That shit’s easy to get unless you’re underage. Silk Road is a truly free market. That means people are buying and selling everything from weapons to meth to smack and they’re doing it fairly easily. Hackers, anarchists, and criminals have been dreaming about these days since forever. Where you can turn on your computer, browse the web anonymously, make an untraceable cash-like transaction, and have a product in your hands, regardless of what any government or authority decides. We’re at a new point in history, where complicated, highly-technical systems have become freely available and pretty easy to use. But before you can join in on the party, you gotta understand what makes all of this possible. Welcome to Tor (a network for anonymous web browsing), Bitcoin (a new cash-like digital currency with anonymous properties), and strong encryption. Tracking Us Through The System Tracing people through electronic networks has been embedded on the minds of all TV and movie viewers since at least the ‘80s: Clever criminal: “You know you’ll never find the bomb … you stupid fucking pig!” One FBI agent to another: “Keep him on the line! We’ve almost got a trace!” The criminal hangs up abruptly. FBI Agent: “Damn it! We didn’t get the trace!” Since the beginning of computer “crime,” hackers have gone through many elaborate steps to hide where they’re connecting from. This generally meant routing your connection through so many computers that it’d be very hard and time-consuming to find where you are actually coming from. Over the years, non-criminals decided they needed a way to hide their traffic from “Big Brother” type governments, even for day-to-day internet browsing. Today, there is a pre-packaged and simple way to route our internet traffic in a fairly anonymous way: the Tor Project. Tor, short for “the onion router,” is a network of volunteer-ran computer systems (nodes) that accept internet traffic and send it to other nodes. After going through a few nodes, your internet data gets spit out onto the internet, to its destination, by an exit node. In order to make sure that your internet traffic is anonymous while traveling through the Tor network, data is encrypted in layers. A good analogy, one that the Tor project uses, is an onion. Let’s say that I’m connecting to Facebook, and I don’t want Facebook to know where I’m connecting from. I’d load up Tor (you can find it at www.torproject.org) and connect to Facebook using the Tor browser. What happens under the hood is basically this: my internet traffic would be encrypted several times, in layers like an onion. Then my data would get sent into the Tor network. Each node that got my traffic would decrypt one layer, peeling off one layer of the onion, and send it to the next node. This would happen a few more times until all the layers of the onion were peeled and the original message was left. At that point an “exit” node would send it onto the regular internet to Facebook. So where do they go when the work is done? The truth is it’s a place shared with arms dealers, terrorists and drug traffickers. Welcome to the world of the “Dark Web”, a secretive fold within the internet where you can buy automatic machineguns and kilos of cocaine using a currency that no government in the land can regulate, all via an ecommerce site known as “Silk Road”. I’ve managed to access the Dark Web to see what can really be purchased on the notorious Silk Road website. Although Rupert Murdoch’s remaining newspapers have been hammering home the idea that it’s an Amazon for criminals, it’s actually more of an eBay for lunatics, gun enthusiasts, drug users, small time arms dealers and some very interesting people. Getting in is not the easiest thing to do, but you don’t need to be anywhere near as tech savvy as the papers would have you believe. At school I spent IT lessons trying not to get caught playing Gold Miner and my final project was Microsoft’s Wikipedia page copy-and-pasted onto one PowerPoint slide – I managed to access Silk Road in about 15 minutes. It’s actually more of an eBay for lunatics, gun enthusiasts, drug users, small time arms dealers and some very interesting people. Firstly you have to download a program known as Tor (The onion router), which basically opens the gateway into this untraceable internet within the internet that is the Dark Web. The Tor client allows you to stay hidden in a virtual secret hideout by relaying its traffic through network upon network of servers situated all over the world. This apparently makes it almost impossible to trace the user’s true location and identity and was created specifically for this purpose. The irony of Tor is that the US Navy actually funded the project in its infancy, and now the FBI is trying to shut it down. After finding the .onion Dark Web address for Silk Road, I typed it into the browser Tor opens once it’s been loaded and hit enter. At first you’re greeted with an almost blank webpage with a few boxes on it and a captcha. It’s quite straightforward though, I signed up as Cult Leader (as you do) and was instantly given access to Silk Road and all its illegal glory. This will hide your IP address by giving it another one so you can be anonymous when searching for or downloading anything on the net such as movies or buying drugs that may be illegal or get you into trouble with your work or even the law. Get a small USB/Flash drive to store your files on. This will ensure nothing is on your computer for people to find and get you in trouble and also prevent hackers stealing your Bitcoins. You can get one at many stores or online at Amazon. When people Google &nbsp;“Silkroad download” they are really looking for a browser called Tor. Download Tor here www.torproject.org/download/download. This is the only browser you can use to find the Silkroad anonymous marketplace. Save the file onto your USB and open/extract the files. Download a password manager program such as KeyChain or KeePass to securely keep track of your usernames, passwords and addresses as you will always want to make them different every time and completely anonymous so it can’t trace back to you. Eine Kurskorrektur war nach dem schwindelerregendem Anstieg der letzten Tage wohl bitter nötig. Aber, dass der Kurs dann so heftig nach unten rauscht… Es ging um mehr als 50% nach unten, aber man sollte dabei nicht vergessen, dass wir die jetzigen Kurse erst am Sonntag, also erst vor 4 Tagen hinter uns gelassen hatten. Wer Mut hatte, der hat heute nachgekauft und freut sich jetzt vielleicht über ein schönes Schnäppchen. Derjenige, der jedoch erst in den letzten Tagen eingestiegen ist, ärgert sich jetzt vermutlich und hat vielleicht schon wieder die Lust an den Bitcoins verloren. Es zeigt sich mal wieder: wer mit Bitcoins handelt braucht schon starke Nerven. Der alte Börsenfuchs André Kostolany hat auch für solche Situationen eine schöne Erklärung parat gehabt, als er sagte: “Wenn zu viele zittrige Hände im Markt sind, ist der Crash nicht mehr weit“. So ist es dann wohl auch heute Abend gewesen. Ich gehe davon aus, dass sich der Kurs wie schon in den letzten Wochen schnell wieder fangen und bald alte Höchststände erreichen wird. Vielleicht wird er aber auch erst mal eine kleine “Verschnaufspause” einlegen. Dem Chart würde es auf jeden Fall gut tun. Denn in den letzten Tagen hatten wir keine Kurskurve mehr, sondern eher einen senkrechten Strich nach oben. Das zieht viele Glücksritter an, die genauso schnell aus dem Markt aussteigen, wie sie eingestiegen sind. Das ist nicht gesund. Der Bitcoin braucht Investoren, die an ihn glauben und langfristig interessiert sind. Auf der anderen Seite ist das nun einmal der Markt. Angebot und Nachfrage in seiner Reinform. Und das ist auch gut so. Bitcoins gibt es nun seit mittlerweile über 4 Jahren. Den ersten Crash Mitte 2011 hat der Bitcoin bereits überlebt. Dieser war die Folge einiger ärgerlicher Hackerangriffe auf verschiedene Bitcoin-Dienstleister, die jedoch von Teilen der Medien als Angriff auf das Bitcoin-System selbst dargestellt wurden. Das führte zu großer Unsicherheit im Markt und ließ den Kurs innerhalb von ein paar Monaten von rund $32 auf fast $2 sinken. Wer zu diesem Kurs wieder in den Markt eingestiegen ist hat vermutlich immer noch ein breites Grinsen im Gesicht.&nbsp;Wie vielleicht einige wissen hat der Bitcoin-Kurs anschließend einen Boden gebildet und ist bis Ende 2012 auf rund $13 gestiegen, um dann in einem sportlichen Marsch bis auf $266 zu steigen. Viele Medien schrieben in den letzten Tagen, dass der Bitcoin-Kurs eine Blase sei, die bald platzen würde. Die gleiche Frage kann man sich aber auch bei anderen Währungen stellen wie dem Euro, dem US-Dollar oder dem Japanischen Yen, dessen Geldmenge in den nächsten Jahren verdoppelt werden soll. Die vermeintlich so sicheren Währungen werden mit immer mehr Geld aufgepumpt, so dass es aus meiner Sicht nur eine Frage der Zeit ist bis auch diese Blasen platzen werden. Im Gegensatz zu herkömmlichen Währungen hat der Bitcoin einen entscheidenden Vorteil: die Geldmenge ist von&nbsp;vornherein&nbsp;begrenzt und somit für Investoren kalkulierbar. Das kann selbst Gold nicht bieten. Denn mit einem steigenden Goldpreis geht auch IMMER eine größere Fördermenge einher. Mit anderen Worten: steigt der Goldpreis, lohnt es sich für Minengesellschaften alte Minen, die wegen zu hohen Kosten geschlossen wurden wieder zu eröffnen oder aus bestehenden Minen mit z.B. besseren Maschinen mehr Gold aus der Erde zu holen. Das alles geht beim Bitcoin nicht. Die Menge der jeden Tag neu generierten Bitcoins von derzeit 3.600 Einheiten ist fest im Bitcoin-Algorithmus programmiert und auch die maximale Anzahl von 21 Mio. Bitcoins ist fix. When Mr. Grinberg, now a lawyer in the financial institutions group of the Manhattan law firm Davis Polk &amp; Wardwell, first learned about bitcoins, they were selling for 10 cents. Now, after the latest price surge that began in January, the cost of a bitcoin on an exchange that converts them to dollars is something like $140, and the collective value of all bitcoins has passed a billion dollars. That is a lot of coin in any form, and the billion-dollar milestone has turned the once-obscure online currency into a media sensation. Had Mr. Grinberg invested just $100 back then, today his investment would be worth ... Ah, but that way madness lies. “People are buying bitcoins because the price is going up,” he said in an interview. “That is the classic indicator of a bubble.” The question of whether the increase represents real value or is simply evidence of a bubble is at the heart of the current media frenzy. Bitcoin began in January 2009, a project introduced by a programmer or group of programmers who worked under the name Satoshi Nakamoto. The project represented a breakthrough in using software code to authenticate and protect transactions without resorting to a centralized bank or government treasury. In that way, Bitcoin became a peer-to-peer system. That comes in pretty handy for people who do not want their transactions monitored. In conversations about the project with scholars who study it, the word that comes up as often as “bubble” is “genius.” For one thing, though bitcoins are software code, you can’t simply copy them like a music file. The process of creating the coins — “mining” them in the project’s allusion to something tangible like gold or silver — involves computer work that, crucially, verifies Bitcoin transactions. “It is the most successful digital currency already right now,” said Nicolas Christin, the associate director of the Information Networking Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. “Even if bitcoins become worth nothing, it has succeeded more than any academic proposals for a digital currency,” he said in an interview from Okinawa, Japan, where he was attending a conference on financial cryptography that included a number of papers on bitcoins. People buy the coins for cold hard cash on exchanges. Completing those purchases, as well as cashing out, typically involves re-entering the world of traditional financial transactions, with fees and loss of anonymity. But Bitcoin’s managers say the currency has proved so secure that despite the fact that exchanges and virtual wallets, where people keep their bitcoins, have been hacked, the coins themselves have not been forged. So why the sudden run-up in value? Some point to the recent crisis over Cypriot banks, which made a currency beyond the control of governments more tempting. And as with a run-up in anything tradable — tulip bulbs, dot-com shares — there is also the hypnotic logic that says the price went up today, so that means it will go up tomorrow. Some observers and investors also make the case that bitcoins are in fact undervalued. Their argument goes like this. The total value of the world’s economic activity is enormous. There are certain transactions that are ideal for bitcoins because the currency is relatively anonymous and does not need to be processed by a financial organization or a government. Schumer’s outrage was palpable. He commanded Attorney General Eric Holder to shut down the clandestine marketplace. But in the nearly two years that have passed, that apparently hasn’t happened. The site mysteriously disappeared for two weeks in November 2012, and its proprietor, alias Dread Pirate Roberts, went incommunicado from online forums. That led some to speculate that law enforcement had shut it down. But the opposite now appears to be true. Due to an explosion in popularity, Silk Road’s infrastructure had to be rebuilt to accommodate new customers and security, Dread Pirate Roberts said in a post following his return. And performance measures were added to better protect users. Rather than getting busted, Silk Road appears to be getting more robust. In early 2012 the site was carrying out “slightly over $1.2 million per month” in transactions, according to a study by Carnegie Mellon professor Nicholas Christin, who conducted “daily crawls of the marketplace for nearly six months in 2012.” And business was growing steadily, albeit not “exponentially, as reported in forums,” Christin reports, resulting in commissions of $92,000 a month for the site itself. That, of course, is pocket change in the world of transnational drug trafficking, where hundreds of billions of dollars change hands every year. But as Schumer’s comment reveals, Silk Road’s overt flouting of the law raises heckles. Silk Road is by no means the first online marketplace for illicit drugs. Others have included Black Market, The Armory, Reloaded and General Store. Law enforcement agencies around the world are fighting an arduous battle with these sites, albeit with some success.
