Very recently The Sierra Vintners poured our wines at an appreciation event for the Beale Air Force base. There were many in attendance and the event was great. Toward the end of the event, several service men and women personally thanked us for pouring our wines for them. What a class group, to hear them thanking us, after all THEY do for us.

This reminded me that if ever there is a time of year to show appreciation and gratitude, now is the time. It is also a time to think about the things that are good and meaningful in life.

The Sierra Vintners family of fine wineries wish you very happy holidays!

Published by SierraFoodWineArt Magazine at www.sierraculture.com.

SIERRA VINTNERS IS A CLUSTER of wineries in scenic Nevada County.

They are nestled in the foothills around historic Nevada City and Grass Valley, just north of I-80, between Reno and Sacramento. It's a personal, unhurried wine tasting experience along "roads less traveled."

Nevada County is a rising star in Northern California wine country. The county offers more activities, hotels, B&Bs and restaurants than some of the better known wine regions in the Gold Country, a big draw to summer visitors.

Sierra Vintners are winning more statewide accolades for their wines too. Napa and Sonoma wineries regularly buy their grapes.

Unique Blends from the Sierra Foothills- Avanguardia 2008 Ampio

I was really intrigued when I was approached by Avanguardia Wines, a Sierra Foothills winery, to do a tasting of some of their current releases. Avanguardia specializes in crafting proprietary blends from unusual grape varieties. Around 70% of the grapes they grow (they have 23 varietals) are of Italian origin.

Sierra Vintners Pull it All Together at Nevada City Tasting Event

As a big booster of wines from the Sierra and its Foothills. I was delighted to go to the recent Sierra Vintners event held in Nevada City. Almost twenty wineries from Nevada and Placer County participated. Tasting tables were set up in a number of retail shops, hotels and restaurants – all within a short walk of one another. Brilliant.

Four Winemakers to Know in Nevada County

Thursday, September 15, 2011

By Matt Kettmann, Santa Barbara Independent

California's gold rush built the twin cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City, located just four miles from each other in the rolling, pine-studded foothills of the Western Sierras, about halfway between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. But today, decades after the shiny stuff stopped paying for the quaint towns' Old West facades, there's a new boom floating these Northern California economies: wine. And though its flow rarely makes it too far beyond the large, multicounty growing region collectively known as the Sierra Foothills, the recently rechristened Sierra Vintners association is helping ensure that Nevada County's best bottles get noticed. Here are four spots worth visiting the next time you're anywhere near the area, all family-run operations serving up great juice and even better company.

Lucchesi Vineyards

One of the larger growers in the region, with 20 acres planted in about a dozen varieties, Lucchesi Vineyards is run by Mario and Linda Clough, who got into the wine business nearly 15 years ago. "It was just wild," said Linda of the property before they installed their terraced vineyards. "We didn't know enough to be afraid." In their tasting room on a bustling corner in downtown Grass Valley, Linda welcomes guests with a blend of hometown pride and Texas-raised warmth while pouring everything from viognier and chardonnay to syrah, zinfandel, and port. See lucchesivineyards.com.2007 Cabernet Franc: This stand-out red wine shows off what Sierra Foothills can do, bringing both a typical California fruitiness with more reserved and serious sensations for your lips. $24

Montoliva Vineyard & Winery

Experimentation with different grape varieties is central to the Sierra Foothills experience, but Mark Henry of Montoliva Vineyard already figured out what works. "There are a lot of similarities to the geography of central and southern Italy," he explained of his appointment-only winery and tasting room property in the tiny "town" of Chicago Park, about 10 minutes from Grass Valley. So he's working with a wide range of Italian varietals, from standards like sangiovese to obscurities such as teroldego and negroamaro. "I have a personal preference for Old World wines - earthy, dry, rustic," said Henry. "Geologically speaking, this is the place to do it." And with very few people in the entire state doing the same thing, the former beer-making supply dealer from Seattle finds plenty of freedom. "There are no guidelines," he explained. See montoliva.com.2007 Aglianico: One of the preferred grapes in Roman times, aglianico is a great food wine, with strong enough structure to hold up to beef but a drinkability fitting lighter fare as well. $24

Sierra Starr

Though they boast the oldest zinfandel wines in Nevada County, opened the first tasting room ever in Grass Valley, and two years ago opened an even more impressive tasting room on the main drag, the Sierra Starr crew is most proud of their new winery facility, which is finally open for business. "It's quite a kick, this industry," said patriarch Phil Starr, who runs winemaking with his son, Jack, while his wife, Anne, runs the retail. Phil enjoys making more elegant wines, the kind that, as he explained, "don't just walk up to you and sock you in the face." See sierrastarrwine.com.Jack's Blend Five NV: Every year, Jack Starr blends his favorite barrels from years past for this tasty nonvintage blend of zinfandel, can franc, petite sirah[CQ], viognier, and more. Single-year bottlings should be shaking in their boots. $17

Szabo Vineyards

"I'm a firm believer that great wines come from great fruit," said Alex Szabo, whose eponymous winery offers tastes in a stylish spot on Nevada City's strip. Unlike many of his blend-friendly neighbors, Szabo makes single varietal wines that he believes reflects his European-oriented palate. "I consider myself a purist," explained Szabo, whose Hungarian roots, expertise in five languages, and time spent working around the Eastern Bloc countries honed his wine sense. "I just want to be amongst the best at what I do." See szabovineyards.com.2006 Syrah: Szabo calls this smoky, soy-inflected bottle his "velvet hammer," and it doesn't fail to arrest your senses with a serious but supple mouthfeel and perfectly pleasant flavors. $24

4•1•1

The best time to experience Nevada County wine country is on Saturday, September 24, 1-4 p.m., when the Sierra Vintners and the Grass Valley Downtown Association present "A Taste of the Gold," the region's premier wine tasting event. It will be hald at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley. See sierravintners.com for more info.

Be sure and sign up for their email communications so you are kept in the loop of all events and special tasting excursions, including the upcoming OPEN HOUSE in mid September that will showcase their very "cool" (literally and figuratively) production facility (see photo). This state of the art building is designed 'green' and stays below 70 degrees without refrigeration.

Do wine awards matter? Certainly there is no shortage of wine competitions claiming so.

In a cursory search, I counted more than 90 different events fueling the perception among consumers that medals are a dime a dozen. Are wine awards a good gauge of quality?

At the recently concluded California State Fair Wine Competition, Solune Winegrowers won Best Syrah of California, a hugely prestigious award, for its 2007 Syrah produced from grapes grown right here in Nevada County.

Jacques Mercier, Solune's owner and winemaker, said he believes that competitions are a good independent assessment of quality. “Overall, good wines tend to win medals, but the reverse is not true,” he explained. “It's rare that a poor wine will ever win a Gold or Silver Medal.”

Most competitions have four judges on a panel, each with an independent vote. The combination of the four votes gives the wine its ultimate award. Even if one of the judges gives very high marks to an average wine, it will seldom garner enough support from the other three to get much more than a bronze medal, if even that.

While good wines tend to rise to the top, Gold Medals are remarkably elusive. There are simply too many variables at play. “Some judges love oak in a wine, others might find it too strong,” Mercier said. “Some prefer crisp acidity while others endorse softer wines.”

That creates the checks and balance system of wine judging. All four judges may perceive the wine has quality but differ in their individual perception of perfection. A wine scoring two Gold and two Silver votes is impressive but it only scores a Silver Medal. If three judges give it a Gold, clearly an indication of high quality, but the fourth holds out at Bronze, it gets a Silver Medal.

That's why a Double Gold, when all four judges vote Gold, is so rare. They all must agree on the highest level, on the same wine, at the same time.

There is another factor to consider as well, multiple awards for the same wine from different competitions. Remember good wines rise to the top. Coufos Cellars 2008 Viognier won a Silver Medal (see side bar) at three different competitions. Three independent judging panels giving Silver is a true gauge of a wine's quality.

Bent Medal Winery's 2008 Syrah gathered a Gold and two Silver Medals at three separate events, another sure sign of quality.

Double Oak's 2009 Chardonnay is yet another great example. Winning Double Gold and Best of Class at one competition is huge, winning Gold at another is further proof of that wine's high quality.

Consider the gauntlet that Solune's 2007 Syrah had to navigate to win Best Syrah of California at the State Fair. First, all four judges awarded it a Gold Medal. Then, with a larger pool of judges tasting it, it went up against all the highest awarded Syrahs of the Sierra Foothills, where it won Best Syrah. Then an even larger pool of judges tasted it against all the highest-ranking Syrahs from every region of California where once again it came out on top.

NEVADA COUNTY, CA -- June 15, 2011 – Sierra Vintner wineries continue with business as usual while taking a proactive organic approach to protecting their grapes after California agriculture officials recently discovered two pairs of the European Grapevine Moth in Nevada County.

"All wineries and downtown tasting rooms are open with an abundance of finished wine to enjoy," said Pilot Peak owner Lynn Wilson. "This ideal weather we are experiencing makes it perfect to come up for a picnic or tour one of our many locations."

Over the past few weeks, crews have been spraying an organic alternative to a standard pesticide and setting traps throughout the area to eliminate any potential moth larvae. The products being used are completely safe for the environment, degrade quickly and are non-toxic to humans. The spray is applied directly and contained within the plant system and, hence, only those insects that feed on the crop perish. Consumers wishing to visit the area should have no concerns as spraying doesn’t occur on the weekends and the organic product is susceptible to degradation by sunlight. Most formulations persist on foliage less than a week following application.

Phil Starr of Sierra Starr Vineyard was recently interviewed by KCRA TV and stated, “This is something that we need to deal with and take the proper precautions in doing so. I am confident that by finding it early, growers will be able to rid this pest before it becomes a problem."

Each weekend there are numerous local events occurring within the area and visitors are welcome to explore the many unique and diverse local wineries or the multitude of additional tasting rooms located in downtown Grass Valley and Nevada City.

For a complete list of Sierra Vintners wineries, including winery descriptions, locations, hours, contact information and area activities, go to www.sierravintners.com. You can also call 530.205.3016 or email info@sierravintners.com.

About Sierra Vintners
Sierra Vintners is a partnership of wineries located in Nevada County, California, collaborating to promote the emerging wine region located midway between Sacramento and Reno in the Sierra Foothills. This region features fifteen wineries and additional tasting rooms, offering a diverse wine experience with handcrafted and award winning wines, rural vineyards and wineries, and downtown tasting rooms in the historic towns of Grass Valley and Nevada City, CA.

Members of the Nevada County winery organization, formerly known as the Northern Sierra Wine Country, have announced the rebranding of their association and the campaign to follow. The group's new name will now be Sierra Vintners. "We recognized that our former name and brand did not effectively support who we are as a growing and vibrant wine region," stated association President Alex Szabo of Szabo Vineyards.

"Sierra Vintners showcases who we are by location (between the foothills and the Sierras), and by the fact that we, as a group, encompass all facets of the wine world. From grape growers to winemakers, tasting rooms, retail environments, and small production boutique wineries with uniquely blended varietals that you won't find in the larger wine regions, Sierra Vintners has it all."
