You did it! SFCU donates $1,000 to local children’s hospitals

Members and staff of SFCU opened up their hearts and wallets last month to raise $1,000 for two area hospitals: the Albany Medical Center Children’s Hospital and the Golisano Children’s Hospital at Upstate Medical, Syracuse.

The funds will be used to support these vital facilities that bring world-class pediatric care to our region, family, and friends. A huge thank you to everyone who donated!

Our fundraising drive was part of the Credit Unions for Kids program, raising money across the nation for local children’s hospitals. Since 1996, the Credit Union for Kids program has generated an astonishing $100 million for children’s hospitals and helped over 17 million kids. People helping people… your credit union at work!

SFCU to open new branch in Delhi, NY

We are pleased to announce the construction of a new SFCU branch, in Delhi, capital of Delaware County. This brand-new facility will offer our full suite of financial services and also include a drive-thru and 24-hour ATM.

Our new branch will be located on State Route 10, next to the E-Commerce Center and close to the University of Delhi main campus and off-campus residences. It brings the total number of SFCU branches to nine.

Construction begins later this month, and will be complete by early spring 2013.

We are excited to be "branching out" into Delhi, and look forward to seeing you there!

SFCU speaks to hundreds of local students about finances beyond high school

SFCU recently presented to a rapt audience at the annual Chenango County School Counselors Association College Day, at the YMCA in Norwich.

Representatives from our credit union spoke to around 600 juniors who were attending the forum to learn about life beyond high school.

Myria Allen, Norwich Service Representative and Elise M. Glassett, Marketing Specialist, were in attendance to offer guidance and long-term strategies for financing a college education, and to give out a few tips on how to make the transition from high school student to bona fide member of the work force.

The teens also learned about the many services SFCU has to offer college students – from savings accounts, checking accounts, and Student VISA cards, to car loans and the “cash back” option when using their Debit card at a grocery store.

We were happy to see so many students stopping by our booth to find out more!

A day in the life: Local teens learn what it’s like to work at SFCU

A group of juniors and seniors from Bainbridge-Guilford Central School recently visited SFCU’s headquarters in Sidney for a tour of the facility and an informational session about banking, accounting, and life at our credit union.

The students were attending a course that exposes high school kids to the work environment and gives them expectations of life beyond school.

Three managers from SFCU gave a presentation describing the specifics of their job, the work place, human resources, and how accounting fits into our world. Following a quick question and answer session, the kids left with some of our all-too-popular SFCU giveaways.

The students had a blast, and the staff enjoyed meeting potential future colleagues…?!

Great job, everyone -- and it’s good to know that our future is in such excellent hands!

Candy for a cause

The Oneida Street branch of SFCU has been helping local Boy Scouts meet their fundraising goals and promote community awareness of scouting.

Boy Scout Troop #23 spent St. Patrick's Day at our Oneida Street location in Oneonta, where SFCU members bought 200 candy bars in a three-hour time frame! Since 70 percent of the proceeds stay local, we're proud to be supporting the area's youngsters and helping them learn about income and becoming self reliant.

So if you have a sweet tooth, “scout out” the Oneida Street branch this Thursday, March 29th for more candy sales, and also on Saturday, March 31st, when the Girl Scouts will be out in force, selling their delicious cookies. Caramel deLites for everyone!!

SFCU Polar Bear Plunge team raises over $1,000 for local kids in need

This year's Polar Bear Plunge at Goodyear Lake raised a record-breaking $100,625!

SFCU Staffers Taking Polar Bear Plunge at Goodyear Lake

Eleven women from Sidney Federal Credit Union will be jumping into the frozen waters of Goodyear Lake in Portlandville this weekend at the 17th annual fundraiser.

The women will be part of a 300-strong group of jumpers who are taking the plunge through six inches of ice in order to raise money for local charities.

Last year's event, one of the coldest ever, raised over $80,000. The event organizers hope to be able to top that number this year.

The event is raising money for a group of local children with illnesses; plus several local organizations, including Catskill Area Hospice, the Milford Fire Department, and the Portlandville Methodist Church.

At SFCU we are proud to be part of the local community, and proud of our staffers for making a difference to those in need.

People helping people: SFCU secures financial support for those who need it most

Sidney Federal Credit Union is very proud to announce that we helped a grand total of 77 credit union members obtain flood relief grants this year!

Following a summer of storms, flooding, and general havoc, we worked with the New York Credit Union Foundation to identify and apply for special grants. The financial assistance we secured will enable members of Sidney Federal Credit Union – our friends, neighbors, and community members – to rebuild their homes, businesses, and lives after the devastation of Hurricane Irene, Tropical Storm Lee, and the subsequent flooding.

Funding for these disaster relief grants was donated by credit unions and individuals within the credit union community across New York state – a perfect example of the credit union philosophy of “people helping people”.

And, in addition to knowing that our credit union members can continue with their lives, it is wonderful to see our local towns and communities being rebuilt!

All SFCU Branches Open, Now Offering Flood Relief Loans

Our hometown was hit hard by the September flood and has been declared a federal disaster area.

Residents, officials, volunteers, and community members are working tremendously hard to clean up, dry out, and stay positive!

Sidney Federal Credit Union has introduced two special flood relief programs to help local businesses and individuals impacted by this flood. We are offering a “Flood Relief Loan” with a special 1% interest rate, and a “Skip-a-Payment” program that allows members to skip up to two payments without penalty. These services are designed to offer the maximum assistance to our members who have experienced damage or loss due to the flood. For more information, please click here.

Here are some tips to help make sure you enjoy the warm months without risking your financial future.

Going on vacation? Prepare an emergency wallet with a bit of cash, a spare credit card and extra ID, in case you lose your wallet.
Use credit cards instead of cash whenever possible. They offer more security than cash, because you can stop payments if the card is stolen, and have greater resources if you’re mischarged for something. Apply for an SFCU Visa Platinum Card right now, if you'd like.
Use direct deposit and online banking so your mailbox doesn’t fill up with bills while you’re away.

We’re looking forward to Saturday and the SFCU Hometown Day Parade.

The 23rd annual parade promises to be a terrific event. It will feature Sidney Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year C. H. Landers Inc. Funeral Chapel as the Parade Grand Marshals.

You’ll also see many local organizations, high school marching bands, floats, vehicles, motorcycles, fire departments, local businesses and much more!

The Sidney Federal Credit Union employees unit consists of employees and their children with a focus on more than 65 different organizations they volunteer for in the communities they serve.
