Rings Rings such beautiful things

I am really into rings at the moment, I never used to be at all, in fact until fairly recently I hardly ever worn them. I love vintage jewellery, unusual pieces, thrift store finds and here are a couple of my personal favourites....most of which have been given to me or found, which makes them that little bit more interesting.

I always think sometimes the most subtle accessory can be what makes you individual. I want to have a huge array of rings and bracelets and necklaces from which to choose. Here are a few rings that caught my eye - and I want them!

A Thomas Sabo ring which I found on a pretty cool website called Fabulous Collection which sells jewellery and has it's own blog.

These fine pieces can all be found at my fave online boutique jewellery store, which I wish I could shop at on a monthly basis if my empty wallet allowed. Kabiri is a great marketplace for up and coming jewellery designers to showcase and sell there items. A lot of their pieces are one-off making them really special.

Vintage clothing and the Female Dandy

I am so excited to hear about the Vintage Goodwood festival taking place from 13-15th August this year. It is the first of what will hopefully be a successful annual event that celebrates British music and fashion from the 1940's through to the 1980's. They promise a mesmerising display of catwalk shows, hands-on-creative workshops, and a vintage hair Salon, as well as DJ's, Bands, vintage collectors and sellers of vintage clothing and vinyl as well as contemporary brands inspired by Britain’s rich creative and cultural heritage. Besides the main themes being Fashion and Music they say there is also going to be lots of great Food, Art, Film and design. I am really hoping to attend this festival which is taking place on the beautiful Sussex coast - a quintessential British getaway

So with the vintage feel in my mind it made me think about the Female Dandy which was a popular look in the 1920's and now is starting to show on the runways of today. A slight move on from the military trend to more structured suits and waistcoats. You can see it also the Dandy style in such films like Coco before Chanel where masculine meets a definite femininity due to the great tailoring that accentuates the female form, which is what being Dandy is all about , it's less androgynous and far more female. A British classic style, that I love.

So before I forget Shop Girl from the blog Sugar and Spice wrote a really interesting article about online Fashion Stores charging for delivery, she asked a few fellow bloggers for their opinion on this and what they thought about High Street shops charging, something that personally puts me off when the delivery is quite high and adds a lot to the total price. Being one of the bloggers asked for her opinion I was super happy when she linked me into the post, as it's a great blog that is updated daily and is filled with interesting and inspiring fashion ideas, so when you have time check it out.
So back to the female dandy theme, my number one icon of the moment and a person who I think represents the cross over of masculine but still very feminine is Janelle Monae, whose style and music I am loving at the moment. Check out this video tightrope for amazing tuxedo dancing.

Chloe Winter-Fall Preview, Photos and Share the love

Here are some sneak preview pictures of the upcoming Chloe Fall-Winter 2010 collection and advertising campaign. I am loving the retro 1970's feel. Looks like the high-waisted trousers are making another appearance in the coming season, aswell as soft touches of denim and leather....hmmm excited to the see the rest.

So I have just got some film back from the labs, there is always something exciting about getting negatives back and seeing if there is anything good, I find that whole process is lost with digital. These are shot on one of my favourite "toy" plastic camera's - a Vivitar slim and wide. It cost me a whole £5 to buy but I love the slightly warped effect if gives images. So here is my "Part 1 summer fun in Cardiff".

So keeping on the local beat, my day was brightened up by going to have tea and coffee at my favourite local quirky giftshop/tea room WonderStuff, which never fails to please. A combination of cosy surroundings and daily fresh baked cakes served on vintage soda bar inspired plates makes my eyes smile. I have also become a fan huge of Qype, which is a great "find it and share it" user generated site. Basically you the reader write reviews about places in your city, I always find "real reviews" of restaurants, bars and shops are much better and far more unbiased than press released ones. Anyway I was quite excited to share my thoughts on the WonderStuff coffeeshop on Qype - I love to share my experiences with others who live near me. Also whats even better not is Qype is also a free iphone app, so now when I am out and about in Cardiff or London and looking for a chic and friendly bar to go to I have user reviews at my fingertips.....ahhhh isn't technology great (when it works that is :). Just thought I'd spread the love heehee

Paints, Laura Ashley and I blame Coco

So finally i'm getting round to decorating the back room in the house *yey*. I am not the quickest person when it comes to deciding colours and curtains and what not - only because I am fussy and I fear the idea of being boring, knowing that there is a world of choices out there. Anyway to my delight Laura Ashley in Cardiff was having a sale, and I simply love love love there household stuff, so I was more than delighted to have picked up some blue gingham curtains and Bluebell paint. Bluebell is not a very good description of the paint colour, infact it sounds alittle sickly sweet, which it is not, it's a sort of pale but warm powder blue, but I did nearly buy some paint simply based on the names - Pale Parisian Blue or Duck Egg. Also I learnt something new, as I didn't realise that Laura Ashley was born in Wales (even though I live in Wales, I was born in South Africa so I have an excuse for not knowing), her designs remind me of quintessential floral British countryside’s and would be a label Charlotte from Sex in the City would wear. Her polka dot patterns and beautiful wallpaper have made her a firm favourite in classic British fashion. I came across this photoshoot from the 90's and I just love those maxi dresses.

So every now and then someone catches my eye, style wise and this week is Coco Sumner from I blame Coco (she also happens to be Stings daughter) and although I am not a huge fan of her music I do like her casual "I just got out of bed" look. At the tender age of 19 she has a great sense of style and I like her attitude towards the industry as she appears to not really care too much about what people say. She makes plan t-shirts look like the new must have and is in my mind a Vice Magazine poster girl for the current youth.

Tipi Native Fashion Love

So as I said in the last blog post I have just finished up with my job this week - whoo hoo, which means more time to concentrate on things I love, such as photography and writing. Yesterday I did some promo shoots for a new eco Laundromat/Cafe in Bristol called "The Clean Bean", it's really cool and eco friendly and I hope they do well - will post some edited pictures soon. So my boyfriend and I came back from our Tipi adventure on the West Coast in Wales at a place called Larkhill Tipi's. What a beautiful places owned by beautiful people, was so nice to be out in the fresh air again, cooking on open fires, really a wonderful experience. It made me think of Native American inspired fashion and come across a fashion shoot for French Glamour - I want all those clothes and walk around in a permanent state of peace and love and Tipi living ethos.

One person though I cannot fail to mention when I think of Tipi's and American Indian's is Juliette from Juliette and the Licks. She is such a fashion fierce individual who is never afraid to shock - which I just what I like, people who take risks. Also I love the song Hot Kiss...hope she tours the UK soon.

Street and Cycle Fashion

So news news news...anyway I have been away for the past few days on a little holiday in a Tipi, yes you did hear that right - a Tipi - and it was great. Also I have finally quit my job (Big cheer) which means more blogging and photography time, so I am very excited about that. This is just a short little post about my current favourites - I am in love with this blog called Cycle Chic - fashion on bikes from Copenhagen and other parts of the world, if you have time check this blog out!. How I do wish that the UK was as cycle friendly as cities in europe, like Amsterdam. Also how I wish for a real vintage bike so I can ride around and feel like I am in the film 500 days of summer.

So being from South Africa originally and from one of the most colourful cities in the world - Cape Town, and with all the craze of the football happening at the moment, I thought I would shed some light on one of my favourite street fashion photographers who simply captures they current creativity in the street trends out there at the moment. Nontsikelelo Veleko really is an amazing photographer and shows of how beautiful and colour the people and country really is.

Cafe, Cars and Modern life

Well I cannot believe how long it's been since my last post (about a week and a half!) too long I know but it's mainly been because of my time being occupied by going to view and purchase a car - which is far more time consuming than one thinks and the other by getting enrolled for my final year of my photographic studies - once again far more time consuming than needs be. Anyway between this all, last weekend I discovered a new espresso bar in Cardiff city centre - now I am usually oppose any "Mall or Store" cafes, but the one in John Lewis has such great views above the streets below and interesting triangle design with floor to ceiling windows I have to give the thumbs up and plus they make really good coffee and tasty meals like the tomato bruschetta I demolished and the goats cheese and beetroot salad - yum yum!

So anyway back to the car dilemma, I love love love vintage/retro cars. I used to have a 1982 mini which never let me down, always started first time and who I miss dearly. Before that, when I was living in Cape Town I drove a 1978 beetle - what a fun car to drive and I hey I don't mind the noise it makes. So it's disappointing that I had to settle for a Nissan Sunny - although hopefully this is just a temporary car until the funds allow another mini. Oh and how I do wish I could drive through the streets of Paris in a fiat 500 or a convertible with the wind in my hair listening to dream french tunes and flowers in my hair...hmmm.But it made me think of Europe and it's cars and the fashion at the time and I am totally inspired by these images.

I love the last photo, it's so stylistic and everything seems to have its place.
Another one of my favourite everyday clothing companies, that also happens to be having a sale (oh lucky me) is Ben Sherman. I love their Mod inspired clothing and reminds me of my mini driving days so well. I want and need the following items!

So I am getting some photos developed soon and lots more little tales and adventures and such to post - yey, free time is a virtue :)

Seaside Music Love

First of all what a busy week (hence lack of posts), I love bank holidays and long weekends and getting out the city. I have been to many small towns and villages throughout the UK but it was a first proper stop at the costal town of Tenby...and what a beautiful, sea-gull infested and burnt bodies filled day. Also I am bringing back Tune in Thursday as I haven’t done a music post in a while even though I do prefer to look to musicians who rock an individual style for inspiration ( as oppose to main-stream celebs). But to the point I am in love with this song at the moment...The Rambling Man by Laura Marling. It's not like a catchy Pop tune but it's just beautiful lyrics sung by a beautifully talented girl. It reminds me of nostalgia and looking back on the good times you have had...festivals, summer days relaxing with a book and mellow low-key nights where not much has to be said. Also she has a great casual style, and I am liking her newly dyed brown hair.

So on Monday I celebrated the bank holiday with a true British adventure...to the seaside...the welsh seaside to be exact. Well sunny days are few and far between here, so I was not going to let a day go, so we hopped onto the train for a relaxing 2hr trip...well it was relaxing for me but perhaps my other half didn't see it that way as he was nursing a hangover and sleep deprivation (no sympathy from me, may I add). Well it was packed with all the elements needed for such a day out....steak and ale pie (not mine!), coffee in a pottery cafe, soda and ice-cream, sea and sand....and a knitted cake...you got to love that :) Also in love with the hipstamatic application on the iphone.

Outfit post and Acne clothing love

So this is my boyfriends first ever blog outfit post....and it's simply because, well for one he loves clothes, very crisp and clean clothes (unlike me who like's abit of the worn in look and ragged edges) and because he was so happy with his recent Nudie Jeans purchase (is really cool denim label that I wish made clothes for women!!) and what was best is they are made out of organic denim, I'm a secret greeny heehee. I thought it was a good opportunity to take a photo :) So anyway I went for ANOTHER casual look (I never seem to make too much of an effort of late, perhaps because it still seems not quite summer but neither spring....not sure where I stand!

Festival fashion love

So as we are approaching the British summer that always means one thing to me...festivals!!! I love the idea of festivals because it's a time people can at least pretend they are free spirited, if only for a few days, and then back to the day jobs. This time last summer I was living in a Van, wild camping in Cornwall with three Canadians (and I'm not making it up)...I loved living in sandals with the sand between my feet and good times and good music, which is what most festivals aim for. I also love how we still look back on the original Woodstock and early Glastonbury’s and people still pull out the florals and maxi dresses now, as if nothing changed. Although something that did change is we have more now...you can be hippy or rocky, indie or eccentric. I also love to look back at old photos of Woodstock and just close my eyes and wish I had grown up during that time. My I also add...bring back some mellow tie-dye (not super vibrant colours...more like faded mellow)

Yey so it finally and I mean finally starting to feel like summer. I really am going to cherish every warm sunny day in the UK. So I just felt like wearing something casual but individual today...I wanted to feel like I was in LA...but not glam LA...more like downtown.

Postcards, creativity and pretty little things

So I have been abit quiet...but busy too, with lots of updates coming and some BIG news that will be revealed soon :)
So I have joined this online community called Postcrossing - the postcard crossing project, where the goal of the project is to allow people to receive postcards from all around the world, I find it intriguing and exciting and a great excuse to make postcards. Anyway I have just made and sent my first to a girl in a city in the Russian Federation, I wonder how long it will take to get there? Anyway I got my cute little papers out and this is what I made, I wonder if I should make some and put them on etsy? Any suggestions?

I hope my Russian friend likes my postcard I made her :)

On another not of some crazy creativity I came across this slightly bizarre t-shirt on farfetch, I am not quite sure if I like it or not but do think on the right person it would be pretty cool (someone with a really strong sense of personal style and confidence). It's by the designer Makin Jan Ma and the t-shirt features large multi-coloured bunting details that hangs from triangular alternating black and white panels. It's also not cheap coming in at £179

I know this is a few years past the date...but to me Soko is still one of my personal style icons and I am quite sad that she has stuck to her guns and has still quite the music industry. Ok so her music was never high-end produced but that was the charm of it, a garage sounding french duo who's lead singer is as cute as a button but not with a mouth or lyrics to match. I simple love her quirky individual style and I hope in a way she comes back and is never really forgotten.

Records and retro love

So I went to Bristol the other day, it's nice to just have a change of city, or a change from Cardiff once in a while. It happened to be during that week when it actually felt like the UK was heading into summer, and I am hoping that wasn't our summer, either way it was wonderful to sit by the harbour with some Pear cider and people watch. There are some great shops in Bristol, including the Cath Kidston store, which has some really lovely summer and beach bags. But my favourite store has to be MOTEL, which is a great store full of new and vintage items, sown little DIY projects, shoes, bags and homely things...I want them all! Anyway that’s where I got this long sleeved stripy cardigan with anchor buttons. Another online purchase that I have made lately is my scrabble "word" necklace that made me smile when I saw it, I simple had to get it, it's from a great little company called Fallen Saint . Also my record collection is growing, slowly, but surely...I am never going to get tired of analogue.

So I am not a huge fan of J-Lo, her acting skills are not exactly Oscar worthy and her songs don't really offer me that much in terms of depth, although she has changed the way some people think about there rear end, as in bigger is better, which I do give her praise for. Anyway I am in love with this photoshoot of Mrs J for Marie Claire shot by Marc Hom, I simply think they are stunning and could be view as any high-end fashion shoot. I also happen to be in love with the Pringle Jacket and Fendi shoes she is wearing in the first photo.

Bags of change, green fashion and song

SO I have been looking for a little Shopping Tote for summer, to go to the beach or carry the odd thing or just to have a change from a more formal bag. I looked at some sweet Cath Kidston bags and an Obey bag, but they seemed alittle bit too flimsy, and would break quite easily. Really next year what I should do is by some fabric and whip one up as they are not hard to make, but when I came across this bag the over the weekend when I was out down Cardiff Bay I just had to get it. It's so strong and sturdy and I love the design and it also happens to be made out of Organic cotton and your not paying a huge price for it and the little coconut buttons on each side are very cute. Converse and Mac chillin at Cardiff Bay

Oooh Ooooh Oooh another great little website clothing company I came across the other day which is meeting two of my favourite things, books and clothes. It's called "Out of Print Clothing" and there mission is to celebrate the worlds greatest stories through fashion, a brilliant idea if you ask me. Just like Bags of Change they are also pretty eco friendly, as with every t-shirt bought they donate a book to a community in Africa where they have little access to books. Here are a few of my favourites

So one last thing that sort of round up my weekend/Bank holiday was going to watch Silver Sixties with my mother. It was a stage show with original singers from the sixties doing there hits with an amazing backing band. Now not all of it was for me and I wish I could of taken more photos but because of rules and blah blah blah you cannot take any images when inside. Anyway one of my favourite songs, which is also on the soundtrack of a great film - Darjeeling Limited, is Peter Starstedts "where do you go to my lovely". The lyrics are just so beautiful, especially the first verse

Summer needs and the little things

So I am loving the summer collection of Monsoon and Accessorize....so many things I want. I am really hoping for at least some beach weather this year, I know people keep saying the UK deserve a good year - but they really do. I am really into free-flowing clothes at the moment, with a touch of Moroccan/hippy feel to it. I think it's also time to get a little jumpsuit (as seen below). I have also been looking for a little satchel bag for ages, I would prefer to find a vintage 2nd hand one, but I am pretty impressed with this little one from Accessorize and what’s even better is it's only £37. Also you cannot go through this season without a little wedge shoe, and this one just makes me feel at little Rockabilly, which I love :)

Another absolute need, since moving into my new home, is a sowing machine, and I came across this little cute thing on urban outfitters - it's mini and portable and is said to be suitable for all those little DIY projects such as skirt hems and cushion covers - I want and I need!

So it's always a little strange packing up and moving, you realise how much stuff you actually have, it's a great way to de-clutter, but you also have to realise your moving on and all your things are going to have a new home, including you. I came across these photos I took of my old room and I just feel you can tell quite alot about a person just from the small things they own

Oh La La and Nautical Needs

Ahhh another sunny day (believe in Wales this is a rarity and should be savoured) so it's a good excuse to get this little dress out of the closet. I'm pretty lucky this summer to be a fan of both French style and the Nautical look, which I think this dress combines, even the little buttons down the front have anchors on them and the beret suits the outfit. All I need now is to find a really big anchor necklace, anyone know of a good place to find one of those? Also I cannot seem to stop wearing my brogues, I just love the vintage feel they give me when I wear them, although I should stop otherwise I will do what I always do with new shoes is destroy them in the first few weeks.

Also my summer His and Her must have are espadrilles....yes I know this is old news....and if I could I would just buy Sperry Boat shoes all the time but Espadrilles also offer a cheaper solution to a wear and throw away at the end summer shoe. Obsessions - quirky icons, teacups and my film camera

SO my obsessions of late are spring flowers, anything vintage with the colour brown and teacups and sodabars....aswell as my current favourite fashion icon Zooey Deschanel, who just seems to look to cool in anything she wears. Besides being a talent actress she is also part of the quirky two piece band She and Him. At the moment I just cannot seem to get enough of her style (as seen below)

So lately I have been going to this cute and super cheap coffee shop that has all the things a tucked away retroesque coffeeshop should have...queue teapots shaped as giant muffins and an array of home-made cakes and floral curtains. Also I just cannot get enough of my little trusty pentax Ashi at the moment....I really do prefer it over my digital SLR which I have to say I don't use very much....also a friend happened to pick up a little Kodak medium format box camera in mint condition which I am looking forward to using over the summer.

Happy to be Back!!!

So lots has happened since Xmas and I have been unable to keep up with my blog, but I'm back and back for good. Firstly I moved in with my wonderful boyfriend in the New Year and it took us till March to get the internet connected (everything takes longer than you think - to get a BT line then sky to connect internet...argh!) Also there is big big news which will very quickly come apparent. But otherwise everything is good and I am looking forward to the summer and I love love love the boho/festival look which is coming back (again :).
I have also been quite busy with my photography and I am nearly finished my professional photographic website and also shot a wedding over a month ago which was an experience, also two of my photo's where selected to be part of the Mail Art exhibition in Glasgow during Jan this year, aswell as there exhibition magazine. If your local to Cardiff or South Wales there is also a charity fashion show happening this weekend at the Cardiff International pool on Sat 24th April, the ticket prices are £10 but with labels such as Hudson and Hudson, Perfect Lingerie and Newport Fashion students showcasing their work, it will be worth it. Just a day for taking photo's and Ugly Sweaters

So I am getting geared up to start my 365 day project next year - where you take a photo everyday. I love film though - so it may be abit harder, but it's a good motivation to get out and about and take some snaps. I have just bought this knitted jumper, which I practically live in now...it's so nice and warm. Also I bought a pair of jeggings/pull on jeans (not in this pic) but whoever invented those is a genious - I am in love with them!!!

Also I am totally in love with ugly jumpers!!! The uglier the better haha, I mean what would christmas be without novelty sweaters anyway?? So after looking on the net, I came up with some of my favourite jumpers, I also saw a great printed horse jumper in topshop the other day - which I need to get!!! British Fashion Awards

So late night was the British Fashion Awards - wish I could have gone!!! It also happened to be the 25th anniversary and was supported by Swarvoski, so it must of been an insanely amazing night. Some of my fav's came out on top with Burberry's Christopher Bailey win Designer of the year.
The other winners were

Emerging Talent Award for Accessories - Holly Fulton

Emerging Talent Award for Ready-to-wear - Peter Pilotto

Designer Brand - Burberry

Model - Georgia Jagger - seen as the model who contributed most to the International scene this year

Accessory Designer - Katie Hillier

Menswear Designer - Kim Jones for Dunhill

BFC Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design - John Galliano

He's been recongnised as a designer who throughout his career has made an impact

in the industry on an international level.

London 25 - Kate Moss

An individual who embodies the spirit of London

Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator - Grace Coddington

So I am very happy to share that I will be part of a group exhibition taking place in Glasgow next month at the Long Gallery in the Tron Theater. Hopefully I will get the chance to go up for the preview but it's a few hours from where I live. Here is the offical poster for the event and my work that will be on show :)

Let it Rain

So this is going to be a busy weekend, but hopefully full of wonderful happenings. Saturday night I am going to big dinner with friends, lot's of wine and food and tipsy ramblings, it should be fun....but what to wear?? I bought a cute dress a while back that I have never worn out because I was not happy about the length, so I've pinned it up and tucked it in and an all round better fit :)

Sunday with be full of fashion frolics with the Wales Fashion Showcase, which I am really looking forward to and a full write up will follow. Ahhh how winter has suddenly come upon me...it's been creeping slowly and then wham it's here....dark mornings and nights and sudden need for thick winter coats (my favourite) but I could not help but wear this skirt and tight combo today, just made me walk with a spring in my step
