REVIEW: Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream Combination to Oily Skin

What is it?

Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector Oil-Free B.B. Cream is a new multi-faceted solution for a multitude of skin concerns. If you have oily skin, then you probably have a product to treat shine, and to minimize pores, and to cover blemishes. And maybe a few more products, too. Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector Oil-Free B.B. Cream can address all those oily-skin needs with just one application. Your skin will have a flawless, lightweight matte finish, and you’ll only need one product to get it.

It also states that it addresses skin concerns such as:

Shine
Large Pores
Uneven skin tone
Imperfections and marks.

The aim of BB Creams (Beauty Balm), this one one included, is to minimise the amount of products that you use in your beauty routine by offering an "All in One Solution." This product acts as a moisturizer, sunscreen (it has SPF 20), a face primer (since it mattifies and minimizes pores) and also acts as a skin treatment (evens skin tone). Since it has colour, if you chose to go sans makeup and just work it as a tinted moisturizer, that is fine too as it does provide a good bit of coverage.

I chose the colour medium/deep in this product as that is the shade I usually use for products that offer a basic shade range (light, medium, deep). It was very beige and just a bit too light, so I ended up mixing it with my foundation in order to get a more wearable shade. I was hoping that doing this would not affect how effective the product would be as this is my first experience with a BB Cream. Dark would have been a better choice for me.

The consistency of the product was a bit runny, or thin, but this did not affect the product's efficacy at all. It still offered good coverage with just a pea sized amount. I also believe that it did live up to its claim of controlling shine as I have extremely oily skin and usually end up blotting an hour into my day. This gave me a good 4-5 hours without having to deal with excessive oiliness. The times I tried it at home without mixing it with anything, I think it wore longer than the times I mixed it with my foundation. When used with my pressed powder my face was near flawless for longer since the powder also acts as a mattifier.

I will definitely give this a try in Deep as i think it will live up to its oil control claims. My pores also did seem less noticeable than usual. As far as evening skin tone goes, I will have to use it a bit more to see those results show.

HAIR: All about Silicones in hair products (Part 1)

After the last blog post on hair care featuring the OXX System, many person shave shown an interest in hair care and the products I use. I was sent some "Silicone Mix" products to review but thought it would be best to do it in a two part series, with the first talking a bit about Silicones.

Silicone hair products have become very popular recently, whether because of all the positive accolades, or from the negativity of those that think silicones are akin to the devil. In all actuality, silicones do your hair no more harm that hairspray or other styling product, but here are some quick facts about silicones before we get into the products.

What are silicones in hair products and how do they work?

There are two types of silicones: Water soluble and non-soluble silicones. Water soluble silicones are ones that can be washed away with water and nothing more. Non-soluble silicones are exactly the opposite of its soluble counterparts. Non-soluble silicones require sulfates in order to be washed away. While there are two categories of silicones, neither is better than the other because silicones do not actually benefit the hair in any way. In fact, silicones only give the “appearance” of healthier hair.
Silicones coat the hair to make it appear sleeker, frizz free and healthier. For example, silicones found in conditioners, hair polishers( serums) and frizz taming products coat the strands to make them “appear” sleeker and more polished. They also add a bit of weight to give fine, fragile hair substance. In essence, silicone based products only provide a temporary smoothing effect.

How do silicones work?

Silicones work by covering hair with a thin hydrophobic (waterproof) coating. This coating serves several purposes:

Reduces the porosity of the hair, which makes it less likely to absorb humidity (Which is why it’s great for smoothing and straightening!)
Reduces moisture loss from the inside of the hair (Great for conditioning.)
Lubricates the surface of the hair so it feel smoother and combs easier (Makes your hair feel slippery and less tangled.) (Example a hair polisher Fantasia High Potency IC Hair Polisher, 6 oz.)

Types of Silicones and their Purpose

Cyclomethicone is one of the most commonly used silicones in hair care. It’s a volatile silicone, which means it evaporates and won’t build up on your hair. It gives a silky, smooth feel and leaves the hair with incredible slip when wet and is found in both leave-on and rinse-off products.
Dimethicone Copolyol is a water-soluble, lightweight silicone that provides very little buildup. It is often used in conditioning shampoos.
Amodimethicone (or silicones that have “amo”, “amine” or “amino” in their name) is a different kind of silicone that is chemically modified to stick to your hair better. That means it conditions well but it can also be more challenging to remove. Amodimethicone is commonly used in leave-in conditioners.
Dimethicone is sometimes referred to as a silicone oil. Dimethicone coats hair, providing great shine and conditioning to the hair. However, because it’s so water insoluble, it can be difficult to remove. Additionally, this heavy coating is more likely to attract dirt and pollutants from the air, making the hair feel weighed down. Dimethicone is often found in serums and other leave-on products.

How can I deal with buildup if I use silicone products?

Wash your hair! Any decent shampoo will wash away silicone. However, if you are a heavy user or products containing silicone (particularly those with dimethicone), you may have to lather, rinse and repeat. I personally shampoo twice with a clarifying shampoo (no more than 2 times as this will strip essential moisture from your hair). You can also try a vinegar rinse every few weeks if buildup is bad and I recently discovered that baking soda is even a better clarifying agent than vinegar. If you want the benefits of silicone without the weight, look for lightweight silicones, as mentioned above, like cyclomethicone and dimethicone copolyol. These ingredients won’t build up but still give you some conditioning and shine benefits.

Bottom Line

I personally find the benefits of silicones to far outweigh any negatives. Silicones are very effective conditioners, provide great shine and can help smooth and straighten hair. If you are concerned about buildup and weigh down, be sure to look at the label to make sure you are using lightweight silicones.

As a lover and promoter of all things natural, especially when it comes to skin and hair, I was very pleased to come across the Irie Rock line of products. Irie Rock is made in Jamaica with all natural ingredients. They carry cleansers, anti aging products and body scrubs, lotions and splashes. I picked up two products from their line to test at Expo Jamaica 2014.

Tea Tree & Witch Hazel Deep Pore Cleanser

With Salicylic Acid

The facial cleansing products contain Tea Tree & Witch Hazel. Tea tree oil can kill bacteria and fungi. It comes from the evergreen leaves of the Australian Melaleuca alternifolia tree¹. Studies have proven it to work effectively at reducing acne. Though most scientific data points to benzoyl peroxide as a more successful acne treatment, Tea Tree Oil has been shown to produce fewer side effects. In a 1990 study published in the Medical Journal of Australia, 79% of people who used benzoyl peroxide experienced adverse reactions (e.g. itching, burning, stinging, and dryness), compared to only 44% of those using Tea Tree Oil. Acne sufferers, this product is calling your name!

Witch Hazel extract is derived from a plant of the same name. The bark, leaves, and twigs of witch hazel are all high in tannins, giving this plant astringent properties. Astringents are substances that can dry, tighten, and harden tissues. In other words, you may use an astringent on your skin to tighten pores and remove excess oil.

Sounds like a winning combination no? Irie Rock boasts that this product contains no parabens, no colourants, no alcohol and no artificial fragrance. The result is a clear, fragrance free liquid of medium thick consistency.

Deep pore cleanser

The bottle states: Gently and effectively wash away makeup and impurities with this deep pore facial cleanser that softens skin while leaving it looking healthy and revitalized and feeling clean and refreshed. Great for all skin types, regular use helps keep skin blemish free, refreshed and calm.

Tea Tree & Witch Hazel are general disinfectants that fight bacteria and help skin heal by encouraging the formation of new scar tissue. Their antioxidant and astringent properties make them effective against fighting acne.

I have been using this product for the past two weeks (in conjunction with the Tea Tree & Witch Hazel Scrub (which I will review shortly) and I can undoubtedly say that I have seen a difference in the overall appearance of my skin. I was never prone to acne, but I do have the occasional pimple. I will watch for those and update as necessary. My pores are noticeably smaller, and I am watching to see if my eczema (which flares up depending on the weather) will clear up with this. (So far there is a noticeable difference as my dry areas are less flaky.) Overall, my skin looks noticeably brighter.

My one gripe is that OH LORD it burned the first time I used it. But I have sensitive skin and there was no irritation as a result so I overlooked it. The second use was more tolerable, and now it doesn't bother me at all. I would suggest if you have very sensitive skin to try starting out using it once a day and gradually increase your usage.

So if you have problematic skin, acne, eczema or dermatitis. You should definitely give this product a try. You may just be pleasantly surprised at the results.

Full Hair Care Routine using OX - Organix Xtreme

I did a previous post doing a short review on the OX products since I was using them for a while and introduced them to the store. Many persons have since been asking (almost every other person that meets me) about what I use in my hair and how I use the products for maintenance and care.

Your hair can grow, and it wants to grow, every hair type, texture and kind. It needs your help. Damaging treatment (excessive heat), and hairstyles (braids and weaves) all hinder your hair's progress. I will often hear people say "my hair has been this length for years, it doesn't grow". Yes it does. But it is breaking at the same rate it is growing, hence the reason it seems stagnant.

While routines may vary and everyone's hair structure is different. I can almost 100% guarantee that what I do works. The products are 100% natural (nothing beats that!) full of essential oils that are known for scalp stimulation and hair regeneration. That means it can work for you. It's not a chemical mock up that might work for some and not work for others. Natural remedies are the best!

Firstly, my hair is processed, relaxed to be exact and that works for me. I also wrap my hair EVERY night using a satin scarf. Add some OX to the mix and it's a winning combo. I have little to no breakage, the usual shedding (hair turnover and regeneration) and I do a trim maybe every 6 months (YES! and it doesn't look anyway in between).

I do a relaxer about every 2.5 months at which time I usually have about an inch of new growth. In between relaxers, I wash once a week using a moisture rich shampoo and conditioner. After washing, and I try to lather only twice. More than that and you run the risk of drying your hair out. If you have a problematic scalp (which I do), a little jojoba oil (actually A LOT) on the scalp the day before you wash will moisturise and loosen any build-up.
It also imparts enough moisture to make your shampoo less harsh. After shampooing, I use the OX Pre Conditioning Treatment, which as it says is a treatment you use before conditioning. This product contains vitamins, essential oils, humecants etc. All which are nourishing the hair. It makes the hair stronger and thicker. Breakage will be minimised because of the strengthening properties.

OX Pre Conditioning Treatment

This product is very thick and goopy. This is applied to evenly coat the just shampooed still wet hair. If you have a problematic hairline too, get it on there. The clove oils are excellent for scalp stimulation and will help with regrowth. Depending on the amount of damage and the level of treatment needed, you can leave it on between 3-15 minutes.
To minimise the amount of tugging on my hair when I apply it (because it is really sticky), I more often than not, mix it with my conditioner (that also makes it last longer too!). OR my favourite method - a mix of 4 oz treatment to approximately 20 oz of conditioner (a big bottle) and it works just fine! I apply this conditioner/OX mix after shampooing and leave it for about 3 -5 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. When rinsing my conditioner, I comb out under the shower/ running water. Because my hair is long, the water helps with the de-tangling so there is minimal tugging on the hair.

The next step is applying the Rejuvenating Mist. This mist is a lightweight spray that has in the base essential oils again, vitamins and lots of other good stuff that restores your hairs PH balance and eliminates frizz. (I personally like to mix it with the OX Serum as its great for heat styling. I put the serum in the mist bottle and apply, and when I blow dry, there is no need to flat iron. My hair is THAT sleek.

SO, we have washed, pre conditioned, conditioned and towel dried. When applying the Rejuvenating Mist and OX Serum, I use a large wide tooth comb to section my hair in about 6-8 parts, and saturate completely with the mist. The hair is sectioned so that when you blow dry, heat is applied only where needed and not the the entire head of hair. I blow dry on MEDIUM. It takes a little longer, but your hair will thank you. Minimal heat is all you need.

After the hair is dry, apply a bit of OX Oils Maintenance Blends paying special attention to the hairline and scalp if you have problematic scalp. This oil contains clove oils, rosemary oils, jojoba oil and more. A bit more serum is also added to the length of the hair to smooth it. I do this in sections to ensure that it is distributed evenly. The serum is oil based (but super light so that your hair still moves) and the best part is that it is silicone free. Silicones have a tendency to dry out hair overtime even though they impart excellent shine upon application. I then use my dryer on medium heat again to run through for about 1 minute to make sure the oil and serum are properly absorbed.

Wrapping my hair with a satin scarf

I then wrap my hair using a satin scarf. Satin and silk are much better materials for wrapping hair than cotton because of the smooth surface and non absorbent nature. Hair retains moisture and looks really sleek and shiny. Alternatives to a scarf are satin or silk pillow cases, satin bonnets or a satin wraps. If I have somewhere to go, I make sure my hair is wrapped for at least 12 hrs (6pm - 6 am) so that it is really sleek and shiny. If I do that, there is no need to flat iron, which means less heat for my hair. Alternatively, If I do need super straight hair and I don't have time to wrap, I will flat iron on MAX 350 - 375°F, (You not need to use the highest setting as this will cause breaking), using a bit of OX Serum on the ends for heat protection.

I hope this really long epistle is useful to someone who is in limbo about caring for their hair, be it relaxed, natural, straight, wavy or kinky. You can have healthy hair, treat your hair right, no excessive combing, tugging, brushing, glue in, anything that can compromise your hair's structure and you will see a big difference! Last but not least, drink lots of water! Eat healthy, hair needs nutrition just like your body does.

I was planning to tackle each of these products individually but. Since I use them all together, I thought I would give a quickie review of them all together. If you would like a more in depth individual product review of each item, let me know!

I'm an Ox Head! I have been using the Ox - Organix Xtreme line for close to a year now (truthfully, sometimes I was not consistent in the early stages) and it had made a difference in the condition of my hair whenever I use it. Since it doesn't get dry as easily, I have reduced breakage; and because it is stronger, I trim less often, enabling more growth. Let's not even mention the unnatural sheen my hair has. Insane!

The Ox hair care line is a system of 100% natural ingredients that offers comprehensive benefits for ALL hair types. I have always heard people say they need to go natural in order to have a "nice" or "full" head of hair that has less damage and can grow because it will stand up better to the wear and tear of styling and also to external elements. Not true. Anyone can have a healthy head of hair. It's all in the way you care for your hair. All types of hair will get dry, or break, or shed, no matter the texture or type. The key is replenishing whatever your hair has lost during styling and exposure to daily elements.

I started out using just the Pre-conditioning treatment (at the time that was the only item in the line). This is a rich blend of all natural ingredients and essential oils and vitamins that is used before a moisturizing conditioniner. This treatment reduces frizz, improves elasticity and improves drying time. (I blow dry my hair, no rollers.) My hair usually takes about 15-20 minutes to blow dry.

This is followed up with the Leave in Rejuvenating Mist (my personal favourite) which is used after conditioning, prior to styling. I used to use Redken's Heat Glide serum or Cream of Nature's Kisii prior to blow drying. With the mist, I get the sheen that I got from those products, but absolutely no buildup, and my hair retains moisture better than before. My hair is light weight shiny and blow dries bone straight, as if it was flat ironed. So that's less heat for my hair again.

The Maintenance oil blend is used to add moisture and give a nice sheen, especially if you flat iron (which I end up doing once every 2 months when I do a relaxer). It is a combination of essential oils (and smells fantastic) which are excellent in promoting hair growth by strengthening the hair and stimulating the scalp.

If you have problems with breakage, if your hair is damaged, or even if you just need to maintain a healthy head of hair, give it a go! You won't regret it.

18 Again Vagina Cream?

Twice in one day, I must be on a roll.

Does having sex feel like throwing a hotdog down a hallway? Fear not! An Indian pharmaceutical company hawking a new vaginal tightening gel called "18 Again", which promises to whip aging lady parts back into shape, all under the guise of female empowerment.

In the YouTube ad , an Indian woman lures a man onto a dance floor, loosely stealing lines from Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” as the couple purrs that it “feels like the very first time.”

On its website, the company boasts that in addition to tightening, the gel also “helps prevent infections, encourages natural lubrication, masks foul odor, reduces involuntary urine escape,” amongst other surprising effects which are "clinically proven".

The gel is manufactured by pharmaceutical company Ultratech India. Its all-natural ingredients include aloe vera, Vitamin E and pomegranate.

The company’s website features an impressive FAQ section, including an explainer on how to determine if “you have loose vagina.”

Have you ever been browsing the net or reading a blog and just came across some bit of information that just made you think, "WHYYY???""

It's been happening to me quite a bit lately and I have decided to be kind and share the moments of joy. I will post these under "just plain weird".

Michelle Obama pictured as a nude slave in Spanish magazine Fuera de Serie has to be one of the most inappropriate things I have encountered in a while. While I do understand an artist's need to express their creativity, some things are clearly overstepping boundaries (a nude depiction of the first lady/ current presidents wife definitely is) and shouldn't be done just to boost sales.

What are your thoughts on this photo?

P.S. For those wondering, yes it is photoshop.

Jamaica's 2012 Olympic Uniforms

There seems to be a whole lot of hoopla about Olympic uniforms for the Opening Ceremony this year (2012). From talks of whose was made in China, to whose looks cheap to those that are ill fitting. While I understand the need to represent your country on an international level by putting your best face (or foot in this case) forward, I really don't see how any of these things will affect the athletes performance (except for USA with their patent pending, golf ball dimpled outfits designed to shave seconds off their sprint times. I wish them luck, we are still gonna kick ass).

Nevertheless, here are pics of Team Jamaica's Olympic uniforms that have been criticized mercilessly. I really don't get the big deal. I like the military look. I love the guys' uniforms. I think maybe the female model(s) don't wear the clothes so well (and yes the skirts are a bit ill fitting), and of course in terms of formal factor we are nothing like Team UK who opted for 3-piece suits but at least they weren't made in China (not that we would care). Speaking of which, that shouldn't be a bad thing, Team Hong Kong's will by far be the best dressed at the opening ceremony. Not important though, because even if they were, Jamaicans don't care, cuz we're still gonna kick ass.
