Part One: Alone in the Tahari

"You spoil that kaiila," her mother complained as she twisted kaiila hair into rope, her strong, brown fingers making quick work of the task. "He'll go to market just like the other ones!"

"Yes, and he'll fetch a better price if he's well-trained and well-groomed!" Pia instantly regretted her retort.

Pia's aunt Kao tittered her annoying laugh and ducked into a tent to nurse her newborn. The older children, Pia's sister and nieces and and cousins, sensed a battle and ran off, chasing a dust-devil out of range of the argument. Grandma Pietas, for whom Pia had been named, didn't look up from her loom. Her sigh rang loud over the thump of her shuttle.

At least the boys were all with the herd and wouldn't be witness to her latest maternal set-down. The men had ridden to the next waterhole to check its condition before they made their next move, and with luck wouldn't be back before dusk.

"What do you know of either?" Pia's mother said, her voice loud enough to echo off the hills. "If you were well-trained and well-groomed, perhaps you'd have a mate in another caravan. How many matches has your father tried to arrange for you? I lose count. Good, strong men from fine tribes. One a caravan master, even. You are too stubborn, too headstrong, too lazy!" She stood, coiling her finished rope as she rose.

"Honored Mother, I'm sorry!"

"Get out. Get out of my sight. Go gather dry dung for the night fires. Gather a lot, for I don't wish to see you again for at least an ahn!

Pia wandered farther from camp than she ever had before. The sun baked her uncovered head and blew her messy hair into wild tangles. It took half an ahn for her to calm down enough to realize that she had left her dung-gathering bag as well as her water sack behind with her head wrap.

That caravan master was fat and greasy. He mainly dealt in rugs and trinkets, not kailla. Pia didn't care about tribal alliances or merchant favors. Wherever she went, she wanted to be with the kailla. They were her real family, she thought resentfully.

The heat was too much. She had to return to camp, even if it meant yet another tongue lashing from her mother. She was a child of the desert and she knew that she must respect the sands, or die.

Even before she could see the tops of the tents at the water hole, she could feel something was wrong. There was a hint of smoke and iron in the wind, and under that, the smell of nervous kaiila.

Though the tents were still standing, everyone was gone. Every portable thing, all the kaiila that had been tethered at camp, also gone. Some half cooked flat bread lay spilled next to her mother's baking sheet, the only provisions left in camp. A few rags lay scattered about. Their snapping in the wind was the only sound in the too silent camp. Raiders.

She grabbed her head wrap and a handful of muddied water from the water hole and then dashed down the hillside to where the herd should be. As she feared, the herd too was gone. All that was left was the corpse of her cousin Akim, who would now never see his thirteenth birthday, never become a man. She was too dry to wail for him, too tired to do more than cover his body with a little sand. The scavengers would be at it for sure, if the men didn't return to bury him before full night.

Pia staggered back to the empty tents to wait.

How does herder girl from the Tahari wastes find herself on her knees in a Sultan's palace? Such could be the fate of any woman living in a harsh world without a protector. Does she long to be free? Would she return to herding kaiila, moving from one seasonal waterhole to the next with not much to look forward to but a chain of never-ending chores?

Perhaps. She is no stranger to hard labor and she doesn't fear the lash. She misses her kaiila and the wild, open spaces. Then again she is, after all, a female. Silken clothes and perfumed skin are not unwelcome and as property, much better care is taken of her than ever before. The adventure of new places and new people is very beguiling. Even so, she hasn't found a slave heart in her breast. She is always longing, and thinking of what used to be.

Okay, even though the books weren't quite so literal with the "red silk" part, there's much to appreciate in actual red silk design in Second Life. From the sublimely delicate work of Beautiful Sin to the quirky Senorita Kajira of Sunrise Silks (sadly no longer available) to an anonymous red camisk by Heather Steinbeck, a girl can't go wrong with red.

Life in the forest in winter is hard. Days are short, nights are long and food is scarce. A good ranger is extra-vigilant of her charges in this dark time of the year.

Girl pia hasn't been blogging for a really long time, but she's been following various fashion blogs in her absence. You can take the girl out of the blogging. . .or something like that! So when pia saw Luna Jubilee's cute 52 weeks of color challenge come up, she thought it was a great way to get back to fashion blogging without having a huge commitment.

Some notes to note: Yes, pia is wearing an old skin. There's a reason for this: It is very hard to find skins in this skin tone. If anyone knows of some newer skins in a nice dark honey skin tone, please drop a note. Yes, pia is wearing that fasafasa hair. That's 'cause she lost her hairbrush again. 'Cause she's lost. In the Lost World Sim. Hammered Iron collar is also an older item, discontinued.

Seeing Alaska Metropolitan's Ruth Makeover challenge on SLaundry, and the lovely job Elusyve did with Ruth there, pia decided she had to join in the fun and make Ruth over into a slave girl. So we put on the following items:

And since slave girls don't wear the shoes, not even feet adjustment was needed. No feets are visible with the lovely full skirt. If they're huge, Ruth's potential owner might not even notice as long as she wears the long silks! Body Politik makeover artist's Polly Pavlova comments that Ruth looks kind of sad, so we used one of the "crying" skins that Free Spirit put out a while ago. Much fun!
