This collection is named for the Isthmus of Kra, the narrow strip of land connecting the Malay Peninsula to mainland Asia. The Andaman Sea lies to its west, and the Gulf of Thailand to the east.

Isthmus showcases the fusion of cultures in the Southeast Asian region. The embellishment of each item features floral motifs commonly found in traditional Southeast Asian woodcarving.

From as early as the 4th century BC, Hellenistic influence made its way from the Mediterranean coast along the fabled Silk Road into the Indus Valley, and from there as far as Southeast Asia. Evidence of this can be seen in the startlingly similar scrolled leaf motif that occurs in the art of classical Mediterranean, Central Asian, Indian and Southeast Asian cultures.

What is it ?

A bullock cart or ox cart is a two-wheeled vehicle pulled by oxen (draught cattle). It is a means of transportation used since ancient times in many parts of the world. They are still used today where modern vehicles are too expensive or the infrastructure does not favor them.

The kris or keris is an asymmetrical dagger indigenous to Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Brunei. It is known as kalis in the southern Philippines. The kris is famous for its distinctive wavy blade, but many have straight blades as well. Both a weapon and spiritual object, kris are often considered to have an essence or presence, with some blades possessing good luck and others possessing bad.

In 2005, UNESCO gave the title Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity to the kris of Indonesia. In return, UNESCO urged Indonesia to preserve their heritage.

Etymology

The origin of the word kris derived from the old Javanese term ngiris which means to stab, wedge or sliver. "Kris" is the more frequently-used spelling in the West, but "keris" is more popular in the dagger’s native lands, as exemplified by the late Bambang Harsrinuksmo’s popular book entitled Ensiklopedi Keris (Keris Encyclopedia). Two notable exceptions are the Philippines, where it is usually called kalis or kris, and Thailand where it is always spelled and pronounced as kris. Other spellings used by European colonists include "cryse", "crise", "criss", "kriss" and "creese".

Pure Silver with Gold Plated TEPAK SIREH ( Betel Container )

A quid of betel that is betel (sirih) leaves, betel nut (pinang) tobacco and gambir combined and folded neatly together and sometimes held in place by a clove, reflects Malay life as a whole and the value placed by the Malay community upon traditional customs (adat) and codes of behavior. To some the folded leaves symbolize unity. Further devotion to adat is symbolized by the placing together in a sirih container (tepak sirih) of the various ingredients that constitute a quid of betel, for the arrangement is not done haphazardly. There are precise sections that hold the ingredients. The offering of sirih indicates the value placed upon respect for others and upon refined behavior.

From the earliest times, the offering as well as the receiving of sirih and its ingredients has had a tremendous significance for both the giver and the receiver. Yet this is not all, for each of the elements that goes into the making of the tepak sirih has its own symbolic value. The sirih leaf due to its characteristic behavior in its natural environment, has been used as a symbol of respect for others. The lime (kapur) represents the purity of the heart in its whiteness, a whiteness that is basically noble but which when angered can turn bitter like the tang of the kapur itself. The gambir represents stoutness of heart while the betel nut, which comes from a tall and straight palm and whose flowers are produced in bunches symbolizes noble descent or heritage as well as honesty and integrity. The final element which sometimes goes into a quid of betel is tobacco. This represents for the Malay sirih chewer, a willingness to make sacrifices.

The offering of a sirih quid or the placing of the complete tepak sirih set carries a message from the giver to the receiver. While the giver presents himself humbly before the receiver, it is clear that such respect should not be interpreted as the demeaning by the giver of himself before the receiver. Other such hidden meanings have also been given to various elements in the complete tepak sirih.

The betel leaf has traditionally found a place in almost every ceremonial institution of the Malays as well as in social gatherings. It also has an important place in folk rituals. As a rule, the manner in which the leaf is offered to people of different social classes varies and there are clear cut rules for this. In the village public gathering, the leaf is offered in such a way that the leader of a prayer congregation (Tok Iman) receives it first, followed by the medicine man (Tok bomoh). Then comes the turn of the elders and after this, that of others present.

For special occasions highly ornate sirih containers made of brass and covered with tekat embroidery, are used. Within these tepak the ingredients are arranged in a precise order. These tepak, when used, must be offered in a specific manner, especially when the recipient is someone of the opposite sex. A mistake is likely to lead to misinterpretations. In traditional Malay society such misdemeanors were subject to fines. Tepak sirih continue to be used in ceremonial situations such as those marking the completion of the Holy Quran and weddings. Elaborate formations of betel leaves in trays carried on the heads of young maidens or older ladies (sirih junjung) mark ceremonial welcomes for dignitaries and perhaps one of the most important uses of sirih is in the betel leaf tree (pokok sirih) presented by the bride to her groom.

This Baba Nyonya basket, made from pure silver, is inspired by late traditions where some of these baskets are used during the proposal of marriage whereby it is taken by the middle person of the suitor to the intended bride’s parent as a gift. A small gong, the Caklempong ( pronounced CHARK - LAME - PONG )is an instrument which is part of the Nobat. The Nobat or Royal Musical Ensemble is a form of traditional Malay music. It is considered as part of the royal regalia. The Nobat only plays on special occasions like the installation of the Sultan or King and his birthday.

The word nobat originates from the Persian word "naubat" which means nine types of instruments. Currently, only Terengganu, Kedah, Perak and Selangor have a nobat ensemble each, with different instrumentation by state.

There will be six musical instruments used – the gendang negara or large drum, gendang ibu, gendang anak, serunai (flute/clarinet), nafiri or trumpet and caklempong (small gong).

A gong is an East and South East Asian musical instrument that takes the form of a flat metal disc which is hit with a mallet.

Gongs are broadly of three types. Suspended gongs are more or less flat, circular discs of metal suspended vertically by means of a cord passed through holes near to the top rim. Bossed or nipple gongs have a raised center boss and are often suspended and played horizontally. Bowl gongs are bowl-shaped, and rest on cushions and belong more to bells than gongs. Gongs are made mainly from bronze or brass but there are many other alloys in use.

Gongs produce two distinct types of sound. A gong with a substantially flat surface vibrates in multiple modes, giving a "crash" rather than a tuned note. This category of gong is sometimes called a tam-tam to distinguish it from the bossed gongs that give a tuned note. In Indonesian gamelan ensembles, some bossed gongs are deliberately made to generate in addition a beat note in the range from about 1 to 5 Hz. The use of the term "gong" for both these types of instrument is common.
