However, after scrapping the bottom of the VHS RENTAL barrel I can tell you that they're are a lot worse. I still like the close-cropped pic of a wide-eyed female victim here.

Turn the box over and you'll see that the advertising on this one doesn't lie! A real rarity when it came to horror movie posters and art. Gotta love the design and logo of the Midnight Video Horror releases from the 80's. The Girly Show Banner is a great mix next to the ridiculously straight forward illustration. So, I thought I would post some more photos from my old horror video collection.
Haven't had much feedback or comments on these posts. But judging by the youtube videos I've seen there are a ton of people new and old collecting these horror big box videos.

Well, here is one of my favorite MIDNIGHT VIDEO covers. A big box release of Herschell Gordon Lewis's GORE GORE GIRLS. I'll post the front cover after this.
Thought the spine design on this one really works. Love the Skeleton in Top Hat Icon for the spine. This is a really hard one to find... especially in this condition.
Most of these big box cover art where chopped up and trimmed down by video stores to fit blockbuster style rental cases.

I'm not a big fan of Gordon Lewis films by any means. I'm way more into thriller horror than chop'em up grindhouse gore splatter. But if that's what you are into. This is a must see!Tons of gore and freaky camera work. Total Z-grade filmmaking here.

I'll come back with some more choice big box horror video cover art in the next couple of days. Glad to see others are appreciating it as much as I do.

Although Lucio Fulci is better known in the US for horror films this Mogul video was my first introduction to both Fulci and the Italian crime action genre. Fulci directed Contraband a year before THE BEYOND (seven doors of death )
This prolific director took on just about every film genre popular in Italy during the 70's including sex comedies like La Pretora with Edwige Fenech and also the giallo films such as A Lizard in a Woman's Skin. Each of these very different films still bare the directors distinct mark . Contraband brought the horror film type violence and gore to the already seemingly brutal crime genre. Fulci later took on Italian Westerns, Science Fiction, and Sword and Sorcery films as well.

Gemser's real-life lover Gabrielle Tinti also stars along with Italian B-Movie Actresses Pilar Velazquez and Paola Senatore. Directed by Jose Maria Forque ( beyond erotica)
"Fury" works best in some of its more lighter comedic and sexy moments. Especially the "upskirt" scenes ( see screen shots) The action adventure scenes are forgettable.

Here is another great example of the ridiculous cover illustration that was used to market foreign films by Mogul video in the US. How much more outlandish could you be than to market a film by titling the video : "Rape". Well, I am sure it worked to get your attention at the video store. However, if rape was the subject matter for a film you were looking for you won't find it in this video. Desnuda Inquietud is a rather bizarre and convoluted b-movie that deals with too many subplots.
Plot Synopsis: Erotic Supernatural Drama - A mysterious woman is able to tap into a past life as an Indian - The locals of a small town fear the woman as a witch. One foreigner develops a relationship with her. He soon dies in a mysterious death. She then believes herself to be cursed. - The dead man's friend seek her out in order to find out the truth behind his death. - They are instead faced with the supernatural occurrences and bizarre relationships that surround the beautiful but isolated woman. Her father abuses her and the two men attempt to protect her. Deals with issues of incest. While the film is called rape - This is not the main subject matter of the film. - Definite must see performance by Nadiuska - otherwise rather forgettable curiosity of 80's video sleaze.

"Striptease" (1976) was released in the US as "Insanity" by Mogul Video during the mid 80's. Mogul released many Euro B-Movies in English Language Dubbed Versions. Most where Italian films from the mid-70's. These Mogul videos where often un-cut versions with great picture quality. Mogul videos were marketed with garish video covers, usually illustrated in gaudy colors with exploitive titles that misrepresented the content of the film. In this case both the film title and the video title are misleading.

Review:

Corinne Clery stars in the inappropriately titled film "Striptease". Not that there is not an ample amount of stripping from the "Story of O" actress. But the title suggests a plot about a tawdry stripper or perhaps a hot nightclub filled with salacious stories. What we have instead is a take off of of Jean Luc Godard's "Contempt". Terence Stamp plays an eccentric producer who hires a disillusioned director to save his disastrous film project. Clery - the stripper, is his muse, the inspiration for his over ambitious and pretentious film project.

Similar to "Contempt" the small group of characters spend there time together in a remote island estate. Here they gather to drink and spout philosophy. Stamp is willing to risk everything for his new project. He becomes infatuated with Clery as an ex actress turned stripper with a mysterious past. He sees her life story as a way to get back into film making. His lover (Silvia) becomes jealous of the attention to the film and the real life subject. Stamp confides to his lover that he must make himself fall in love with the stripper in order to really be able to create his film. They both agree to play along with a charade that will make Clery fall in love with him. Stamp's old friend (George) is brought on to direct. The director is sauced half the time and when sober shows little interest in the project other then the money it provides him. He does however, manage to warn Clery that the film maker is a cold hearted user who plans to destroy her in order to make his fictional character a reality. The slow moving story of affluent euro-types is thankfully interrupted about every 5 mins. with a stage scene of Clery dancing nude.

The story takes place in only two places, either the nightclub or the estate. There are only 4 main characters. So you wouldn't think that such a small set-up would require narration. But, yes indeed the Clery subjects us to her inner most thoughts via narration. A sexploitation version of Contempt sounds like a great idea. To bad this isn't it. We are supposed to believe Stamp as a devilish manipulator but the audience never really feels any real threat to the Clery's character.

Notes: Director Germain Lorente also directed Tres Mujeres de Hoy with Charo Lopez. Another film concerning cabaret show girls. View link to see my post of the MAGO us video release of this film. The police attempt to put the pieces of the serial polygamist together with the help of a high-priced call girl. Africa Pratt portrays the sister of the bride who committed suicide. She is intent on using her influential clientele to help capture the man who ruined her sisters life.
Maria Perschy is the lonely flower shop owner who continues to make flower arrangements for the polygamists new victims. They in turn have a normal love affair in the making. However, the Polygamist always backs off and disappears out of town.A sophisticated thriller with brilliant characters well portrayed by Maria Perschy and Manuel Summers.

Miguel Angel Landa plays a handsome young man who is just released from prison. He goes to a popular bordello / nightspot called El Pez Que Fuma ( the smoking fish) located in the outskirts of Caracas. The female owner La Garza hires the ex-con as a handyman. Soon, they enter into a romantic relationship. Who ever manages to sustain her love will inherit the club. However, he soon finds that he has two other competitors for the affections of La Garza. The club becomes a pressure cooker that symbolizes the power struggles and hierarchy of Venezuelan society. The film making style is supremely realistic and on par with the slice of life reality scenes of Martin Scorsese films and European New Wave cinema of the 60's.

Reina Zanahoria is an extremely obscure film from a rather well-known director.
Gonzalo Suarez was born in Spain in 1934. He studied Philosophy and Letters in Madrid (1951). He became an accomplished and well recognized playwright, director, artist, and author. American movie-goers will probably know him best from his 1989 film Rowing In the Wind which he wrote and directed. Spanish Exploitation fans will recognize this director from the infamous 1976 film "BEATRIZ" starring Nadiuska, Carmen Sevilla, and Jorge Rivero. This prolific director is still working in Spain today.
Reina Zanahoria is probably not considered one of his greatest accomplishments. It is not very similar to much of his later work. A favorable but light-hearted satire with out a lot going for it. Ursula is an eccentric and wealthy American known as Queen of the Carrots who arrives in Spain to conduct international trade. Jacineto a shy book salesman is set up to seduce her in order to secure a lucrative publicity contract. The energetic and lavish woman puts Jacineto to the test in a series of wild games of courtship.

Rather tame erotic comedy much less obscure than other Azucena Hernandez films. Still provides some great scenes with Azucena, However by 1982 she has lost some of her youthful appeal. Another erotic comedy where a married man tries to get rid of his wife while having an affair with a much younger woman. Light-hearted marriage comedy and sexual hi-jinx.
This one still not on DVD last time I checked.

Directed by: Javier Aguirre who is still a prominent film maker in Spain. He directed some well know erotic films like Los Pecados de Mama another Mago US Release. Better known to videophiles for his Dracula feature Count Dracula's Great Love (1972).
Javier Aguirre directed over 80 films from the 60's to the present. However, his best work was done in the 80's. The US video label, "Video Latino" put out a fair share of his films. Most of which are still very hard to find and not available on DVD. I hope to be posting "Video Latino" vhs releases next month. Cheers! - sideshowvideo

Mago Video Corp. also released three other films starring this Spanish beauty contest winner. "Adulterio Nacional" "El Consenso"
and Las Eroticas Vacaciones De Stella. Bacanal en Directo is the most obscure as well as the most outrageous. Azucena Hernandez also appeared in some Paul Naschy films: El Carnaval de las Beastias ( human beasts) and Retorno del Hombre Lobo ( night of the werewolf aka the craving ). Both of which were released by " All Seasons Entertainment" in the US in Dubbed English versions. However, her roles in these Paul Nashcy horror flicks were much smaller. .Bacanal en Directo showcases her real "talent" as a leading lady opposite: Fernando Martin, Victor Petit, Carla Celis ,Fabian Conde, and Teresa Herrera.

Bacanal en Directo is a somewhat surreal erotic melodrama concerning a young couple who experiment in occult sex prior to their wedding day.
