CELEBRITY STYLE : CANNES DAY 1 BOLLYWOOD BELLES ON THE RED CARPET

Gone are the days when Ashwariya Rai single handedly wowed the crowds with her mesmerizing eastern beauty. A new brigade of Bollywood Belles is all set to take on the Globe by storm and the Red Carpet at Cannes is a testament of that. This year, four Indian leading ladies graced the carpet on Day 1.

Vidiya Balan joins the Cannes jury panel for the 66th Cannes Film Festival. She wore a Sabiyasachi number which was clearly one of the designer's less extravagant creations. Why she chose this particular number, we'll never know. Other judges include renowned names like Nicole Kidman and Steven Spielberg.

Freida Pinto, who is now a regular on Hollywood Red Carpet attended the Premiere of Great Gatsby in a Bright Pink Gucci dress. While everyone seems to be raving about her look, honestly I found her make up quite dull and the over all look quite boring and almost predictable. Mallika Sherawat was a total Yawn too... I don't know what she was doing there to begin with... But then there was Sonam Kapoor, the Loreal Brand Ambassador and by far my favourite Bollywood Fashionista. Not only does she ease into almost any style, the girl has now been turning heads at Cannes for a few years running. Clearly she enjoys fashion and it shows!!

If the online press is anything to go by, once again she's done it. Dressed in an Anamika Khanna Saree, the actress had everyone's attention with a big bold 'Rekha-esque' nose ring. Show stopping accessories with a shopping stopping outfit. Love it or Hate it Day 1, the Belle of the Ball for her bold style choices was clearly Sonam Kapoor. Keeping a close eye on her in the days to come. Stay tuned!!

Kate Moss is my eternal Girl Crush. The woman could wear a card board box and make it look like the next big thing. Therefore, going through the upcoming June magazine covers, it was only natural for me to stop right at the British Vogue. Other than the rounded pointy finger nails which are en vogue (no pun intended, and yes I also don't really like this trend all that much) the statement eye liner immediately caught my attention. Personally I can never quite crack it, but then I'm waiting for Pink 255's youtube tutorials - I know they'll help. In the meantime, enjoy the various ways to rock this hot revived trend.

SOMEWHAT DAILY DIARY : The FIVE Unspoken Rules of Fashion.

With the PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week way behind us... I'd like to take a bit of your time to share some hush hush unspoken rules of Fashion. I am no expert on Fashion... I'd say I'm more of an observer and reporter rather than a critic. But yes, This is my blog and I write what I feel is right and the Fashion Week experience from me personally was amazing. Exhausting but amazing.

Four days may not be a lot of time to understand the phenomenon that the Fashion Industry is but if there is a crash course that does exist... it is the Fashion Week. Models, Designers, Media, Publicity, Press, Fans... you name it. Everything under one roof in its best and worst possible form.

And without further ado, I present to you, the FIVE rules of Fashion.

1. THE BIG DESIGNERS MUST GET STANDING OVATIONS.
The definition of Big however is 'Old' - The longer you've been in the industry, no matter how average, aged or over the hill... If you've survived you deserve a standing ovation.

Say you're an established designer who does a done to death theme 'in a new light' the 'new light' being... that instead of taking inspiration from an ethnic motif you pretty much paste it all over your collection. Its nothing that the world hasn't seen before but here is what you did right. 'You worked with local artisans' & 'you kept it real' (read: I didn't take inspiration from it, I just reproduced it). Now slap that with a cheap bollywood soundtrack. The result?? As the collection ends the crowd stand up, roaring and applauding. The journos couldn't get enough... The blogger tweets shoot through the roof. And its cool.

2. FASHION IS ENTERTAINMENT.
Presentation no doubt is a very important part of the show. But clearly with the Pakistani crowd you need to take it a notch up. Essentially, for people who are there to 'see' fashion shows for entertainment rather than business, you need to 'very simply put' entertain them. As a consequence, shows that use bollywood numbers and jhatkas and dishum dishum are immediately a crowd favorite.

3. CONNECTIONS ARE EVERYTHING.
I guess this is universal... perhaps applies to any industry, anywhere. Before I go on I must slap a big fat disclaimer here. I am by no means criticizing the designers. I personally think they showed great potential. But here's the thing... If you know a few prominent fashion journos as your family friends etc chances are you'll get a showcase in Sunday Magazine, be raved about in Express Tribune and Socialites will flaunt your accessories as they walk the red carpet basically you'll just have it easier than the others. The point is some will be remembered thanks to gracious friends while others will be forgotten. AND if you're really lucky the serious journos in the front row will get up, wave, and even scream out how proud they are of you as you take the final bow.

4. QUIRK IS COOL.
This is perhaps the oddest parallel to draw, but in the fashion industry you have Mullas. Well not literally, but you know... like in religion the easiest thing to do is grow a beard and pull your shalwar up, the easiest thing to do being a fashion designer is up the quirk factor. Of course, how else would you show your insane creativity (clearly not through the collection).

5. SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE.
If you've attended a few fashion weeks especially in Lahore, you'll know how it all ends. There will be confetti guns, perhaps fireworks (which practically burnt my hair this time around) A dozen hot men who will walk down the ramp shirtless or with shirts... doesn't matter. Everyone will stand up applaud at the job well done which might I add it is because it is a mean feat to pull off all that's been pulled off in the last four days. Managing the music, the media, the models, the designers, the shows, the crowd, the sponsors... you name it. It has all been pulled off once again and for all my insights (read: whining), if I can look forward to it... I am sure the world is too.

With punk glam being the theme for the Met Ball 2013, The stars embraced the theme to the best of their ability and while there were still some non conformist pretty princesses floating around the montage below shows images of the A listers who caught out eye for truly living the theme.

I've been so immersed in Fashion recently thanks to the PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week that I almost missed my delicious 'Thoughts for Food' posts.

Today however, while sitting in the office around lunch time all I could think of was Rocket and Tomatoes and a refreshing Salad. Pity I never got my hands on one... I did manage to compile a collage of gorgeous images which are perhaps the next best thing to actually having a big bowl in front of me.

I guess I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said that Wardah Saleem's collection for PFDC Sunsilk Pakistan Fashion week was the Most FUN collection to be presented. Her take on the crazy doodle print had me wanting pieces from almost every look she presented... The collections from #PSFW have now started showing on Red Carpets, with Humaima wearing Elan just last week at the Launch of S4 in Pakistan.

Today its top model Rabiya in Wardah Saleem. I love that she's swapped the print pants on the catwalk for black tights as it really brings out the print in the dress, but the little orange hobo is so last century and the dress looks a bit big for the girl. As for the friend, I wish she'd done some mixing too... While I love love love the boyfriend Jacket, for a book launch I would have paired it probably with some killer skinny Jeans or maybe just dropped the jacket and gone with the Bright yellow shirt and the print pants.

Just a few days short of elections, the fashion fraternity has made it clear who they're supporting. Right from when Maheen Kardar Ali revealed MK Nation's IK Kurtas at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week, it seems that the design houses have found a bolder voice.

Exactly one week after the showing of Khateeja Shah's much talked about and celebrated Pret Collection, 'An Ode to the Nightingale', Humaima Malick steps on the Samsung Galaxy S4 Blue Carpet in a 'straight off the catwalk' look. Personally, I wish her hair was less fussy... It would have really elongated her neck and brought out the shoulder embellishment but hey who's complaining.

This third global trend shouting out to us is a Pop of Neon Colours. As the world welcomes the 80s back, the Pakistani designers were no less daring in playing with Florescent, Neons and Bright Hues. Show after show, we saw the designers take on these bold looks and interpret them in their own way.

These added with the Monochromes and Jumpsuits that we spoke about earlier, the Pakistani designers did put on a fairly impressive show. And while hints of genius at times were few and far between (Sania Maskatiya being one of them), the global trends were well explored throughout the collections.

When you're new to the game and aren't quite trained to see things in a certain way, your opinion varies from the hoard in more than one ways... Pretty much what I have been feeling reading fellow bloggers and journalists who I had the pleasure of meeting at the PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week.

Having attended the last two Fashion Weeks as a 'Corporate Guest', most of my observations will perhaps reflect a subconscious comparison to my experience then and now and while the critique will follow in this article eventually, I must commend PFDC and Sunsilk for their consistency and hard work.

Any fan or critic will not hesitate to admit that pulling of a show of this scale is no walk in the park. And then to get 33 designers and textile houses under one roof for a period of 4 days without any major faux pas! Kudos ~ PFDC, HSY... Job well done. I personally loved the little hints of National Pride flowing through the shows with the National Anthem, Hasan Shehryar's Speech... Nothing like a dose of Patriotism to keep me hooked.

Any fan or critic will not hesitate to admit that pulling of a show of this scale is no walk in the park. And then to get 33 designers and textile houses under one roof for a period of 4 days without any major faux pas! Kudos.

Anyway, having said all this... I would like to share a few 'observations' of a layman in this article, in hope that they could prove somewhat constructive in the years to come.

CROWD FLOW & MANAGEMENT.

While I would commend the bouncers on doing a fairly decent job of keeping the 'crowd' under control, I unfortunately cannot extend the same courtesy to whoever was responsible for planning the crowd flow for the shows.

It was just unfortunate that one would need to be pushed & shoved at three different check points to the entry of the hall. Starting with the main hall entrance where you had to queue outside, to the second entrance post red carpet and then finally onto the ramp area. It was chaos through and through on each day especially the last when I don't know why but it seemed as if extra invites had been printed and floated.

By the time I got to the hall on Day 4 (post the initial wave of pushing and shoving), the reserved seats had been taken by some sorely rude women who insisted they were there first. In a hall where there were at least a 100 people over capacity, one got to experience the best of Lahori thudas and mukkas.

Honestly, I found the 'Apna card Hawa mein show kerein' a bit offensive. But I can see the poor bouncers had no other choice... Nor was the 'Ladies ko jaaney dein' any more pleasant when you had to push past a mob of boys to get into the hall. Yikes!

SEATING PLAN.

Bloggers are not huge in Pakistan as yet, so it may seem whiney if I speak of the seats we got at the shows, but well for the lack of a better word, we did have nuisance value... The #PSFW Hashtag was super trending during the shows thanks to over enthusiastic social media buffs and unfortunately the fact that there were internet issues followed by bad angles made for hazy blurry instagram feeds and delayed tweets.

Personally, my seats as a guest have previously been better :) When I was doing nothing but uselessly occupying a front row seat for entertainment.

PR & MEDIA RELATIONS.

The one thing there is no whining about is the role of the PR Agencies. All three Catalyst PR, Latitude CRS and Lotus Pakistan seemed to be on top of their game. Having interacted more with Catalyst and Lotus, I have to say I was more than impressed with the timely press packs, the personalized welcomes and well generally the effort that was being made.

Being a fairly new blogger, it was quite pleasant to be recognized and known by name and face. The Media Passes were well handled, the crew was super polite and patient and pleasantly firm where needed. I'd like to give a special shout out to Nighat from Catalyst and Zubair from Lotus for being on top of their game and handling our customized queries in addition to the regular Fashion Week management.

TIME MANAGEMENT.

I think many a things I have whined about on top including seat management and crowd control were a direct consequence of that. Please please PLEASE, try being more disciplined about time... The euphoria of the shows apart, I believe it would reflect terribly on the foreign press and buyers given that we locals are quite accustomed to being 'Fashionably Late'.

TREND REPORT : #PSFW Monochrome Madness at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week.

It's always heartening to see the local fashion designers keeping with the international fashion trends. If you'd recall, right at the start of Spring we had reported and lurved the Monochromes and Accessories! At the PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week, designers played with this trend in every possible silhouette. From very Eastern to Modern, from short lengths to long. Hopefully soon as the Fashion Week matures and more buyers descend, the event will move back to presenting the collections a Season in advance as done globally. For now, I'm just smiling at all the Monochrome options that will be available in the local stores soon.

One thing was clear at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week, Jumpsuits are here to stay! Big Design Houses and New Emerging Talent all showcased their take on this little trend that I have recently found myself falling for. An easy breezy solution for almost all your wardrobe woes, clearly there is a jumpsuit for every possible occasion in life.

Fashion Feature : Bright Young Thing, Mahgul for Nasreen Shaikh

Nothing excites me more than Pret a Porter! So when Nasreen Sheikh, the Veteran designer announced her Ready to Wear line 'Mahgul for Nasreen Sheikh' it almost immediately clicked. Nasreen herself has now been a class couturier for over 2 decades and her granddaughter Mahgul's debut collection appears after 6 years of apprenticeship at the design house!

Mahgul's collection is all set to be showcased in the emerging designers category. The 'Archive' Collection draws inspiration from old photographs and weaves them into modern wearable pieces. What we do know of the collection right now is that it is Monochromatic (Spot on Trend!!). Mahgul herself is a fine artist so I'm dying to see how she translates that into her clothes. So far, so good!

While we didn't get a lot of photo content on the collection, the mood boards look quite promising. I'm sure you'll be hearing more about Mahgul's collection as the PFDC & Sunsilk 6th Pakistan Fashion Week starts on the 26th April 2013.

HAPPENINGS : Fashion Pakistan Week, Day 2 Recap.

I have to say, after the disappointing start to Fashion Pakistan Week, I was almost lazy covering Day 2. (Also owing to the fact that the Press Pack by LotusPR I raved about in my last post for Day 1... Never really came for Day 2 lol). Anyway, What FPW lacked greatly in Day 1 was redeemed on Day 2. Almost as if the two veterans, Sana Safinaz & Deepak Perwani took it upon themselves to make up for all that lacked in Day 1.

What can I say it was Love & Love.

Loved the Tribal/African/Safari hints running through the Sana Safinaz Presentation...

Deepak went on to remind us why we love him so. Bold Frida Kahlo meets Dolce & Gabbana presentation was perhaps my personal favourite of the day.

As Fashion Pakistan Week ended somewhat disappointingly primarily owing to the lack lustre presentations by the designers (Kudos Fashion Pakistan for persevering, I'm sure it'll get better and better in the coming years), all eyes are on Pakistan Fashion Design Council to pull off a spectacular show on 26th of April in Lahore. Something tells me we won't be disappointed...

HAPPENINGS : Fashion Pakistan Week, Day 1 Recap.

Since one should always start with the good, I have to say I was utterly delighted to receive a nicely drafted PR package from Lotus PR last night. Being in Lahore, while I wasn't able to attend FPW myself, the package gave a great insight into what was going on so, Kudos team Lotus. Thank you for keeping us faraway bloggers connected.

Now onto business, Perhaps it is my unfamiliarity with the Karachi Fashion Scene but the designer lineup for the first day seemed like a mixed bag. The lineup included House of Maheen followed by DeepaknFahad (DnF), Zari Faisal, Orient, Aamir Baig, Mona Imran and Ayesha Hasan respectively. After the break, the show resumed with Ahsan Nazir leading the proceedings, followed by Emraan Rajput, Aamna Aqeel, Faiza Saqlain and Baani D.

One thing that personally I found quite pleasantly surprising was that you can practically shop the ramp as soon as the designs hit it. Yeap, Labels E-Store has collaborated with the designers to make the designs available as soon as they go on the catwalk. Normally, the designs on the runways don't hit the stores for at least 6 months (ordering, production, lead time blah blah blah) so while I guess this is a consequence of the nascent stage Pakistan Fashion is, you won't find me complaining.

What I can tell from the pictures... the top designer for the day was Aamir Baig with his stripes. He seemed to be the only designer with a well thought out and executed theme and while clearly he does have some ground to cover still (the ill fitted shorts, the over accessorized umbrellas), he seemed to be on the right track.

Beyond this Amna Aqueel had some gorgeous decadent hints which I loved (image below courtesy Amara at www.Pink255.com) and The House of Maheen stood out more for their styling more than the clothes themselves...

The rest? Well perhaps I haven't seen enough to comment but barring a Gota Work Jacket by Ayesha Hasan, it seemed all a-yawn!

This segment will be featuring Brands Showcased at the PFDC High Street Store. These include: MK Nation, Coco by Zara Shahjahan, Adnan Pardesi for Working Woman & Kayseria Pret. AND... it doesn't stop here. Not forgetting the very madness we call the Lawn Fabric, two days of Designer Textile shows are also part of this years event.
