Industrial machines and associated equipment such as control panels frequently have receptacles for supplying power to additional equipment, such as electric tools and test gear. NFPA 79 has strict guidelines for such receptacles to provide for operator protection.

For starters, they need to be protected with a UL 943-listed Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) and the supply voltage is limited to a maximum of 120 V. The receptacle itself must have a rated voltage of 125 V and rated current of 15 or 20 A. Typically the receptacles are listed in accordance with UL 498.

Receptacles installed in the machinery field or outside the control panel are potentially exposed to shavings, dust, oil and other contaminants, so must have a cover attached when not in use.

Equipment operating in a harsh industrial environment can get awfully hot, so it should be no surprise that the NFPA has requirements to help reduce the risk of fire.

NFPA 79 has a general requirement for equipment, which is capable of reaching surface temperatures sufficient to cause a fire hazard or have a harmful effect on the enclosure material. In such cases, the equipment must be installed in an enclosure that can withstand such temperatures without fire hazards or harmful effects. It also has to be installed at a sufficient distance from adjacent equipment so as to allow dissipation of heat without creating a hazard, or screened by a material that can withstand the heat emitted by the equipment.

Given that control panels are often used in harsh industrial environments, the NFPA has some strict requirements for the type of enclosures that house the panels, as well as doors and other sorts of openings.

Chapter 11.4 of NFPA 79 requires enclosures be able to withstand any mechanical, electrical and thermal stresses they may encounter during operation. This applies not only to industrial control panel enclosures, but also to field devices, motor enclosures, and even electrical equipment housed in a container.

The same requirements also apply to observation windows, for which either reinforced glass or polycarbonate panes with a minimum thickness of 1⁄8 inch (3 mm) are recommended. In fact, NFPA 79 has an entire range of general requirements, relating to aspects such as fastening holes or openings for cable entries.
