Making a list. Checking it twice, three and four times

So it's been 4 seasons since I've done Showcase. I stopped doing it because many of the Japanese buyers would prefer to place their orders in Paris. But I've decided to make my life easier so I'm back in Showcase this year.

I'm really excited. I've always loved being associated and around craft people. I can relate to their product, business and vision more than in the fashion world.

A few more sleeps (or sleepless nights) ahead, I've started waking up thinking I'm going to forget something. So I've decided to write this post to remind myself and hope you all can add to this check list. It will help all of us!!

1. Samples

(these must be labelled and with swings tags...with all the information)

2. Price lists

(it helps if you have the currency conversion

in a few currencies..ie Yen, US$ etc)

3. Order forms

4. Colour cards and extra collection information

5. Pens

6. Calculator

7. Business cards or cards or something with your stand number so people can take with them if they like what they've seen

8. Double sided tape... not sure for what but it's great to have!

9. Stapler - with staples

(so you can staple your clients business card onto the order form)

10. Water and food

(Cafe at RDS is rubbish and way too expensive.

Nuts and easy fruit are great just in case you blood sugar drops and you can't leave the stand...sounds dramatic but you never know when you'll be busy

(usually when you least expect it)

Almost 24 hours into 2012 ...many plans ....many changes ....

I've neglected this space far too long.

So I'll keep you updated with everything that's happening at Silent HQ.

For now, I'm surrounded by books, yarn, fairy lights

and the scent of freshly baked gingerbread cookies.

To coincide with Chinese New Year celebrations in 2012, the photographic exhibition of Scottish explorer John Thomson will include over 50 stunning images with a wide variety of themes in China including people, architecture, domestic and street scenes. A selection of traditional Chinese clothing and accessories from the Library’s own collection will also be on display.

For the past few months, Silent Storyteller has been put on the back burner. Feeling guilty about it too!

Times have been busy and there is no sign of things changing. From now until the end of January I will be designing, knitting and making pieces for the second opening of our pop up The Silent Gallery, Christmas madness at Bow and for showcase of Autumn Winter 2012 early next year.

It's all positive, I guess. I'm back wholesaling next year... open for 'business to business' again, under my own terms and not compromising margins, like I did before.

The past few years have been a real challenge, financially, trying to raise cash to keep selling so I can cover holes and keep producing. It's been like going round and round in circles with blindfold.

Late next year, if all goes to plan, I'll be in a much easier place

Many shops have been knocking on my door, but financing production had become an impossible task as banks were reluctant to lend money, and to be honest I didn't want to have months of sleepless nights not knowing if shops were surviving the turmoil and changing times (crisis and customers shifting to online shopping) and if I would even get paid.

Ireland has saved my business, quite ironic as before I was dependent on Japan and US for business 'success'... the challenge is on going, but thanks to a very kind group of people, including press, stylists, personal shoppers, customers and SPECIALLY to Margaret and Wendy (at Bow), I've managed to sail through the worst

I hope!

For now I shall go back to my giant crochet hook and mega pom poms!

Who wants to be a milliner?

I bumped into Brendan Courtney last weekend , he's come up with the fantastic idea of searching for the next star in millinery.

There are incredibly talented milliners blossoming all over the country, so what a super opportunity to really show what you're capable of!

The rules are still to be confirmed, and for what I gather in our brief encounter it is open to anyone who would like the chance to showcase their craft and talent.

So if you've been quietly making hats for decades, or have always dreamed of doing it and feel you have what it takes to become the next Philip Treacy or Stephen Jones check out his Facebook page to hear about how to apply etc...

I'm not sure what he'll be playing, but he promises an hour 'free of electric guitars'

Hugh Lane Gallery Dinner

Last night I was HONOURED to be invited to a pop up dinner at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin.

An event organized by Pivot, and hosted by Ali Grehan, as part of our bid to become World Design Capital in 2014.

It was an incredible evening, walking into the gallery where the table had been set under the atrium for approximately 50 people. My heart beat so fast with excitement when I saw how beautiful it all was.

(Charlie walking into the chocolate factory must have had a similar experience)

We were asked to bring our favourite chair. Not taking it too seriously, and I have been working 16 hours a day for the past week...I didn't think too much of it. So I took a very basic fold up chair...

Dare I confess... from IKEA.

Needless to say, an evening full of architects, industrial, furniture and graphic designers the table had been accessorized with the most diverse and incredible looking chairs.

After dinner someone stood up and started telling a wonderful story about their chair, and then another person and another one. At this point I was sliding down, trying to hide under the table.

I was SO embarrassed. MORTIFIED!

Thank GOD someone stopped the chain, and conversation swiftly changed to other topics.

In honor of my shameful evening, I will transform my very basic fold up chair, into a special one.

It WILL become my favourite chair, and will always remind me of this dinner.
