A scary red eyed Frank Tovey gets us underway this time, with FG's 4th single, then a B-side track from The Monochrome Set - deftly bypassing the A-side "The Jet Set Junta" where it must be said that the A-side isn't one of their best, though it was late on in the piece and I feel things were really winding down for 'em by that stage anyway.

Then it's Hert's finest The McTells from their Truffaut 303 ep, then a Sydney band called The Lonely Hearts, the 3rd 7" release on Waterfront Records outa Sydney, followed by Barney & Johnny going through the motions and a bonus 7" from TV 21 that came with some versions of their single "Snakes & Ladders".

Speaking of someone not being at their finest I'd have to lump this 7" from The Gist in that category, lacking the same spark as "This Is Love" & 'Love At First Sight", both of which we've featured before.

The EBTG song being from the other side of a 3-tracker, "Night & Day" being the main track, then we have good old Coops, in league with Mr Hannett and the Invisible Girls, a cutdown/remix of a track from 'Snap Crackle & Bop" and ending up with Do Re Mi and the single of the 2nd version of "Man Overboard"

Drifting away from the all Aussie vibe this week, though As Clear As Day were one of the great roster of bands on Rampant. After which we have the original Comsat Angels ( well before the later US/Howlett version ), the 3rd single from Jasmine Minks, Ye Olde Moz & Co, Ye Olde Weller & Co, a very Martin Hannett sounding Magazine, some Japan from a double pack 7 ( where I guess the "real" single is Cantonese Boy ), the UK release of Modern Girl, credited only to "James Freud", scandalously no credit given to the Radio Stars ( or Berlin as they had to change their name to in the UK ), and rounding it out with the 3rd Raw Herbs single and some latter day soft-as-marshmallows Housemartins.

Speaking of James Freud, here's a great account of his time spent in the UK with Gary Numan - it's all there, the caravan, the cups of tea, the farting...a very funny read.

#89 - need some obscure early 80's Aussie tracks??

Then you're definitely in the right place !

Let me start by pointing out that single today by The The is NOT by the latter Matt Johnson UK outing, the band here today is the Sydney band, kicking around the inner city at the time, when young Matt was a mere slip of lad, a twinkle in the eye of his old Burning Blue Soul megaphone. "Living In Darlinghurst" a grinding rock tale of life in the dark reaches of urban life ( somehow managing to get a cheap dig in at French's in Darlinghurst among other things ).

We start with a track engineered by Clive Shakespeare ( he of ex-Sherbert fame ), by Trans 262, who if memory serves me correctly started life as ME 262, but with the advent of good ol' MEO 245 they changed their name, the reason given "to avoid confusion". So, um ...er...perhaps making a tacit statement that the punters of the time were perhaps too dumb to pick the difference...???...dunno...

Following hot on their heels is the highly produced ( yet strangely infectious - even 31 years later ) single by Dallimore - featuring Newcastle legend ( Newcastle, NSW that is, not the Alan Shearer territory ) John Dallimore, a former Zoot man.

The another legend - totes legend - Peter Dawkins - in the producer's chair for Sydney band Ves 8, one of their 2 singles ( yes the other one "Ritz Rock" is somewhere around the house ). By the way, speaking of Peter Dawkins, this website outlines Peter's book "The Ice Cream Boy", an autobiography and an accompanying CD "For Pete's Sake", a benefit CD, the proceeds of which aid Peter in costs for his ongoing treatment for Parkinson's, a more than worthy cause given Peter's great contribution to the Oz music scene.

A couple of songs today from the Result Records label, The Eighty-Eights and The Jukes, those bands one half of the entire stable of the label - The Motivators and Colin Stead being the other releases on this short lived Polygram Sydney imprint. I have all the other singles, which will show up one day eventually, which I hope is good news ( ?? !!?? ).

A couple of Sandgropers too ( um, that's people from Perth ), a totally indie effort from The Dugites from 1979 and The Stockings, featuring Bernie Lynch - later of Euroglider's fame ( in earlier Stockings days travelling under the moniker "Rip Torn" ).

Sydney band Tigers ( another oddly catchy thang ) and Brisbane's Mr Meaner are also part of it all today...

as they say in the classics - get it into ya - and enjoy :)

Back again, starting with a US promo 7" of Iris by Split Enz ( from the album "Waiata" aka "Corroboree" depending how you know it ), then Sydney Band the Tablewaiters ( produced by Spencer Lee - as is the later Outline track ). After that it's Magazine's first single, the 2nd single by Au Pairs - in fact the b-side of 'Diet", "It's Obvious" being an early version of song that was on their later 'Playing With A Different Sex" album.

Then it's a Sydney band "Free Kicks" and their one and only single ( to my knowledge ), and I have to admit the "little grey cells" are failing me in the memory dept. on this band, all I can recall is they're from Sydney and I bought the record approximately 80-81. Feel free to let me know anything you may know/remember about the band !

After that it's Sandie and Moz's mates, Ignatius and his mates, the dudes from Heaven 17, Sydney band Outline's 3rd ( and final ) single, and a Side 2 track from a 4 song Ep by The Wonder Stuff.

Rushent that is, who sadly left us earlier this year, one of the two great "Martin" Producers of the 80's ( the other being Hannett ).

Bit of a shame then that my copy of Love Action is on particularly crappy Aussie vinyl - ie from a period when some of the record companies in Australia were using the thinnest cheapest vinyl they could source.

We start today with Spy v.Spy, and you might be interested to know they are sharing all their albums on their own website - here.

Other than that, it's our usual random collection today - randomness the only way that fate could possibly conceive The Seekers followed by Rockmelons...though in my head I've always had Ray Rockmelon down as a closet Seeker's fan ;}

Bill Nelson I'm sure you know, then it's an all Aussie feast ala Sydney band The Eyes, Perth's The Marigolds, Mr Kelly should be familiar ( as is the very J.Camilleri sounding production ), some Warumpis, a b-side for the Gobs ( the a-side "Cut it Out" isn't exactly their finest work ) and finally Ye Olde Kiddes.

After a long break I realised I've still got hundreds of 7-inch records just "lying around" on the floor - like it was way back on Post#1 - so I figured, waaaay time to blog all the rest that I never got around to, so here we go :)

We kick off with a UK release of Jo Jo Zep & the Falcons, which was blogged earlier on #10, but the UK version it is today ( ever so slightly different mastering ), then Melbourne's Serious Young Insects featuring Peter Farnan ( he of later fame in Boom Crash Opera ), a bside to "Way Behind Me" by The Primitives, followed by the dearly departed James Freud, another Melbourne band Wrecked Jets on Au-Go-Go ( a label featured often here ),then the first Allniters single, some Reels, Stars ( single/title cut from the Land Of Fortune album ), another b-side for the Clash ( other side of Clampdown ), and lastly latter-day Creation ala Pacific.

#83 - "The Rescued 12 Inches Vol 1"

Introducing a new concept today - "The Rescued 12 Inches"....for many many years I had a great deal of my records stored "off site" - in other words not in my house, there were just too many to have in one house and cart around with me when I moved house etc etc. The ones stored elsewhere were all my albums/12 inch singles. Unfortuantely there was an accident in the roof of where they were stored and over 90% of these records got totally waterlogged in recent big rain storms we had in Sydney and ruined beyond use. I lost over 500+ records !!! Yes gone forever and not retrievable.

I managed to save about 150-200 though, so it's not all bad news.

What's gone to that big turntable heaven is the sky is stylistically pretty much similar to the kind of releases that have featured here as 7 inches.

Hence it's time for the "Rescued 12 Inches" -

So today it's 10 songs from the hearty survivors who made it through the carnage

Ok all that explained - we kick off with The Pastels, obviously the a-side/main track, followed by the Weddoes from the 12 of "Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now". Then it's a track from side 2 of the original Lazy 12/1st version of "Thru The Flowers" by The Primitives, some McCarthy from the 12 of "Should The Bible Be Banned ?".

After that it's some David Westlake ( teaming up with some Triffids ) on his so-called "solo mini album" ( post The Servants ), the Choo Choo Train omnibusy type Subway 12, then my old Sydney faves The Lighhouse Keepers second release a 12 called "The Exploding Lighthouse Keepers" - also featuring a much better track "Springtime" but sadly that has a jump/scratch, but it's been on a few of those Aussie comps of the era so not so hard to hear..

An Aussie version of The Railway Children's "Reunion Wilderness" album which featured extra tracks to the UK version, followed by those likeable Irish lads who really do love Penelope, with one of the 4 songs on their ep.

Wrapping it all up with The Wolfhounds and the A-side of that particular 12, it was a toss up between "Cruelty" and "I See You" from side 2...

ok, the good thing is these records still exist in my collection so especially..please enjoy !!!! -

ps my scanner is still wobbly - ie the Hey Paulette 12 isn't two-tones of white....yet that's how it shows up via my scanner..

#82 - some more flexis

A couple of Sha La La flexis today, so forgive the noticeable quality, especially The Siddeleys, though Baby Lemonade is nice a fuzzy and maybe gains from the flexi surface...dunno...

I had to do some wonder surgery on The Fizzbombs as there was a scratch - which was causing it to get stuck on a note - interesting loop but by the wonders of a sneaky edit I got around that :) No tricks needed for the Rote Kapelle ( the connection with The Fizzbombs being shared members, also shared members of Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes ).

And yeah, seems to be a run of Strawberry Story and Echo & the Bunnymen lately...whateva treva no complaints I'm guessing...

#81 - Greetings West Sussex !!

Starting today with The Friendly Fires circa 1986 from West Sussex....apparentely there's a new artist who pinched the name ( confusing everybody - it should be a floggable offence, taking on as your band name one that's already been used ). Anyhow The Friendly Fires we have here list their address on the back - 12 The Chase, Furnace Green, Crawley, West Sussex - so here's the Google Earth link...

Apologies to whoever lives there now but hey it's on the back of the record !!

After that we go Strawberry Story, some Talulah then a flexi from The Haywains ( "The Surfin Towbridge ep " ) ( one of 2 "surf based" songs on today's mix ). Sadly my technical abilities in cleaning up flexis are a bit lacking - crackles and pops on normal vinyl I have a nice little app ( Click Repair ) but removing the all encompassing surface noise of a flexi is a bit out of my league. Could be an issue having had a sneak peak in the pile and seen there's some more flexi's comin thru soon ( Sha La La anyone ? ?? ).

Then I'd forgotten what a great single "Beat Girl" is !! Woohoo.

A second appearance by The Lighthouse Keepers with "Gargoyle", they'd previously popped up with this song on #11, but I think you should know that I have more than 2 copies of this single. I have...wait for it....6 copies !! This is cos they all had individual handmade and coloured sleeves, so I wanted as many as possible. I originally had 7 but gave one away as a swap ( can't remember what for exactly ). Great song though and well worth another listen.

After that it's young Roddy in the driver's seat, a b-side for The Hit Parade, Scottish Surf ala 53rd & 3rd records with The Beat Poets and rounding it out with The Darling Buds ( by the time they'd lost their edge ).

#80 - Back again :)

I've been incredibly incredibly non-attentive to my blogs lately, sadly....but all that is about to change, especially here :) Stay tuned for "special" adventures here in the coming weeks - all will be revealed....

The first This Poison! single ( on The Wedding Present's label Reception Recs ) gets us underway today, it was a toss up between the a & the b sides as they're both crackers !!

Other things - my apologies for the quality of 'Blind Vision" - it's pressed on very shitey quality clear vinyl, only one level up from a bad flexi, in fact some of my flexis sound better. Oh and I chose the b-side of Josef K's "It's Kinda Funny" single cos I always foud the a-side slow and boring...sure I still bought but was never big on the song !!

And another case of 2 copies of the same single in the guise of "Thru The Flowers", as it's already appeared in the early early days of this blog, so..er..yeah 2 copies of that one. 3 if you include the original version !!

It's the second appearance of the Gob's "Right Here" today, because I have 2 copies of the record, one a UK Double 7 pack as featured way way waaaay back on #7, and the one today is the vanilla Aussie one single pack version.

And sadly I had to turn the Echo 7" over because the A-side "The Puppet" had not one but 2 yukky ukky mukky scratches...sadly....not that 'Do It Clean" is bollocks - far from it !

Nothing much more out of the ordinary....other than the fact I found the Hunnas single a bit boring...I'm sad to admit....just showing you can bash a few gas cylinders and thus get flown off to a studio where Can recorded but you can't always come back happy...one of life's little lessons...be sure, be very sure of yourself if you're bashing cylinders in a band...

And then good old Anne Clark...always certain to depress you !! By the way the b-side of "Hope Road" makes me laugh - it's called "Poem Without Words"...which is a weird concept for a poet like Anne Clark....not that it's silent, it's an instrumental, just seems like a copout for a poet !!

Oh yeah..nearly forget - BAD SAMPLING WARNING !! BAD SAMPLING WARNING !! The start of Colourbox is sooooooo naff......

anyway enjoy it - and "do it" as Van McCoy suggests :)

If you're in Sydney I will be on the radio this Thursday from 12 midday-1pm on FBI ( 94.5 FM) on a show called "Out of The Box" talking about music, specifically my "collection" and how music fits into my life - the program description is

"Each week we delve into someone's (anyone's) record collection and talk about the music they love, the life they lead and how the two interact'"

If you're out of Sydney and still keen, FBI streams online. The difficulty I'm having is keeping it down to a dull roar/only an hour ( i need at least 7 ) but I'll just see what happens when I get there !!

Pastel I mean....but that's how the Flexi sounds...

I guess it's sorta Pre-Creation Creation ! ie kicking off today with The Pastels from the "split flexi" with Laughing Apple - featuring of course a certain Mr Alan McGee - The Pastels getting a re-issue on Rough Trade afterwards..

Then some "Progressive Office Pools" in fact the b-side of the Models 2nd outing "Owe You Nothing", I always preferred "Progressive Office Pools" because it was more of a Duffield inspired keyboard weird romp akin to AlphaBravoCharlieDeltaEchoFoxtrotGolf as opposed to the prototype-punky-powerpop-post-Teenage Romance vibe of "Owe You Nothing"...so today you have to suffer that particular little prejudice of mine.

2 outings from Green Records - it's doyen of course a certain Mr Roger Grierson - with singles by The New Christs, the first I believe from that project by a certain Mr Rob Younger and another single by Naughty Rhthyms - one of the bands of the sub-ska scene of inner city Sydney in the early 80's, ie in the Allniters type sub set.

( Rushent of course at the controls with the Leaguers )

and Bring Phillip's 7", brought to you with all mid-80's the Sydney art college sensibilities they could manage !!

Kicking off with the debut from Australian Crawl, a Brian Eno produced Carmel single and a Melbourne 3 piece Two Way Garden - the first ever release on the Au-Go-Go label outa Melbourne.

Then we hear The Chameleons ( who despite claims otherwise i do know who they are ), after which Richard Clapton has a turn producing INXS and John Robie 'remixes' Barney and the lads ( apparentely with a bland cover because Factory designer Peter Saville hated the song ). Then the Mighty Lemon Drops spend up big on studio time and come up with something overproduced, then it's off to a studio of vastly smaller nature - M Squared in Sydney - with Patrick Gibson twiddling knobs on the desk for Sydney band 3 Muskteers, and even helping out on backing vocals ( what a guy ! ).

Then Mssrs Bridie and Phillips et al with somethin' which I always wondered what the f**k they were ever on about on this single....nothing's changed...which then leads us into an old chestnut from The Swingers with our old friend David Tickle producin'

A new concept/blog of mine ( and my mate Paul )...related very much to this blog and my other main blog Humans Beware.

It's called The Feskive 40 !!

Huh ?? Feskive ?? Don't you mean...Festive ? Well yes...but not really.

A radio show based on John Peel's annual Festive Fifty, complications of copyright law resulting in the use of the word Feskive. That and a strange Australian sense of humour.

Basically a "Top 40" chart, but with the twist that songs are randomly chosen live to air from a barrel.

Without wanting to give away the chart - you'll have to listen for that, our first show recorded freshly yesterday, features music by The Chesterfields, House Of Love, The Manhattan Love Suicides, Galaxie 500, Komon, Days, The Clean, Fad Gadget, Revolving Paint Dream, Moscow Olympics, Look Blue Go Purple, and many more - however many more make up a total of 40.

From that list you can see we brought some damn juicy indie pop in with us and lots of it came out of the barrel.

First up it's b-side of China Crisis as we already had the a-side "African & White" much earlier in the piece ( way back on #28 ), even though it's remix of the a-side. Also a b-side to the Spencer Spencer single ( he was a Melbornian and although the a-side actually featured Al Webb & Andrew Picouleau of The Metronomes I found it a tad boring if the truth be known ! ). Old Sydney faves Just A Drummer are back for their 3rd run here as well.

Abou the only other thing worth pointing out is that New Order thing is a "promo edit" of Theives Like Us.

Bler bler ..luv ist bler....we've all copped a bit of bler in our time...so has Vicky it seems

Chin up Vick at least you've got a My Bloody Valentine haircut - nowt wrong with that !

Bob's first outa the blocks today....on the House Of Teeth label...the boys winding up towards the end...so much so you can just hear their hair falling out....must be that bler vibe again.

Even As We Speak follow, even if they did get some dodgy production advice ( check out the bollocks sampling work near the end ), our friend Vicky then appears and then a clippity cloppy jaunty falsetto-esque number from James, with just a hint of Tenpole Tudor swirling in the air ( what were they thinking ?? ).

"Tears Fa" afterwards with some nifty xylophone work, then a b-side to what's not one of 14 Iced Bears best efforts ( the a-side is "World I Love" ) and a three peice Sydney band "Living With Robert", a quality little 3 tracker.

Surly Ed's up after that ( with a blues harp stuck in his gob and a brass section on the boil ), then another one of the zillion great Waterfront bands The Honeys and lastly our old mate Mr Camilleri rocks ups with a VM cover.
