Apple bloqueando la innovación?

Esta semana en el portal digital de tecnología AllThingsD se publicaron las cartas enviadas por Google y Apple al Comité Judicial del Senado en EEUU en donde las partes justifican individualmente cómo se deben compartir los inventos y a su vez se refuta que el conocimiento por más popular que se haga no se debe "regalar".

La guerra de patentes es "a pain in the ass", "un dolor en el trasero".    Así se refirió el CEO de Apple, Tim Cook al tema referente a la gran pelea que tienen con Google y su división Motorola Mobility y otros proveedores de tecnología y desarrolladores de teléfonos inteligentes. El caso está candente, pues resulta que Google representado por Kent Walker en una carta dirigida al Comité Judicial del Senado, afirma que "algunos inventos" que se encuentran patentados por Apple deberían compartirse públicamente para que otros desarrolladores de tecnologías los usen buscando el beneficio de todos los consumidores, en otras palabras, la perspectiva de Google es que, sin bien es cierto que existen algunas normas esenciales que deben ser patentadas en el comercio, también existen algunas patentes "básicas" que cubren temas de alta popularidad que hoy en día se han convertido en omnipresentes, tal es el caso de la tecnología multitoque o deslizar para desbloquear.

Este argumento, por supuesto, tiene implicaciones enormes para Apple, que ha desarrollado un "tesoro oculto" de lo que podría ser considerado por algunos como la propiedad intelectual alrededor del desarrollo del iPhone y el Ipad. Como era de esperarse, la empresa no tardó en dar a conocer su posición al respecto. En una carta dirigida al Comité Judicial del Senado, el Consejero General de Apple, Bruce Sewell refutó el argumento de Walker y justificó en su escrito: "Que una tecnología patentada se haga muy popular no justifica que sea transformada en un estándar".

La esencia de la carta de Sewell es la siguiente: las tecnologías estandarizadas facilitan la interoperabilidad entre los dispositivos, dándoles la misma funcionalidad básica. Las tecnologías no estandarizadas son las que realmente hacen la diferencia logrando que los equipos sean diferentes, es así como se crea la competencia y se genera innovación en el mercado. Someter a las patentes no estandarizadas a las mismas reglas que aplican a las normas esenciales entorpece la innovación y perjudica a los consumidores.

Sewell en su carta hace referencia al desarrollo del iPhone y su éxito en el mercado, textualmente dice: "Las capacidades de un iPhone son categóricamente diferentes a las de un teléfono convencional, este es el resultado de la capacidad de Apple para innovar en el desarrollo del mercado móvil. Se puede usar un iPhone para tomar fotos, gestionar una hoja de cálculo de finanzas en casa, jugar juegos de video o ejecutar un sinnúmero de otras aplicaciones que no tienen nada que ver con "protocolos estandarizados". Apple gastó miles de millones en investigación y desarrollo para crear el iPhone, además desarrolladores de software independientes se han gastado miles de millones más para crear aplicaciones que se ejecutan en él. El precio de un iPhone refleja el valor de estas tecnologías no estandarizadas, así como el valor del diseño estético del iPhone, que también refleja el inmenso estudio y el desarrollo por parte de Apple, ajeno por completo a las normas."

Hay una gran diferencia entre la tecnología que se hizo popular por haber sido adoptada como un estándar de la industria y la tecnología que se hizo popular porque los consumidores se enamoraron de ella. En el caso de las guerras de patentes de teléfonos inteligentes, la primera hace un teléfono celular y la segunda hace un iPhone. Se trata de una tecnología básica, la otra es la experiencia, convirtiéndose en la diferenciación del producto.

El punto en que Apple hace referencia es que si se elimina la distinción de propiedad intelectual y los estándares comunes no patentados, se quita un incentivo clave: La innovación. Apple gastó miles de millones en investigación y desarrollo para crear el iPhone. Lo que quieren es no gastar ese dinero para crear la competencia del iPhone. Y este es el punto que el director ejecutivo de Apple Tim Cook ha recalcado una y otra vez desde que comenzó la "Guerra de los cien años" contra el iPhone.

Después de escuchar las dos partes se pueden sacar conclusiones que pueden variar de acuerdo a la óptica con que se vean, si bien es cierto, tal y como lo afirma el vocero de Apple, que esa compañía se ha gastado "una fortuna" para hacer las cosas diferentes, el caso del iPhone es el que marca la diferencia, pues cuando salió la primera versión de este teléfono los otros fabricantes estaban lejos de producir algo como lo que Apple lanzó en su momento al mercado.

Algunos expertos afirman que sus competidores se tardaron casi cinco años en lanzar un producto mediamente "parecido" al Smartphone de Apple, esto es lo que hace la diferencia. El argumento de Google es hacer que esas tecnologías esenciales aplicadas por Apple y de las que todos nos "enamoramos" se conviertan ahora en estándares públicos que pueden ser adoptados por cualquier fabricante. Es evidente que Google busca favorecer el desarrollo de su división productora de teléfonos Motorola Mobility, esto realmente puede tener un beneficio para el consumidor ya que ciertas tecnologías dejan de ser exclusivas de una marca para ser estándares de uso público, pero, si esto fuera de esa forma se generan varios cuestionamientos: ¿En dónde queda la propiedad intelectual?, ¿Estamos bloqueando la innovación? Estas y muchas otras preguntas y afirmaciones se generan al respecto. Que sean la ley y las regulaciones las que en últimas encarrilen el futuro del desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías buscando obviamente el beneficio para el consumidor final.

Apple sigue preparando el terreno para la llegada del tan esperado "New iPhone" y pone al alcance del usuario una mejora sustancial en su aún vigente iPad 2, con la incorporación del microprocesador de nueva generación A5 de 32nm pone en la linea un gadget con una autonomía cercana a las 12 horas, esto permitido por el bajo consumo energetico del mencionado microprocesador.

Cabe señalar que el costo de la gama "mas baja" del iPad 2 se encuentra al alcance del usuario promedio con unos resonantes 399 dlls, que al tipo de cambio en pesos mexicanos serán alrededor de $5,200.00, un precio bastante mas asequible que el nuevo bebe de la compañía de la manzana mordida. Con esto Apple pretende acapara aun mas el mercado de las tablets puesto que para el usuario común que no requiere de una resolución excepcional como la del "Nuevo iPad" podrá navegar, leer, distraerse a un bajo costo.

Por si fuera poca la oferta, Apple se ha preocupado por poner en las manos del comprador ya precargado en esta nueva versión del iPad2 el mejorado iOS5 asegurando que la experiencia de usuario no deje nada a desear, ahora si... Bueno, Bonito y Barato el iPad no decepciona.

El nuevo iPad3 tiene el mismo aspecto que su predecesor pero el dispositivo es más rápido, tiene una resolución mayor y una potente cámara. Aun así el producto no está lejos de ser perfecto y en spiegel.de lo han puesto a prueba. Aunque el nuevo iPad es más grande (0,6 mm) y más pesado (50g) que el iPad2, lo que realmente diferencia ambos dispositivos es la pantalla, más brillante, con más contraste y más detallada. La resolución de 2048 x 1536 píxeles es más de lo que tiene cualquier televisor con resolución Full HD. Esto ofrece detalles que la versión anterior hacía desaparecer.

También impresiona que el texto sea mucho más fino y detallado en el iPad3 cuando se aumentan su tamaño. No hay pixelado visible. Lo mismo ocurre con las fotografías, de manera que donde antes iTunes descargaba las fotografías a una resolución adaptada podrán transferirse archivos de imagen de hasta 18megapíxeles sin pérdida de resolución. Para esto existen algunas aplicaciones como Snapseed o Photoshop touch. Aunque de momento sólo iPhoto está optimizado para la pantalla Retina-Display de Apple.

También la cámara en la parte posterior del aparato ha sido mejorada. Aunque las fotos ofrecen sólo 5 migapíxeles, aunque las cinco lentes acopladas de la nueva cámara siguen haciendo fotos bastante aceptables. La cámara frontal no ha sido mejorada y ha conservado la resolución VGA 640 x 480 píxeles.

Uno de los problemas para el nuevo iPad puede resultar la rápida velocidad de descarga que ofrece. En muchos países de Europa, una tarifa plana optimizada para el nuevo iPad con cerca de 50 Mbits a través de HSDPA puede costar más de cincuenta euros al mes y muchas compañías aún no lo pueden ofrecer.

En cuanto al procesador, que ha sido bautizado como A5X, se trata simplemente de una mejora del anterior A5, que se ha convertido en un chip dual. Las promesas de superar al competidor Tegra 3 de nVidia no quedan completamente cumplidas pero para la utilización diaria de la tableta no debería ser apreciable. De forma resumida, el gran aporte del iPad3 es la resolución de la pantalla porque ni siquiera ofrece mayor capacidad de almacenamiento.

Ayer Apple cumplió buena parte de las expectativas al anunciar una herramienta de creación de libros interactivos pensada para textos educativos pero gratuita y abierta a todos los usos. A partir de ahí, iBooks Author se empieza a salir del guión, y no para el gusto de todos.

¿Qué es iBooks Author?

Es una aplicación para Mac OS X Lion, gratuita, que permite crear un libro interactivo a partir de plantillas y con gran sencillez. Permite embeber textos, imágenes, vídeos y modelos 3D, así como crear una navegación rápida y coherente entre ellos. Los que han experimentado con ella están, en su mayoría, encantados.

Una vez creados, los libros pueden exportarse a una variedad de formatos que incluye el nuevo .ibooks. Este formato es una variante de HTML5 que se ha sacado Apple de la manga, esencialmente ePub3 pero con modificaciones no estándar. El resultado tiene mucho que ver con un documento HTML5 complejo, con la diferencia de que en lugar de navegar entre cientos de archivos, el interfaz del iBook (basado en Webkit) navega por el interior del "documento".

Todos los iPads pueden leer el nuevo formato usando la app iBooks 2 (recién anunciada como veremos), y los demás formatos son abiertos... excepto el formato .iba, completamente nuevo y cerrado.

La otra pequeña gran revolución está en el modo de distribución. iBooks Author es gratuita, y Apple permite distribuir libremente los libros creados con ella... siempre que no los cobres. Si los quieres cobrar, tienen que venderse a través de Apple (sección propia del iBooks Store) y hay que firmar un contrato específico con la empresa. Los detalles operativos aún no se conocen pero tiene todo el aspecto de ser una versión light de lo que hacen los desarrolladores para vender en los Stores.

Todo ésto ha provocado una cierta polémica, lo que no esperamos que haga cambiar de opinión a la empresa de la manzana.

Implicaciones

La primera y evidente es que va a bajar mucho el listón para preparar libros interactivos muy cercanos a ePub3. Con Author, y con la facilidad de crear elementos (widgets, de hecho) en HTML5, lo que era un reto y una inversión se convierten en una tarea relativamente sencilla con convenciones estandarizadas. Traducido: va a haber una explosión de estos libros.

La segunda es que Author es gratuito y no hay que ser una editorial para darse de alta y publicar en el iBookstore. Aunque varias están colaborando (y es difícil imaginar un buen libro de texto sin editor), Apple ha dado un paso muy serio hacia la desintermediación.

La tercera es que se han metido en un charco importante con los términos de uso de los productos de Author y con la personalización del formato. Las modificaciones que han hecho sobre ePub3cno son enormes (como se explica en este texto que hemos encontrado gracias a Fran Iglesias), pero son suficientes para hacerlo incompatible con todo lo que hay ahí fuera. Y no parece que tengan ganas de converger con el estándar que el resto de la industria está creando.

La cuarta es que Apple ha hecho una apuesta importante, que de salirle bien puede atragantársele. Si consigue que su nueva plataforma (Author + iBookstore + iBooks 2) se convierta en una referencia capaz de hacer daño a la creación de contenidos para otros formatos y plataformas... se le van a echar encima. Desde ingenierías inversas hasta procesos legales. Eso sí, se habrá comido el mercado educativo, tanto en cuanto a textos como en cuanto a medios para leerlos. Deben de esperar que compense... y no es raro, porque hasta la fecha el iBookstore es un competidor marginal en la venta de libros digitales. Es decir, que todos los demás le dan sopas con hondas por la falta de contenidos.

Otros anuncios importantes

Acompañando el lanzamiento de iBooks Author hubo dos más: el primero era evidentemente la adecuación de la app iBooks para poder tratar los nuevos libros, y también para incluir una sección de textos educativos. Fuera de ésto no incluye grandes novedades.

El segundo tiene bastante miga también: se trata de una app específica para consultar los contenidos de iTunes U, hasta ahora una sección menos conocida del iTunes Store donde se acumulan miles de horas de vídeo y ponencias educativas gratuitas de primer nivel (y de varios niveles más, pero buscando aparecen joyas serias). Esto debería hacer esos contenidos mucho más fáciles de encontrar, y por tanto animar a más universidades y profesores a crearlos.

En resumen, de lo que no cabe duda es de que las novedades hacen el iPad mucho más atractivo para los estudiantes... y quién sabe, quizá hagan más atractivo el estudio en sí. Eso ya depende de los autores.

Chromium se puede convertir en la base para el navegador de todos los dispositivos Android

Esta tarde Google nos ha dado la noticia del día cuando menos nos la esperábamos: Chrome ha aterrizado en Android, y tiene muy buena pinta. Se nota que en Mountain View han estado trabajando en él, y aunque lo hayan lanzado en fase beta todo el mundo está diciendo lo mismo: "Ya es mi navegador por defecto y no creo que me eche atrás". ¿Qué va a pasar con el navegador por defecto de Android a partir de ahora?

Pues tiene todas las papeletas de desaparecer, haciendo que Android se convierta en un sistema operativo sin navegador inicial. Pero en The Verge han contactado con un representante de Google, y éste les ha comunicado que Chromium aplicará todas sus ventajas de ser un navegador 100% libre para que cualquier compañía implemente su propia versión en el sistema Android de sus terminales. Google ya ha hecho su parte, dejando todos los recursos necesarios para ello disponibles.

Ahora que Chrome ha aterrizado en una de las plataformas móviles más usadas, la que debería estar preocupada es Apple. Las versiones de Safari tienen una buena porción del mercado, pero ahora que Chrome utilizará la misma fórmula de escritorio más móvil y teniendo en cuenta su enorme crecimientosólo en la versión de sobremesa, el mercado puede cambiar mucho. Por cierto: en The Verge también confirman que esta versión de Chrome para Android no soportará Flash siguiendo el abandono de la plataforma en los dispositivos móviles por parte de Adobe.

Tras el cierre de MegaUpload, una plataforma para compartir archivos (en su explicacción más simplista), han sido varios los ataques de los integrantes de la red Anonymous. El día de hoy además del video, ha corrido como pólvora la convocatoria de un Marzo Negro.

En facebook el mensaje es:

"Se está gestando una iniciativa por la red en modo de protesta por el cierre unilateral de MEGAUPLOAD por parte del FBI. La iniciativa se llama "MARZO NEGRO" y consiste en que el día 29 de febrero empezará en España una protesta que consiste en que no consumamos (pagando) nada de cine, música, etc. y que continuará (uniéndonos a usuarios a nivel mundial) todo el mes de marzo."

Google en la búsqueda continua por mejorar sus servicios e integrarlos en un mismo lugar para crear un solo ecosistema, ha lanzado una nueva mejora para su potente buscador web, lo han llamado "Searh, Plus Your World" lo que en otras palabras significa que a partir de ahora, el buscador web ya no solo nos arrojará sitios de interés ni los recomendados por nuestros amigos, sino que también será capaz de entender el contenido de la gente y en la manera en que se relacionan. ¿Cómo es posible que logren esto? muy sencillo, gracias a nuestros círculos y al contenido que generan nuestros contactos, para ello Google ha dotado de tres nuevos elementos a su potente buscador las cuales describiremos a continuación:

1. Resultados Personales. La parte medular de las nuevas funciones, ya que a partir de la información y contenido que nuestros amigos y contactos generen en la red social de Google, Google+, podremos ver resultados únicos personalizados para nuestra búsqueda, en otras palabras, el buscador se enriquece con las notas publicadas por nuestros amigos y con las fotos que comparten en Picasa.

2. Perfiles en los resultados. Ahora también podremos encontrar perfiles de personas que sepan del tema que estamos buscando y que por ende nos podría interesar seguir, por ejemplo si buscamos consejos para tomar fotografías en movimiento, lo más probable es que Google nos sugiera algún fotógrafo que haya hablado de esto.

3. Personas y Páginas. Tal y como sucedió con los perfiles, las páginas en Google+ que estén de cierta manera relacionadas con nuestra búsqueda o área de interés serán mostradas de manera diferente para que podamos añadirlas a nuestra red social de una forma rápida y sencilla.

A pesar de que para el usuario estos cambios sin lugar a dudas lo benefician y hacen que su búsqueda sea más integral, personal y rápida, para los demás servicios que muestran contenido en tiempo real como Twitter, este movimiento los perjudica drásticamente y no mantiene una equidad en la "búsqueda", de hecho, la misma Twitter se ha quejado al respecto mediante un comunicado expresando su inconformidad. Por otra parte, mucho se habló de la privacidad de los usuarios con respecto a estas nuevas funciones, pero para alivio de todos, este tema fue bien cubierto por parte de Google dándonos la opción de activar o no estas nuevas funciones.

Cada vez más se nota el poder de Google y la tendencia que están tomando sus acciones, las cuales están enfocadas en darle mucha importancia a Google+ que hoy en día sigue viva pero sin cautivar a sus usuarios. No hay que olvidar que como sucede en todo cambio que Google aplica, éstos surgen efecto paulatinamente, así que puede que tarden unas cuantas semanas para que los veamos en acción.
