Josh Ritter’s “Love Is Making Its Way Back Home”

The first time I saw Josh Ritter perform was in a small venue in Arlington, VA. I was there because of a handwritten postcard I’d received days earlier, suggesting I come to the show. That night, in a small venue that doubled as a restaurant, he shared his music over clanking silverware and hushed conversations. I was transfixed. In the years since, Ritter has released three critically-acclaimed albums and has been described as one of the greatest living songwriters. Last year, he took his words to paper and released his first novel, Bright’s Passage.

Knowing Etsy’s commitment to both storytelling and craft, I was thrilled when his manager reached out to me about the video for a single from Ritter’s new EP, Bringing in the Darlings (out today on iTunes and in indie record stores near you). I am so excited to announce the world premiere of this beautiful, handcrafted piece of art, right here on Etsy.

The stop-motion animation for “Love Is Making Its Way Back Home” uses photographs culled from over 12,000 pieces of construction paper to animate a nighttime drive. A team of nearly twenty artists, editors, directors and product assistants ushered the video into being. The group started with storyboarding and computer animation before converting the digital graphics to paper cutouts (frame by frame), photographing those 12,000 cutouts and then stitching them together into four minutes of paper animation. As production designer Sam Cohen said, “We had to determine ahead of time which images to cut as positives or negatives, how to anchor the cutouts to the paper frame that surrounds it so the pieces wouldn’t fall out, as well as a host of other problems. It was definitely the most labor intensive video we’ve been a part of.”

In addition to the video premiere of “Love Is Making Its Way Back Home,” Ritter has teamed up with Etsy to open a shop. The artists behind the video have created a limited run of screenprinted posters based on a selection of frames. Each poster will include one of the die-cut construction paper cut-outs, as well as an mp3 of “Love Is Making Its Way Back Home.”

En Europa aun habrá que esperar un poco más. Ya se han iniciado las primeras pruebas dando resultados muy satisfactorios, con lo que es posible que de cara al 2011 pueda estar en Europa.

Terry Pratchett's Mort to become a Disney animation?

Bleeding Cool have recieved a tip-off that Rom Clements and John Musker, directors of "The princess and the Frog", "Aladdin" and other Disney animated features, are working on an adaptation of Terry Pratchett's Mort.

For Mort however, it is about to become one of the tools of his trade. From henceforth, Death is no longer going to be the end, merely the means to an end. He has received an offer he can't refuse. As Death's apprentice he'll have free board, use of the company horse and being dead isn't compulsory. It's the dream job until he discovers that it can be a killer on his love life...

Mort was the fourth of the Discworld novels and remains my favourite of Pratchett's works.

Incidentally, the books seems well suited for musical treatment having already become a song-n-dance show twice over, in one productions from Germany and a different one in the UK.

Walking Dead to become a novel

Deadline recently reported that Thomas Dunne books, an imprint of St. Martin's Press, will release a trilogy of novels penned by horror novelist Jay Bonansinga, author of Pefect Victim, which will hit your local book store, and most likely comic book store as well, in 2011. The series will just be a trilogy for now though, but the plots will take place the Walking Dead universe. Robert Kirkman will be conceptualizing and outlining the stories, before handing if off to Bonansinga to write.

This could be a really cool idea, especially if you love the Walking Dead comic and Max Brook's World War Z. There's a lot of great characters in this universe that could be expanded on in the novel, but the question keeps popping up, "Will comic bookreaders and fans of the series really pick up this novel?

Walking Dead, based on Robert Kirkman's book of the same name, will appear on AMC on Halloween night.

Sintel, the Durian Open Movie Project

This fifteen minute film was created to "improve and validate" Blender, an open source 3D animation suite. Initial funding was provided by internet donations, artists and other staff were found through an international search, culminating in a group of fourteen people who brought a fifteen minute computer rendered film from pre-production to finish in a year.

Not only was Sintel created on open source software, it is also completely open it self:

All of the work of the Durian team in the past 18 months will be released under the Creative Commons Attribution license, free for everyone yo distribute, learn from or re-use. The 4-disc DVD set will provide all data to be able to recreate and rerender the film in its entirety.

Black-and-White, Time-Lapsed HDR Video

Photographer Andrew Rees shot this remarkable HDR [high dynamic range] video in cardiff, wales with a sony A700. If you're photographically inclined, he's shared the details of his method with Photography Bay:

I aim to keep the exposure at around 1.5-3 seconds, this allows me to capture movement of people but not the detail. I do this using a Hahnel Giga T pro wireless remote. With this remote I can set exposures, delays and intervals. Once I have the shot set up and balanced the exposure, I set the camera in Jpeg so I can store thousands of shots instead of hundreds then set my remote firing and wait... and wait.... Typically I am to get at least 700 shots, this will allow me to create a 70 second video if I use 10 frames per second in quicktime. Some of my longer videos have over 3-4 thousand shots which resulted in massive files sizes and huge processing times.

Beautiful work; as Giz observes, it has an artist's sketchpad qualitu to it.

CCPGames, the makers of Eve Online, have announced their next MMO project, and it's one that's going to make a lot of my college buddies simultaneously very happy and very worried about their future productivity. That's because their next project, World of Darkness, is going to be set in the universe of white wolf's table-top and live action role playing sensation Vampire:

The Mascarade, and it's going to "focus on player politics and social interaction." The teaser trailer (below) gives us no hints yet on whether the game will involve rock-paper-scissors.

Bioshock Infinite 10 minute gameplay trailer in HD

2K Games has officially released the first gameplay footage of Bioshock Infinite and this is not your average short gameplay clip, instead it is a full 10 minute gameplay trailer released on Xbox Live, earlier today.

The primary setting of Bioshock Infinite is a city suspended in the air by giant blimps and balloons, called "Columbia", named in homage of the "female personification" of the United States. Unlike the secret development of the underwater city of Rapture, Columbia was built and launched in 1900 by the American government to much fanfare and publicity. The city was meant to symbolize the ideas of exceptionalism the reveal trailer for the game alludes to the 1893 worlds Fair which is historically considered to be the emergence of American exceptionalism. On the surface, Columbia appeared to be designed as a floating "World Fair" that could travel across the globe; however, some time after its launch but before the game's events, the city was revealed to be a well-armed "international incident". The city was disavowed by the United States government, and the location of the city was soon lost to everyone else.
