Years ago it was easy to recognize a real orchid from a fake one. You can still find the bad ratty flowers at the dollar stores.

But you can also find high quality silk orchids that truly mimic the look of real orchids. These silk orchids have been made with the care and the study of the real orchids to make them look as realistic as possible.

Cheap fake orchids

The fake orchids used to be expensive; today they are much cheaper. You might still have to pay more for a faux orchid than the real one, if you want good quality.

But have you tried to take care of a real orchid? Then you know how difficult it can be; and often it dies down even though you have done everything you can.

They last forever

With a fake orchid that’s not a problem. It will last forever, and you do not have to do anything. Go on a vacation for two weeks. It will still look fresh.

If you are allergic to flowers, you can still have a beautiful home. Not many people are allergic to silk!

So by choosing faux orchids, you get all the advantages; without the trouble.

When buying silk orchid flowers, you can choose between orchids from all over the world; especially if you are looking on the Internet.

So the because the selection is huge, there are some choices you have to make.

Species

You can find almost any silk orchid species like silk Cymbidium orchids and silk Phalaenopsis orchids.

So if you have your favorite orchid species, you can be almost sure, you can find it on the Internet; even though it normally only grows in Papua New Guinea.

Form

Silk orchid flowers can be found in several different forms. You can buy a single stem to be place in a vase. Or you can buy a complete silk flower arrangement.

Potted artificial orchid flowers are another, very popular option.

Colors

The ranges of colors are almost endless. So you can always find a silk orchid flower that matches your home.

Yellow and purple are the most common colors, but you can also find artificial orchids flowers in cream, green, white, burgundy, orange and red.

Silk orchid plants are almost maintenance free. You do not have to water them or give them fertilizer. Silk orchid plants will never wither.

Just keep them in a dry location and away from direct sunlight, because constant light will fade the colors.

Also keep the artificial orchid plants upright. If they lie down they will not retain their shape.

Cleaning the silk orchid plant

For an ordinary day cleaning just use a feather duster to make them look new and fresh.

Every three to six months it is okay to expose the silk orchid plant to water and direct sunlight; and that is when you are cleaning them.

Spray the silk orchid plant thoroughly with water. Then shake it to get the most of water off. Finally dry it in the sun for a couple of hours.

An easier solution is to use silk plant cleaner. You just spray and wait; no wiping or drying is necessary. You can find the silk plant cleaner on the Internet.

Silk orchid arrangements are great for weddings. They have a lot of advantages compared to real orchids.

Time is not an issue. You can order the silk orchid arrangements well in advance. They are ready for pre-wedding photos and wedding rehearsals.

Silk orchids are also sturdy. Cold or heat will not make them wilt. So an outdoor ceremony in the summer (or even in the winter) is not a problem.

No surprises on the weeding day

You can decide exactly the silk orchids you like. No surprises on the big day, when the pink orchids where sold out and you could only have yellow orchids instead.

When the wedding is over, you can bring a silk orchid arrangement back home for a lovely memory of the big day; a memory which will last forever.

Allergy safe

Do you have an uncle who suffers from flower allergy? Then you can avoid that his sneezing will spoil the weeding speeches by selecting silk orchid arrangements.

And often you can even buy silk orchids cheaper than the real ones. Especially if you want a special kind that only grows in Indonesia. A silk orchid arrangement is only a click away on the Internet.

Silk orchid stems are great for decorating you home. You can use just a single stem in a vase or combine several to one big silk orchid arrangement.

Color

First of all the silk orchid stem color needs to match the rest of the decor. So choose the same color as the rest; or find a silk orchid in a complementary color. But consider the color before buying.

Less is (often) more

Do not overdo. The silk orchid stems shall complement the rest decor; not take focus from it. So a single stem is often better than a lot; unless it is used in a arrangement to e.g. a weeding. Then there is normally not anything like “too much”.

The right vase

Choose the right vase for the silk orchid stem. And if you do not have one, buy one. It is a pity to buy a beautiful silk orchid stem and put it in a wrong vase.

Put tall silk orchid stems in tall vases. And remember that silk orchids are versatile, so unusually shaped vases are perfectly fine.

Buy quality silk orchid stems

And finally; buy only first class silk orchid stems. You will look at them for several years, so make sure you buy quality; even though it might cost you a little more.

You can find a lot of different silk orchid stems on the Internet.

The Cymbidium orchids are normally grown to a height of 60 cm (24 inches). Each flower has a diameter of 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches).

The range of colors includes white, green, yellow, cream, pink brown and red.

Taking care of Cymbidium orchids

Like the Phalaenopsis orchids the Cymbidium is not easy to take care of.

If you read about taking care of Cymbidium orchids, you will probably find it difficult.

Depending on the conditions watering should only be done twice a week and only in the edges. If you live in the North, they need 70 % shade, and there should not be more than 20 degrees between night and day.

So you can use a lot of time taking care of your of Cymbidium orchids; or you can chose a silk Cymbidium orchid instead.

Then the only care taking you have to do is a little dusting once in a while.

You can find a lot of different Cymbidium orchids on the Internet.

Phalaenopsis is a genus of approximately 60 species of orchids.

The Phalaenopsis orchids can grow up to a height of one meter (40 inches). The flowers are large and almost round.

The color of the flower does normally have a rose or white tint.

Taking care of Phalaenopsis orchids

It is a little easier to take care of the Phalaenopsis orchid than the Cymbidium orchid.

The best temperature is 20 to 35 °C (68 to 95 °F), but can grow in lower temperatures.

If the temperature is lower than 18 °C (64 °F) it is important not to overwater the plant. If the roots get to much water, they will rotten.

The humidity has to be 60 % to 70 % and the light has to be low (12,000 to 20,000 lux).

So if it sounds complicated, there is another option: silk Phalaenopsis orchids. They are not so sensitive to temperature, humidity and light. And no watering is necessary; just a little dusting once in a while.

You can find a lot of different Phalaenopsis orchids on the Internet.
