercise is
not enough. Yes, you can burn fat and lose some of your weight by doing
exercise but if you do not maintain what goes in from your mouth, soon
you will get back the fat you burn. The root problem is controlling what
goes into your body. And consuming healthy food is the solution.
What
does it mean by consuming healthy food? The term healthy is very much
dependent on the amount and frequency in consuming the food. There is no
single food that contains all the nutrition our body needs. Thus,
consuming healthy food actually talks about series of eating healthy
foods over time, in other words, having healthy eating lifestyle. You do
not get healthier right after you eat a lettuce; neither do you get
significantly higher cholesterol by eating a piece of fried chicken. It
is the series of eating those foods that affects your health. It is the
constant action of eating the food you choose that affects your body.
Thus, healthy eating lifestyle is what is important.
How to choose
healthy food? There are two common characteristics of healthy food.
First, the food is unprocessed. Second, the food is organic.
First,
the food is unprocessed. It means we eat what the nature gives. Most of
the food is provided on our table after several processes. They are
boiled, fried, grilled, or preserved. Most of these processes do not
make the food healthier. The unprocessed food includes fresh fruits and
fresh vegetable. To name some, whole grains, legumes, raw nuts, fresh
sprouts, etc. Probably the only process that the food can go through is
the process of cleaning. The food has to be made fresh on our table as
if we eat it directly after we pluck them.
Why do we avoid
processing food? After processed, the food may lose the very nutrition
that our body needs; lose entirely or some in quantity. For example, we
lose healthy vegetable nutrients after we cook them. After processed,
the food may contain ingredient that is dangerous for our body. For
example, higher concentration of heterocyclic amines (HCA) or polycyclic
aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) after grilling process. HCA and PAH can
cause cancer. PAH is also found in tobacco smoke.
Second, the food
is organic. It means we eat pesticides-free food. The food is natural,
not genetically engineered, and irradiated. This kind of food offers you
the highest nutrition and the purest taste of all the food available.
Choose the organic food when you go to restaurant. Include organic food
in your monthly shopping list. Select packaged food that has organic
label, although you might need to check further on this one. Go organic.
Not
only the selection of kind of food that are concerned, but also the
nutrition that the food contains. Among carbohydrates, protein, and fat,
protein is the one that uses more calories to burn. What does it mean?
It means when you consume more protein, your body burns more calories.
When your body burns more calories, your body is using more energy. It
is identical to have you run in a longer period on your treadmill. It
burns more of your body fat. Thus, the food that you consume determines
how you will burn fat and lose weight.
Finally, your dream to burn
more fat is not only about exercise. Exercise is, by all means, really
good. But you also need to watch the food that you eat. By having
healthy eating lifestyle, rest be assured that it avoids the fat you
burn to come back filling up your body again. Consider healthy food as
your daily menu. Filter your food choice. Get rid of those unhealthy
foods. Make eating healthy food your lifestyle; choose unprocessed and
organic food. You will be amazed how this can work in your progress of
losing your weight.

Getting your kids to eat healthy is a tricky challenge. Kids give
plenty of reasons as why they do not want to eat certain kinds of
healthy foods. They would not even take a single bite even though they
have never tried it, and to the fact that they think they may be
allergic to the food in subject. Kids are masters at dodging the healthy
notion of food, they simply opt out of the family meal and prefer after
school and after dinner snacks.
There are, however, some tips to
get your kids to eat healthy foods. In any case, children would always
pick on the food they want, why not know what your kids eat and build
your own weaponry to get them to eat the food they do not want to.
Be a Role Model
Children
are great imitators. Their minds easily absorb everything they see.
Setting a good example by continually trying to eat healthy foods in
front of and with your children can help shape their thoughts about
eating healthy foods. Demonstrating the adventure of trying new things
and eating new food from time to time can be fun and intriguing. In
time, the kids will see the importance of eating healthy foods.
Plan Meal Together
Kids
love exciting activities. They are engrossed when they have the
opportunity to get into a hands-on position. Provide your children with
an array of healthy options to make it easier to pick some healthy
foods, and allow them to help prepare and cook the meals. Always use
cookware sets designed for safe and healthier cooking. Kids would love
to pick the size of pan they like from the different sizes in the
cookware set, plus they will enjoy making their own gravies from pan
drippings. This will increase the chance children will like and eat the
food, as kids opt to eat something they made.
Keep healthy Options
You
will not like to watch your kids head right for ice-cream with
chocolate sauce and whip cream for a snack. Children like to make their
own decisions to the types of foods they want to eat. It may be
important to offer your kids a variety of choices, but always keep
healthy foods at the house. If your kids only have healthy foods to
choose from, you eventually will get them to eat healthy. Just remember
to respect their likes and dislikes with some options so they do not get
bored, and teach your kids moderation in their indulgences.
Conclusion
Getting
your children to eat healthy at a young age develops a good lifestyle.
Interacting with all of their senses like trying healthy foods could be
fun and intriguing. The key is to involve the kids in preparing meals.
They will not only see the importance of the right choices of food, but
develop their sense of pride and accomplishment as well.
If all
else fails, try blending some fruits and veggies with a little honey.
Since these are the foods kids do not like, you need to be tricky. Use a
good immersion blender for a speedy and no messy transfer of
ingredients from pot to blender to pouring vessel. The instant
mouth-watering smoothie is actually good for them and they will not
distinguish it as the food they do not want. Creating ideas by hiding
the foods they do not like inside of foods they love is a great way to
get picky kids to eat healthy foods.

Healthy foods for kids are the same foods that are good for the rest
of us to eat. There is no magical combination of foods that are specific
for each age group.
However, getting kids who may be used to
consuming the worst foods to eat, the fast foods and junk foods wrapped
in cellophane, can be a chore. Even this impediment to healthy eating
can be overcome with a little diligence and effort on your part.
Any
healthy diet plan begins and ends with the foods you allow in your
house. Yes, you truly are the master of your domain and it is up to you
to make sure only good healthy foods get into your kitchen.
Balanced Healthy Diet
Getting
kids to eat healthy may seem like a formidable task but it can be done.
You just have to take baby steps to wean them off junk food and get
acclimated to healthier foods.
A good place to start is the whole
grains because kids love carbohydrates. Besides, the transition from
refined grain breads, pasta, and cereals to whole grain products is
relatively easy.
These are definitely healthy foods for kids and you will like them also.
Daily Nutritional Needs
Whole grains should make up a large part of your daily diet.
Whole
grains comprise healthy diets for teens, are foods that lower blood
sugar, and help avoid some of the causes of child obesity.
The
list of whole grains is long. But of more importance to you is the list
of healthy foods to eat available in your supermarket that contains
whole grains.
Healthy Diet Menu
Many inexpensive healthy recipes can be used to make delicious meals from the whole grain category.
That list includes:
* Whole grain breads.
* Whole grain cereals from oats, whole kernel corn, or whole wheat.
* Whole grain pasta made from whole wheat or spelt.
* Corn meal that has not been degerminated makes great corn bread.
* Corn chips made from the entire kernel of corn.
* Brown or wild rice (or mixes of both).
Even snacks may make
up a large portion of a kid's daily nutritional needs. So you better put
some effort into supplying them with healthy foods at snack time.
Many kids will choose to eat a raw carrot stick instead of a gooey, sugary snack if given the choice.

Heart disease is one of the main causes of death among adults
worldwide. All of us know there is good healthy food for the heart.
Healthy eating is all about enjoying a variety of foods from the
different food groups. Unfortunately, when it comes to our health and
nutrition, our society seems predisposed towards making us choose the
unhealthy options. Why should you consume healthy foods for your heart?
Learning to eat healthy foods is not a science reserved for the elite.
For a healthy and sound body, all you need to do is substitute harmful
food with healthy food alternatives.
A recent study discovered
that nearly one third of the people today studied have got undetectable
amounts of omega 3 fatty acids within their blood stream, putting these
people at more significant possibility for heart problems, stroke, being
diabetic, and cognitive complications. Omega 3 also reduces the risk of
heart attack. While being a very popular and heart-healthy food rich in
omega 3 fatty acids, salmon is also a very tasty food. Consistently
seafood is described as "brain food" and of late experts have included
"rich in Omega 3" and "heart healthy" on labeling. To prepare a
heart-healthy food, try baked salmon steak with vegetables and a salad
dressed with lemon juice (instead of a vinaigrette sauce which is too
rich in calories)
Brazil nuts contain mono-saturated fats that
make it a healthy food for the heart. Parsley contains several important
flavonoids, and this makes it a healthy food for the heart. Enjoying
some dark chocolate bars is similar to obtaining the identical
antioxidant content provided by a couple of glasses of burgandy or
merlot wine or three servings of Asian tea extract. If you miss milk
shakes, try a low-fat fruit smoothie, instead. Soluble fiber also helps
keep your digestive system healthy. Apples, nuts and oats are an
excellent source of soluble fiber. Eat an apple with a handful of
walnuts or almonds as a healthy treat or add slices of apples to salads.
In addition Nuts lower the LDL (bad) cholesterol and the risk of heart
disease. Research shows that if you lower your blood cholesterol levels,
you lower your risk of coronary disease and stroke. Whole grains are
another source of soluble fiber and provide vitamins to help maintain a
healthy heart. The soluble fiber binds with cholesterol, which is then
shunted out of the body, and their level falls. These good fats will
also keep your cholesterol levels low.
In spite of what the
thousands of seemingly "healthy" products claim, the truth is there are
no shortcuts to becoming fit and healthy. It is a conscious effort and
choice. Our purpose is to help make the healthier alternative easier to
choose. Most people can lower their cholesterol by choosing an active
lifestyle, achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight, and eating
better. Eating healthy for your heart is something everybody should
attempt to do, particularly when it comes to restoring health and
reducing cardiovascular disease.

In the modern era of having everything at the touch of a
fingertip, a diet plan has become a trend to reduce weight. Having a
healthy diet food is important to have proper and controlled diet.
Basically it's necessary to stick to a particular diet chart when on a
diet. Diet chart is a plan to meet up with proper nutritional
requirements. Healthy diet food is the key to having a prosperous
lifestyle and staying away from diseases. It is difficult to achieve a
healthy lifestyle if we do not consume healthy food.
Healthy diet
may be followed for reducing weight or gaining proper weight. Also in
case of certain health problems such as hypertension and diabetes,
doctors recommend a diet plan. Diet food is mostly comprised of:

Fresh fruits/Dry fruits- They have a great supply of energy, vitamins and minerals. Also provide refreshment to the body.

Vegetables- Essential for providing proteins and carbohydrates, Vegetables are the main constituent of any dietary meal.

Dairy products- For supplying the energy and providing certain nutrients.

Grain products- Rich sources of proteins and nutrients.

We may as well define the healthy foods into three categories:

Healthy protein diet food- This category includes the
protein rich food. Fish, poultry products, dairy products; dry fruits
etc are the main components of this category.

Healthy carbohydrates food- It comprises of sources abundant in
carbohydrates. Mainly rice, sweet potatoes, beans are the main sources
of it.

Healthy fat diet food- Though having much fatty food can cause
obesity, having fats in a limited manner can be healthy. Oil
supplements, seeds, peanuts, butter, ghee are a rich source of fats.
Fats if consumed in a controlled manner can be classified as a part of
healthy weight loss food.

A balanced healthy diet
food must contain food from all the above three sources in a harmonious
way. It helps in maintaining a proper and smooth lifestyle if we stick
to healthy food. Many people follow a particular diet for a small period
of time and then leave it. It's important to note that healthy diet
foods must be consumed continuously to maintain a fit body.
Most
people think healthy diet food is quite bad in taste and there is no
variety available to eat from. Weight loss food is quite savoury and has
lots of items as well. Oily and junk food is not a part of healthy
food. These food items are likely to cause many diseases and hazardous
illnesses. For having a healthy diet one needs to avoid them. People who
enjoy unhealthy diet food are likely to suffer from dangerous diseases
such as cancer, hyper-tension, heart diseases and diabetes.
One
must consume the correct amount of calories as calculated according to
the diet plan. Each food item carries particular calories. It's
necessary to consult a nutritional expert regarding the amount of
calories a particular food item provides. Consuming healthy food is one
way to stay away from illnesses and staying fit. It is the key element
for staying fit!!!

Heart healthy foods are - in a nutshell - foods that are high in
antioxidants, B vitamins, phytonutrients, fiber and good fats -
monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Please do click on the links
to learn about how these nutrients greatly benefit your heart. The key
to having a healthy heart is to follow a "whole-foods diet" which simply
means to eat food in its natural form - the less processed the better.
That means plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. There is such a
great variety of delicious foods that are so good for your heart - and
of course the rest of your body benefits greatly as well.
It is quite interesting to know what the beneficial nutrients in heart healthy foods are:

Phytosterols are plant sterols that reduce cholesterol and are contained in all seeds and nuts as well as wheat germ.

Polyphenols are antioxidants that reduce the bad LDL cholesterol,
lower blood pressure and protect blood vessels. Flavonoids are well
known polyphenols and are found in fruits and vegetables.

Carotenoids are fat soluble chemicals that are found in the
pigment of many colourful fruits and vegetables. They are important
heart-protecting anioxidants. Beta carotene is a carotenoid and is found in orange, carrots, sweet potato and squash for example. Lutein is found in dark green vegetables such as broccoli as well as the yellow in egg yolk and bell peppers. Lycopene is found in red tomatoes, apricots, watermelon, papaya and grapefruit to name a few.

Omega 3 fatty acids found in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel
and sardines as well as nuts and seeds such as walnuts and flaxseeds
help protect against heart attacks - but this is only one of many health
benefits associated with these essential fats.

Vitamins and minerals - especially antioxidant vitamins C and E
which protect cells from free radical damage. Minerals that help lower
blood pressure are calcium, magnesium and potassium.

B-complex vitamins, especially folic acid/folate (vitamin B9) and
vitamin B6 protect against hardening of the arteries and blood clots.
Vitamin B3, known as niacin helps raise the good HDL cholesterol in the
blood.

Fiber is of course incredibly important to our general good
health. One way it helps the heart is to help lower bad LDL cholesterol
levels.

As we can see, there are some foods that are especially
high in these heart healthy nutrients which protect your heart and blood
vessels. These wonderful healthy foods are listed below. These are all
everyday foods that we can very easily and deliciously incorporate into
our daily diet.

Almonds - contain good fats that keep cholesterol levels in check and are also a great source of vitamin E, protein and fiber.

Apples - contain quercetin which is an anti-inflammatory which
will also help prevent blood clots. They are also high in vitamins,
minerals and fiber.

Asparagus- a good source of beta carotene and lutein (carotenoids), B vitamins, folic acid/folate and fiber.

Beans - are high in fiber and B vitamins which keep the heart healthy.

Berries - are high in flavonoids, beta carotene and lutein
(carotenoids), polyphenols, fiber, vitamins and minerals which are great
for heart health.

In general, kids like to eat healthy. They love foods like fruit,
yoghurt, milk and cereals. But unfortunately, the huge amount of
chocolates and chips they see and are offered everywhere often makes
them crave for these foods and rather rejecting the healthy foods you
serve them.
But with some simple tricks, you can easily make your kids eat healthy foods, sometimes even without them noticing it:

Hide the veggies in foods your child loves

Serve healthy foods with foods your child loves to make them more attractive

Serve foods in a way your child likes them

Make desserts, sweets and chips a bonus treat for eating the healthy food

Make your kids help preparing the meal

Trick #1: Hide the veggies in foods your child loves

Finely chop vegetables and pack them into a meatloaf or meat balls.
Your child won't even notice they are there. Especially mushrooms and
aubergines can barely be seen as they take up a similar color like the
meat. You can also use this trick for your minced meat when making a
burger. Which child would reject a burger?

If your child likes milk and yoghurt but refuses to eat fruit,
puree the fruit secretly and mix it into the yoghurt. Tell your child
it is fruit yoghurt you bought just like that. Or make a smoothie or
milk shake. Maybe add some honey to make it sweeter and tastier.

Trick #2: Serve healthy foods with foods your child loves to make them more attractive

Serve fruit or fruit puree with ice cream.

Pack fruit into your chocolate or vanilla cream.

Serve a small portion of the veggies your child doesn't like with other vegetables and chips.

Put various vegetables into your pasta tomato sauce.

Pour a vegetable puree over the pasta, or make chutney to serve with the chips or crackers.

strong>Trick #3: Serve foods in a way your child likes them

Maybe your child doesn't have a general problem with the food itself but rather with its texture.

If your child doesn't like tomatoes, try tomato sauce, canned tomatoes or tomato soup.

If he doesn't like a certain fruit, make a jelly of it and put it
on his sandwich for breakfast or mix it in his yoghurt as a snack.

Try stewed or canned fruit instead of fresh fruit. Buy canned
fruit in fruit juice rather than syrup as these products don't have
sugar added.

Make your child's plate look interesting. For example, cut the
fruit and arrange it as a picture. Some butchers also sell special
polony for kids in the shape of a funny face or a teddy bear.

Trick #4: Make desserts, sweets and chips a bonus treat for eating the healthy food

This strategy requires some determination from your side and might
well result in some tantrums but should be quite effective after a
while. Don't ever give in! Eventually your child will give up.

If your child refuses a certain healthy food, tell him he will only get dessert if he finishes his lunch.

Chips and sweets will only be given after eating the whole dinner.

Just make sure not to overload your child's plate. In that case
you might be punishing him for not overeating which would certainly be
wrong.

Trick #5: Make your kids help preparing the meal

Children are much more willing to eat a meal when they helped preparing it.

Give your child any task he can perform, like peeling the fruit,
cutting the vegetables, stirring the food etc. The more you involve him
in the cooking process, the better.

When following these five tricks, your child will eventually eat at
least some of the healthy foods. Focus on one food or one trick at a
time, and when your child accepts this food, move on to the next one.
Your child has developed his eating habits over time and will only
gradually change them.

Revealed - 7 Reasons to Eat Colorful Healthy Foods For Healthy Weight Loss

In order to lose weight and keep it off for good, a healthy way
of eating foods is required. The more you add nutrient-dense foods into
your daily diet, the more success you will have with leading a healthy
lifestyle. Eating junk food all the time is what made you become fat.
When you return to eating traditional and natural foods, you restore
your health. When the body is healthy, it can perform its own miracles.
Most
people think that the way to eat better for weight loss is through
bland salads and products that say Fat Free on their labels. Nothing
could be further from the truth, and that is why so many people struggle
with their weight. All you really need to know is that the more
colorful your plate looks, the healthier it is for you to consume.
Healthy
foods can be classified by their color energy, which organizes their
nutritional effects, taste, and actions of their properties and common
healing qualities. The following list is of food categorized by color
and the reasons why each group helps a person to lose weight in a
healthy way.
Colorful Healthy Foods #1. Red Foods = Protein
Red
foods such as strawberries, raspberries, cherries, tomatoes, watermelon
are a great source of protein. Protein is essential for weight loss
because it builds muscle, and the more muscle you have the more calories
you burn. What happens when you try to lose weight without eating
protein? You get a sickly look like you are not getting enough
nutrition. Red foods are also provide lots of vitamins and minerals such
as Vitamin C and beta-carotene.
Colorful Healthy Foods #2. Orange Foods = Detoxification
Eating
lots of apricots, peaches, oranges, mango, sweet potatoes, carrots,
pumpkins, squash, orange/yellow peppers will help detoxify the body and
help you maintain good vision, bone and tooth development. This is
because they help rid your body of toxins. Orange foods also make the
skin healthy so when you lose weight in a healthy way, you will not wind
up with a sagging look.
Colorful Healthy Foods #3. Yellow Foods = Power
When
you lack energy in your diet, it can lead to poor memory, lack of
concentration, tension, irritability, digestive problems and a lack of
proper nutrient absorption. Add yellow foods into your diet, such as
lemons, bananas, grapefruits, rice, corn, and eggs. Energy from these
foods is essential for weight loss because a busy person burns calories a
lot faster than someone too sedentary to get off the couch and move
around.
Colorful Healthy Foods #4. Green Foods= Well Being
Green
foods such as asparagus, spinach, broccoli, romaine lettuce, zucchini,
green peppers, green apples, pears, avocados, green grapes, kiwi and
limes, contain the most powerful combination of nutrients in any grain,
herb or food source. Not only do they maintain your energy all day long,
but they will also create a sense of well-being. This means you will
experience an optimum balance for total health, so you will not feel
hunger cravings as much.
Colorful Healthy Foods #5. Blue And Purple Foods = Improved Circulation
These
foods are considered high in anti-cancer properties, and are helpful
for the voice, and the organs and glands of the neck. These foods also
contain nutrients that help improve circulation after eating, so they
work best when added to any meal that is high in fat which causes the
body to become sluggish because blood flow slows. Blueberries, plums,
grapes are all great examples.
Colorful Healthy Foods #6. No Color Food = Meal Replacement
Whenever
you are in doubt, help yourself to a soy-based protein shake. This is
how I lost 70 pounds in 4 months and have kept if off for over 15 years.
Sometimes you need a break from traditional food, specifically to get
the kind of nutrition that can only come from soy. Adding colorful
fruits into a shake will help accelerate weight loss and good health
even more. Want an added special bonus tip? Drinking one cup of green
tea burns off almost 100 calories and speeds up metabolism at the same
time!
Colorful Healthy Foods #7. Beige and Tan Foods = Danger
Last
but certainly not least is the food color group you want to stay away
from whenever possible. If you look at your plate and see nothing but
browns, tans and beiges, chances are good that you are not getting the
best nutrition possible and it will slow down your weight loss. Stay
away from cookies, cakes, burgers, hot dogs, pies, donuts...you know,
all the stuff that made you fat. Eating these foods in moderation is OK,
but more often than not you should be replacing them with colorful
foods.
Eating has different purposes but the bottom line is that
the more colorful ealthy Foods are in your diet, the better chance you
will have at keeping yourself healthy and at an ideal weight. Living a
healthy lifestyle and developing the mindset that goes aslong with it
are the compenents of weight loss that most people never grasp. Instead
of struggling with diet fads and magic pills, pay more attention to the
colors on your plate and you will find yourself well on your way to
weight loss success.

In today's world of highly advertised fad diets, it is very
difficult for us to know which foods are actually healthy and which
foods are not. This program says not to eat an apple, while this other
program tells us it keeps the doctor away. Once and for all, we need to
know which foods are nutritious so we can all jump off the weight loss
roller coaster.
Before I get into the details, it is important to
stress that weight loss without proper nutrition is not the road you
want to take. No magic pill will ever give you the benefits of eating
properly. Stop looking for short cuts and get serious about your health.
It is the only way to live a lifestyle that is free of the threats of
disease, poor health and obesity.
Healthy Foods Tip #1: Green Vegetables
Vegetables
such as spinach and cabbage are very significant in maintaining a
healthy body. They are rich in vitamins and minerals. How do they help
accelerate weight loss? They are water-rich, which means you are
actually filling yourself up with liquids instead of fatty calories.
Healthy Foods Tip #2: Fatty Fish
Did
you read that right? Yes, it says fatty! Oily fish such as salmon,
mackerel and sardines have omega-3 fats. Despite all the hoopla
surrounding the fat-free weight loss craze, your body does in fact need
good fat for optimal weight loss performance. Omega-3 fats also takes
care of our heart. It prevents stroke and lowers bad cholesterol in our
body.
Healthy Foods Tip #3: Green Tea
Anti-oxidants rid our
bodies of free radials that can cause damage to our cells and slow the
process of healthy weight loss. Green tea offers such a powerful supply
of anti-oxidants and vitamins that it has been known to accelerate
metabolism by drinking only one cup per day. Tomatoes, red grapes and
blueberries are also beneficial for the same reasons, but on a smaller
scale.
Healthy Foods Tip #4: Citrus fruits
Oranges, lemons,
limes and other citrus fruits are all high in Vitamin C. That helps to
prevents colds, asthma and arthritis. What happens when your body is
functioning without illness? It performs better! When your body gets the
right nutrition, it can perform its own miracles...like giving you more
energy and burning off extra weight.
Healthy Foods Tip #5: Carrots
Have
you ever heard someone say carrots were unhealthy? I guess they would
be if you ate tons of them every day, just like anything else that is
abused. The reality is that carrots are good source of Vitamin A and
promotes better eyesight. It only takes a half cup worth to work like
magic to accelerate healthy weight loss.
Healthy Foods Tip #6. Bananas
This
fruit is so nutrition that even monkeys know it is good for them. It
can help cure ulcers, diarrhea and stomach cramps because it is high in
potassium. If you sweat a lot and need energy, grab a banana. Many
athletes consume bananas for energy and alertness. Have you ever seen an
overweight monkey or athlete?
Healthy Foods Tip #7: Soy
The
soybean is as close to a magic weight loss pill as you will ever find.
No, you can not pop them into your mouth and watch the pounds melt away,
but when you add soy into your daily diet, you will be amazed to see
how quickly your health and weight loss improve at the same time.
Soy-based protein smoothies helped me to lose 70 pounds in 4 months 15
years ago. And yes, I still have the weight off!
Healthy Foods Tip #8 Apples
An
apple a day keeps the doctor away. It has vitamin C and pectin that
flushes out toxins in our body. Toxins are probably the number one
reason why people can not lose weight quickly when they eat healthy
foods. Apples only work to your advantage when they are eaten raw, so
dipping them into caramel sauce or cooking them into a pie will not keep
the doctor away.
Healthy Foods Tip #9. Water
It may not be
food but it is the most important part of your daily diet. Your body can
not function properly if it is dehydrated, and most people do not drink
as much as they should. Water also makes you feel full without any
calories. Many times people reach for a snack when all they really need
is a glass of water.
Along with a daily diet of the foods listed
above, you need discipline and a willingness to reach your healthy
weight loss goals. Most people get discouraged with losing weight when
they fail to grasp the concept of living a healthy lifestyle. Once you
develop this mindset, eating healthy will be part of your daily
routine...and battling weight gain will be a thing of the past.

Why do we crave unhealthy foods? A healthy weight loss diet program
often becomes a battleground between our desire to lose weight quickly,
and snack cravings based on unhealthy food choices. We may not be what we eat, but research indicates that we desire the foods that we have grown accustomed to eating, so you could say that we crave what
we eat. If you have created a pattern of eating ice cream for pleasure
or when under stress, it should be no surprise that you will have a
hankering for ice cream under the right conditions. Pavlov's Dog, by any
other name, is still Pavlov's Dog.
But if we have, in effect,
trained ourselves to want unhealthy snacks or foods, the reverse may
also be true: we can train ourselves to crave healthy snacks and food.
If we can do this, a bland tasting weight loss supplement could become
just as desirable as a sweet roll.
I never craved coffee until I
started drinking it. The same goes for double chocolate chip ice cream.
The taste for coffee and chocolate must be learned through exposure to
these foods and their flavors. If people who live in more primitive
cultures in the jungle can have a hankering to snack on creepy-crawly
insects unique to their habitat, surely we can develop our own desire
for a decent, healthy snack, healthy fast food, and healthy food recipe
choices when preparing meals.
So how do we re-program ourselves to
turn a craving for sweets into something on the healthy food list? To
quote a line from a movie, "Build it and they will come." In this case,
if we build the habit of making healthy food choices at meal and snack
time, we will begin to want those foods instead of the ones we've given
up.
There is a lot of pleasure associated with these snacking
experiences, and most of us are reluctant to give them up. But if we can
get ourselves to substitute some simple healthy food and snack recipes,
we can train our mental and physical taste buds to desire them, and a
new pleasure-association will be formed around the new healthy food
choice or recipe.
Recent research has proven this. The results
showed that new cravings can be formed to replace old ones, even though
the new ones are based on bland, healthy foods, and the original ones
were the tried and true fat and sugar tasty delights. The best news? It
may only require one week to do it.
I've addressed some healthy
snack ideas to use for re-training our cravings in another article. (It
contains healthy snack ideas that also apply to children.) For now, I'll
give just a few examples of healthy snack food substitutions.
If
you don't want such a jolt to your taste buds right out of the gate, you
can make it a two-step process in some cases. For example, when the
seemingly uncontrollable urge for chocolate ice cream hits, instead have
a coffee cup or glass of Chocolate Ovaltine and milk. Ovaltine is not
like the junky chocolate milk mixes pitched to kids. Think of it instead
as a healthy fast food snack. It contains vitamins and minerals, and if
you use one or two tablespoons instead of the recommended four, not too
much sugar.
Step two: Purchase a good chocolate flavored whey
protein mix from your local health food supplier (or the flavor of your
choice) and use it instead of the Ovaltine. These protein supplements
are not anything like they used to be. In the past, they would NOT mix
without a blender, and they tasted pretty bad. Not so anymore. They mix
quickly by simply stirring or shaking, and the flavors are quite good.
Trust me.
Now you've turned a fat and sugar ice cream binge into a
healthy fast food choice: a protein supplement! In addition, it's far
more filling and satisfying. You won't be tempted to eat anything as
quickly as you would if you had succumbed and eaten ice cream.
Don't
think this will work? Well, I can vouch for it personally, and tests
done on regular everyday people like us have proven the same. In fact,
it worked when very bland but healthy food recipes and snack substitutes
were used instead of the usual tasty treats, and in only a week's time.
People actually craved the bland tasting healthy snack food in
preference to their old unhealthy treats.

When we shop at the market or go to a restaurant our first
thought is to get food we like to eat and know. There are several foods
out there that do not often make it into the shopping cart.
We
always think that we don't want that or don't have time to fix that, but
the reality is it doesn't take any more time to prepare a well balanced
and nutritious meal than going to the drive through and getting
something unhealthy when you calculate the time it takes to get through a
line of ten cars or ten people in the restaurant.
Below you will find a list of ten foods you should be eating and reasons why.
Healthy Food #1 - Beets
The
first item on the list is beets. Yeah, I know. I'm not one for beets
either, but if you pick up a fresh beet from the supermarket rather than
the can you will be getting a better taste as well as a healthy food.
The beet is like red spinach it offers you a great source of folate and
betaine. These are two nutrients that can help you lower your blood
levels and decrease your risk of heart disease. Sounds pretty good
right?
Healthy Food #2 - Cabbage
Cabbage is
another source of great vitamins and you don't just have to through it
in a salad. You can put cabbage on burgers, eat it in coleslaw, or even
Asian style cabbage in your next Chinese dinner dish. Cabbage is just
22 calories of food and contains so many vitamins, it is one of the
reason those on an Asian or European diet are healthier. You will find
that cabbage contains sulforaphane, which helps boost your immunity to
breast cancer. There are many healthy foods that can actually help us
fight disease, so you may want to start eating a few.
Healthy Food #3 - Guava
Guava
is not a very popular fruit in some cultures, but it is one of the best
fruits to take. Guava contains lycopene, which is an antioxidant that
fights prostate cancer. You will find that tomatoes and watermelon have
some of the lycopene, but it isn't as much as guava. Guava actually
has a sweeter flavor than other fruits. It is less acidic so it usually
goes down great. For those who can't handle oranges or pineapple this
is a pretty great treat. You can eat the fruit plain, make a juice, or
have a fruit bowl with bananas and other fruits that also offer you some
great nutrients.
Healthy Food #4 - Swiss Chard
Swiss
Chard is not a popular item by any means, but again it is very healthy
for you. Swiss Chard is a leafy green, which is found in the
Mediterranean. You will find that this particular plant contains lutein
and zeaxanthin along with carotenoids that help with your eyesight.
The carotenoids help reduce the damage of aging to the retinas. This
particular plant is good with steak or chicken after it has been
steamed.
Healthy Food #5 - Cinnamon
Who
doesn't love cinnamon? Surprisingly many of us don't get enough
cinnamon. You don't have to have cinnamon in a cinnamon roll, but you
can certainly add it to many recipes. It is a great way to help reduce
your blood sugar and the risk of heart disease. You can just sprinkle
it on oatmeal or even in your coffee depending on what you like most.
Healthy Food #6 - Purslane
Purslane
is a vegetable found in Mexico, China, and Greece among other
countries. It is a broad leaved weed. You will find this edible plant
has more melatonin in it than other fruits and vegetables. This means
that you will have an antioxidant in your body that naturally reduces
the risk of cancer. Most often this purslane is found among salads.
Healthy Food #7 - Pomegranate
Going
back to juices for a minute you will find that the pomegranate juice is
one of the most highly recommended juices to purchase. Everyone used
to drink orange juice, but now it is pomegranate juice. The pomegranate
juice regulates your body, by offering more energy as well as helping to
reduce blood pressure. 4 ounces of pomegranate juices provides 50
percent of your daily vitamin C needs as well.
Healthy Food #8 - Goji Berries
Goji
Berries is another great fruit to help you reduce the risk of disease;
specifically you will help reduce the likelihood of having diabetes when
you eat these berries. The Goji Berries are a medical food from Tibet.
They have been around for more than 1700 years. You will find that
they have an antioxidant that helps reduce diabetes because it offers a
way to reduce insulin resistance. You can eat them as a juice, plain,
or with yogurt.
Healthy Food #9 - Plums
Plums,
especially dried plums which are prunes are another healthy source of
food. Prunes offer chlorogenic acid, and antioxidants that are able to
reduce the risk of cancer. You will find that prunes are also a great
help in regulating the body if you suffer from constipation. You can
eat the prunes by themselves or sprinkle them over a prosciutto and back
for a few minutes.
Healthy Food #10 - Pumpkin Seeds
The
last item on the list is the pumpkin seeds. While we just think about
pumpkin seeds during Halloween in most cases you will find that they are
a great source of natural minerals our bodies need. They contain
magnesium as well as antioxidants. Pumpkin seeds can help reduce the
risk of cancer in that they provide more oxygen to your cells and there
is less damage. They can usually be found near the peanuts or almonds in
a store.

Did you know that our society is in the midst of a health craze?
Any way you turn there is information about being healthier. Eating healthy foods
is obviously one of the best ways to improve your health. However when
people hear those two words they think of boring, bland foods that are
widely available as a natural food co-op. Although healthy foods are things that you have eaten almost every day, at times just prepared in a different way.
Healthy
foods as well as eating habits are pleasing both to the palate and
plate. However one must remember that healthy foods is that the closer
the food is to its natural state the healthier it is for you. Firstly
you can start changing your eating habits to more healthy foods by
cutting down on the number of prepared foods that you eat. Prepackaged
foods are loaded with preservatives and artificial ingredients. Sure
packaged foods are convenient, but healthy foods can be also, especially
once you get into the habit of preparing them.
Healthy foods are
very easy to prepare. In fact it doesn't take much time or money to eat
healthy foods. Here is a simple example of a fantastic meal that is easy
to prepare, low-priced and features healthy foods. Grill lean hamburger
patties until well-cooked. Next place the patties on whole grain all
natural hamburger buns. You can serve the burgers with a large tossed
salad as well as a side of steamed green beans. Follow this easy meal
with a serving of fresh fruit for dessert. This meal can be on your
table in less than half an hour and involves all healthy foods.
Grilling
or baking lean meats, fish or chicken does not take to long to prepare.
Tossing a salad of fresh greens and vegetables can easily be done while
the meat is cooking. Alternatively you can round out the meals by using
fresh or frozen vegetables. For added variety to your meals you can
try using different healthy foods that you haven't tasted before. Check
the produce section of your local grocer which is stocked with a whole
range of healthy foods including exotic fruits and vegetables. A good
number produce sections offer recipes and tips to show how to prepare
fruits and vegetables that you may not be familiar with. This is a
great way to expose your children to a variety of healthy foods. Of
course, you can experiment with many different fresh herbs that are also
available in the produce sections that you can try to add different
tastes to your meals.
You can prepare healthy foods on a regular
basis to prepare fast nutritious meals. Healthy foods can also be used
in more exotic recipes when you have the time. Healthy foods can also be
prepared ahead of time and frozen for later use. You can be assured
that when you prepare your own frozen foods, you know that they are not
full of artificial additives and preservatives. Encourage children to
get involve in the preparation of the healthy foods, thus creating a
time when each can share about their day. Eating healthy foods do not
have to cost you time or money, and they are certainly a better option
for you.
