Amritsar: Baba Sewa Singh, the recipient of the Padma Shri for 2010, the fourth highest civilian award, has not only played a pivotal role in the upkeep and maintenance of historic Gurudwaras at Khadoor Sahib, but has also taken upon himself the task of nurturing the nature by planting trees across the country.

However, the modest man says that he does work not to earn any credit, but started it on the 500th birth anniversary of Guru Angad Dev as social work for the betterment of mankind.

“Four to five projects were started such as environment, education and sports to mark the celebrations. The whole credit for this achievement goes to Sikh devotees. It’s a team effort and one person alone could not have done it. We get the inspiration from the teachings of the holy Shri Guru Granth Sahib, which talks about protection of trees,” Singh said.

“As people organize community meals to gain satisfaction so protection of environment is also service to the community as it provides fresh air. If you plant more trees, they will provide oxygen and people will remain healthy,” he added.

Talking about the threat that the environment is facing, Singh said: “The main challenge before the world is global warming. The glaciers are melting and I believe environment is the foremost crisis. We have to preserve the water reservoirs; the air is also getting polluted and there is no process to clean the polluted air.”

“The more trees you plant the fresher the air will be. The environment will remain clean. The young and the old, every human being should think about keeping the environment clean and plant more trees. We have to conserve more water and make efforts not to waste it,” he added. e is working in different parts of the country.

“We have already covered an area of 250kms, including in Gwaliar, Jaipur, Kartarpur, Dera Baba Nanak and Khadoor Sahib in Punjab. We have planted neem trees in 50kms and Peepal trees in 100Kms,” Singh said.

“We plan to add 20 to 25 kms this year. If we get more cooperation from Sikh devotees then we can enlarge the effort as we have 100,000 saplings in our nursery. We even supply these aplings to schools, cremation grounds and panchayat lands. Be it a Sikh, Buddhist, Jain or a Muslim – any person who believes in his religion, works for humanity,” he added. The brief highlights of Guru ji’s jeevan:

1. Continued the military traditions started by his grandfather Guru Har Gobind Ji
2. Kept 2200 mounted soldiers at all times.
3. Made several tours to the Malwa and Doaba regions of the Punjab.
4. Guruji’s son, Ram Rai, distorts Bani in front of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, after which the Guru is supposed to have said, ” Ram Rai, you have disobeyed my order and sinned. I will never see you again on account of your infidelity.” and prdered Siks not to mix up with Ram Rayias.
5. By punishing Ram Rai Guru Har Rai Ji sent a clear messages for then and sikhs generations to follow that nobody is allowed to distort bani fo Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (the present Guru of sikhs).

Before Guru Ji left his physical body(in 1661), he nominated Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji, as the next(8th) Guru of the Sikhs.

Today sikhs are celebrating the birthday of Baba Deep Singh Jee. Lets have a look back on the life and martyrdom of this great gursikh.

Early Life: Baba Deep Singh Ji was born on the 20th January 1682 A.D. in the village of Pahuwind in district of Amritsar. His father’s name was Bhai Bhagtu. He went to Anandpur on the Vaisakhi of 1700 A.D., where after obtaining baptism (into Sikhi) he started learning weaponry and riding from the Sikhs. He began learning reading and writing Gurmukhi and interpretation of Guru’s word from Bhai Mani Singh Ji.

Sewa: After spending couple of years at the Guru’s institution, he returned to? his village in 1702 A.D. got married and started living there. He then went to Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Talwandi Sabo in 1705 AD where he helped Bhai Mani Singh Ji in making copies of Guru Granth sahib.

After, Guru Sahib left for Delhi, he took up the service of looking after Gurudwara Damdama Sahib.

Joining the Army: In 1709 A.D., he joined Baba Banda Singh Bahadur in chastising the tyrants of Sadhaura and Sirhind. in 1733 A.D. he was appointed as a leader of one of the squad by Nawab Kapoor Singh Singhpuria. On Vaisakhi day of 1748 A.D., when Dal Khalsa was reorganized into twelve misls, he was entrusted with the leadership of Shaheedan Misl.

Storming of Golden Temple: In April 1757 A.D., when Abdali during his fourth invasion was returning to Kabul from Delhi with precious booty and young men and women as captives, Singhs made a plan to rob him of the valuables and set the prisoners free. The squad of Baba Deep singh was deployed near Kurukshetra. His squad freed large number of prisoners and lightened the burden of valuables of Abdali considerably. While departing from Lahore, Abdali appointed his son Taimur Shah, the Governor of Lahore and told him, “Try to finish them (Sikhs)?. In accordance with his orders Taimur Shah started demolishing Gurudwara?s and filling the holy pools with debris.

Restoring the sikh pride: When Baba Deep singh came to know of the demolition of Harminder Sahib, he narrated it to the congregation of Damdama Sahib and said, “Diwali will be celebrated at Amritsar this year.” Five hundred Singhs came forward to go with him. Baba Deep Singh offered prayers before starting for Amritsar, “My head may fall at Harminder Sahib.” By the time squad reached Taran Tarn the number of Singhs going with Baba Deep singh reached approximately Five thousand.

As the news of the approach of Singhs spread, the Governor of Lahore sent his general with an army of Twenty thousand(20,000) to face them. His army took up positions Six miles north of Amritsar and waited for the Singhs there. Both the armies clashed near Gohalwar on the 11th November, 1757 A.D. Fighting bravely Singhs pushed the army back and reached village Chabba where General Attal Khan came forward and inflicted a blow on Baba Deep Singh ji which made his neck lean to one side.

A Sikh reminded him, “You had resolved to reach the periphery of the pool.” On hearing the talk of the Sikh, Baba Deep Singh ji did unfathomable task. With Guru’s Grace he took his head in his left and double-edged sword in the right hand, removing the enemies from his way with the strokes of his , reached the periphery of Harmindar Sahib where he breathed his last. There was a chaos in the rival amr and when they saw this miracle of a Gursikh many afghanis are said to have left the battlefield.

The Singhs celebrated the Diwali of 1757 A.D. in Harminder Sahib. Today at the same spot, just south of the norteast corner of the parkarma at Sri harimandir sahib (Golden Temple), Amritsar, a large marble octagonal tile marks the spot where his head landed. Many pilgrims stop and pause here daily, as they have since his death, to sprinkle rose pedals and lay garlands on the tile as they pray in his honor.

PIL filed on the state sponsored mass murder of sikhs in 1984.

Jalandhar: A PIL has been filed in the Delhi High Court on 23rd Jan, 2010 to seek constitution of a monitoring committee to track the 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases, Senior Advocate in Supreme Court H S Phoolka said here.

“A majority of families are waiting for justice for more than 25 years. Special public prosecutors should be appointed into such cases to expedite delivery of justice,” Phoolka told reporters.

He alleged the CBI was not serious in following cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Phoolka said the the PIL is listed for Wednesday.

Sikh Sangat fear another arson attack on Blackburn Gurdwara in Melbourne

The president of Melbourne’s largest Sikh Gurdwara has requested additional night-time security from Victoria Police fearing another untoward incident after another Melbourne gurdwara was torched last week. The president said that we feel safe for the moment but are fearful of the future of another arson attack.

He said local police were working with the Gurdwara and Indian community on strategies to keep themselves, their possessions and property safe. Indian High Commissioner Sujatha Singh also visited the Blackburn Gurdwara last Sunday to urge followers to remain calm and let authorities handle the burning of the Lynbrook Gurdwara.
