The Silver
Maple Leaf

The silver maple leaf is the Canadian Mints most popular silver bullion
product to date; minted annually since 1988 these coins are highly collectable.
Its appearance was
brought about through the popularity of the gold maple leaf coins which
appeared several years earlier and proved to be a favorite among collectors and
investors. Each silver
bullion coin is 1 troy oz or 31.1 grams in weight, the coins silver purity is
99.99% which is the highest of any silver bullion coin on the market today. The $5 face value is the largest face
value shown on any comparable silver bullion coin in the world. There have been several notable issues released over the life of this
bullion coin series; in 1998 a 10oz version of the silver maple leaf was
released to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the minting of the
first bullion coin. There have been many annual variations of the maple leaf,
these have included a silver proof releases in 1989 only, there have also been
many variations of privy marked bullion coins released to many to mention here.
Coloured maples with maple design different from the regular silver maple leaf
coins, there have been holographic coins and several differing designs, such as
a 2009 issued coins commemorating the 2010 Winter Olympics (3 different coins
in total).

A problem that
many Canadian silver maple Leaf coins have is problem called milk spot, this
happens when a cleaning detergent is still left on the coin when the coin goes
into the annealing furnace to be baked. When this happens the detergent gets
baked into the coin itself and leaves a spot that cannot be easily removed. The
marks left have a milky white appearance giving the name milk spot. This
problem has become a pain for a lot of collectors, it can be a very hit or miss
problem as this does not affect all maple leaf coins.

silver maple leaf features the profile of Queen Elizabeth II, there have been a
total of three differing profiles of Queen Elizabeth to date, a young head
version, an old head version, and an older head version. Each maple coin is struck with a
face value of $5 and also shows the inscriptions of ELIZABETH II, 5 DOLLARS and
the year of minting on the obverse.

This is the first release in a new series of silver proof bullion coins, Dragons Of Legend, this first coin features the Red Welsh Dragon. The red dragon emblem was most likely introduced into Britain by the Romans, accounts suggest that when the legions departed, Welsh Britons under the red dragon fought the Saxon invaders. History tells us that Welsh born future king Henry VII flew a red dragon standard during the Wars of the Roses, and that it subsequently appeared in the Tudor Royal Arms. After centuries of powerful association the red dragon or Y Ddraig Goch became the official symbol of Wales in 1901 and since 1959 it has adorned the nations national flag. No more than 5,000 of these silver bullion coins will be minted by the Australian Perth Mint, each silver coin will be struck from .999 fine silver in proof quality. The coins reverse portrays a red coloured dragon amid dramatic mountain scenery, included on the reverse of the coin are the words RED WELSH DRAGON.These coins are housed in a black presentation case and illustrated shipper, each released coin will be accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
The Santa Maria ( Santa Maria de La Immaculada Concepcion) was the largest of three ships used by Columbus on his first voyage 1492-1493. Columbus was searching for a quicker trade route to the East Indies and instead he discovered the islands just off the coast of America now known as the Bahamas. This silver bullion coin is struck by the Perth Mint from 1oz of .999 silver in proof quality, The coin depicts a representation of the Santa Maria in full sail set against a coloured globe map and the inscription SANTA MARIA, and on the reverse incorporates the P mintmark of the Australian Perth Mint. other forthcoming Releases will be the Golden Hind, Mayflower, USS Constitution and the Cutty Sark.

Weight..............31.135 grams
Diameter...........40.6 mm
Purity................999 silver
Year..................2011
Mintage.............5,000
Face Value..........$1

More On The Ships That Changed The World Series

Canadian Grizzly Bear-Wildlife Series Maple Leaf

This Silver Maple Leaf has an extremely low mintage, highlighted in pure gold and marks the 20th anniversary of the Silver Maple Leaf series of bullion coins. The coin features the Canadian specimen finish, which is a three fold combination of different finishes, the design raised area or relief includes both brilliant and mirrored surfaces, while the fields are subtly striated resulting in a contrasting matte appearance of the coin, no other mint in the world employs the specimen finish.

The coin features a brand new naturalistic single maple leaf design and the dual dates of 1988-2008 commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Silver Maple Leaf, the reverse portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is exactly the same one as on the very first Silver Maple Leaf issued in 1988. And a maple leaf that is selectively plated in pure 24 karat gold and the RCM specimen finish, this coin comes in its own clam case and with individually numbered certificate. This is the first coin in the Extinct & Endangered Series and could be as popular as the Deadly & Dangerous series of coins. The coins reverse depicts the Tasmanian tiger and cub set against its natural habitat, the tiger and cub are featured in stunning colour and are authentic depictions of this noble beast. With a large wolf like head and tiger like striped coat and wombat like backwards facing pouch, the Thylacinus cynocephalus (Tasmanian Tiger) is among the most intriguing of Australias animals. Rivalling in reputation such wonders of nature as the platypus, kangaroo and koala, this unusual creature virtually disappeared from the Australian mainland around 2,000 to 3,000 years ago. At the time of European Settlement, it was found in significant numbers only in Tasmania. Hunting, disease and habitat destruction all had a major impact on the Tassie Tiger population, and the last known thylacine died in the Hobart Zoo in 1936.

Set within a stunning maple inset lacquered case within a colourful outer box shipper and accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

http://www.silvercoinnews.com/tasmaniantiger.html

Worlds Largest Gold Maple Bought

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 197px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_qzMFvj3Z-sE/TFFyS1iAS4I/AAAAAAAAACo/s0v8sEQ5pA4/s200/100kggoldcoin.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5499302287929002882" />

100 Kg Maple Leaf Gold Coin

A Spanish precious metals trading company ORO direct, bought the worlds largest gold coin for €3.27 million euros or £2.6 million pounds, its exact material worth, from the estate of an insolvent investment firm at a rare auction in Vienna on June 25. The 100 kg 220 lb gold coin, one of only five Canadian $1,000,000 Maple Leaf coins that the Royal Canadian Mint has ever produced was bought immediately in a written bid from ORO direct, a gold trading company based in Madrid. The coin made of pure .9999 refined gold went under the hammer at the Dorotheum auction house in Vienna on June 25. The worlds largest gold coin weighs 100 kg 220 lb, measures 50 cm in diameter, 3 cm in thickness and is made from bullion with a purity of .9999. The legal tender coin was introduced on 3 May 2007 by the Royal Canadian Mint with a face value of $1,000,000 CAN.
http://www.silvercoinnews.com/largestgoldcoin.html
