Tom Steipp will share from scriptures and a lifetime of personal experience God’s principles for improving your odds of being successful in business, and more importantly, in marriage.

We live in Silicon Valley, business can be demanding, marriage can be frustrating. Many young Christians think that if they simply go to church regularly and follow the mores of American culture, they will have a God-glorifying career, marriage and family. The belief that we can have it all drives many careers and marriages to the ragged edge – and beyond. We cannot put our lives and behaviors on auto-pilot, losing sight of the Bible’s teachings, and expect to find real success in either arena.

God designed marriage for our benefit and enjoyment. Tom and his wife, Deb, have been married for 35 years; he readily acknowledges the challenges of trying to balance career, marriage, family, and ministry. He will share some of his bigger mistakes along with his greatest joys in navigating those turbulent waters. Along the way he has become convinced that the best principles for business and marriage come straight out of Bible.

Join us as Tom, accompanied by the love of his life, shares some of the Biblical principles that have molded his own life.

Tom’s Bio

Tom Steipp is the President and CEO of Symmetricom, Inc.

Tom joined Symmetricom, Inc. in March 1998, as President and Chief Operating Officer of Telecom Solutions, a Division of Symmetricom, Inc. Since December 1998, he has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Symmetricom, Inc.

From 1996 to 1998, Tom was Vice President and General Manager of Broadband Data Networks at Scientific-Atlanta, where he led the development and deployment of one of the industry’s first Cable Modem solutions. Prior to that he spent seventeen years at Hewlett-Packard, where he held a number of Marketing and General Management positions in their Disk Storage, Networking and Federal Government Divisions.

Tom spent eight years in the United States Air Force as an Instructor Pilot in T-38 aircraft and an Electrical Engineer.

Tom has 2 children and 3 grandchildren, and resides in Los Gatos, California, with his wife, Debra. He attends church at Venture Christian Church in Los Gatos. He has served on the Boards of Living on the Edge; Walk Thru the Bible, and Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center.

Tom holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy and an MBA from Purdue University.

Abstract:

Evangelicals, once at the periphery of American life, now wield power in the White House and on Wall Street, at Harvard and in Hollywood. How have they reached the pinnacles of power in such a short time? And what does this mean for evangelicals—and for America?

Drawing on personal interviews with an astonishing array of prominent Americans—including two former Presidents, dozens of political and government leaders, more than 100 top business executives, plus Hollywood moguls, intellectuals, athletes, and other powerful figures—D. Michael Lindsay shows first-hand how they are bringing their vision of moral leadership into the public square.

Profile:

D. Michael Lindsay is assistant professor of sociology at Rice University where he is also the faculty associate of Leadership Rice and assistant director of the Center on Race, Religion and Urban Life at Rice University. Dr. Lindsay earned his Ph.D. in sociology at Princeton University, where he was named a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow in 2002 and the Harold W. Dodds Fellow in 2004. He also received the 2003 Outstanding Teaching Award—the university’s highest award for graduate student teaching—from Princeton’s Graduate School and the Association of Princeton Graduate Alumni.

Do you feel like you are using the gifts that God has given you to their fullest potential to glorify Him and serve others?

God empowers each of us with at least one spiritual gift. Join Nancy Ortberg for a morning of discovering how God has gifted you and how your skills, personality and unique experiences can best be used for His glory in ministry, your career, and your personal relationships.

Lunch will be provided during the workshop.

Nancy Ortberg

Nancy Ortberg served as a Teaching Pastor for 8 years at Willow Creek Community Church in So. Barrington, Illinois. During that time she led the Network ministry, helping people identify their spiritual gifts and find a place of service in the church. She also led Axis, for the 18-20 something generation.

Axis included weekend services of 1200-1500 people in their 20’s who worshipped together, served the poor and participated in small group communities. Nancy is a founding partner of Teamworx2, a consulting firm that works with organizations, helping leaders overcome the team dysfunctions that are obstacles to high performance and work enjoyment. She and her husband John live in the Bay Area and have three children, Laura, Mallory, and John.

Wally is a co-founder of InterWest Partners (1979) one of the larger venture capital partnerships in the United States. Mr. Hawley’s prior experience includes seven years as president of SHV North America Holding Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of a Netherlands corporation and several years as a consultant with McKinsey and Company in their San Francisco and Amsterdam Offices

He is currently devoting the majority of his time to non-profit (ministry) endeavors.

His present affiliations include:

Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Stanford Institute of Economic Policy Research, Stanford University

Guest lecturer at Stanford Business School

Board of Directors member for Voyager Expanded Learning

National Board Member of Young Life

National Board Member of FaithWorks

Elder, Menlo Park Presbyterian Church

Wally has a B.A. from Stanford University and a M.B.A. from Harvard University.

He has been married to Alexandra Hawley for 37 years. They have two daughters and two grandsons. His hobbies are hiking, fly fishing, and reading.

Wally currently resides in Atherton, California.

Jeremy Rivera, The Door
Jeremy Rivera serves as the founder and teaching pastor of The Door, a ministry of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church that is embracing the post-modern generation on the Peninsula with the gospel of Christ. While finishing up a degree in Finance and International Business from Hawaii Pacific University, Jeremy had originally intended on working in investment banking. He had served a four-year summer internship with the Federal Reserve Bank and had no plans to enter the vocational ministry. However, while surfing in Hawaii, he was struck by Walt Whitman’s striking words, “the powerful play of life goes on and you may contribute a verse.” God revealed to him that his “verse” to the play of life would best be invested by giving his life away to those things that would last for all eternity, Christ and people. Jeremy graduated from International Theological Seminary with an M.A. in Biblical Studies while starting a ministry in Hawaii called The Bridge, which continues to thrive in reaching the next generation with the unchanging gospel. He enjoys playing guitar, fly-fishing, golf and writing.

Karin Stahl, eBay Foundation & Project Faith
Karin Stahl first went to Guatemala in July of 1997 to meet the eight-year-old boy she sponsored through Compassion International. Her life was changed when she went to San Pedro La Laguna on Lake Atitlan and saw the way God was using a Mayan pastor, Emilio Battz to empower the children of his community. With very little money, Pastor Emilio donated his land, the inheritance for his children, to start a Christian School called Colegio Bethel. The school was created not only to teach the shy Mayan children to read and write, but also impress upon them their worth as humans, made in the image of God.

Karin immediately realized though watching the children, that her visit to Guatemala was much more than a short vacation. It was an invitation by Christ to get involved in a dynamic and blessed ministry.

The school appeals to the poor children in the village, and therefore keeps tuition very low, so teachers at Colegio Bethel were being paid 25% of national minimum wage. Karin, committed to raising teacher’s salaries. Karin partnered with Alaskan supporter Joe Lomonaco, who called the project, “Project Faith”, (or Proyecto Fe in Spanish).

Since 1998, Karin has gathered mission teams of individuals to go to the school to work on a variety of projects, including the implementation of a computer center, financial planning courses for the community, make-shift medical clinics and training seminar, construction and more.

As an early employee of the online auction service, eBay, Karin Stahl had access to the executives, and was able to share her vision of empowering this Mayan community. The company donated computers, and as a result of her efforts, they invited her to head up the eBay Foundation. She now dedicates her professional time managing the eBay Foundation, and her volunteer time working on Project Faith.

Karin keeps her roles in these two organizations separate in that the Project Faith ministry is not an official grantee of the eBay Foundation. However, eBay has recently accepted Karin’s proposal to fund an Internet Café in the village, where community members will receive access to computers and the Internet. Proceeds from this business will help fund the school that Project Faith works with.

John Sage manages the general business operations of Pura Vida Coffee from the company’s administrative office in Seattle, Washington. Prior to launching Pura Vida Coffee, John spent nine years working in various high-tech marketing positions. He served as Vice-President of Marketing and Business Development for Starwave Corporation, a leading Internet media company recently acquired by Disney and Infoseek. Prior to joining Starwave in 1994, John spent five years at Microsoft, where he ran the Microsoft Works business and later directed marketing for the company’s flagship application product, Microsoft Office. John graduated from Harvard Business School in 1989. In addition to devoting professional energies to Pura Vida Coffee, John is active in a number of philanthropic and charitable activities. He serves on the board of the Northwest AIDS Foundation, the Northwest Leadership Foundation and on the Board of Governors of Opportunity International, a micro-credit lending organization based in Chicago.

Jeff Finger, Golden Gate Community Church (’99 parish)
Jeff is the pastor of the “99″ parish of Golden Gate Gate Community Church in San Francisco.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Jeff has a background in Mathematics and Engineering, spending several years in the aerospace industry working for both McDonnell Douglas and Rohr Industries. He has also taught high school Mathematics at Thurgood Marshall Academic High School in San Francisco. Becoming more and more convinced that he should respond to a sense of God’s call on his life to preach, he returned to graduate school in August of 1991. Jeff completed his Master of Divinity degree at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky in August of 1994.

Since 1997, Jeff has been a pastor at GGCC as its worship leader and pastor in residence. In July of last year, GGCC was prepared to extend its influence further into the city by commissioning Jeff as the pastor of its second parish. Jeff then left teaching in order to serve Golden Gate full time and helped develop the core of people that established the “99 Parish” on November 6. He has been serving as parish pastor ever since and still marvels at the wonder of his good fortune to be formed as a pastor by such a graced community of people.
